Title: THE LIGHT BULB MOMENT
Post by: bk on June 21, 2013, 12:14:08 AM
Well, you've read the notes (and if you haven't, just click on the Haines His Way on the top left of the page), the notes had a light bulb moment, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they haven't had a light bulb moment yet, hence haven't come home.

Sorry all, to have appeared to be so rude - I went to bed last night, forgetting to log out.

I just learned that a lost neighborhood puppy has been found, so that's always heartwarming news.

I have not seen a production of Next to Normal. I listened to the album a few times when it first came out. I think it is time to re-visit.

Here's an illicit videotaping of the complete original Broadway production:

This is fun. It's

TV Show Cast Members Doing Commercials (http://archive.org/details/AssortedTvShowCastMemberCommercials)

The shows are from the 1950s and 1960s. Sky King does a spot along with the Lone Ranger and Patty Duke. Donna Douglas, Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan and Max Baer, Jr. are there, along with Beaver and Dennis the Menace and others. There is a lot of

Pete and Gladys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_and_Gladys)

Remember that show with Harry Morgan (long before MASH) and Cara Williams?

I remember that soft dog food in a plastic bag, called Prime. I can't find anything about it now, there are all sorts of dog food products called Prime or that have Prime as part of the name so that one has fallen through the cracks

I knew if I looked long enough I could find something. I started looking with Gaines Prime and that pulled up all sorts of stuff.

Good morning, all! Hopefully, today will see the finish of the ROBERTA orchestra parts. I'd like to be at Toyland around 9, so that I can get the A/C going before Peter arrives at 10. I just heard on the  hews that the temperature will reach 82 today.

I need to make a bank stop on the way, and that's my day.

TOD:

It’s been a Blu-only week:

THE HUSTLER (1961)
THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP
PERFECT FRIDAY – It’s a long time since I saw this British caper film but time has not been kind to it. By 1970 the “swinging London” elements already seemed out of date and the trendy editing looks dated as well. What’s interesting about this release is that apart from John Dankworth’s original score, the disc also contains a version of the film with an alternate unused score (as well as some different dialogue) completely different in style to Dankworth’s light, breezy jazz, being a bit like 18th century dance pastiche music which at the end adds Ray Conniff style vocals! No information is given as to who composed this alternate score.

I tried to get through the Mamie Van Doren films last night.....and made it to about half an hour of SEX KITTENS GO TO COLLEGE....an Albert Zugsmith epic....that had a title tune by Conway Twitty titled "Sex Pots Go To College" - which means even Zugsmith had reservations about THAT title.

My favorite Van Doren film is COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL......

I remember Pete & Gladys.....if I am not mistaken, Verna Felton was also carted over from December Bride to take part in the festivities...  I wanted it to be funnier than it was....I just remember one episode:  the title characters had forgotten they were invited to an anniversary party for friends.  They didn't have enough cash in the house to buy a present, so they had to empty all of the piggy banks.  Cara carried all of the coins by making a pouch of her skirt....and they tried to cross the street and were endlessly stopped by the red light....dropping all of the coins JUST TOO MANY TIMES....  I don't think I watched again after being bored by this episode....

I thought the latest update to Safari had fixed the You Tube problems but no, cannot get two minutes into that Next to Normal video - so I don't know if it will help, but I'm downloading Google Chrome right now and will use that - if that works, bye bye Safari until they listen to people who use it and put it back the way it wuz when everything worked better, including a simple ability to play videos on You Tube.

That said, I hope Google Chrome is faster than the damn download - which is going to take twenty-five minutes to download 50 mb - which should really take about five minutes tops - that could be their site or a lot of people downloading at the same time, but it's ridiculous.

Good morning, all you DR's, and thanks for the later welcomes I missed yesterday.

By the way, whenever I see "DR" here, I think of Fyvuush Finkel, who used to call everyone "Doctor". He'd say, "Dr. Yacko, how are you? *reaches out to shake hands, then flips palm up* Loan me fifty."  One of his many classic schtick jokes.

You're right, Bruce, they've made a mess of Safari. I use it for a few sites, and Firefox for the rest. I'm looking at a browser called Opera now.

Next to Normal. Hmmmm. Liked it somewhat, but for the life of me, none of the music stuck with me. And I'm not sure I need to see it again, unless I'm supporting a friend in it.  Sadly, I saw Alice on the tour's opening night in L.A., and she sang under the tone all night. Must have been having a bad night. Otherwise, I liked what she did with the role.

DVD - The Newsroom, Season 1, Disc 2. Loving it so far.
CD player in the car - Manhattan Transfer's "Tonin'". Their 60's R&B album with guests artists, like Laura Nyro, Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, Frankie Valli, BB King and Ruth Brown. Fun driving music.

Happy Solstice, All!

I first started reading Anna Quindlen when she wrote for the NY Times. I felt a connection to her, in much the same way Ginny did, even though I'm not a mother or wife. She writes about things which resonate with me. One True Thing and Object Lessons are two of my favorite books of hers. I also like Black and Blue very much, even though it's a difficult book to read as it deals with domestic violence.

If you don't enjoy reading her, though, then so be it. I hope that the 3 books I mentioned are not the ones you have tried to read and put away. If so, horses for courses.

I cannot get through a Jonathan Franzen book. I've tried. I got through a few chapters of The Corrections and said, nope, ain't gonna finish this and it went back to the Library. I tried again with Freedom and again, I stopped a few chapters in. I also cannot abide books by Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code, etc.) or Stephen King. I've tried but never finished a single SK book. They don't work for me on any level.

That doesn't completely answer your question but I hope it helps

I have several episodes of PETE AND GLADYS on homegrown DVDrs. Have only watched a few episodes. Not bad, but not exactly DECEMBER BRIDE.

An actor I interviewed guest starred on the show once. It was a very unpleasant experience, he said.

I am home  sick from work today. Woke up with a sore stomach, which is feeling better, but I am quite tired. I see another nap in the near future.

Anyway, it is giving me some time to spend with cat Freddy. He still won't eat and he won't drink now, either. I think he is nearing the end and I am going to need to decide soon on when to do the inevitable. It is always a very difficult decision. I know he is not feeling good. All he does is sit in the hallway. No cuddling. No begging for treats. No running about. Poor little guy.

I have finally located a desk/secretary for ANGEL STREET.  It doesn't have the interior drawers I need, but I have a plan to work around that.  It was $299 and I can sell it at the end of the show.   :D

Very nice find, Jack!

BK, could that be the problem with the YouTube clip...that it's such a large (single) file that enough of it hadn't loaded before the playback got to the end of what had downloaded?  That's happened to me before.

I agree with you on these.  Well 2 out of 3 anyway as I haven't read a Stephen King novel.

One True Thing is the only book of hers I have read and I liked it.  Keith fondly remembers her father.

I am really disgusted that Food TV is firing Paula Dean because she was asked if she had ever used the word "nigger' in a deposition.  She answered yes that she used it about a man who put a gun to her head when she worked in a bank, and that she had probably used it since then but it was a long time ago.   This is just political correctness gone way too far.  It would be amazing if someone raised in the south her age hasn't used that word.

Seriously I don't like racial slurs, but what happened to free speech?  I'm done with food tv

Isn't that Yvonne De Carlo singing "I'M STILL BEER?"

Perhaps DR CILLA LIZ will post some photos from the Barry Manilow Concert!

Not sure if I can swing it, I'll have my cell phone.

Unless Patti LuPone is there, I doubt Barry will mind.  He used to allow photos at his concerts.

You just used the word though I don't think that is what they meant ;)

Did they fire her before there was backlash over this?

They announced this afternoon that they wouldn't renew her contact after this month.

Well, it's time for me to leave.  I'm meeting my niece at the Urban Onion, a local restaurant.  Tonight will be the kick-off for tomorrow's Capital City Pride (http://www.theolympian.com//2013/06/20/2592963/capital-city-pride-festival-enters.html).

Anyway, have a good rest of the evening, all!

George, you don't have to say a local restaurant.  You can just say The Urban Onion where David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel always eat when they are in town.

I can see the headline tomorrow in Variety:

YACKO TO TRY OPERA!

HAHAHA, LOVE IT!

Too late. I do a corporate show that's a send up of The Three Tenors, complete with a full out Nessun Dorma as a finale.  :)

Damn!

Good evening, all.

DR MBarnum...very sorry to hear that you are at that sad stage with DC Freddy.  I hope you have a trusted vet to consult with.

Watched "Mary Poppins" tonight. What fun. This movie had a big impact on me when I was 2 or 3 and was taken to see it for the first time. It remains one of the best movie musicals of all time, IMHO. The Sherman Brothers score is aces, and the cast is flawless. David Tomlinson reveals more each time I watch the movie.

Back from opening night (of a two-weekend run) of this R&H revue.  Nothing much to say about it.  I'd probably like to see an expert group do it sometime.  In short, this ain't it.  But it's fun enough to play.

Okay, two things.

First, NOBODY was 2 or 3 when MARY POPPINS was released!  So just stop that right now, DR John G.      Good lord.

Second, for all the LD and DVD copies of this I've owned, I don't think I've watched it in more than twenty years, and I believe this shall have to be rectified in short order.

True!  And as far as I know, there is no other "Urban Onion" in the world! :D

Well, my my, the Fox Network is getting more grown up all the time.  I turned on our Fox Channel to catch the 10:00 News, and I caught the last few minutes of a show called THE FOLLOWING(?).  This guy walks into the bathroom where a young lady is in the shower.  He starts apologizing to her for something (not walking into her in the shower) and she pushes back the shower curtain to reveal another guy in the shower.  Now that is not so shocking, but in this show, the young man then climbs into the shower (fully clothed) with the other two people and all three of them start hugging and kissing.

Now THAT you don't see every day.

I like this one too. There are more on my facebook page.   I had a really good time. I was in with the crazy fanilows, but they were enthusiastic and it was cool.  He did do a beautiful ballad from HARMONY.  Other than that it was all his hits.

If the rest of his musical HARMONY is as good as the ballad that he sang tonight, I can't wait to see it.  He said it will be in Atlanta and then LA.  Will be anxious to hear about it.

There was a lot of dry ice fog so they get the beams from the lights.  Makes it harder to take a clear photo

I must go to sleep now.  I have to get up extra early to help my niece and the Olympia PFLAG set up their booth for tomorrow's Capital City Pride celebration!  I'll stick around for the parade and see what happens after that.

Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow (a Jane Curtain on Saturday Night Live reference). ;)
