It's been horribly hot here. You walk outside and get hit by heat and then a wall of humidity. We stayed in most of the day but we did go out to get some oatmeal and a few other things.

Greetings from Toyland! The AC is on and I am content for the nonce.

Last night I had an endless nightmare involving a theme from 1776 that I could not shake and my running from a lot of attacking zombies. There was a lot of "Night of the Living Dead" in it. And I never dream about zombies. The 1776 theme was nice but annoying.

The Kritzerland shows really do sound like today's equivalent of the album boom, whose passing I mourn.  But at least the existing albums are still out there.  They can't take those away from us, and I still have so many to discover.  I just wish I could see the damned shows.

I often play the Kritzer Book CD's - they are most entertaining.

I liked BERNADINE a lot....but then again I like Pat Boone....who got a pretty bad rap for covering other artists' songs....but his albums were terrific.

His WHITE CHRISTMAS album on Dot Records is one of my favorite holiday LP's.

The notes were very informative again today.  It is funny, but I think I have learned, at least, one microscopic bit of what you, BK, do so well on your albums and your shows.  I bought a CD a few months ago.  When I listened to it, I enjoyed it, but there was just something wrong about the whole thing.  Then I started thinking, "What would BK have done with this collection?"  Then I realized what was wrong.  It was the song order, and the song selection; that didn't work.  It was just one song, a break, another song, and another break.  There was just no flow to the whole CD.  I had no idea how to fix it, of course, but I did know that it was wrong.  So, I thank you, BK, for sharing one small part of your gift with us.

The things one can learn on the Interwebs!

Apparently, there are 3 easy ways to quickly deodorize your stinky shoes:

Quote
According to Lifestyle Lounge, leaving one or two orange peels in the shoe overnight will do the trick. Shoes My Passion recommends sprinkling a little vanilla onto newspaper. Then, crumple it up and let it sit for 24 hours. Lastly, you can fight the heat with cold, by applying a generous amount of baking soda into the soles. Then, place the shoes into a plastic bag and let them sit for a while in the freezer.

TCB - yes, song sequence is very difficult and it is everything.  Get it wrong and people end up not playing the CD again.  Of course with iTunes all that's changed and people now don't even listen in sequence, which I find appalling actually unless the sequence is bad.

This is the major reason I loathe iTunes. Few of my albums remain in order or together even. You have one song floating over here, three there and rest somewhere you can't find.

I went swimming for 2+ hours and then biked for 40 minutes. It was starting to shower when I left on my bike. I was hoping it would continue to just sprinkle rain. IT was good for 35 minutes. Then it started raining a little bit harder. But I bike with my umbrella if it is supposed to rain hard (don't want to get caught in a downpour). So I just drove very slow for the last few minutes and stayed dry.

When you're on that photobucket page there's a list to the right of the photo - choose the one that says IMG.  It will copy itself once you choose it.  Then come here and make a post and copy that code into your post - don't do it via the attachment box, just copy and paste the IMG code right into your post.

DR ChasSmith, I dragged out the 1776 score; the vamp in my dream was the syncopated one that occurs during "Piddle Twiddle and Resolve"  when Abigail sings "Just tell the congress to declare independency."
Title: Re: GETTING IT RIGHT
Post by: ChasSmith on July 07, 2013, 02:06:31 PM
I have dreamed (hmmm, catchy...) some exquisite little musical moments, ranging from symphonies to Broadway scores.  One I'll always remember -- well, not all the details, but the fact of the dream remains -- is having been reminded of, or introduced to, the "lost music" to CAMELOT.  I'd just been given the "special" score that contained all of this discarded or lost music and it was twice as thick as the printed vocal score, and I was opening it up and chomping at the bit to start studying it when, naturally, I woke the f up!  But the song "Before I gaze at you again" was somehow a key to discovering this lost material (whatever that means; it just was), and that played in the dream, and echoed in my head throughout the next day.

I've certainly had single phrases like the "Piddle Twiddle" one take over dreams and stick with me as well.

TCB - yes, song sequence is very difficult and it is everything.  Get it wrong and people end up not playing the CD again.  Of course with iTunes all that's changed and people now don't even listen in sequence, which I find appalling actually unless the sequence is bad.

I've put together my own CD compilations and although I certainly don't have BK's knowledge and experience, I would burn them first on CD-RWs and listen to them and put them in different orders and not burn them to a CD-R until it all flowed and felt right.  I know I learned of the concept from BK and hope that the CDs that I've made for myself are better than me just slapping them all together.  :)

Bruce, I know you put a lot of time and effort into the albums and the shows. My impression is that many cabaret acts are rather thrown together, sometimes by the singer, sometimes by a musical director. Do you--or anyone here--have a sense of how many are actually "engineered"/thoughtfully planned vs those thrown together?

From DR Matthew:
Quote
Saw Johnny Mathis tonight with the San Francisco Symphony.  It was delightful.  He was spot on, the orchestra sounded great and there was a LOT of love in that audience.  So glad I got to see this.

I'm glad to read he is still "spot on".

I wasn't aware he is still performing. How nice for him--and his fans.

Coffee.

I used to LOVE Familia. I'd forgotten all about it.

I forgot about it for nearly four decades, then on a recent cereal eating binge I decided to try it again.  It's very tasty, soaks up a LOT of milk and gets kind of sludgy, but add a couple of things to it and it can be quite enjoyable.

I miss the days of the Unsung, Lost in Boston, Unsung ___, Peter Pan, Cinderella. No one does them any more and I miss what could have been The Sherman Bros (A terrible mix) and the talked about Alice In Wonderland. But I am glad that I have what BK put out there.

It's too bad that they can't be rereleased even it would be on demand or digitally.

I don't often see anyone riding a bike while holding an umbrella. Too bad you can't share a photo of this. :)

It was just for the last 4 or 5 minutes. ANd I was pretty tired anyhow. So I was just biking slowly with one hand holding the umbrella.

Thanks. I don't think that last night's was a migraine. The pain wasn't good. And my sinuses were not feeling good. But I wasn't throwing up or feeling extreme pain. It just wasn't pleasant (and more than a regular headache).

I'm not sure exactly where he was.  There were lots of people out and about but not where he was walking back to his car.  He knew the teens were following him and went in the best direction possible towards a crowd, just not fast enough.

I think the motorcycle incident was near his place as was the mugging awhile back.  He said his neighborhood is nice but just down a bit going in one direction it isn't.  Oops, I hadn't mentioned his bike was intentionally scratched and crap was thrown all over it.  I think he sounded more upset about the bike than his sore jaw.

Well, I just watched the Blu-ray of "The Muppets" with Jason Segel and Amy Adams.  I bought it when it first came out but never watched it until now (typical for me).  It's very good!  The only problem was also something that was really cool.  When I paused the movie to read HHW (or for some other reason), they had an "Intermission" feature come up instead of just pausing.  That was really cool!  And the same thing didn't come up each time I paused it.  The problem is when I wanted to pause the movie to read the end credits, I COULDN'T!  It just went to another "Intermission" feature.  That was annoying, but otherwise, it was a really cool feature.

Elmore, I see your name in the credits for 42nd Street Moon's recording of "Something for the Boys." Can you tell me what work you did on the score?

I believe at the end of that recording there are several numbers from "Leave It To Me"(?) that I wrote vocal arrangements for: A Lady Needs A Rest, Farming. I think.

That was the recording of Leave It to Me. And those are the only two recordings I have from 42nd St. Moon. Would like more, but I think they are out of print.

A Lady Needs A Rest

She certainly does!

One of my favorite Cole Porter songs.

Life is very far from easy
For a lady nowadays.
What with buying stocks at Woolworth's
And shopping at Cartier's.
What with burning up her mattress
With cigarettes she's endorsed.
What with getting her children married.
And getting herself divorced.
What with frocks to fit
And socks to knit
For those Britishers overseas
What with art collections
And hormone injections
And walking her Pekinese.
No wonder now and then
That female specimen
To get it in gear again
Needs a long, long
Rest.

Since I don't drink coffee, and find the Starbucks menu completely baffling, I found this somewhat helpful:

I would like to know what they do with their hot chocolate which I have heard them refer to as mocha.

I drink mochas, but I have never had one made with hot chocolate.  Normally they just add a shot or two of chocolate syrup to the espresso and the milk.

The show went wonderfully, thanks to our amazing cast - sold out crowd and a terrific audience.  So, many kudos to Chelsea Emma Franko, Tessa Grady (her first time with us and so lovely), Barry Pearl (his first time with us and just did a superb job), Jenna Lea Rosen (she's been doing these for a year now, off and on, but tonight was the first time she was a regular doing three songs and she was just stellar in each, but her Where Is Love made me proudest - watching this terrific kid grow better and better with each show is so gratifying), and Robert Yacko (stepping in to replace an ailing cast member at the last minute and delivering a flawless performance).  Guest star Tony Tanner was charming, funny, and a complete delight recreating his Half a Sixpence number, and other guest star Kerry O'Malley brought the house down with the best As Long As He Needs Me I've ever heard.  And the icing on the cake, of course, Shelly Markham at the keyboard, and even singing a song.   Thanks to associate producer Adryan Russ, too.  Next up - the Armenian musicals of the 90s.  Kidding.  Those who were at the show will understand the reference.  Next up really is a show I cannot wait to do - two of my favorite composers ever, Meredith Willson (The Music Man, Molly Brown, Here's Love, etc.) and Gene de Paul (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Li'l Abner, and a slew of classic standards like I'll Remember April and Teach Me Tonight) - if you like by-God melody this is the show for you.  We're already cast and should be able to announce as soon as we lock our guest star down.

Sigh!!!!   I hope Bryan survives living in Cleveland.  This time, on the 4th of all days, he was harassed by a group of teens and one slugged him in the jaw.

Why?  I am so sorry to read that Jane.

I don't often see anyone riding a bike while holding an umbrella. Too bad you can't share a photo of this. :)

It was just for the last 4 or 5 minutes. ANd I was pretty tired anyhow. So I was just biking slowly with one hand holding the umbrella.

LOL!  I wish I could see a photo of that, too.  Good for you.

What a lovely setting, DR Laura. It's nice to know that you have some green around there, too.

Did I miss a picture from Laura?

Terrible news DR JANE!

I saw the nephew of DR KATE and DR KEVIN on NINJA WARRIOR.  He is in the second 15 minutes of the hour show....great story.  And he made a great effort!  It was a story with a great message!!!

The show is repeated at 10 p.m. on G4 or in about 20 minutes from now if you want to watch.....

It's a fun show!  I don't know HOW those competitors get as far as they do!

Thanks, DR Jrand62!   Yes, I think he did a great job.  He was so disappointed at how it turned out but he can compete again next year.

I hope I see him tomorrow night on NBC.  I watched the entire two hour show last week, because I wasn't sure when he would be shown.

Well, I must be off.  I need to take a shower (finally!), get dressed and go out.  I know that I wanted to go to Fred Meyer for something, but I can't remember what.  I'm hoping that just by walking around the store, I'll remember.  Wish me luck.

Be back later!

Well, I made it to Fred Meyer, but didn't get a chance to think about what I originally wanted.  I got in my car and decided that I wanted to go to Red Robin before going to FM (RR closes before FM)...just because.  So I called my friend Margo to see if she wanted to join me and she said that she started a barbecue and I could come over for homemade hamburgers, so I went to FM to get a dessert!  I got a chocolate cake with white frosting and Oreos on the top.  She made hamburgers from organic beef and we just sat on her front porch, eating burgers and dessert and we chatted for more than three hours.  When I left to come home, I totally forgot about going back to Fred Meyer.  Oh, well.  There's always tomorrow. ;D

Good luck, DR George!      :)

Good luck DR GEORGE!  Maybe you need to get cookies.

Thanks, singdaw and Jrand, but I still can't remember what I wanted to get.  Although, I brought home some of the leftover Oreo cake. ;)

Congrats to BK and the latest cast of the Kritzerland show!! :D

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook.  I don't know where she got it, but it's quite appropriate for HHW! ;D

And now, I must go to bed.  I want to get to work early and I should get to bed early to help that happen.

Good night, all. 8)
