Title: FIREWORKS
Post by: bk on July 04, 2013, 12:08:08 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had fireworks and independence, and now it is time for you to post until the independent cows come home.

From yesterday:

Did a three-mile jog, went to Gelson's and got some melon balls and some diet hot dogs and buns for tomorrow.  Throat is much less scratchy now, but chest feels a bit heavy and I'm clearing my throat too much - will try to stop doing that, but I just know if I can get ten to twelve hours of great sleep that will be the most helpful thing of all.

~~~Continued Recovery and Get Enough Sleep Vibes!!~~~
Good morning, all! I stayed up too late finishing Christopher Gillett's biography/journal of his career as an opera singer, Who's My Bottom?, which I found very honest, moving, and outrageously funny. The sections on performing in Netherlands Opera's productions of a new opera by Tan Dun (TEA) and a Peter Greenaway "western" opera in which he was one of only three in the cast who wasn't nude - although he did have to sodomize the baritone and rape the leading lady inside a horse's carcass  - are both outrageously funny and pathetic about the lunacy currently running operatic staging. I recommend this book highly. If anyone's interested in knwing more about Gillett, here's his website:
http://www.christophergillett.co.uk/
Today, I've got a bit of ROBERTA work, and I may go to a movie, if there's anything I want to see, or I may just drag out the DVD of 1776 and watch that.
DR JohnG, I love the BBC "Shakespeare Retold" and I'm quite fond of that series "Much Ado About Nothing." As I recall, that version is set in a tv station, the dialogue is modernized and the plot adjusted to a contemporary point of view.  It's not the play. I may drag that series out today as well.
So, it's time for more coffee!
My first year in New York, July 4, 1979, I went to the fireworks with the friends who were letting me sleep on their sofa. My memory is that we were in Riverside Park around 80th Street. People were throwing firecrackers among the crowd, it was very hot, it was packed, it was insane. I haven't given a good damn for seeing a fireworks display ever again.
My favorite 4ths were the ones in L.A. enjoyed from above (in a Cessna 172), and a more normal but magical fireworks display in Schaumburg IL enjoyed with a few friends from the area -- magical because I was by then loving my return to the Midwest, and because of the pure perfection of the weather, the locale, the picnic, all that stuff.  It made me think of The Music Man then (though it had no direct resemblance whatever), and the memory of it still brings back those feelings of fleeting summertime perfection.
I saw a beautiful fireworks display in Greencastle in 1984.....and I am hoping our display in Mooresville is good tonight.  We are beginning rehearsals at 6 p.m., so i should be home to see most of the fireworks.  They are shot from the town park which is about a mile from my house.  I can see the bursts over the trees!!!
Independence Day greetings!  Yesterday my DN Laura drove her mom (my sister), Richard, and me to Springfield to visit the Lincoln historic sites.  We toured the home he and Mary lived in before Washington, then we went to the museum, which is kind of like Lincoln Disneyland.  Our final stop was the Lincoln tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery.  On the way home we called my brother-in-law with instructions for baking the lasagna I had assembled at home and brought here frozen.  We stopped at Olive Garden for salad and breadsticks.  Laura had a nice bottle of red wine and it was a lovely dinner with a lot of laughs.
TOD - We're going to three-peat my favorite fireworks experience tonight.  Here in Normal the display is in the park adjacent to Laura's golf course, which is open for spectators.  We'll drive carts out to the 16th green and have a great vantage point.  We did this in 1999 and 2000 and are excited to be here this year.
Happy 4th, everyone!
Love the song, BK, and the pic of Jenna Lea and Barry Lee.   :D
TOD:
My favorite memories of wonderful 4th's were always at home in the 'burbs of Philly. We'd have our traditional delicious family barbecue in the afternoon, and we'd pile the whole family into the station wagon at dusk, and head off to Germantown, where they had the best fireworks show around. The humor of where they were held escaped me until later, but they took place on the grounds of the School for the Deaf.
Everyone brought blankets, which we laid out on a grassy hill. We also brought along more snacks and drinks in coolers, and spent the evening oohing and aaahing over the gorgeous fireworks displays overhead. Sweet days indeed.
I have now watched The Music Man for the first time, and 1776 for the umpteenth time. Their artificial naturalness is somehow far, far more satisfying to me than the attempted "realistic" naturalness of the recent Les Mis.
Since the TOD includes the best fireworks I've ever seen, I have a few favorite visuals of said displays: three photos that I took myself, during my travels.
They are not from a 4th of July celebration, but from the Syndey Olympics in 2000. I was working on the Crystal Harmony, and we were docked right in Sydney Harbor, between the Bridge and the Opera House. I had just bought my first digital camera the day before, and by some miracle, I got these shots without knowing what the hell I was doing with it.
We had the best view in the city from our top deck, and these were the fireworks that marked the end of the closing ceremonies. And though not from today's holiday, these are still some of the most amazing fireworks I have seen to date.
The mop just suddenly stopped working  I called the 800 # got a lovely American  girl on the phone  (on the 4th of July!)  She tried a couple of trouble shooting ideas and then when it still would not work had me read the ID# from the plug - then she said for $1.00(+ state tax of 9 cents) payable by credit card she would email me a postage paid return UPS return label and send out a brand new mop!
I already have the label and the confirmation email for the replacement due to be delivered in 7 - 10 business days!
I was MORE than pleased with the service - I was ready to go out and plop down $100 for a replacement mop
My modem conked out about five times yesterday.  Each time, I would unplug the modem, let it sit for five minutes, and then I would plug it in again and it would be fine.  It used to do this about once a month, so it was no big deal, but now i think the modem is on its last leg.  Does a modem have more than one leg?  I really dread calling Century Link tomorrow, because I know that there Bollywood Service Department is going to put me thru all of their paces trying to prove that they know more about these things than the consumers.
Since the TOD includes the best fireworks I've ever seen, I have a few favorite visuals of said displays: three photos that I took myself, during my travels.
They are not from a 4th of July celebration, but from the Syndey Olympics in 2000. I was working on the Crystal Harmony, and we were docked right in Sydney Harbor, between the Bridge and the Opera House. I had just bought my first digital camera the day before, and by some miracle, I got these shots without knowing what the hell I was doing with it.
We had the best view in the city from our top deck, and these were the fireworks that marked the end of the closing ceremonies. And though not from today's holiday, these are still some of the most amazing fireworks I have seen to date.
She really is - I think I'll keep her!
And she comes with added benefits now- last night the Vixfamily and the Vixboyfriend(!)  went to the Roadhouse for dinner - 30% employee discount on the whole bill ! YEEEEEE HAAAAW!!!
Vixboyfriend?? :o But The Vixter's just a baby! ;)
And great news on the discount!  Love it when that happens.
My modem conked out about five times yesterday.  Each time, I would unplug the modem, let it sit for five minutes, and then I would plug it in again and it would be fine.  It used to do this about once a month, so it was no big deal, but now i think the modem is on its last leg.  Does a modem have more than one leg?  I really dread calling Century Link tomorrow, because I know that there Bollywood Service Department is going to put me thru all of their paces trying to prove that they know more about these things than the consumers.
You can count on that DR TCB. I've gone through their hoops enough times!
I did my ROBERTA work and then I watched the Shakespeare Retold adaptation of "Much Ado About nothing" with Damian Lewis and Sarah Parish as Beatrice and Benedick. I would guess that Joss Whedon has seen this. The advantage this has for a contemporary audience over the original Shalespeare and the new film is that is doesn't stick to the original plot: Hero fights back, doesn't passively allow Claudio to marry her, and goes her own way. I had forgotten much about seeing it, and I enjoyed seeing it again.
TOD:  Probably 1978--my first year in the Washington area.  I went to the Mall for the fireworks.  I did that a few times, but not for many years.
I think it was two years ago, maybe three, I was watching the Concert on the Mall when they had to stop it and send people home because of the threat of lightning.
TOD - We're going to three-peat my favorite fireworks experience tonight.  Here in Normal the display is in the park adjacent to Laura's golf course, which is open for spectators.  We'll drive carts out to the 16th green and have a great vantage point.  We did this in 1999 and 2000 and are excited to be here this year.
I am glad you got to watch TMM, DR SINGDAW....it is a most excellent movie.  I am still trying to "get" 1776, the charms of it have always escaped me.
It could be because William Daniels is on my list of actors who make me cringe.
I also have problems with 1776.  There are a lot of moments that I love, but there are other parts that I would just as soon "fast forward" through.  Actually I like Willaim Daniels in this film and in other projects (St. Elsewhere).  There are just moments that do not work for me in the show.
I loved walking over to Rancho Park and watching the fireworks.  Growing up it was a very short walk and truly spoiled me for having to deal with traffic & parking.
When we lived in Tiburon, California we watched the fireworks over the Golden Gate Bridge from the comfort of our balcony.  WOW! Sadly we were only there for one year.
What I like about this restaurant is that they make a delicious hot chocolate.  They serve it in pretty mugs with, Bruce you would love this, yummy homemade whip cream with chocolate swirleded on top.  Then they put a couple of little straws in the middle of the whip cream.  I just recently discovered this and am bemoaning all the years I've missed out on this treat.
Walking through our small town heading back to our car a woman behind us was talking rather loudly, to what I felt was a 10 year old boy.  As she passed us with a cell phone to her ear we realized she was giving someone directions to someplace close by.
I truly wondered who she was talking to when she said "If you had any friends you would know this".
Same here.  I shut my window that faces where the noise is coming from, but it doesn't help too much. :P
"Independence Day" is on one of the HD channels right now, but I'm not interested in watching it.  I have a video of it somewhere.  I'm going to watch "Annie: It's the Hard Knock Life" from PBS, instead and record it to my DVD burner.
I see that Jackie Evancho is starting to grow into her very unusual voice.  She is very ah mature for 13.
The Broadway cast of MOTOWN apparently doesn't believe in color-blind casting.
TCB just found out my nephew and his girlfriend are totally in to the Titanic.  It was fun to talk with them about it today.  I may send them a couple of my books
I'm watching the "Annie" documentary on PBS and Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin are on it.  That's pretty cool. :)
I think I'll take a shower in a little while, then write notes, schedule them and get to bed - no sleeping too late tomorrow due to hair cut at eleven, which I must leave for by ten-twenty - so no morning jog either - that I'll do in the later afternoon.
Really hoping that tomorrow morning I'm fully better.  I did feel much better today, save for the clearing of the throat.
They seemed to have stopped.  We'll see what happens as it gets closer to midnight.  That seems to be when it all ramps up again.
That is fantastic.  We need a new generation to keep the story alive for the second hundred years.
