Title: POLO, BADMINTON AND CROQUET, OH MY
Post by: bk on May 20, 2013, 11:55:33 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of civilized games that have been replaced by things like World of Warcraft and The Sims, and now it is time for you to post until the civilized game-playing cows come home - they're currently playing badMOOnton but have lost their shuttlecock.

Good morning, all.

Up a wee bit too early this morning.  But a free day again in which to relax and putter about the house, so no harm done.

Definition of "puttering about the house":   I need to make major inroads in the sorting and putting away some stuff, and the getting rid of other stuff.  Too many "temporary" stacks, piles, clutter.  And it's time to move forward on some projects in the basement and garage.

Okay, now I'm tired thinking about all of that.

I also enjoy the score of HALF A SIXPENCE.  The movie is okay; nothing great.

On the other hand, I don't care much for Tommy Steele.  Didn't anybody ever tell him that, in movies, you don't have to play to the upper balcony?

He was atrocious in FINIAN'S RAINBOW, and from what I've read, he's extremely "difficult" to deal with.

No candy in boxes.  However, for Halloween, I always have my wife get the little Hershey miniatures, then I hope that we don't get many trick-or treaters, so that I can enjoy the leftovers.

I have to say that I agree with DR DRUXY RE: Mr Tommy Steele.

They were the class act of the evening.  I even thought they were the best in the cha-cha relay, but the disadvantage of going first seems to have played against them.

I think Zendaya has lost her edge.  Kellie continues to impress.

The other freestyles suffered from"clutter"...too much going on, too many people on stage.  I know it's hard to downgrade something that is perfectly presented, but Val and Zendaya's freestyle was nowhere NEAR the quality of Derek and Kelli's....yet, they got the same score (even if Len did say he wished he could give them an 11).

Urgent Communique from the year 2113:

The National Congress of University-level Departments of Entymology has declared that another insect species has become extinct.  Coleoptera, more commonly referred to as the May beetle or June bug, has been on the endangered list the past 70 years.

"The demise of this species", according to Dr. Ludovico Taylor of the University of Texas, "is primarily due to two factors:  First, there is the irrefutable impact of the change in the weather patterns that have afflicted many plants, insects and animals throughout the world.

"Second, there is the matter of human termination of the lifespan of these insects.  June bugs, or May beetles, were always inclined toward omnisocial behavior.  In other words, they did not avoid other life forms, probably because they had no natural predators to speak of except for man."

"Many children, throughout history, have thrilled to tying string or pieces of thread to the legs of June bugs.  The bugs would fly around and around.  Inevitably, they would escape by exerting enough resistance to tearing off the leg to which the string was attached.  This was never a detriment to their reproductive abilities.  However, as society became more insular, with controlled living environment constantly shutting out nature, any June bugs entering homes were more than likely destroyed.

"Since the advent of time travel, entymologists have been studying the declining populations of coleoptera to determine if there was a major event in which the decline began its downward spiral.

"One such event occured during the morning hours of May 20, 2013, in Studio City, California.  A particularly vibrant mating pair had entered a home through a vent from outside the home.  During that night, one of the pair was killed by an irritated occupant of the home who, apparently, was unable to sleep.

"While it has not been established whether altering events in the past should be permitted, the National Congress is considering assembling a team to revisit May 20, 2013, in Studio City to prevent the June bugs (aka "May beetles") from entering the home.  If they fail, there may be a failsafe initiated to avoid the killing of one of the mating pair."

I dread June because I get invaded by large bright green mosquitoes. They buzz about keeping me awake and are devilshly difficult to swat. After June they disappear until October when they invade again. My relatives refuse to visit me during those two months! I think it's something to do with the fact that where I live used to be swamp land.

I refused to even consider a stainless steel sink when I redid my counters.

When I finally get new appliances, I expect I will go with the stainless finish, since I have a small kitchen and black would make it too dark. I want to get a fridge and dishwasher at the same time by the same manufacturer so the finishes will match, since they are side-by-side.

But by then, something else will be in style. Or actually, something else will be in style two months after I buy the stainless.

I have to imagine that Derek is more popular than Val. And I have to imagine that Kellie is more popular than Zendaya. Add to that the fact that Kellie's freestyle was so amazingly good and I have a good feeling about her winning.

I have to believe there is a chance that Derek and Kellie will win.  However, we probably won't know until the scores are known from last night's voting.  The judges do have the final say, but let's suppose that Zendaya has a voting bloc that votes like fans do for American Idol contestants.  Some performers have fans who vote hundreds of times in the couple of hours available to them.  This could work for Zendaya and it could work for Jacoby.

I wonder if we'll know the standings before tonight's competition begins.  The fan votes are supposedly 50% of the score, so tonight's judging will be crucial.  If the judges had to vote last night, I think there's no doubt Derek and Kellie would have landed on top.

Val is a very talented dancer and his choreography has been pretty amazing, especially since it allows Zendaya to use her natural talents.   BUT...Derek is the best dancer/choreographer on that show...and his brilliance has been on display the past two weeks.  Nothing has topped last night's freestyle...just amazing.  His vision, plus his ability to teach Kellie, is second to none.

But by then, something else will be in style. Or actually, something else will be in style two months after I buy the stainless.

Think either Harvest Yellow or Avocado Green.  Avoid them and you should be all right.

I am looking at Satina which is a stainless look finish - that is a lot like our appliances now, only  sort aluminum looking.  It is supposed to minimize fingerprints and stains....  We have a stainless steel sink which we have had for many years....

Back from grocery shopping for our household.  Much less strenuous than yesterday's trip with my Mom.  There's a 7.5 pound chicken roasting in the oven.  We'll have some for dinner tonight and then I'll make chicken salad for the luncheon we're having here on Thursday.  My cousin Perry and his girlfriend will be here from Georgia and Mom will join us.

BK, about the avatars...right now, any new avatars added are the small ones (65 by 65 pixels).  Will it be possible to add larger new avatars?  The larger ones from before are 110 by 150 pixels.

I haven't watched any of the trial.

I don't think they are  incompetent...the bar is pretty low for competence...you can be asleep and still be competent, but I disagree with a lot of what I'm hearing.  I didn't watch yesterday and haven't heard the grounds for all their motions to withdraw.   I thought Jodi actually did a pretty good job today.  Better than her lawyers have done for her in this phase.

I think that they should have been prepared for the cross examination of the experts.  I think the judge let Juan go way over the line on his demeanor and they did object and objet about that.  They had no choice.  I never would have spent days and days on the sexual details, that was uncalled for and didn't do any good. They left Jodi on the stand way too long, etc.  The idea is to put into evidence what you need and not a whole lot more, then tie it all up in the end.  They didn't do that at all.

I think Jodi should do life without parole and what she did was terrible.  That being said, I can't imagine what it must feel like to have your attorneys file motion after motion to get off of your case.  They are supposed to be your champions and they don't even want to be there.  Unless there is some terrible ethical conflict, I think it's outrageous

We just have a few hours to wait - then we will know.  Her attorneys advised her on several matters and she ignored their advice - I don't think they have much reputation left....this would be their second co-client on Death Row....but they are doing what they can to distance themselves from her, I think.

I'm sure they are also wondering how she'll pay them. Now that she's guilty, if I'm right, she cannot be paid for her story, and their bill for defending her must be enormous.

I am laid up. Yesterday, I was arising from a little nap on the sofa when my left leg wouldn't hold my weight and I took a tumble. I tried to catch myself, which of course meant that I now have a sprained wrist in addition to a sprained ankle. I'm confident that nothing is broken, but my ankle sure is swollen. I thought about going to an urgent care center, but aside from an X-ray there is little they can do and I don't want to have to hobble a long way or sit around, waiting, for an hour or more. So I am iced and bandaged, taking aspirin and MSM (a natural anti-inflammatory) and Arnica. I don't feel like moving from this sofa, which of course is how this happened in the first place.

My neighbor downstairs brought me ice yesterday, as I had none on hand, and the gardner came upstairs to pick up my garbage so I wouldn't have to navigate the stairs.

All is improving, and I can now even type a bit using my left hand.

Unlike American Idol you are only allowed a small amount of votes. 5 on facebook and 5 per telephone line. We are actually allowed to vote from Canada (even the 1800 # works).

I can't imagine that kids watch DWTS. Or that Zendaya's show is so popular that kids would follow her to DWTS. But regardless they can't mass vote.

Also last time I checked the fans votes were 50% but not in the way you'd think. I am not 100% but this is how it was a couple of years ago (and I don't think they changed formats). But you get a certain percentage of the judges vote.

So with 4 contestants they would each get almost 25% of the judges vote out of 100%. So really the fact that Zendaya got 65/65 and Kellie got 64/65 makes almost no difference. It's basically the same score. Even Jacoby's score of 56/65 gives him like 21.5% of the judges vote. So really it's not that different than what Zendaya and Kellie got.

It will basically come down to the fan vote.   If Jacoby was hugely popular then he could win. But I think his dances last night will not encourage people to vote for him.  That is why more popular celebs can stay when the judges votes are poor.

Since the judges were overscoring last night their votes mean almost nothing.  IT's who is the fan favorite between Kellie and Zendaya. I really believe that Kellie is going to win. That freestyle did it IMO.

Think either Harvest Yellow or Avocado Green.  Avoid them and you should be all right.

;D

I think Harvet Yellow is making a come-back.

I must tell this little story. Many years ago when I had cats one of them had come down with feline leukemia. There was no vaccine then and no treatment. A friend worked for a vet and suggested I bring the cat in. I did so. The vet told me there was nothing he could do and wanted to put her to sleep. I refused. After some argument he agreed to let her stay overnight. The next day I returned to find that she was no better. We again argued. "She's MY cat!" I insisted, and took her home. I knew a woman who had nursed a dog through distemper, so I spent several days giving her water and baby vitamins with an eye dropper and just holding her. After three days she was running around again and soon made a full recovery. About a month or so later, my friend who worked for the vet came by. She saw the cats running around and said, "BTW, whatever happened to your cat?" "That's her," I said, as I pointed her out.

Yes, on the test board, George.  I've sent your info along - try re-logging in, but interestingly you are showing as logged in at the bottom of the home page - check your user preferences - since you're even able to get into those you should be seeing the reply functions on the board - you may have to set or recheck some preferences.

I'll look around again...and I just sent you a test PM on the new board.

I got the test PM so you're definitely logged in, which means something has changed in your settings.  Our tech has been getting a running series of e-mails about all this - that's why we do all this testing before ever going anywhere near going live.  BTW, when we do go live, the board will take 24 hours (maybe less) to propagate to the new server - during that time, no one will be able to post - oh, you'll be able to, but once the new board is live those old posts won't be there.  The BK's Notes, however, will be immediate and never be down.

Today they would know better, at least I hope so.

Think either Harvest Yellow or Avocado Green.  Avoid them and you should be all right.

;D

I think Harvet Yellow is making a come-back.

You mean my ugly countertops will be in style again?  Just as I'm seriously considering replacing them...

I almost had a fall last night.  I woke up with sharp shooting pains in my left ankle.  It was strange, except for the shooting pains it didn't hurt.  I could easily turn or stretch my ankle and walking on it made it feel better.  Walking is how I almost went down.  Once I walked and it stopped hurting I just about fell asleep standing up and am sure that would have dropped me down to the floor ;D

Healing vibes to Jeanne

We just have a few hours to wait - then we will know.  Her attorneys advised her on several matters and she ignored their advice - I don't think they have much reputation left....this would be their second co-client on Death Row....but they are doing what they can to distance themselves from her, I think.

Maybe they should release her from jail with the stipulation that she must marry O. J. Simpson.  It would save the state a lot of money.

Thank you all for the vibes, the hugs, and the good wishes.  My therapist has said for many months that she didn't see the progress needed for me to walk again without a walker.  The U of W doctor agreed with her.  He said that if I was going to be able to walk with a cane or without a cane, I would have showed signs of it by now.  In other words, there will be no day in September that I will wake up and suddenly be able to walk.

I only have ten visits with a therapist left in 2013 through my insurance policy.  For now, I will hold on to them.  If the therapist hadn't suggested we end the sessions, I would have suggested it myself.  I just can't afford to keeping paying for sessions when I can do the same thing for myself at home.  I will keep doing my exercises at home and we will see what we shall see.

And I will never walk alone as long as I have all of you.

Oh, go ahead and give us all your password.  We are all friends here.  I am sure the 5th Dimension lady would ever misuse that information.

Healing vibes to you, Jeanne.  I will say a special prayer for rapid healing.  I had no idea that Monosodium glutamate was helpful for healing.

Cilla, if you ever hear a knock at the door, and when you look thru the peephole and see a little triangle waving in the breeze; be very careful about opening the door!

AND the WalMart in Greencastle had my red microwave....so the kitchen is getting there....  Still trying to decide between stainless steel and black appliances...

Very nice, DR JRand!  As for the black or stainless steel appliances - either one will show EVERY spot...

DR GINNY you are assuming I have spots in my kitchen.

Doesn't everyone?  We had a stainless steel sink in our previous house and the water spots drove me crazy!

I had that problem too until I figured out you could  cover them up with a thin layer of dirty dishes   ;D

...........And dust!

They are court appointed.  The state is paying them $225 per hour

Not like I should be.  AACB is done until September.  I do need to practice for Ice Cream Days.  I'm still interested, just pretty caught up in transitioning my practice into just immigration.

Now I'm only interested in going to sleep.   Tomorrow I'm going to the eye doctor and will pick out some new glasses.  I have lots of time when I don't see so well out of these.  Don't know if my eyes are getting worse or if it's just the glasses.   I'll find out tomorrow.  I like to get new frames every two-three years and it's time

TCB that is absolutely correct.  You will never walk alone with your friends here at haineshisway.com.  Which is why, as frustrated as I get sometimes with this here site and board, I will never shut it down.

But you can see the calendar.  I haven't figured out the permissions for the calendar but we'll probably spend time tomorrow going over all that stuff - so, post in that thread everything that you can't do that you can do on this board.

No NOT Harvest Gold or Avocado please.......we have had those......and shag carpeting in the living room, too......it is a fate not to be desired.

Oh, all right.  But you're just going to HAVE to go with textured (i.e., popcorn) ceilings!
