Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the smell of burnt oil, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently burning the midnight oil and reciting Joyce Kilmer's Trees.

Ipsy-Pipsy!
-
I saw a bee stuck in a cobweb at the top of my conservatory this morning. A spider was crawling towards it but I managed to rescue the bee and send it outside.
-
It's a bright sunny day. I'm driving to the south coast of England for a spot of sightseeing and later will call on friends Dawn and Mark who I haven't seen for a while.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning, all! I awoke at 4am and could not go back to sleep, so around 5:30 I got out of bed. There will not be enough coffee today to keep me going, I fear.
First stop, post office, then barber, then Toyland, where I will finish packing the music and fill out the customs form before I head home.
-
good morning to all
-
Vibes to all those that need them.
-
Oh yes, vibes. Many, many vibes to everybody. Because it's Tuesday. Because it's June.
-
Good morning, all.
More sleep needed here, for sure. I might just crawl back in for a bit of same.
-
Good morning, all.
And ipsy-pipsy to you, Slaphappy!

Off to work.

More wonderful illustrated notes. What a pleasure to see these places. A few observations...
Kiru looks just great. Love the design on the playing cards.
I have a couple of Kentucky Boys-type of hamburger jernts in my distant memory, too. One didn't even have that distinctive a name; in fact, I haven't yet found the name! But can I still taste that burger? Yes! And I have a good sense of what the fries looked and tasted like, which is much more unusual.
Oh my, that Wan-Q. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. There it is, that semi-Tiki aspect. The Kowloon looks wonderful, too.
Biffs! Do I remember Biffs? And why am I not sure? It sounds, and looks, so familiar. But it should indeed "look" familiar, because of the menu cover design credit! From Wiki: George McManus (January 23, 1884 – October 22, 1954) was an American cartoonist best known as the creator of Irish immigrant Jiggs and his wife Maggie, the central characters in his syndicated comic strip, Bringing Up Father. Yes!
I loved discovering the Vine St. Ontra, but never knew the others. I have no problem at all picturing one on the Miracle Mile. It would just fit right in. The Beverly Drive one threw me because I have no memory of that kind of building being there. I suspect it was gone by 1974 when I was getting to know B.H.
More to follow, in a bit...
-
TOD:
I used to love going to Pancho's in Seattle.
It was owned by my uncle and they had a ground beef sandwich there, "the Special," that was to die for.
-
I remember my first time in the Hollywood Blvd. Diamond Jim's as clearly as I remember anything. It was on a weekday evening early in my life there, and I was just looking for something new to eat. I had the spinach omelet with more spinach on the side, probably with fries, and it was just one of those places that made me feel like a million dollars eating there.
I didn't know that Wilshire one, either, but there was another on Wilshire in West L.A., a little west of the 405 freeway -- my memory places it on the south side of the street, around Barrington Ave. or maybe as far west as Bundy. That was in the late '70s, possibly after the Hollywood one had closed.
-
You are quite right, DR ChasSmith, and I forgot to say it, earlier - another wonderful set of illustrated notes today! Most enjoyable.
-
Oh, my beloved Hamburger Hamlet. I'd forgotten about the menu being in a spiral binder. From the looks of it, that's the one I knew in the early/mid '70s. I'd give anything to see every page, for all the descriptions, and to help in recreating a few things.
The Hollywood Blvd. Hamlet was my first one -- actually, my first food, LITERALLY, in Hollywood. I'm 99% certain that my friends and I went in there on our first walk from the motel on Sunset around to Hollywood and Highland, and we said, "oh, a hamburger place, let's just try this...". And history was begun.
Favorite locations were that one, Westwood, Sunset Strip, and I think the one on Wilshire that was I believe a little east of the Ambassador. Just far enough down there to be considered a "downtown" one. Oh, and Bedford Drive in B.H. But hell, though laid out differently, they were all comfortable and welcoming.
I flipped through the entire Marilyn Lewis book, and was (as I nearly always am in such matters) disappointed that there wasn't a lot more detail about some of the locations and menu items. But there are a few choice morsels. The book does cover a broader view of their lives together, and it seems to do so pretty well.
-
I used to love Diamond Jim's. Also, Hamburger Hamlet.

I knew Big Boy food and decor from the Frisch's and Manner's versions in Ohio -- and whatever it was called in Michigan (DR Ginny helped me on this once, and already I forget what it was there!!). In California it's Bob's, of course, and I only remember eating at a couple of them: on Wilshire near Highland or Rossmore , and one on Hawthorne Blvd. in Torrance. My occasional visits to these two in the mid/late '80s were always a nice trip down memory lane.
But the magnificent one in Burbank, which BK and I drove by it on our way to the Smoke House, is the be-all and end-all of Big Boys. Simply magnificent. And I still have yet to eat in that one.
-
Didn't know Nickodell's, unfortunately. It looks great. The only place I remember wandering into down there, after seeing some movie at the Continental, was diagonally opposite the original Paramount gate on what looks like a street called Marathon before Paramount swallowed up that block. It was probably a Mexican jernt, since all I remember is the yummy quesadilla.

A question for BK or perhaps DRs Jane or Druxy (with apologies if I've asked this one before)...
Do you remember where one would have gotten an authentic Orange Julius in Hollywood? I keep thinking there was a stand (or storefront?) on the Blvd., but haven't found evidence to support that.
I do remember one in B.H., an actual storefront in the front of the building (like Bank of America or some such) at Wilshire and Beverly Drive. Boy, you'd never find anything like that there now.
-
Well, no marriage equality ruling from the Supreme Court today.

Lovely illustrated notes....I love a tour of former L.A.
Vibes for DR SANDRA.
I read in yesterday's posts that a Blonde Hellcat was On The Loose!
I hope nobody was injured.
-
We also had Frisch's Big Boy in Indiana where we often went before or after going to the drive-in movies. I liked the sandwich called the Brawny Lad....didn't much care for the sauce on the Big Boy.
-
Nice photos from DR Ryacko yesterday as well.
Of course The Bucks County Playhouse is where Miss Frances Farmer made her return to the stage in 1957 in The Chalk Garden.
She also signed the jalopy that was parked out front that was signed by all the guest stars.....my photo of it is somewhere.....

I liked that one, too, with the thick slice of raw onion.
Also, the one with ham and a "special white sauce" -- can't remember what it's called. Discovered that one at a Manners car-hop drive-in.
And I was always happy to find the chili/spaghetti tradition upheld at Big Boy.
-
Oh! I see they call something the "Chili Size". Boy, that's a term I haven't seen in years. Basically, the name for a chili-burger, right? I think the Hamburger Hamlet called it that, too...maybe...
-
Well, I have neither crawled back into bed for a little more sleep, nor gotten my arse moving toward getting anything done today.
I think I'll try both of those things, and in exactly that order.

According to all the blogs tomorrow will be the day. It's the last day of the term and unless they hold it off until next term (which will not happen) it will be tomorrow.

Oh, I do remember that I ate at Bob's Big Boy in Burbank on my very first trip to Los Angeles back in the late 90s.
My buddy Ron went with me on my first 2 or 3 trips south to attend the Ray Court's Hollywood Show and we always would have a delicious meal at Bob's.

Things you might or might not know about Hamburger Hamlet (copied from a sale item on eBay for six of Marilyn Lewis' cookbooks):
"Up for bid is an eclectic collection of cookbooks, encompassing everything from down-home cooking, French, Italian, Mediterranean, Mexican, Jewish, Passover, Top chefs, top restaurant menu recipes, cooking classes, baking, deserts, main dishes, appetizers, snacks, picnics, BBQ's, health foods, etc etc etc. Some have notes, or changes penciled in, some have Marilyn Lewis's embossed stamp. These are from her estate, probably the ones she used to study for the restaurants. There are six boxes in total, five with the cookbooks, and one with all her personal hand-written or typed notes and photocopies. This one also has notes on how to run the restaurant, recipes, personnel notes and misc. They are up for individual bids. They will be shipped media mail since they weigh an average of over thirty pounds each.
"In 1950, Marilyn met Harry Lewis, an aspiring actor, who told her about his idea for a restaurant called Hamburger Hamlet. Within few months, fueled with determination, she locked a location on the Sunset strip and the first Hamburger Hamlet was born. With no cooking experience, Lewis developed a simple, yet delicious menu and started feeding ‘the glitterati in Hollywood’. The restaurant was an immediate success and became a popular hang-out for the stars. The reason they gave for the name "Hamburger Hamlet"was because they meant for the eatery to be a restaurant where actors could hang out, and that it was every actor's dream to play Hamlet. The restaurant was successful and grew into a chain of 24 locations. In the last years of his life, Dean Martin had dinner at a Hamlet counter every Sunday night, and Warren Beatty used to rendezvous in the booths, but grandmothers also loved to eat there. The Lewises took Hamburger Hamlet public in 1969, and sold the company for $33 million in 1997. After the sale, the couple opened new independent restaurants in the Los Angeles area.
"Harry signed the lease because he thought Marilyn could cook (but she couldn't), so she started studying cookbooks. They developed a simple menu based around hamburgers and other foods that didn't require an oven at that time. The Hamlet would stay open late and become a kind of hybrid: the first hangout/final destination/family restaurant in Los Angeles.
"The first Hamburger Hamlet was opened in 1950 on Sunset Blvd; because of their commitment to quality, flavor and “simply marvelous food and drinks,” it became an immediate success. Hamburger Hamlet quickly became a Hollywood landmark and was packed with celebrities every night of the week. Over the next 3 decades, they expanded throughout Southern California and Washington DC. To date, there is still nothing to rival the great food, casual comfort and superb service of Hamburger Hamlet!"{/i]

Here in the Olympia area, we have Big Tom's and what must be an off-shoot, Eagan's (I vaguely remember an "Eagan's Big Tom," too). They use very similar logos. I go to the Tumwater Eagan's every Friday for their deluxe cheeseburger basket. This particular Eagan's has a rewards card...for every burger you buy, you get a point. Ten points and you get a free burger! The deluxe cheeseburger is my favorite, so I buy those to get the points, but then I can get a more expensive burger for free. ;)

More often than not, my family's summer excursions were to one of the local lakes in southeast South Carolina. Here's a photo of you-know-who inside an "enclosure" set up by my grandfather at one of the lake locations circa 1949 or 1950. Please note the T-shirt -- it reads "Johnston Bears". That was the name of the high school teams. For a podunk little town, the Johnston Bears won quite a few state championships in the 1930s and 1940s.

Well, I have neither crawled back into bed for a little more sleep, nor gotten my arse moving toward getting anything done today.
I think I'll try both of those things, and in exactly that order.
I was actually able to get up very early (for me) and get my 1998 Ford Escort to the dealer before 8:00 am. They did have me listed as a drop-off, so there wasn't a specific appointment time, but I explained that I had stuff do to last night (the audition and the feeding of a friend's cats) and all was well. If they only do what they expect to do, it'll cost less than $450. That would be nice. It's only been about 13,000 miles since I brought it in two years ago, so not a lot has happened. I haven't been extremely diligent about getting the oil changed, but the 3,000 mile rule is rather arbitrary anyway, isn't it? The owner's manual actually says to change the oil every 3,750 miles, so I'm not worried at all. :)
-
Well, no marriage equality ruling from the Supreme Court today.
Hopefully, they will "be on the right side of history." ::)

I'm up, I'm up - finally, eight and a half hours of sleep (I didn't get to bed until two).

To answer ChasSmith's two queries: The Hollywood Blvd. Orange Julius was next to the New View Theater (in the 70s, the Pussycat) on the south side of the boulevard and also next to the original location of Larry Edmunds). I'm not at all sure it was an Orange Julius in the 70s, though, but it was definitely a hot dog stand and may have had a knockoff Orange Julius, hence the confusion.
Now I've forgotten the other query - I'll go find it again and then post the answer.
-
Didn't know Nickodell's, unfortunately.
Here's the other one. The place you're talking about was a real favorite of mine - location just as you describe, diagonally across from the old main gate (the one you see in Sunset Blvd. and countless other movies and the one I used in the 70s) - directly east and on the same side as the main gate was the famous casting building, where I read for and got The Young Lawyers. That was the one and only time I was in that building - after that casting was always held in producers' offices on the lot itself. Anyway, the restaurant was called Oblath's - if you didn't want the commissary you went to Oblath's or Nickodell's or Lucy's (across the street on the south side of Melrose and the only one of those that's left - and still as mediocre as it always was - it's enduring popularity has always baffled me). But Oblath's had great food, and one of my most vivid memories of it was shooting one of the two Happy Days episodes I did, and going to Oblath's for lunch with some of the cast. I walked in and there sitting in the very first booth next to the door - John Wayne. Couldn't believe it and only wish I'd spoken to him.
-
BTW, I loved Orange Julius (yes, it's in the first Kritzer book) - mine was located at Pico and Robertson on the southwest corner. It was actually inside a drug store, but had an open part that looked out onto Robertson so you could order from there and eat outside on a stool. Directly south of it was our big newsstand, where I bought my first MAD Magazine (probably in 1954 - the comic book size version - those were the first 23 issues) and the occasional Superman comic and, of course, my beloved TV Guides.

-
Getting ready to go to the rehearsal of Act Two ANGEL STREET.
-
As to Orange Julius, another thanks, because that hot dog stand is probably what I'm thinking of. I just know I was introduced to the drink fairly early on, somewhere along there.
I'll bet there's a lot of confusion, on my part as well as anybody's, as to which places were actual Orange Julius stands, which ones weren't but served the drink, or which ones weren't at all and served a knockoff drink. If that makes sense...
-
And which was the case at Stan's Donuts?

A question for BK or perhaps DRs Jane or Druxy (with apologies if I've asked this one before)...
Do you remember where one would have gotten an authentic Orange Julius in Hollywood? I keep thinking there was a stand (or storefront?) on the Blvd., but haven't found evidence to support that.
I do remember one in B.H., an actual storefront in the front of the building (like Bank of America or some such) at Wilshire and Beverly Drive. Boy, you'd never find anything like that there now.
I was never a fan or Orange Julius. I think I tried it once, but the magic never happened.
The best were from Stan's Donuts when the outside window was an Orange Julius stand. I talked to him a few years back and asked why his were so much better than elsewhere. He used more of the Julius powder than anywhere else.
-
And which was the case at Stan's Donuts?

Well, there you go. If they didn't have that flavor and texture, they weren't much of a Julius.
The contemporary one I tried at the mall? That one not only didn't have the flavor and texture, I'm not sure it ever saw an orange.

Yes, I tried one of those a year or two ago, and it was a complete waste. Nothing at all like the original drink.
I believe I have mentioned this before..... Put ice & orange juice in a blender. Add vanilla ice cream and vanilla. Blend. The ice is optional ;)

Well, there you go. If they didn't have that flavor and texture, they weren't much of a Julius.
They were just like a traditional Julius only more flavorful. Hey, maybe he used better orange juice, but they were definitely an official Orange Julius.
-
"Just some orange drink", most likely.
I guess cuz I never want one of these again.
-
I often stopped at Stan's on my way to work at the Bruin to get an Orange Julius for breakfast. Often it was all the money I had for food that day and I truly appreciated his stand.

Columbia's Steakhouse in Lexington, Ky., opened in the late 1940s and was always the hangout for Wildcats fans before or after games. Since we would never actually go to a game, we were always assured of a good table if we went during the game. Yes, they had steaks, and they were fairly affordable, too, even to a someone on a student's budget. But it was the burger that really shone at this place. It was large and meaty, probably a half pound long before that became popular, and it arrived with a heaping stack of steak fries, which were made even better when drizzled with A-1 on them.
I loved that place and am glad to find out it's still open. My sister still lives in Lexington, but she never mentions it. I wonder if it's still good.
-
I hope former DR Sandra's "wisdom tooth extraction" hasn't made her forget about Cherry Cokes and Underpants!
-
The DD is not feeling well today. Probably something he picked up in a walk and ingested quicker than I could stop him. I'm sure it will pass soon.
I hope he feels better before bedtime.
It started this morning at 2:00am, glad he woke me up to take him out. He's good at that
-
Bruce thank you for sharing your photos from the Kiru. You may not be able to scan an ashtray but you can photograph it ;) They playing cards are cool. I wonder why a very regular customer never too home a pack for his children. I think I usually had a hamburger & fries. I always ordered a Shirley Temple which never failed to arrive with extra cherries.
-
The Kiru had the best cherries anywhere. I used to eat them by the fistful.
-
Back from a turkey sandwich and shall now jog.
-
Yesterday I looked for photos of Wan-Q's & Kowloon for DR MBarnum and couldn't find any of the buildings. I remember the inside of both were very nice.
-

LOL They were good. I had about a fistful every time, not that my fist was very big back then. I think it was because I was my father's daughter unless they were that generous with all their customers.
-
I was very surprised to see the unused payroll check from Pacific Ocean Park.
-
In 1950s and '60s Detroit, my family didn't eat out much, but when we did it was often at Sno-White.
-
And I am finally home. I need to pack a repair kit of tape, scissors, pens, ruler, and music paper tonight to ship to Dublin with the cartons tomorrow. I got hung up waiting for my colleagues to repair that Finale glitch so I could finish binding the full score I'm shipping as well. I haven't eaten sicn around 10 this morning. about 9 hours ago, so I need some dinner.
-
DR Elmore, do you use Finale yourself, or do you have others to do that?
It's not that I have any compelling reason to know it or be good at it, but I've wanted to kind of learn my way around it, anyway, so I took them up on a recent two-day offer to purchase the 2012 edition for $99 -- some serious relief from the $600 sticker price and even the educator price of $350. I've just started looking at a few of the tutorials.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
But I won't.

For years and years, every time I went to Portland Oregon for a visit i had to go to my favorite Chisese Restaurant. Sadly, it is no longer in business.

Annnnd the turntable is finally fixed. Got an old Julio Iglesias album on, I just love it. I picked up 10 albums on clearance, a few Dan Fogelberg's, some random stuff, no cast recordings. I think the t-shirt of the store that repaired the turntable that I purchased cost more than the albums themselves. I just love records.
-
As a small child, our family had one favorite place to go for hamburgers I have posted this photo before, but oh well:

I went to Inselberg once, but the sking was terrible.

I saw a bee stuck in a cobweb at the top of my conservatory this morning. A spider was crawling towards it but I managed to rescue the bee and send it outside.
Was the bee yelling, "Help me!"

DR Ginny I've been planning to make a citrus bundt flower cake for my book group next month. I keep thinking your blueberry pie with the graham cracker crust might be a nice summer treat instead. When you get a chance may I please have the recipe?

Well, no marriage equality ruling from the Supreme Court today.
According to all the blogs tomorrow will be the day. It's the last day of the term and unless they hold it off until next term (which will not happen) it will be tomorrow.
I've heard the same things in my legal blogs, Ben. Tomorrow

NY Times: A TIME TO KILL, play by Rupert Holmes, coming to Broadway

I heard this some time ago. Glad to see it's still on track.

I've discovered I have underlings for that. I have it on my home and office computer, but it's mostly for opening and downloading files, and I rely on my colleagues who are Finale virtuosi for everything.

I once danced under the name Orange Julius. ;)
Hi, all. Been a busy day here. Hope it's been a good one for everyone.

I've never had an Orange Julius at the local Dairy Queen. It's been there since last year, but I just haven't been interested. Diet Pepsi (with free refills ;)) is my drink of choice.

When my family first moved to Lacey in 1976, one of the first burger joints that we went to was called Norm's. It was just a couple of miles from where we lived. There was no indoor seating, just picnic tables and benches and I never saw a man work there. It was only always one older woman and younger girls...not too young, though. Anyway, they had the best burgers ever but they closed in 1985. A few years later, a place called Norma's opened and we wondered if it was any relation to Norm's. My dad asked one time and it turns out that it's not. They just named it Norma's because it reminded people of Norm's. Norma's does have good burgers, but I don't know if they're as good as Norm's. I found THIS (http://visitolympia.com/food/normas-burgers) little article about Norma's and the history of the name.
-
All this talk about burgers makes me want one for dinner. However, NOTHING around here holds a candle to what has been talked about today!

Yeah, but they're now made with yogurt. Blech.

Barbara, take off your pantyhose!

Just found a copy of Diva by Diva, one of the few vocal albums BK produced at Varese-S that I didn't have before. Enjoying Judy Kaye's performance and the song selection.
-
Great memories and great pictures!
If I can become more awake, I will try to recollect some things as well.
I don't think we will live long enough for that.
-
I guess I've been doing a bit of catchup on BK-recommended flicks. Watched the rest of "Hitler's Children" and as uneasy as the movie made me feel, I am fascinated by the idea of people giving themselves the freedom to hate their mother and father -- or grandparents, etc., -- who committed such atrocities as those widespread during the Third Reich. I know there are ancestors on my dad's side of the family who were proudly in the KKKlan and my father was even taught in school how noble those men were defending the South's ideals.
On a happier note, I also watched "The Sessions," which is wonderful in most every way, right down to what amounts to two tiny but meaningful performances from Adam Arkin and Rhea Perlman.
-
Well, I'm off. I came to work early (which is very rare for me), so I get to leave early (which is even MORE rare). ;)
Be back later!
-

Copraphilia, which was once a recurring topic here at HHW.com
I had to look that one up. :P
Is that having sex with under-age girls?
-
Well, I have neither crawled back into bed for a little more sleep, nor gotten my arse moving toward getting anything done today.
Of course it is arbitrary. 3,000 or 30,000. What difference does it make?
-
We did not eat out much when I was a child. The rare times we did we went to Monti's La Casa Vieja, Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips, and some pizza place.

'night!

Very colorful, DR Matthew! :)
-
DR ChasSmith, my DH is one of those Finale "virtuosi" that DR elmoore3003 was talking about. It's a mystery to me. It's kind of like the full version of Photoshop - it can do just about anything, but the learning curve is very steep. I applaud your effort to start!

LOL. I want that t-shirt!

Today my birthday present for Callie and Boo arrived (one B'day June something one July something). I got a discount coupon from Petco with birthday wishes - lol, seriously I did. So I used it and shopped online in their sale furniture and found a good price on a big cat condo platform thing. It was perfect for the basement in front of the sliding glass doors. Callie likes to sit down there on the floor all hunched over looking out the window. She purred and purred when I completed it and has been sitting on the highest perch all night. I may never see her upstairs again, lol
-
Now they have a place to perch on every level of the house. This new one was too big for me to want in the living room

Day two without Edith. It's amazing how much Spanish I can speak when I don't have an interpreter to rely on. I was going to close the office, but I was too busy to do that today. Even when there was a sign on the door, no one paid attention to it. I was working on a brief and trying to focus this afternoon so I locked the front door to the office and went back to my office to work. A client called from the front door to ask me if I knew our front door was locked, lol.
I'm actually very pleased about it. tomorrow the brief is due and no hearings or appointments scheduled, so if necessary, I will lock the door to get it done

A little better tonight. She sipped a little bit of Cherry Coke.

The most famous and most popular drive-in in Tacoma was, is, and probably always will be Frisco Freeze. Newcomers to town can never figure out why these grease-balls have become legend, but they have. I heart me Frisco Freeze.

I've been putting down the piano tracks for a production of Really Rosie that I'm NOT the MD for - if I was around these last few weeks I would be, but I'm not, yet here I am putting down piano tracks for the show because... well, whatever the reason, I'm doing it. And what a delightful score it is!!
