Well, you've read the notes, the notes had their second wind, and now it is time for you to post until the windy cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: TOURBILLION!
-
Love the whole cast recording to "Bus and Truck"! BK, did you know that it's listed on castalbums.org (http://castalbums.org/recordings/Bus-and-Truck-2004-Studio-Cast/15304)? :)
-

-
i have somewhere a video of BK reading from the book at the Drama Book Shop and singers do the songs from the show.
-
Must go catch up. Looks like I fell asleep early last night and missed some good stuff.
-
DR Laura - wow, you saw so many great critters yesterday in the great outdoors!
(I feel like Ilona Ritter - The library; so many books! :) )
-
Really enjoyed "Who Do I Have To..." and look forward to hearing the other numbers from Bus and Truck.
-
I have read 11/22/63 and liked it. It is loooong.
-
I guess there were no copies of the Cuckoo book at the Book Fair. Thanks for your report, bk!
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning, all.
Could use another hour of sleep, but I guess that isn't in the cards. Got to get moving, grab something at Denny's, check out of the motel, watch some movies, then head home this evening.
-
Great to hear the song, and I look forward to reading the book sometime soon.
-
Mr. Moore, hope your trip to Dublin is free of stress and worry! Have a drink and go to sleep and when you wake up you'll be in Lovely Dublin (yay!).
Good luck w/the recording and everything surrounding it.
-
It is Sunday, although I've yet to experience much of it. Maybe after the sun finishes coming up.
-
Good morning, all.
Travel vibes for Elmore.
-
Good morning, all! Thank you for the good travel wishes, and please keep them coming my way! My flight is at 9:00 tonight, and I'll call a car service around 5:00 to take me to JFK.
I sit here surrounded by everything I'm taking with me, and I will shortly begin packing. Once that's finished, I will head for the bank. Then, I'll begin my neurotic closing up the apartment for two weeks: unplug things, set the VCR for the last two episodes of MAJOR CRIMES and RIZZOLI & ISLES.
More coffee!
-
Good morning!
-
Travel vibes for DR elmore!
Have a great time in Dublin! Say hi to Kim for me!
-
Sorry to hear about Eydie Gorme--one of my favorite singers. I love this clip from the Tonight Show:

Preparation and travel vibes for DR ELMORE....hopefully someone will take LOTS of photos!

I never saw Eydie or Steve & Eydie LIVE.....but I saw them many times on television. She certainly could sing!
BUT her fake acrylic hair and especially her VERY FAKE breaking up laughing schtick was very annoying to me....

Since BK talks about NIAGARA and actor Casey Adams in his blog today, I thought I would take the opportunity to post this brief excerpt from my forthcoming (late October/early November) 2nd memoir, LIFE, LIBERTY & THE PURSUIT OF HOLLYWOOD: More of My Wacky Adventures in Tinseltown.
I stepped into an elevator one day, and immediately recognized the
only other occupant. He was an actor, Casey Adams, who had played
secondary, albeit key, roles in many movies of the 1950s. Perhaps he is
best remembered as Jean Peters’ husband in the classic Marilyn Monroe
thriller, Niagara.
In the early 1960s, Adams reverted to using his real name, Max
Showalter, professionally, and since I had his undivided attention in that
elevator, I decided to ask him why he would drop “Casey Adams” since he
was so well established in the business under that name.
“I hated that name,” he said with a guffaw. “I was under contract to
Fox, and they chose it. So, when I went freelance, I went back to my own
name because I’m ‘Max Showalter,’ not ‘Casey Adams’.”
“Didn’t that hurt your career?” I wanted to know.
“Not at all,” he said. “Casey Adams was never a star, and producers
and casting people knew what I could do.”
As Max Showalter, the former Casey Adams played the stage role of
“Horace Vandergelder” in Hello, Dolly! more than 3,000 times opposite
such ladies as Carol Channing, Betty Grable, Ginger Rogers, and Betsy
Palmer, and also did television and films, most notably playing “Grandpa
Fred” in Sixteen Candles (1984).
Barbara Hershey, who was a publicity client for a few months about
the time her breakout movie, Last Summer (1969), was released, also
changed her professional name for a short while to “Barbara Seagull,” but
that didn’t work for her. Unlike Showalter, Barbara was a star and, aside
from her magnificent acting abilities, producers who hired her were also
paying for a star’s name to advertise on their marquees.
“Barbara Seagull” was a virtual unknown; therefore I can only assume
that the reappearance of “Barbara Hershey” was a practical decision
on her part.

I'm up - I think I got over eight hours of blessed sleep.

Interesting story DR DRUXY....

SLOW DAY ON HHW
-
Nice photos yesterday from DR LAURA and DR VIXMOM

Page Two?
-
Yes. I am most intrigued to hear what the new release is tomorrow morning.

Not only were there no copies of The Cuckoo's Calling at the fair, most dealers had no clew as to what had happened with the book. Dealers are funny about new books going rare like that - they don't trust it, as several frenzies have had their bubbles burst eventually, but in the end if there really were only 1500 copies then this thing is not going to go down. That said, the publisher itself had never owned up to how many copies were printed. The "1500" is pure speculation by dealers trying to sell and they take that number from the publisher's statement about how many copies had been sold. Copies sold, of course, has nothing to do with copies printed. I suspect if it sold under 1500, which it did, that the print run would be closer to 5000 - but maybe it was less than that. No one knows. Except the publisher. And the publisher has not been forthcoming.
-
DR Laura I would like to have seen Steve & Eydie in person.

And how many times did you fly around the world to hear Eydie sing?
-
I am packed and ready to go, with two hours to kill before the car shows up.
-
That time couldn't be any better spent than frenzying here at HHW! :)
-
You have always reminded me of Ilona in a kind of space time continuum.
;D I take that as quite a compliment, DR TCB!

Hello Everyone:
DR Bk , how great to have a copy of Member of The Wedding. I never read the book, but loved the movie!
-
Niagara is one of my favorite movies. I really thought Marilyn was great in it. She was so beautiful.
Years ago I read a book about her. It seems she was very misunderstood.
Around 10 years ago my girlfriends and I stayed at the hotel where Marilyn stayed while filming Niagara. It was a lovely old Hotel. I can't think of the name of it. It is actually connected to the Niagara Falls Casino via a walkway.
-
In the movie Niagara, a couple arrives due to the husband winning a contest through his employer.
The name of the Company is never revealed. It is implied that it is General Mills in Buffalo, NY.
General Mills is still there. In fact I worked there for a few weeks as a temp many years ago.
-
Back from visit two to the book fair, which was basically just to give my friend Craig my new book, as a character at the beginning is based on him. Chatted for a while and now I'm home and getting ready to go to the Hills of Beverly to see a musical show.
-
Travel vibes for DR Elmore.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Last Sunday I said how much I enjoyed Jacques Demy's UNE CHABRE EN VILLE on the French TV channel. Today they showed LES DEMOISELLES DE ROCHEFORT and I had completely the opposite reaction. I'd had enough of it after about 10 minutes. Totally misconceived - IMO of course!
-
Good morning, all! Thank you for the good travel wishes, and please keep them coming my way! My flight is at 9:00 tonight, and I'll call a car service around 5:00 to take me to JFK.
Wishing you a good and safe journey DR Elmore3003.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! Hope I'm here in time to add my mega travel vibes for DR Elmore!
-
getting ready to go to the Hills of Beverly to see a musical show.
A musical show. With music.
-
Sorry to have been E & T for a couple of days. Yesterday morning I was up early and on the road at 7am with 3 AAUW friends. We went to Otterbein University in Westerville, OH, for a state-wide leadership conference. This morning I was up early and on the road at 7am with Richard. We went to Lima for church.
I am glad to be home.
-
Thank you, one and all, for the vibes and good wishes! I'm a bit petrified with lugging two bags and a cane through the terminal to my destination.
30 minutes ago,I discovered that I have misplaced one of my luggage locks so I walked to Duane Reade Drugs to buy another. It was difficult, so I've taken some more Tylenol and flexeril. My luggage is now locked and ready t go. I'll call for a car in 45 minutes. By then the drugs should hopefully kick in.
-
Hello, everyone.
AND MORE MEGA TRAVEL AND HEALTH VIBES TO LARRY!!
I know it's difficult to move around much on a plane, but even small stretches and movements can be helpful.
-
Bruce, I really enjoyed WHO DO I HAVE TO BLANK TO GET OUT OF THIS SHOW. Really first-rate. And you make good use out of one of your favorite curse words. ;)
-
Bon voyage, Larry!
-
I have no sense of print runs for new authors. Is 5000 the norm? BK? Anyone?
-
Sorry to hear about Eydie Gorme--one of my favorite singers. I love this clip from the Tonight Show:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNpb8WsF6bc
And how many times did you fly around the world to hear Eydie sing?
Well, I did take a bus from Buffalo to Toronto in approximately 1977 to see Steve and Eydie. And I saw them at Carnegie Hall many years ago. That's about it!
-
I, too, always liked Steve and Eydie. So many wonderful singers in the 1960s.

Yes! I had no idea that I'd ever see Barbra live!
-
Just talked to my friend in England on Face Time. What a great thing! And it's free (well, after you pay for your internet connection)!

And I am off to JFK! I'll be back when I get to Dublin.

IRISH TRAVEL VIBES for DR ELMORE!!!
-
Elmore, wave when you fly over Arizona!
(A DR Ginny reference)
-
My Steve and Eydie story: One dark and stormy evening, DR Kerry called and asked if I was busy and could I get downtown right away (in a pouring rainstorm). He had bought two tickets for Steve and Eydie as a gift for his aunt. She refused to go out in the storm. I was out of the house in seconds! Awesome seats, too -- just a couple rows from the stage.

I love it, Laura. I hope Elmore's plane to Dublin doesn't make by way of Arizona! ;D

That is faster than I could have gotten out of the house, well done. That was very kind of DR Kerry and his aunt.
I had a little more warning than that the night my mother was sick & I had the pleasure of going with my father to Heifetz's last performance before he retired. I was able to eat and change my clothes while my father drove from WLA to the valley to pick me up.
-
Two types of vegetarian lasagna in the oven. Both use thin strips of zucchini in place of the pasta I can't eat. One has homemade pesto, mushrooms, onions and garlic with plenty of Parmesan on top. The other has tomato sauce, onions and red bell pepper with Parmesan. They smell good. Hope they taste as good.
-
DR John G, both lasagna varieties sound yummy. I've always wanted to try making something like that.

Make it up as you go along. It's easier that way.
Oh, and add bacon when necessary.

They are on sale here at Shopko but I think it's a second printing

It's the last day of my vacation. Very glad I got so much done outside. I can always work in the house so I'm ok that I didn't get the inside jobs done.
-
Seniors on ATVs. That was the top story on the local news
-
And........ ;)
-
The seniors are patrolling the walking paths on ATVs. DR Jane, maybe they would take you for a ride! ;)
-
DR Cillaliz, I'm glad you've had a good stay-cation!
-
Thanks Ginny. I did. Can't believe it's back to work tomorrow
-
The new air conditioner is working very well....just a few more things to do to get the furnace operating....but we do not expect a cold snap tonight.
-
Print runs for new authors, if the publisher thinks it won't be a runaway best seller, would probably be in the 2500 range these days.
-
DR John G. - sounds really, really yummy!
-
I had the pleasure of going with my father to Heifetz's last performance before he retired.
WOW!!
-
The helper was very good in her show - she stepped into the lead role six days before opening. The show itself is an utter waste or time, a complete borefest called Tanglin' Hearts, a country western As You Like It. Bad songs, horrible script.
-
So did any DRs win the Powerball drawing?
-
Tanglin' Hearts, a country western As You Like It.
Since DR elmore3003 is otherwise indisposed, I'll say it: Oy! :)
-
FOUR!
-
The seniors are patrolling the walking paths on ATVs. DR Jane, maybe they would take you for a ride! ;)
;D That sounds about the right speed for me.
Are they patrolling to keep them safe?
-
I am trying to spend less time on the computer and more time in motion which is why I've been on the couch reading.
-
I did not win the Powerball and lost my entire $5 investment in a scratch off ticket as well.
-

Thank you, Bruce.
-

WOW!!
Ditto. I would have loved to have been there. I did see Segovia in person many moons ago. That was very nice.
-
So did any DRs win the Powerball drawing?
Exactly what I was wondering.
-
I am trying to spend less time on the computer and more time in motion which is why I've been on the couch reading.
I need to spend less time on the computer. See how well I'm doing?
-
I imagine Larry's in the air by now.
-
Hum, I'm craving some chocolate.
TTFN.
-
I had the pleasure of going with my father to Heifetz's last performance before he retired.
WOW!!
WOW is an understatement. Plus it is a very sweet memory with my father.

Better than I am. :)
I will be serious about it the rest of the week. I have much to do around here.

So, here was the shot from my friend's backyard as we were having Bible study tonight.
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1151051_10200134237149590_806281294_n.jpg)
-
For a time there, all I wanted to do was to watch the birdy. I could get out the backdoor, but I couldn't get within 40 feet to get better photo.
-
I had the pleasure of going with my father to Heifetz's last performance before he retired.
WOW!!
Yes, big wow! I was fortunate enough to have been in the audience at Tanglewood for Bernstein's last concert. Judy Kaye sang Arias and Barcarolles, but Bernstein was too tired to conduct it. He did lead a masterful Beethoven's Seventh as well as Britten's Seascapes. Glad there's a recording of that day.
-
The seniors are patrolling the walking paths on ATVs. DR Jane, maybe they would take you for a ride! ;)
;D That sounds about the right speed for me.
Are they patrolling to keep them safe?
Yes, they are working with the police. Not sure what they would do if they actually happened on something, but their presence is a good thing

We have them all over town. Sometimes you have to stop to let them cross the road.....even if they don't tell you why.
-
Cool, Cillaliz. Hadn't seen one in town before. Next door was a cat who sat transfixed by the turkey. He wasn't going anywhere near that, but he wanted to.
-
Good night, all.
-
DR Laura I would like to have seen Steve & Eydie in person.
I saw them in Las Vegas in '74 or '75. I always thought Steve Lawrence was one of the most handsome singers of his day.
-
Good evening, one and all.
Back! Three-and-a-half hours straight through, no stops for Man nor Car.
-
Thank you for the story, DR Druxy!
-
Page 4?

I guess we could blame this on elmore because he is winging across the pond.

Instead of posting like he should be doing.

DR Jane: When and where was the Heifetz concert?
Inquiring minds must know! If the one I'm thinking of was, in fact, his last public appearance, then guess who else was in that audience!
It might not be the same event, but I remember being under the impression that it had been his first appearance in a while, and that it turned out to be his last -- the last "big" one, at any rate.
-
Had a great weekend being introduced to a whole roster of movies I had never seen, from the silent era into the 1930s. Some crazy stuff, to be sure, but also some wonderful stuff. And the theater is incredible. I'll go back next year if I can spare the weekend again.
Met a lot of -- not just film "buffs", but real die-hard collectors. I've always wished I'd gotten the film collecting bug way back in the day. Second best, though, could be just knowing those who did, and who have tons of great stuff to share.
-
I am watching the PBS Girl Group Pledgedriver. I am listening to Leslie Gore singing "You Don't Own Me" and I'm thinking, "Oh yeah, I had that 45." But Wait! I had the 45 of that song, but mine was sung by Patty Duke! WTF?
-
One more.

In other news, I lost my cell phone today! (My best guess is that I set it down on a table out in public, and moved on...) It was a very fine Android smartphone, and I went through a couple of insane hours fretting over who was getting into my SHIT, changing several passwords, etc.
Long story short--
Oh hell, it's not even worth a short story.
Suffice it to say that at least I have insurance on this one, and will be utilizing it tomorrow.

SAFE AND EASY TRAVEL VIBES DR ELMORE!
DR ELMORE VIBES FOR A SUCCESSFUL TRIP!!!!!
~~~DITTO AND DITTO!!~~~
-
The craziest thing was driving a 3-1/2-hour car trip ... WITHOUT A PHONE.
I actually very rarely TALK on the damned thing, but I use it for plenty else, and just knowing it's there in sudden need, or whatever, is a whole different world from the one we all grew up in. So, I felt mighty "disconnected", as it were.
Out of touch. Incommunicado. Vulnerable.
You get the drift.
Very glad to be home.
-
May I just say that page five will NOT do.
-
Back from the birthday party - I stayed about an hour.
-
I hadn't eaten anything and I didn't want to eat any of the party food, so after I went and had a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and no fries or onion rings. No jog today, but I definitely ate no more than my 1200 calories so it's fine.
Yikes!! I've never actually lost my phone. I've left it at home or at work but FORTUNATELY it's never gotten lost. I don't have a smart phone, but I would hate to lose the phone that I do have.
Well this is pretty darned cool...NH lifetime achievement award for Stephen Sondheim (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-entertainment/20130811/US-People-Sondheim/)!
PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (AP) — Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is being awarded one of the top honors in the arts world: the Edward MacDowell Medal for lifetime achievement.
The award is being presented Sunday at the MacDowell Colony, the prestigious retreat for artists, writers and composers in Peterborough, N.H. This is the first time the medal has been awarded for achievement in musical theater. Past recipients include Robert Frost and Georgia O'Keefe.
In a statement when the award was announced, Sondheim called the medal a "sort of homecoming," noting that as a child he used to play compositions by Edward MacDowell, for whom the prize is named.
Sondheim has won more Tony Awards than any other composer. His hit musicals include "Follies," ''A Little Night Music" and "Sweeney Todd."
-
I'm tired.
-
But not tired enough to stay on page five.
-
But I can't do it alone, said the spider to the fly. Do you ever wonder what the damn fly said in response? I do. It keeps me up nights.
-
Today, I stayed home for a while and worked on memorizing my lines for "Hollywood Who Done It?". Tomorrow is the first rehearsal where we have to be off book. ::) I have most of them down, but at rehearsal tomorrow, who knows how much will stick.
-
This afternoon, I went to my sister's. She had made some chocolate cupcake. It was quite delish!
-
I stayed for a while and chatted, then I went to Red Robin for a burger. That was very good but messy. :)
-
Burger sounds good.
-
Sounds good a burger.
-
"Mr. Roberts" is on TCM right now. It's almost over. I love this movie. :D
-
It would be faboo to have a Blu and Ray of Mr. Roberts. I wonder if a revival would be fun. Have they done one EVER?
-
According to Internet Broadway Database (http://www.ibdb.com/), it's only been on Broadway once, from Feb 18, 1948 - Jan 06, 1951 (http://www.ibdb.com/show.php?id=6159).
-
These are the Tony Awards that it won:
-
I noticed that Harvey Lembeck (http://www.ibdb.com/person.php?id=77297) was in the original cast.
-
David Wayne was the original Ensign Pulver.
-
Today on TCM has been a tribute to Henry Fonda. The next movie, which just started and I'm recording, is "A Big Hand for the Little Lady." I loved the ending. :D
-
It's available for purchase, but my own burned DVDs are good enough for me.
-
In the beginning when Kevin McCarthy is being driven on the stage coach through the hills, you can see modern tire tracks in the dirt at one point. ;)
-
It would be faboo to have a Blu and Ray of Mr. Roberts. I wonder if a revival would be fun. Have they done one EVER?
My sister's boyfriend is able to make Blu-ray discs from hi-def DVR recordings. It has to be recorded on a DVR and then he can copy it through a firewire cable to his laptop. Then he can do what he does and burn it to a hi-def Blu-ray.
-
He said that someday he'll show me how to do it, but I need to get whatever program that can do it and a Blu-ray burner. He's been saying that for a couple of years, now.
-
Maybe for Christmas he'll finally show me how.
-
Well, since we're finally so close...
