Well, you've read the notes, the notes had that old black magic, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing That Old Black MOOgic.

Is the "Previous Notes/Next Notes" navigation at the bottom of the Notes something new? I had never noticed that before.

I just watched "The Muppet Movie" on Blu-ray.  I still love it!  HOWEVER, it's been edited.  On post on IMDb says:

Quote
My wish is that they'd fully restore the scene between Rowlf and Kermit in the bar after Miss Piggy deserts him. You can hear the full exchange on the soundtrack still. Rowlf asks him if he wants a drink and Kermit says "I'd like a grasshopper please." and Rowlf says "Could we get a grasshopper for the frog?" The movie jump-cuts to Rowlf introducing himself.

I assume some muckity muck didn't like the fact that Kermit was ordering an alcoholic beverage, but it's the Muppets, I just assumed it was made out of real grasshoppers, hehe.

Yes, the passage is on the newly re-released soundtrack and no, it's not on the newly released Blu-ray.

:P to that, is what I say.

Good morning, all! Today is our second day of band rehearsals. This morning, we will finish going through Act Two, and this afternoon the singers will rehearse with the band. It shoulkd be a lot of fun.  Diana Montague joins us today, and I look forward to meeting her.

Last night my leg was acting up quite a bit; I finaslly took some Tylenol for Arthritis and eventually fell asleep.  I take some comfort in the fact that if I were a horse, I would now be a can of dogfood.

Have a great day, everyone! I'm off to breakfast.

And in the same topic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079588/board/flat/214687847) above that post is this post:

Quote
How sad. Jim Henson's name does not appear on the cover. But Disney's sure does.

That aside, the rest of the cover art is still garbage. Why do they insist on creating collages using images of their current iterations for covers of their older movies? What is wrong with the beautiful artwork Drew Struzan painted for the original posters?

The most positive thing I will say about this cover is that it has a Studebaker on it.

It's all revisionist history.  Granted, these are minor issues that don't detract much from how much I love the movie, but still....

I think Keely Smith is one of the finest singers of the American Songbook that we have ever had.

I do, however, hate the arrangement of her famous duet rendition of "That Old Black Magic" with husband Louis Prima.

Saturday morning greetings!  Thank you for all the vibes that appeared for Richard last night and early this morning.  I picked up a sandwich on my way home last night and had a big glass of wine with it when I got home.  Watched some Orange is the New Black on Netflix and managed to stay awake until almost 11.  Slept like a rock.

I now have to get a couple of chores done and get out to the hospital to see what's what.  Hope to bring Richard home with me!

I enjoy Marilyn Monroe is just about everything....I certainly like her more before she was brainwashed by the Strasberg leeches....after that what she did seemed to be difficult and not instinctual like before....BUS STOP was where that all starts for me....  It's a wonderful performance....but it's terribly "actor-y...."

Also I like:

NIAGARA
HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE
SOME LIKE IT HOT
SEVEN YEAR ITCH
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES
ASPHALT JUNGLE

What is very painful to watch is the comparison of her performance to that of Doris Day's in the SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE/MOVE OVER, DARLING movie.  A lot of Marilyn's film is included on the MOD dvd...  And there is a put-together of the film with just Marilyn's scenes - and the rest of the movie - available on another DVD - and lots of out takes on the FOX Tv presentation.....SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE - The Last Film....or something like that.

I would really like to see the film MARILYN, a Fox compilation narrated by Rock Hudson.  Included in that is the alternate take of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" which was reshot in CinemaScope for use as a demonstration to exhibitors...  GPB is not a CinemaScope or widescreen film.....
Title: Re: THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC

Oh....and RIVER OF NO RETURN is a great favorite as well.  Too bad FOX gave her such lackluster leading men....Tom Ewell and David Wayne....  With Mitchum, she really came across.....

Oh...and

Going over to this, later this afternoon or early evening:

http://www.bridgewaterfair.com/

I have a lot of friends in the area who will be working and attending it.  I'll go just long enough to enjoy it a little in the light AND as it gets dark, something I always like at such venues as fairs, carnivals, and amusement parks.  I've been going to this one for so many years that I don't need or want to spend a lot of time at it, just enjoy it for a while.

Good news, DR Ginny! I got your PM and I appreciate the full report.

Diana Montague has arrived, and we have our full cast!  Tomorrow morning, Jason and Kim will record "I Won't Dance," and Jason and Annalene will record their playful "Let's Begin."  The heavies are in the afternoon session with Diana: "The Touch of Your Hand" (Death Scene), "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," and "Yesterdays."

After the band sessions, everyone staying at the Hibernian Club - Annalene, Patrick, Kim, Michele McKenzie, Jason, Glenn, Rob, and I - went to a good Italian place around the corner from the Club. It's a wonderful group of folk, and we had a  fantastic time. I've taken my pain meds; I didn't earlier in the day and my leg is feeling it.  I've got two violin parts to mark up for tomorrow, and I'm going to bed.

Had some bacon and eggs, picked up one package, did some banking, and have been writing the commentary for the last few hours - I'm over two-thirds through so will finish later tonight.  I still have to listen to the Sandy mixes today and so no rest or relaxation for me, I'm afraid, since I now also have to go jog.

Thanks for all the welcome-home wishes for Richard.  All of his prescriptions have been filled and we now know why the hospital gave him all those coupons and offers for co-pay assistance for one of them.  Yikes, it was expensive, even with insurance!

There was some delay in Vixdad's dinner as the server accidently  dropped the tray after  serving the vixter and myself and Vixdad's dinner hit the deck
Title: Re: THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC
Post by: vixmom on August 17, 2013, 06:43:48 PM
It was not actually our waitress who dropped it but a food runner  - he was truly upset and apologetic and hn the waitress came apologized and then the server manager and then the GM  brought Vixdad's replacement dinner out himself with more apologies

Then after dinner the server  wheeled over a sawhorse with a saddle on it and I was invited to sit on the saddle while our waitress  yelled out to everyone that it was my birthday  instead of singing happy birthday they all yelled "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAA!!"

Almost finished listening to mixes - these were made hastily these mp3s and don't sound as good as they did in the studio, which is frustrating - still I've only found a handful of minor adjustments.  But I'll be happy to have these made correctly so I'm not hearing weird compression on the voice (different machines than in the studio) and endless digital clicks,  none of which are on the mixes as played in the studio with their superb equipment.

Finished the mixes, and am now listening to an upcoming master again - opinions sharply divided on this score, but I think it's one of the best from its decade and one ripe for rediscovery - especially as the score was kind of butchered in the film - cut up into bits with many cues unused.  Funnily, the people who were doing the most complaining about it in various Film Score Monthly threads, kept returning to the old CD over and over again - and it is completely addictive - but when the score is heard the way the composer wrote it it is a whole different ball of fish in a kettle.

Went out on a BBQ run today. Did a small pocket of Texas not known for its 'cue. Ended up going to six places in a 500-mile radius. A couple were not very good, but there were some riches to be had. One place had excellent brisket, just moist with fat and the subtlest flavor of pecan smoke. Another had cabrito that had a crunchy outer layer and moist meat at the bone.

I have leftovers for more than a week. And then it's back on the trail.

Today, I went to work for a few hours and got some invoicing done.  Wednesday is the cut-off for this month's invoicing.  Later this afternoon, I went to a showing of the new one-act version of "Cinder-Edna" that I was involved in back in June.  It was really well done.  The cut one character (and unfortunately one actress) to get it down to about an hour and 10 minutes.  They want to offer two versions:  this new one-act version for younger students and the original two-act version for anyone.  I still think that they need to rewrite two songs (not because they're not good), but the rest of the score is quite delightful. :)

Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer recorded a version of "That Old Black Magic" on her solo album, The Tender Trap (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00000J7ZD/) and the arrangement was mostly in 5/4.  It went to 6/4 at times, but mostly it was in 5/4.  I love that version, too.
