Well, you've read the notes, the notes allowed traffic and had all kinds of visual and aural aids, and now it it time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently playing in traffic.
-
And the word of the day is: PHALANX!
-
BK, did you (or anyone else) know that the DVD of The Ghastly Love of Johnny X (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BR1ZFC4/) is now available for purchase?

-
It was just released last month on June 18, 2013, according to the Amazon.com listing.
-
Loved all the multimedia "extras" in today's notes.

I hope you've all taken your insulin this morning. :)

Vincent Van Patten (before he turned tennis pro, i assume?) AND Kristy McNichol (before she played Buddy in Follies, I mean, in Family) playing the kids? I hadn't remembered Kristy McNichol on that

For utter hard-core Apple's Way sweetness that actually suggests starving the dog so it will be so hungry it will do a trick for food, there's this from Apple's Way too

"Mack the Knife" must have been written decades earlier, but charted during this period

I guess the butter-churning thing didn't pan out as a career! :)

Good morning, all.
Coffee!

Good morning, all!
I have little to report: I finished by mystery Death at the Beggar's Opera and I've ordered several more books in the series. So, I'm currently between travel literature. It's back to Jane Austen for the nonce.
I am off to Toyland. I'd like to finish up the final two movements of the Moross Ballet Ballad, and I may take the ROBERTA vocal score down to Kinko's and have a few more printed up.
DR JohnG, I got your email. I know that often in manuscript plays and vocal scores, you'll find info like "vamp until Gwen/John exits," where the actor's name is used rather than the name of the character he or she is playing. As to the Kimball Porter lyrics, Bob's a wonderful man, but errors do happen in publishing; he missed the original "Nymph Errand" finish of "The Physician" and, as a consequence, the lyrics about cruising soldiers in the park after dark is what is known as the song's conclusion; in the Hart book, he assigns one of the DEAREST ENEMY lyrics to the wrong character. He most likely didn't missed some sources for SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS, or the editor sent the incorrect materials to the printer. Who's to know?
Every time I have to submit copy, I worry about this. Once it's in print, it suddenly becomes truth, and sometimes it's an error.
-
Love the newspaper clippings!
It's astounding to think that BK, of all people, can still discover a heretofore forgotten/unknown piece of his personal history like that one. Simply remarkable.
-
It's Tuesday-- I know that much.
-
Good morning, all.
Thanks, Elmore, for the notes. One thing I found interesting when I went to the Complete Lyrics of Cole Porter that was different from the three or so recordings I have of the song was in "By the Mississiniwah." The book has a patter section, but I've never heard it -- and thing it's a superfluous as the patter section Porter wrote for "From This Moment On."
Anyway, Tuesday vibes for all.
-
TOD:
Probably too many to mention. I love early Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash -- the guys that came through Sam Phillips' Sun Studios. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly -- you name it.
A few favorite songs, and I don't know if all of them fit the definition of rock 'n' roll:
Sing, Sing, Sing
Twilight Time
Mack the Knife
Great Balls of Fire
Peggy Sue
Let's Twist Again
Ooby Dooby
Cool Jerk
Only You

The patter came from a manuscript copy of the song. It most likely got cut in rehearsal or possibly when Ethel Merman demanded that Paula Lawrence be fired.
In JUBILEE, there is a section for "Why Shouldn't I?" that exists in the song manuscript as well as the copyright libretto. By the time the show opened, the section was cut to reduce the song's length.

Tuesday morning greetings! Today I have to visit the

Good Morning All:
TOD:

Hey Jude, The Beatles, 1968
A Whiter Shade of Pale, Procul Harum, 1967
Yesterday, The Beatles, 1968
Unchained Melody, The Richteous Brothers, 1965
These Boots Are Made For Walking, Nancy and Frank Sinatra, 1966
Michelle, The Beatles, 1968

I, too, watched the Blu Ray of "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing" last night. It's as good as BK said. However, and I don't like to carp about favorite things, the commentary track was a tad nervewracking. We had Mike Lonzo talking about the cinematography and Jon Burlingame talking about the music. But towering above them both was Sylvia Stoddard going on and on and on about the time and place and culture clash, etc. I knew most all of that from reading (which a lot of folks simply don't do any more), but it was all loosey-goosey and she never takes a breath. Her commentary was about 90% of the total commentary and it simply got on my last nerve. Lonzo and Burlingame seemingly could only get a few words in edgewise, but I enjoyed what they had to say. A separate commentary with Stoddard would have been a nice move had they thought about it (or could afford it).
-
As if that wasn't enough Blu Ray watching, I then tackled one of my favorites: "Sleepless in Seattle". It's absolutely lovely and wonderful and the entire soundtrack is isolated and there are some wonderful songs scattered throughout. At the end, there is the heart-in-your-throat "Empire State Building Montage" written by Hugo W. Friedhofer for "An Affair to Remember" in 1957. This wonderful music accompanied Meg Ryan's mad dash from a taxi to the Empire State Building where, she hoped, she might meet this "Sam Baldwin" who was "Sleepless in Seattle" one Christmas Eve on a radio talk show. It's a blubber-fest for me. Loved it. Watched that final sequence several times.
Then it was time for bed. And my dream: I met my brother (I'm actually an only child) for the first time...and he's a time traveler. Put that in your Dream-O-Matic 6000, Jack, and tell me what it means, please.
-
Thanks for the photo link, DR Laura. They are all lovely! :)

Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates a wish to bring a talent or command that you enjoyed earlier in your life into play in your life today, thinking it will bring better results than what you are doing now.

Here is my pet peeve o' the day:
The infernal pressing plants that stick those seals on new CD cases - the kind that identify the album title and/or artist along the edge of the case, which no longer matters because CDs aren't sold in brick and mortar stores anymore. Actually, it's not the seal that bothers me all that much, but the companies that use an adhesive that doesn't come off. It makes it well nigh impossible to remove the seal to begin with, and even if you do, it leaves a sticky residue on the case that never does come off, and sticks to everything around it. Grrrrr! :P
-
G4 where American Ninja broadcasts on Sunday night, usually reruns the previous week's episode just before the current one.
So it should be on again this Sunday at 9 p.m. EST.
-
Well I am on Chapter Five in BK's Book," There's Mel, There's Woody, and There's You".
I am finding myself laughing out loud several times so far.
I too, BK, have very sensitive skin and can totally relate when you were getting your TV makeup on.
That's one of the reasons why I didn't pursue acting. I was afraid that the makeup would irritate my skin.
-
I am breezing thru this very entertaining book.
-
More Jew Jokes, please.
Interesting newspaper articles and photos!!!

It's great to get a Inside View of the Entertainment World from someone who actually lived it!

I think it is great that you have had the Same "Hair Stylist" for forty years.!

DR BK, What is Cindy Williams really like, and do you still keep in Contact with her?
I thought she was fabulous in Laverne And Shirley!

Regarding yesterday's discussion of dressing up...part of my outlook probably has to do with Oregon, particularly Portland, and the way people here "dress-up"...for men, anyhow, it tends to be dressy-casual. Meaning, khakis can substitute for slacks, and polo shirts can substitute for dress/sport shirts. And jackets go with anything. Nice khaki shorts with sandals are common men's wear at matinees during the summer, though maybe not so much for an evening performance.
These are just my observations, mind you, of what I see when attending the few ballets, Broadway shows, and other theatrical events in Salem/Portland. I imagine Ashland is much the same.
The rest of the state's populous, however, only attend rodeos and tractor pulls, so their way of dressing may vary.
-
TOD:
I am still thinking on this...most of the rock and roll songs I am coming up with as favorites are post-1960.
And most of what I am coming up with from 1954 to 1960 are more pop, than rock and roll. Or maybe that doesn't matter.
-
Thanks DR SINGDAW I don't know how to cut and paste like that!

What a weird morning. I was up at 8:45, got back into bed, was up at ten and fell asleep again and just had a telephonic call at eleven. So, now I'm up and the morning is gone.

I'd read that you can just use the oil that separates out from "natural" peanut butter...but who wants to wait 24 hours?

Watched the rapidly viral music video for the 'gay' country song by aspiring country singer Steve Grand.
I am not a big fan of current day country music (I love oldies country, though), but it was a nice enough song. Heartbreaking in the way that all of those country songs about unrequited love are.
I hope this singer does well. His songs are gonna be a big hit with the gay country/western fans in Oregon...of which there are quite a lot of.

Back from a BLT-A - saw Kat Kramer (daughter of Stanley) and chatted - and confirmed for sure that Criterion has indeed been working on It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World for a supposed November release. Whether they make that date or not is unknown, but that's the anniversary of the film and it's also Stanley's 100th.

The director of Johnny X sent me a DVD in the mail - haven't watched it yet.

Laura, I saw five of these in various sizes on the parsley plant, which isn't thriving in the heat. But I also planted the Mexican love plant this year to attract more butterflies.
-
I gotta tell you.

But I won't.

Beautiful, John! Black swallowtail caterpillars! Thank you for leaving some parsley for them.
My parsley is shot. But when I get caterpillars, they seem to favor the fennel over the parsley.

I don't know the Mexican love plant.

That would be so cool! I wonder which cut of the film they'll use...or if they'll have different versions like the theatrical and a director's cut.
-
That is, of course, EXCELLENT news about MAD WORLD!
-
And while I normally don't care about movie anniversaries, that's a 50th and a 100th, all wrapped up in one package -- and how are you gonna beat that?
-
Get me off this damn page. I'm quite ready for this day to be done - very peculiar and I'm very bored of peculiar right now.

Hi, everyone,
Hope you're all having lovely days. I'm sneaking in between biz and a first rehearsal for a staged reading of a new play, about J. Bruce Ismay, the man who was blamed for the Titanic's mess. You know... because we can't get enough of that distaster. :D
BK, I was not in tarnation, just busy. By the by, Jenna sounds spectacular in that video. We never get to hear the actual performance from backstage so clearly. Just gorgeous. What a talent!

Hello Everyone:

I'll watch American Ninja Warrior again tonight at 8:00 and 10:00 Pm to see My Nephew Patrick again.
In between of course I will be reading BK's Book. I love it !!

Well my hubby (Jerry) and I finally decided on the paint for our kitchen. It is Benjamin Moore, Segovia Red. It is a beautifull brownish red. Very elegant and stylish looking.
It is very expensive, in an eggshell finish. But it is worth it to buy the best paint. It wears so well.
I can't wait to get it done.
-
Then we will paint our entrance door (maybe the same color) and the base of the kitchen bar counter.
-
DR BK who were your favorite actors to work with?

Also BK, did you ever have to cry on cue, and if so how did you do it?

Hello Brother Kevin, I talked to Brother Rick today.

DR Kevin, Did you ever hear from Patrick after you left message??

I've had some Chinese food for dinner and I'm going to settle in, watch some RIZZOLI & ISLES, read a little Jane Austen and go to bed.
Tomorrow, I'll go to Toyland in the morning and at 1:00pm, I'm seeing a friend in a matinee of a NYMF show.
-
That's all my news.

It makes it well nigh impossible to remove the seal to begin with, and even if you do, it leaves a sticky residue on the case that never does come off, and sticks to everything around it. Grrrrr! :P
"Goo Gone" will take it right off. Of course, there is an argument about it not being environmentally friendly, but it works.
Peanut butter works, too. Just smear it on and leave for about 24 hours, then wash & rinse.
I thought that for gum in the hair ;)
I've also used regular oil to remove that sticky stuff. I find goo gone & de-solv easier & better but they don't smell too great. I also prefer the spray bottles.

We used to get rather dressed up for the theater when we first moved it and found we were the exception. The outdoor theater might be a bit more casual but I have seen plenty of shorts inside as well. We have a lot of school students bused in and they don't get too dressed.

My mother often talked about her Uncle Smith who was much loved by his family. Genealogy research, to my brother's relief not mine, showed him to be related by marriage.

Good quality pain is well worth the extra money in the long run. I hope you are very happy with it.

Kate is redecorating - I suppose that can qualify as masochistic behavior.....

the Vixfamily is going on vacation in a couple of weeks heading for Florida -- because, really, where else would you want to be in July?

Just two more little busy work things for this particular busy work project, then I can do the other busy work project, which involves two more little things, over the weekend.

LOL I knew I must have made a typo. Pain is never good in the long run unless it warns you of something treatable before it kills you :)

Bruce it is mind boggling you weren't aware of the Tarzana restaurant or these adds. The things our parent's didn't talk about back then.

It works very well for getting gunk goo off CD cases. :)

Today I was thinking about yesterday's TOD. What I was thinking was, I'd rather sit next to someone in clean jeans and shirt than someone in a suit that hasn't laundered it in a long time. I've had that happen. Looked fine, but smelled PU

Well, it's been a day and now it must continue away from work. I have a Theater Artists Board meeting at 7:30, and I must attend. I think that we'll have a quorum. Hopefully, we'll have a quorum. I think we have some things to talk about and decisions to make. We'll see if enough people show up.
Be back later!

Love that list, Shogun. I think I would rather read "A Heartbreaking Wok of Staggering Genius" than ever contemplate the original "Work" again. Oy, did I hate that book with a passion.

Went out to eat with friends. It turned into drinks afterward. And I think I need sleep. But some Cole Porter first.

TCB and any who's interested: I believe the episode of American Ninja Warriors with my nephew will be on tonight at 8 pm and 10 pm and repeated later in the week. Not sure if it's for Pacific time as well as Eastern:

Well, we had a quorum, so we were able to make some decisions. The most important was that we were supposed to have elections, but couldn't get everyone together in one place at one time. We had three positions with vacancies and fortunately, had three people to "run" for them. We essentially just made a motion to vote them in and we now have a full board again.

A friend posted this on Facebook and I can't believe that this is real...New Indiana Law Makes It A Felony For Same-Sex Couples To Apply For A Marriage License (http://thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/indiana-law-makes-it-a-felony-for-same-sex-couples-to-apply-for-a-marriage-license/legislation/2013/07/08/70698).
Indiana lawmakers have revamped a 1997 law that makes furnishing false information on a marriage license a class D felony. Beginning July 1, 2014, a same-sex couple applying for a marriage license in the state of Indiana will be guilty of a Level 6 felony, punishable by 18 months in prison and a $10,000 fine. The new law also makes it a Class B Misdemeanor for a clergyman, judge, mayor, city clerk or town clerk-treasurer to perform a same-sex marriage, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. Any clerk who issues a license to a same-sex couple would also be guilty of a Class B Misdemeanor.
Because Indiana marriage license forms have a space for “male applicant” and “female applicant”, any same-sex couple filling out the form would automatically violate the law. The harsh penalties Indiana lawmakers have approved make it difficult for protest movements like the Campaign for Southern Equality’s “We Do” Campaign, which encourages same-sex couples to apply for marriage licenses as a protest in states that prohibit same-sex marriages.
While many other states are reevaluating their laws concerning marriage equality in the light of the Supreme Court decision that struck down a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act, Indiana lawmakers are considering doubling down on their anti-equality posture. Although same-sex marriages are currently banned by state law, the Republican controlled General Assembly is considering submitting an amendment to the state constitution for a vote of the people next year. The decision will be made in the January-March 2014 legislative session. It is unclear whether such an amendment would survive a popular vote, as recent polling finds a majority of Indiana residents are now against a constitutional amendment forbidding marriage equality.
WTF??

Is You Tube just done? I use Safari - forever. I use Chrome - forever - nothing loads properly. It's just AWFUL.

I was trying to find that clip from my song Three Friends, written for the musical Yearbook back in the late 80s or whenever it was. First off, I'd gotten the script of the show - as some may remember, I had no memory of that song until I came upon the clip and I thought - that sounds like something I'd have written - I only remembered the other song I did for it - Nerd. So, I got the script and was really kind of shocked at the lyric - it's very good, but very dark in its storytelling until you get to the hook about how these three gal friends help each other through. Only the hook part was on that You Tube video I'd found - but tonight I went to the publisher site again and they had a sample of the song so I heard one of the three dark sections - really interesting to hear after all these years. Then I noticed they sell a cast CD so I bought that. Then I searched for the video and didn't find the one I'd seen but found a short one of the song sung by another cast - and just the one solo that's actually on the publisher site's clip. I wrote the girl who posted it and asked if she had the full clip. But getting the damn thing to load - just impossible - it's less than a damn minute long. How does anyone watch anything on You Tube anymore - I just don't get it. When I get the CD, I'll post the song.

And I had the same problem with the video taking a long time to load. I think something else is going on. I use Firefox and this is really one of the very few times that there's been a loading problem. :-\
