Well, you've read the notes, the notes were home sweet home, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home sweet home.
-
And the word of the day is: PECCANT!
-
First post! :D
-
Welcome back, BK!
-
Last night, I saw a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/season/2013/jesus-christ-superstar.php). It was the final dress/preview/volunteer appreciation performance. We got to see the show for free (and sit in the regular seat...and NOT usher!) and we were fed. It was a very nice spread. :D TCB, Christian Doyle is playing Judas. The production is based on the 2012 UK "Live Arena Tour (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009DHOZ5M/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1)...Christian even has a wig of dreadlocks. They have modern protesters and also use projections, although they're their own video creations.
-
Their biggest change from the "traditional" interpretation is that Herod is played by a woman (a real woman, not a man in drag) as Oprah Winfrey! She was good, but I don't know if it really worked. Otherwise, the production and the performers were very good. And I didn't know this, but a friend of mine that I hadn't seen in about 10 years is in the show! We chatted after and will catch up the next time I see the show...I certainly plan to see it again.
-
And now, to bed!

How nice to see DR ryacko joining us in the living room last night! Welcome, sir.
Perhaps you can serenade us all with a ditty every now and then! :)
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning, all! Something good has to happen soon because the stress is giving me truly weird dreams: the first one was about my cousins forcing their Bible-thumping mother, my Aunt Lois, who died around 1976, to watch the video of The Brain From Planet X because they wanted their high school to do a production. This all took place in the house where I lived in 1979 in Middletown, OH. The second dream was about the wedding of Ron Raines around 1986 or so, and it had something to do with a ribbon for the bride's bouquet. It was a good morning to hear the alarm,
So, I'm happy you are home in one piece, BK!
Welcome to our new DR ryacko!
Around 9, I will head down to Kinko's at 24th and Seventh to pick up those new vocl scores, take them to Toyland and bind them. Then, I will tape orchestra parts while I wait fora delivery of copy paper. Once that arrives, I'll head home. My adopted son Joshie will show up around 10 to borrow a vocal score and it will be nice to visit with hm for a bit.
More coffee! I wish I something strong to pour into it.
-
good morning to all

cast album of Cabaret and then the movie and couldn't understand why so many songs were cut and why there were characters in the movie that were not on the cast recording. At the time the movie was rated 14 years or older and I liked older than I did at the time so I was able to see the film.
The next show that I saw was the original production of Chicago.
-
I've seen other kander and ebb shows over the years and have their recordings but they've never really been a favorite of mine.

:)

Good morning.
Happy and healthy Thursday vibes.

TOD:
CABARET. Bought the cast album when new and played it to death. Bought the vocal score and played that to death. Sadly, I never got to NYC or anywhere else to see anything close to the original production. Jumping ahead a few years, I, too, was disappointed in the film because it was such a departure from the stage musical. I appreciate it now, especially in its beautiful new incarnation on Blu-ray, but back then it just flew right over my head. CABARET came along in exactly the year I was taught how to properly handle and care for LPs -- in fact, it was the first cast album to have been so treated by me -- and that very piece o' vinyl is still on my shelf and still plays beautifully today.
CHICAGO. Saw the touring production, cold (I hadn't listened to it at all) at the Dorothy Chandler in L.A., but the silliest thing marred my appreciation of it that evening. I'd recently gotten my first contact lenses -- I think just a few weeks prior -- and was so excited to be wearing them and enjoying that beautiful new clear full-range vision at the show...but they were just "off" that night, irritating me in some way, and I let myself be continually distracted by it. Incredibly, that made CHICAGO irritate me, and when I got the album somewhat later and started really appreciating it, I regretted the error of my ways. I love the show now, regardless of the eyewear I happen to be sporting.
KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. Fell instantly in love with the CD. When I learned that Chita Rivera was to be leaving the show, I hustled and got a ticket for her closing night, and that is without question one of those nights in the theater I will never forget. The impact of score (which I was totally crazy about, but had only heard out of context) and what I was seeing blew me away, and I wonder to this day why I didn't have Ms. Rivera sign my program as she chatted leisurely and appreciatively with the relatively small assembly of admirers afterward. Several years later I jumped at the chance to piano/conduct a small production that in general wasn't all that bad, but did suffer at the hands of a lead gal who didn't really "get" it.
-
TOD:
I'm not sure if my first Kander and Ebb show was CABARET or THE HAPPY TIME. Both played at the Music Center in Los Angeles, but I don't recall which one I saw first.
Perhaps BK will know.
The production of CABARET I saw had Signe Hasso in it.
THE HAPPY TIME with Robert Goulet and David Wayne was a pre-Broadway tryout. In fact, one number, featuring birthday cakes, did not make it to NY.
-
In THE HAPPY TIME, one of my future publicity clients (Julie Gregg) replaced the leading actress who did the Los Angeles production when the show went to Broadway.
Does anybody know what Julie Gregg is doing these days?
She was a nice lady, but she seems to have disappeared from the scene.
-
Good morning, all.
Welcome home, BK.
Vibes for each and every one.
-
Greetings from Toyland!
I am waiting for Joshie to show up and having some breakfast.
-
TOD:
I think my first visual encounter with Kander and Ebb was "Funny Lady," and I fell for the song, "How Lucky Can You Get." The local radio station that Mom listened to played that song every afternoon at the same time, so, even those I didn't like the rest of the music that they played, I always made sure I was in the kitchen to hear that.
A couple of years later, I flipped over the soundtrack for "New York, New York," and played that double disc set to death. In fact, I played it so often that one of my sisters broke one of the albums she had grown to hate it so much. Needless to say, we didn't speak for awhile after that. And she never replaced the album.
Then the rest of Kander and Ebb began to fall into place quickly: Caberet, Zorba, Chicago, Flora. It took a little while to find The Happy Time, which was out of print by then.
I haven't seen many of their shows on stage, but of the few I have, I think Kiss of the Spiderwoman with Chita is one of my favorite theatrical experiences. Though I knew the score by that time, I wasn't familiar with how the story played out and how it differed (for the better, in my opinion) from the movie.

Did I thank you for your email, TCB if not, thanks (If so, thanks again. )

george - Is there a point to Oprah as Herod? Is it just for injecting a little humor? (They're not saying she's like Herod, are they?)
-
Page Two!
-
I don't know the answer to FJL's question, but is Herod commonly played as a "novelty" or "stunt casting" part these days?
-
TOD:
I also saw CHICAGO at the Los Angeles Music Center, and I was lucky enough to see it with Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera and Jerry Orbach.

And I do not. We'll have to chalk this up to a botched moment in the history of musical theater.
-
Thursday morning greetings! My sister is on her way home to Michigan and Mom is probably still putting groceries away. I'm glad to be home for a puttering day - lots of paperwork and computer work to do...
-
TOD:
I heart Kander & Ebb. Absolutely loved Cabaret on Broadway (revival). Saw Chicago on Broadway a few times and enjoyed it a lot.
But my first experience seeing one of their shows live was the touring company of Kiss of the Spiderwoman with Chita Rivera. I actually think that seeing this show was what made me fall in love with musical theatre. I had been to a few tours as a child (Phantom, Les Mis, Cats). But seeing Kiss of the Spiderwoman was completely mesmerizing to me. I was in love.
-
TOD - I've only seen 4 Kander and Ebb shows on stage, but the first one was a life-altering experience. In 1967, Mom took me on my first (and her last) trip to New York City and we saw the original cast of CABARET (my first Broadway show). On that same trip we toured then-new Lincoln Center, including the performing arts division of New York Public Library. That's where I decided to pursue a career as a librarian.
Other K & E shows: ZORBA tour either in Detroit or Ann Arbor, CHICAGO (revival) tour in Dayton, and CURTAINS in New York with DR Elmore and others from HHW.
-
I truly envy those who saw the original production of CABARET.
-
TOD, continued - Liza Minnelli's recordings and TV specials also introduced me to a lot of Kander and Ebb songs. It was from her that I first heard the lyrics to "A Quiet Thing," which has become one of my personal anthems.
And I first heard the original CHICAGO in about 1975 or '76 when DR Elmore invited me to his home here in Middletown to listen to the LP.
Like DR John G, we had a radio station in Detroit that played songs from musicals, probably when the shows were playing in Detroit. I remember hearing "The Happy Time" every morning for a while during my senior year in high school.
-
Like others here, "Cabaret" was my introduction to Kander & Ebb. It was the Original Broadway Cast album, plus seeing numbers from it on the Tony show (or was it Ed Sullivan) (or was it both)?
My only Kander & Ebb experiences have been through cast albums and the movie versions of "Cabaret" and "Chicago". And then there are the Liza songs in "New York, New York" and on her albums and on "Liza With A Z".
-
Nice Nicky Photo yesterday DR TCB!!

Warm greetings to new DR Robert Yacko! Looking forward to getting to know you via your postings here.

Ok, I did see CHICAGO....the movie and the stage version.
It would seem that I have very little experience with musicals of the 60s forward.

DC (Dear Cat) Freddy has been trying out some new foods and now I think his tummy isn't feeling good this morning. At least he acted like he wasn't feeling well.
Lately he has had little interest in eating his cat food, the same cat food I have fed him for the last 10 years, and as a result he has lost a lot of weight.
Last night I bought a couple different types of dry cat food especially made for "older cats." He loved both and ate to his heart's content. However, the switch may not have agreed with him.
I will see how he reacts over that next couple of days.

Most vets that I have known have suggested that if you're changing food, you do it gradually and by mixing old and new for a transition period. Might be worth a try.

MBarnum, I hope DC Freddy is feeling more fit real soon.
-
I'm up, I'm up - slept very well and honestly thought it must be around eleven - still got eight hours.

TOD 2: I think my favorite Kander and Ebb score (twice I've typed Kander and Egg -- oy) is "70, Girls, 70." Great songs, even if the script is lousy. It was one of those finds that I played over and over again. My sister didn't break that one, though.
-
Those who've read the third Kritzer book know that I was aware of Mr. Kander before Mr. Ebb - the musical A Family Affair, which I saw at a small theater on Santa Monica Blvd. in its first production after the unsuccessful Broadway one. I remember it vividly - Terry Becker was in it, John Gabriel, and Suzy someone whose last name escapes me right at this moment (she was in the film of West Side Story). This was Kander pre-Ebb - they lyrics were by James and William Goldman.

My first Kander and Ebb sighting was the song My Coloring Book on one of Barbra's early albums (her first?) and I Don't Care Much either on the same album or a later one. I know I heard at least some of Flora, the Red Menace on LP or on The Ed Sullivan Show, but it was, of course, Cabaret, the LP, that put them in my pantheon. And when I saw that electrifying opening number on the very first televised Tony Awards, well, it was a life changer.
-
DR John G., I like my Kander and Eggs over easy. ;)
-
I can't see Mamie.
But I'll be OK. Really.

On that same trip we toured then-new Lincoln Center, including the performing arts division of New York Public Library. That's where I decided to pursue a career as a librarian.
I love that!! :)

The first Kander and Ebb on stage was Cabaret at the Ahmanson, with, yes, Signe Hasso, and also Leo Fuchs, Robert Salvio (the best Emcee ever - he did the musical of Billy Budd - Billy - at the Billy Rose Theater, a one-night disaster, and then he died very young), Melissa Hart (who I eventually recorded on one of the Unsung Musicals albums), Gene Rupert, and David Rounds. Then a year later at the Music Center it was the pre-Broadway The Happy Time. I've been hooked ever since, but don't love everything they wrote.

I will miss the 8 pm. Mamie Van Doren movie....Untamed Youth (but DR MBARNUM has sent me that on DVD) - I will arrive home during THE BEAT GENERATION and get to see the rest of the Mamie-Palooza....including GUNS, GIRLS, AND GANGSTERS, which I have never seen.
Joan Olander says her movie name is a combination of Mamie (Eisenhower) and (Charles) Van Doren - both 1950's icons.

Hello Everyone!
The latest Broadway Radio Show is up on this groovy site for your audio edification.....this time it's The "Mad" Era as we prepare for the season finale of "Mad Men" by looking at 1960's Broadway musicals actually set in New York in the 1960's!
Enjoy

Oh, I hear you DR Ron Pulliam. I'm only amused internally. :)

Thanks for the Babs link, DR John G.

DR Jrand62, I don't know how you have time to watch any movies, what with working, directing a show, and learning [a lot of] lines for another show. :P
And now you are... a vision in green! :)

Kander and Ebb....Kander and Ebb....Kander and Ebb....hmmm....got nothing.
I bet that you are familiar with some songs from Cabaret like: Willkommen, Mein Herr, Maybe This Time , or Cabaret .

I changed my avatar to a lovely Aura Photograph showing my good health and prosperity.... to balance it, here is a picture of my ten year old self with my cousins Carol and Daryl at the Smith family reunion in 1960. For some reason, I think my shorts had a print lining ... I do not remember the details.
What is puzzling to me is that no one in my family OR Carol & Daryl's family are related to anyone named Smith. I don't know what we were doing there. It was 1960 and the newest car I see there is a 1955 or 1956 Buick....so obviously the Smiths were not up to date. I am sure I was wearing flipflops.

UPS has dropped off the paper and my day at Toyland is over.
I may stay and tape "Don't Ask Me Not To Sing," which is the longest number in the score.
I saw the same cast of CABARET as BK on tour in Cincinnati around 1966; the original production was absolutely wonderful. The last revisal at the Roundabout was far too tawdry, an example of naughty boys saying "look, mommy, aren't we being dirty?" The degeneracy of Berlin in that deliberately raunchy production had so much more to do with the director's and choreographer's psychosexual fantasies - buffed well-buiult boys in leather and scrawny, skanky crack ho's with unshaved armpits - but I found it musically sloppy, ridiculously louche, and acted and directed with sledgehammer subtlety, and it was a hit. They're bringing it back.

george - Is there a point to Oprah as Herod? Is it just for injecting a little humor? (They're not saying she's like Herod, are they?)
I have no idea what was behind that "concept" other than one of the actors last night told me that when they were auditioning for the role, no one was any good. So they went with this because the performer is pretty good and has performed for Harlequin Productions and they like her (although I've been told that she's QUITE the diva backstage).
-
First and foremost, thanks to all of the lovely folks who welcomed me here today (as well as last evening, during my late night debut). As for serenading you here now and then, I may have to look into some discussion board serenade software first. :)
TOD: My Kander and Ebb memory is a little unclear, per the earliest stuff. I'm sure I was well aware of CABARET, at least via the audio, and maybe the film first. But my first live performance of K&E was, I believe, the pre-Broadway tryout of CHICAGO in my home town of Philly. I know I saw Chita and Gwen, so it had to be pre-Bway. I was blown away by the style, the music, the down low grit, and the humor of it all.
Years later, I got to play Billy up in Telluride, CO, at 9,000 feet altitude. "Reach for the Gun" is quite the challenge with no oxygen. :D

Princess Anne was running at Ascot?

DR SINGDAW to reply to your generous post a page back:
I can do it - because I am retired and don't also have to work!!! One day a week....and sometimes not even that.
And of course, planning and scheduling is key. Since I only do theatre in the summer/fall - I can do most of the pre production work during the winter.....

The ones in DR MBarnum's back yard were buff boys in leather 30-40 years ago. Nothing sadder than Mikey chasing an over the hill rent boy, is there? And I bet those oxygen canisters are heavy to tote after them.

MR BK has been quiet today.

I just realized that the original Broadway production of CABARET opened in 1966, because my first trip to Manhattan was Christmas 1966 and it was impossible to get a ticket for the show. I must have seen the tour in Cincinnati in 1968.

And Big Brother begins a new season next week....don't forget!
Apparently there are a few new twists this year:
1.With even more houseguests this season - 16 - and two extra weeks of Big Brother, there's now going to be TWO twists to the season. This season will see three houseguests nominated for eviction instead of the usual two. This now explains the couch instead of two chairs Julie presented to us in her house tour. More news is expected to come out during the season premiere Wednesday June 26th at 8.00 et/pt.
2.The second twists involves BB viewers, who will be more involved in what happens inside the house (very similar to the first season of Big Brother Canada). Fans can vote for the Big Brother Most Valuable Player now. The power that the BB MVP receives will be announced during the premiere.

Our company has left and I'm doing laundry. The day they arrived it was beautiful as it was again today. The 2 full days in-between it rained on and off.
We had a fun time in spite of the rain. :)
-
Welcome, DR Ryacko!
-
Hello. I went to Costco for cat litter and came back with a key lime pie.
I sincerely hope you don't confuse the two at some later point in the evening.
-
Nominating 3 people on Big Brother sounds like a nifty change.
A few years ago I picked up some homegrown DVDrs of season 1 of Big Brother...watched a couple of episodes...the show was way lower budget back then...but at the time it first aired I just loved it! Still have fond memories of some of the season one contestants...'specially Brittany...but not so much Chicken George.
Of course CBS acts as if season one of that show never existed.
-
One day, DR Jane, I am going to plan my Los Angeles trip to happen while Big Brother is airing, and then I will have you plead with your cousin to let me get a behind the scenes look at the goings on. 8)
-
and after the things you post here about every man you see on a screen and think is hot, she'd have to be out of her mind or detest her cousin to introduce you.

I shall shortly be on my way to see Next to Normal - I would much rather be staying at home and relaxing.
-
If stocks go down every time Bernanke speaks, why do they let him speak on TV?
Keith laughed at this.
Me too!
-
Welcome DR Ryacko!!
-
Tomorrow night I'm going to see Barry Manilow. I have to confess I'm very excited about it and feel like I'm 14 years old again and listening to my Barry Manilow albums in my bedroom at home
-
Why do I find this news that Smart phones are exploding funny?
;D

I guess I had better keep in better touch with him in preparation ;) I did spend time visiting with him at my niece's wedding.

How nice to see DR ryacko joining us in the living room last night! Welcome, sir.
Perhaps you can serenade us all with a ditty every now and then! :)
SpiceDaddy, how do you know that ryacko even knows a ditty.
-
I've heard he puts on a really good show.
-
Thanks for your comments, John G, vixmom and TCB!
Did I thank you for your email, TCB if not, thanks (If so, thanks again. )
As usual, DR Fred, it is, I, who thank you.
-
Carpenter didn't come today. No surprise there. I don't think I've ever had one show up the first day
-
Trapper came and took the traps. I paid him in cash. He looked at me like I was doing something wrong, lol. It's not like I can deduct animal trapping expense, so I don't care about writing a check
-
Hey FJL, can I deduct animal trapping expense? He is going to send me a receipt
-
SpiceDaddy, how do you know that ryacko even knows a ditty.
I figure if he sings in the Kritzerland evenings, he knows a ditty. Or three. :)
-
I figured out a way to temporarily block the hole until Sunday when the carpenter say's he'll be here. Hope it will work
-
The Karma feels better having the traps gone...or something like that
-

VIBES YOU NEVER NEED HIS SERVICES AGAIN!!!!

There was a little squirrel sitting by my other bedroom window this morning, I rapped on the window and it jumped about 4 feet straight into the air and ran away. Got a chuckle out of that

Good luck, and that the carpenter finally shows!
-
The cats are acting totally normal and have been all week. That tells me more than checking the empty traps day after day. She and her kits are long gone. It looks like rain, though. That's when she came the first time
-
And the word of the day is: PECCANT!
And The Song Of The Day Is: NO ONE MOURNS THE WICKED
-
Looks like we made it..... Barry Manilow was my favorite as I went through puberty and now as I go through menopause I finally get to see him. Maybe TMI, but it really made me laugh when I thought of that today.

Intermission at Flashdance the Musical. What a feeling.
-
Well, the gin and tonic was good. And the crowd is talking about the Spurs game.
-
Sergio Trujillo has some choreography skills. Some.
-
Instead if an orchestra, there's an eight-piece band. And a lot of '80s music.
-
Nice Nicky Photo yesterday DR TCB!!
Thank you Jrand. I wanted to prove to everyone that Nicky did have eyeballs. The previous photo made him looked like he was stuffed. Oh, Nicky said he wanted to congratulate you on being cast.
-
Those who've read the third Kritzer book know that I was aware of Mr.
Wong?

I sort of remember how different it was. Didn't America vote out who they wanted? And they kept getting rid of all the interesting people.

Or a seat at the live evictions. That would be very cool.

In the Interesting Juxtapositions Department, this morning I encountered a dude that looked like this:

With this blasting out of his motorcycle stereo system:

Hilarity ensued. ;D
My first time in a leather bar was in San Francisco in 1971 or 72. I remember it was a Monday Night, because Monday Night was Barbara Stanwyck Night, and all of these leather boys were sitting there, eating their popcorn, with tears running down their faces as they watched some Stanwyck classic where she was the wronged woman.

Evening, y'all.
-
Intermission at Flashdance the Musical. What a feeling.
DR John, I don't think you were here when DR Jason was posting. He is the guy at the merchandise booth.
-
Home from rehearsal. The warm evening is comfortable with just a fan blowing, I'm noshing on some Trader Joe's Quinoa and Black Bean Tortilla Chips, and TCM is on in the background. Wish I'd been equipped to record the whole evening's offerings. Will make that happen soon.
-
This organic salsa is ... interesting. Okay, but could be quite a bit better. Kind of a strange balance of flavors. I don't care about it being organic, I tried this one because of its looks. I guess I'm still on the hunt for that perfect one. Of course what I should be doing is making it myself.

I went out an had my hairs cut again today - it's more like Ginny's or Cilla's now
-
Belated Greetings to new DR Ryacko!!
-
I saw Caberet in the movies when I was in high school and i loved it - I never saw the stage version until a year or so ag o when the Vixter and I went to see it at a local Equity theatre
-
I saw Chicago on Broadway in August of '76 (I think it was '76)
LOVED it!
-
The Vixter saw The Scottsboro Boys on Broadway when she was in high school and she LOVED it - I had to make due with clips on You Tube ...
-
and that is all I have at the moment
-
Oh I wish I knew you were going I would have asked you to torment the Merch Guy for me
I'm sorry I didn't know. But the torment was also happening to the audience.

Hello Everyone!
The latest Broadway Radio Show is up on this groovy site for your audio edification.....this time it's The "Mad" Era as we prepare for the season finale of "Mad Men" by looking at 1960's Broadway musicals actually set in New York in the 1960's!
Enjoy
Donald
Thanks Donald, it sounds great. Of course I am too young to remember the 1960's.
-
It wasn't awful, actually, and that may have been its greatest sin. The writers seem to have made some decent choices in the changes they made in reshaping the story, so that it becomes about the dreams of all of the characters and how reality can crush those dreams. But the music doesn't manage to give the story enough heart. It's a lot of '80s-style wailing and no honest emotion, good melodies or terribly interesting rhymes. The songs in the first act that are not in the movie are all deadly dull, as are most of the songs in the second act. And my favorite from the movie, "Gloria," is ineptly staged and used.
-
I forgot to mention that today is Peter Filichia's birthday.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PETER FILICHIA!

I hear strains of "Dueling Banjos."

From my posts today you would think that I never watch or listen to anything of quality.
Today? :-*
Thank you, Ron.
-
well i suppose I had better get me to sleep it is an early day tomorrow
-
I saw "Singin' in the Rain" on Broadway and remember how Twyla Tharp staged the six or seven classic dances from the movie as faithfully as possible while throwing in some good stuff of her own. Well, Sergio Trujillo has staged the titled song as faithfully as possible. Only problem: That choreography hasn't aged well at all, and here in the climactic moments of the show, it all seems so silly.
-
And that's it for me. Good night, all.

I have seen Barry in concert five times. His concerts were wonderful four out of five times. The one bad concert was just after his album "2:00 AM PARADISE CAFE"had just come out and he sang the entire album. He did a couple of medleys of his hits, but the rest was stuff I had never heard. It wasn't what I wanted him to sing.
But the next time, he was back to being wonderful.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO PETER FILICHIA!

Well, I believe my work here is done.
G'night!

Back from Next to Normal and now must write some notes.
