Well, you've read the notes, you've stretched in your homes whilst reading the notes, the notes have stretched you, and now you are ready to post until the stretched cows come home.
-
And a happy haineshisway.com birthday wish to the long lost LC.
-
Some favorite politically themed movies (other than those already mentioned by bk)..
MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN
MEPHISTO
LA GUERRE EST FINIE
TUNES OF GLORY
That's all I can think of for right now. Considering I'm still searching for the last two hours which have inexplicably disappeared, it's not too bad.
-
I'm all alone here... Maybe everyone has disappeared with the last two hours. Alien abduction?
-
I just read the notes again. I see that bk DID mention ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN.
So I'll add... NASHVILLE. And BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK
and for conversation's sake...HIGH NOON, which is a very politically themed pic.
Part of losing the last two hours is feeling totally hyper and not sleepy. I know not why.
-
I'd go for a walk. excerpt that I heard from the president of the Neighborhood Watch in the area that the "gang" which is active around here is...ready?... the Russian Mafia. I have a bad history with Russians, so I think I'll stay in.
-
Another vote for All the President's Men, and must also give a nod to Dr. Strangelove.
-
Absolutely Strangelove! How could I have forgotten?
-
Happy Birthday Leslie (LC) who has been known to lurk!
-
Happy Birthday to LC!
I'm still awake...I'm bored...maybe I should try to sleep...but I'm not sleepy...hmmm
-
Dan (theMan) I’m so pleased your sister taped TIGER CRUISE for you. :D
Ann it is usually the second or third workout that gets to me. The first time back is the easiest.
I’m sleepy but can’t sleep.
Matt H, MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE is one of my favorite movies.
Bruce GOOD VIBES for your show tonight!
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LC!
GOOD HEALTH VIBES TO ELMORE AND MAY ALL GO WELL TODAY!
-
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Good Healing Vibes to Elmore and Jane![/move]
Break a leg, Bruce!
Have a wonderful day all!
-
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~~~~ ;D[/move]Good performance Vibes to What If!
Great picture of the Earth DTM....wow!
DRJOSE walked by the Griffith Observatory - which (in addition to making an appearance in REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE and THE PHANTOM FROM SPACE) was World Headquarters of the Space Agency in Rocky Jones!
Political movies....hmmmmmmmm....most of my favorites have been mentioned:
THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962) - which is actually a film for ALL generations, how quickly a film for "this" generation will actually show its age.
DR STRANGELOVE, NASHVILLE, JFK
And a couple of comedies THE SENATOR WAS INDISCREET and STATE OF THE UNION.
I don't think I will have internet access today, until I return from rehearsal tonight. Time will tell. :P
-
I've drawn a blank on the topic of the day. Guess it not favourite Movie genre.
-
Of course it is now Goodnight from OZ.
-
Public congratulations to DR td who has indeed calculated the time zone differences perfectly. I guess there must be an incentive. Welcome home.
-
I'm back, I'm catching up with all the posts from weekend,
I did indeed have a WICKED time and not just during that show!
Thanks for all the b'day wishes, DRs!
Belated Birthday Wishes from Minx & me to DR DB!
Ben! Did you mention your anniversary at dinner? ? Belated Anniversary Wishes from Martin Mull's double!
Tomovoz, you are a WICKED man. . .I like that!
-
High on my list would be the Michael Ritchie/Jeremy Larner movie, "The Candidate." Judy Holliday shot some good zingers toward the Washington establishment in "Born Yesterday" (and even "The Solid Gold Cadillac").
-
TOD: Just about all my favorites have been mentioned. I have to say that my particular fav is The Manchurian Candidate. Not only a taut thriller with great performances, but also perversely funny.
-
The original MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE... I won't even see the remake. When Angela is quoted as saying "I wish they hadn't made it" you know you are trouble. I understand they cut all references to solitare from the remake.
I read yesterday that the reason Kristen didn't stay with WICKED longer is that she and Idena hated each other and did not get along together at all. Has anyone else heard these rumors? Is there any truth to them?
-
Ben,
You shuffled away from last night's sparkling chat before this enquiring mind was able to ask, "How come you're at the office so early these days?"
I also like to get an early start. I love the sounds of the city when it's first waking up. But is your local Starbucks open before 6 am?
-
DIT, I saw that question and was about to log back in to answer it but I couldn't get back into the site for some reason.
We have a deadline every October and to meet it we need to do some overtime in the summer months (from August through the middle of October) hence the 6am office hours (plus Saturday hours). It's a drag on the system but I get paid for it and last year the overtime helped to pay for the Christmas trip to London so I won't complain too much. No Starbucks at 6am. It's either Deli coffee or making a pot at the office. Depending on how tired I am, I will just get a large coffee at the deli or make an entire pot (the coffee at the office is Lousy with a capital L) in the office kitchen. No one else comes in as early so I'm all by myself and get much more work done from 6am-9am than I can do in an entire day sometimes.
-
I can't think of any political movies just yet...in fact, I can't think at all just yet...I am sitting at my work computer sipping coffee and trying to wake up!
It is going to be over 100 degrees today in Salem Oregon. :-\
-
Yes, all of my favorites in the political film arena have been named already, but just for the record they are THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, ADVISE AND CONSCENT, ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, JFK.
This week, TCM will be showing THE BEST MAN, a movie I've never seen all the way through, so I am really looking forward to watching/recording it.
What's the name of the fairly recent movie where Joan Allen is in the running for the Vice-Presidental nomination and is in competition with William Petersen for it? Despite the fact that the title eludes my sleepy brain, I did REALLY like it.
-
A friend who saw BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II already (doesn't show on our PBS station until Wednesday night) said that the "Always Mademoiselle" number from COCO will be one of the extra numbers on the DVD issue of the program.
Color me happy! :D
-
DR Matt,
I saw Katharine Hepburn in a scaled-down Toronto production of COCO. And though I'm not as enthusiastic about the show as you are, it does have one of my favorite lyrics. I have only the LP, and no functioning record player, so forgive (and correct) me if I don't have the words quite right. From Let's Go Home:
"... It's time to window shop for dreams again."
-
WEL: I have heard/read Kristen state in many interviews that she absolutely adores Idina, and vice-versa.
One of the main reasons the show works so well is that they had great chemistry.
-
I can't think of any political movies just yet...in fact, I can't think at all just yet...I am sitting at my work computer sipping coffee and trying to wake up!
It is going to be over 100 degrees today in Salem Oregon. :-\
That sounds like the first lines from an opening number:
Goin' to be over a hundred degrees
Today in Salem, Oregon.
Sippin' caffine, pokin' my PC keys,
Too hot to even log on.
-
Matt H - The Joan Allen/Wm Petersen movie you were searching for is The Contender. (Not a memorable title!)
-
I saw Broadway's Lost Treasures Part 2 last night. And yes they kept advertising the COCO number as an extra.
It will be on again tonight. So I will probably tape it.
I was actually hoping to watch the Amish show. They listed it as "coming up next" on Global tv (Canada). But it wasn't on. :(
-
Happy Birthday to DR LC! Where are you? We miss your posts.
-
Matt H - The Joan Allen/Wm Petersen movie you were searching for is The Contender. (Not a memorable title!)
Thank you, Panni. That's exactly the title I was trying to remember. I really enjoyed it, probably the most of any political fiction film of the last decade or so.
-
I hope some DRs can make it to the Triad tomorrow night at 7 to see DR Jenny Breaking Down. It's a swift and entertaining showcase that will send you dancing into the street.
Political film favorites: Seven Days In May, The Front
as well as some already mentioned.
Political comment on a political movie:
The idea of a remotely-controlled puppet in the White House was a very scary idea when the first Manchurian Candidate came out during the Kennedy years. Now, the idea of a remotely-controlled puppet in the White House is all too real to be scary, or entertaining.
-
Re: Jane's request for help to get Tiger Cruise on tape.
DR Jane, now I feel so bad. You were so generous to offer to transfer your TIVO'd Tiger Cruise to video. But I don't want you to go to anymore trouble.
If anyone has it and can transfer to a tape, please IM me. I don't want you to have to send it to DR Jane, and then her to send it to me.
Thanks.
-
"Now, the idea of a remotely-controlled puppet in the White House is all too real to be scary, or entertaining."
It's still VERY scary for me, but you're right, not at all entertaining and all too real.
-
Whenever I feel afraid, I hold myself erect
And whistle a happy tune so no one will suspect
I'm afraid.....
-
Oh and best of luck and good vibes to the What If gang tonight ~~~~~~~~!!!!!!
-
The political movies that I like that I can think of are:
"Dr. Strangelove" (of course)
"The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!"
"Start the Revolution Without Me"
And a parody of the Watergate scandal: "Nasty Habits"
-
One of my favorite "political" movies is "The Candidate."
-
"McKay....The Better Way"
I still have a bumper sticker the theater was giving away when the movie played.
-
I have a funny story from yesterday.
When I went to return The Human Stain the video girl was telling me that a lot of men have been renting it when they find out that Nicole Kidman is nude.
She said that nobody had taken out the dvd, and then one guy did. And when he was bringing it back, she heard him telling others in the store about the nudity.
Than a few minutes later, a whole bunch of guys were crowding around her asking, "excuse me, but do you have the Human Stain?"
:)

Cyndi Lauper might replace Donna Murphy in Wonderful Town:

I dunno, I just can't see this

Here is the Kristin rumor. I personally don't believe it.

I just Googled "Big Brother 5" and found an interesting link that told me that a 27-year-old Portuguese transexual had just won the UK's latest "Big Brother" competition.

No solitaire in the new Manchurian Candidate
-
DR RLP, I am waiting to read what you know who does at the veto ceremony which is happening now/soon.
It wouldn't be seemly to discuss it here before it airs tomorrow evening.
-
No solitaire in the new Manchurian Candidate
A missed opportunity--they could have used the solitaire computer game. Or maybe something else:
"Raymond, I think you should play a game of Bookworm..."
-
Speaking of nekkid Nicole Kidman, did anyone here see The Blue Room on B'way a few years back?
-
I will await the DVD of Broadway Treasures II. I tried to watche the 50s pop music special on Saturday and the beg breaks have gotten more frequent and longer than ever. And there were several pleas for money by the singers as part of the show.
-
TOD: (interpreting "political theme " broadly)
CALIGOLA
BECKET
A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
1776
and more recently
NICK OF TIME (which certainly has echoes of Manchurian Candidate)
Do not confuse Vidal's Caligola with the 1996 Hungarian picture:
"Caligula" - written and directed by one Sándor Cs. Nagy
Does a DR have a mystery relative?
der Brucer (who would probably vote for Advise and Consent as the best of the batch mentioned)
-
Nicole is pretty nekkid in MALICE, though I have to admit I was looking at Alec Baldwin myself.
-
TOD: (interpreting "political theme " broadly)

How could I forget "1776" - one of my all time favorite musical movies!

Do we know what the other extras on the BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II DVD will be in addition to the number from COCO? Was that the only one they mentioned.
-
Just on for a moment to send EVEN more vibes to WHAT IF for their run-thru and audience tonight.
Looking forward to hearing ALL about it.
ADVISE & CONSENT is very good in that it portrays a working of the Senate that I didn't really know much about when I first saw it, and of course it inspired to me to look into the rules and regulations about appointments, etc. This was of course decades before C-Span.
Although we are now nearly covered up with political news, it is better to be informed.

Oh there were lots more. And they play them over and over again during the breaks.
If you named something, I could probably tell you.
I know one was some blond guy as Joseph.
Maybe there is a list on the PBS site?
-
Btw, speaking of PBS, did anyone see the Evening At Pops that was on last week with Kristin Chenoweth? She is an amazing performer. I just can't believe how she acts out each song.
There was one song that was so hilarious. I cannot remember the title. But basically she played it as a wife who had caught her husband cheating. And she dragged him all over the stage. IT was brilliant.
As was 14G.
-
Good Morning!
Just wanted to pop in before I head out to get ready for today's run-thrus. I can't wait to have an audience tonight! Excited and scared!
As for political movies.. Hmm.. I'll have to think about this one. They're not my usual cup of tea.
Well, time for me to venture out into the environs of L.A. I need to run a few errands before heading to the theatre.
See you tonight... After the invited dress rehearsal!
-
Do we know what the other extras on the BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES II DVD will be in addition to the number from COCO? Was that the only one they mentioned.
On the program they showed previews of these extras.
Bill Hutton in Joseph
Kathi Moss in Nine
Tom Bosley in Fiorello
Katharine Hepburn in Coco
Robert Lindsay in Me and My Girl

GOOD VIBES TO BRUCE, THE SHOW AND OUR OWN DR JOSE!
-
Done with this morning's errands and will be heading off to the theater shortly. Thanks for the vibes and xylophones and you know you'll get a full report.
-
Very sad news to report, actress Fay Wray passed away last night in New York at age 96.
-
:( But wow, 96! :)
-
Jennifer if it’s easier for someone to send me, in country, copies of TIGER CRUISE, I don’t mind sending them on to Canada and Australia. :)
-
I have not heard from elmore yet so…
CONTINUED GOOD HEALING VIBES!!!
-
:( But wow, 96! :)
Yep, she lived to a ripe old age and still lived independently in her own apartment.
I remember seeing her on the Oscar telecast a few years back..it was wonderful. Having starred in King Kong she is such a big part of motion picture history, but fortunately her stories have been recorded both in her autobiography and in a wonderful interview that Rick McCay did for Scarlet Street a few years back.
-
I have not heard from elmore yet so…
CONTINUED GOOD HEALING VIBES!!!
Yes, he promised to call me after his appointment today! Hoping all is well!
-
Film composer David Raksin, best known for the classic film score (and theme) to "Laura," died of heart failure last night.
He was 92. Other well-known fims with superb scores by Raksin were "Forever Amber," "The Bad and the Beautiful," "Carrie" (Jennifer Jones movie) and "Separate Tables."
http://www.filmmusicsociety.org/news_events/news_events.html
For those who believe that deaths come in threes (relative to occupation among celebrities), we lost film music legend Jerry Goldsmith a few weeks ago, followed closely by Italian composer Piero Piccioni and now Raksin.
-
RLP thanks for the link.
-
Oh there were lots more. And they play them over and over again during the breaks.
If you named something, I could probably tell you.
I know one was some blond guy as Joseph.
That would be Bill Hutton, Broadway's first Joseph. I guess I can wait until Wednesday. Thanks.
-
Matt H, I also enjoyed THE CONTENDER very much.
DIT if BORN YESTERDAY is a political movie then I consider one of my favorites, the original that is.
George the same goes for THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!
BECKETT, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, both great movies
I’m trying to come up with some movies which haven’t been mentioned yet. One movie I found sweet and very enjoyable, is DAVE.
I recall SEVEN DAYS IN MAY was a good movie. It has just been too long since I have seen many of these movies.
HERE (http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:uuCxYge2k0EJ:www.epinions.com/content_2028052612+%22POLITICAL+MOVIES%22&hl=en) is a link to an interesting list of best political movies.

In honor of Fay Wray - the lady had great dignity - I'll post a story that I may have told here once before.
Years ago, during my first time living in LA, I was invited to an Oscar party at the Canadian Consulate. There was a new consul who was not the greatest as far as his knowledge of show business. So there was to be a presentation of some sort and we were alll asked to sit in chairs put out on the back lawn. I happened to sit beside Miss Wray and we had a long, lovely conversation about all sorts of things.
Then the ceremony began and the consul started out by introducing dignitaries in the audience. He pointed out a few people who stood and took bows. Miss Wray was not among them. Then he said something like, "And I've saved the best for last. A great and legendary lady who has brought honor to Canada in her many years of...blah blah blah..." I could see Miss Wray straightening out her skirt and getting ready to stand, rising ever so slightly. And then the Consul said..."Miss Adrienne Clarkson!" (the Barbara Walters of Canada, who went on to become the Governor-General).
Miss Wray quietly readjusted her skirt, lowered herself back down, smiled and applauded. And she was never introduced! Aaargggh.
-
Oh, thanks, Joey, for the info. I have all of those except COCO and FIORELLO on homemade tapes of the shows.
I guess the rights to the DREAMGIRLS excerpt are just too expensive since it would certainly be a more tantalizing morsel to dangle before us than NINE or JOSEPH.
-
I watched SEVEN DAYS IN MAY not too long ago, and it's as wonderful as I remembered it being. The DVD transfer also looked very good.
-
Lovely story DRPANNI...oh my....at least Fay didn't get all the way up as did Rosalind Russell just before they announded the Oscar for Loretta Young.
Bill Hutton - I think he went to Indiana University with some friends of mine, and the except seemed to be the original finale, which seems rather sedate compared to the Mega-Mix that now repeats the entire show in 6 1/2 minutes.
-
Sorry to read about David Raksin. I just think "Laura" is one of the lushest, most romantic movie tunes ever composed.
-
In addition to "King Kong", I remember Fay Wray (full name Vina Fay Wray) from her mid-50s sitcom "Pride of the Family". Her husband was played by Paul Hartman and her daughter was (believe ot or not) Natalie Wood!
-
I don't know from political movies.
There is a slobbery brown furry lump on my lap purring and meowing at me.
I was treated to an hour-long drum solo last night from 12:30 to 1:30 a.m.
Vibes for What If? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And get-better vibes for DR Elmore! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Fay Wray also played John Saxon's mother in both ROCK PRETTY BABY and SUMMER LOVE.
And David Raksin wrote the score for the original version of THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE!!
I have surmised the plot and outcome of the current Manchurian Candidate for the "now" generation...it's sort of the Pepsi of Manchurian Candidate movies, I guess. I was a bit put off when Mrs. Iselin was given a name - Eleanor....and in fact was Eleanor Shaw, which told me that Johnny Iselin was probably nowhere to be found. Then I discovered that her son Raymond was the man who was to be the VP candidate...but then....then....how....why.... Well I stumbled on the answer and it did not set well with me, so I will not be seeing it...maybe on DVD...maybe.
I think I would rather pass the time by playing a little solitaire....

My summer job, in-between I forget which college years, was Production Assistant (better known as gofer) on a television movie. Among my responsibilities was delivering scripts to actors. Sometimes, these were names unknown to me; sometimes, the script was being delivered to an actor who'd not yet agreed to take a role; sometimes, the "actors" were actually old-time Hollywood screenwriters. Once, the delivery went to an apartment, I believe, in Century City. A little old lady opened the door and she was, for a little old lady, ravishing. She had a great smile and twinkles in both eyes. And such charm! Such a pleasure to meet me, she said. I got the impression it had been quite a while since somebody had delivered her a script.
I may or may not have known at the time that this little old lady was the writer/producer's mother-in-law, and the address had the lady's current married name, which was not the name of the producer's wife.
Nor was it Wray. I later found out this was indeed Fay Wray, and she charmed us all her one day on the set.
-
I have a similar story during Craig’s graduation ceremony from Middle School, only I was the one standing at the wrong moment. Awards were given for both drama and the speech team. For both Craig always knew his lines and was always prepared and dedicated. It was with the drama class where he really set an example for the other students, plus he had the lead in BYE BYE BIRDIE.
The day before a big speech competition Craig was asked to fill in for another student and had only the evening to learn the lines, which he did. As a result he was given the award for speech. The award he coveted, expected and deserved was the drama award. There was only one drama award left to give. The teacher described Craig perfectly and this proud mother stood up, only to hear a less deserving student’s named announced.
Later the teacher explained, without my asking, she was trying to share the awards and not give two to one student. She just didn’t realize she gave him the wrong award.
-
Thank you for the story about Fay Wray, Panni! So what kinds of thinks did you talk to her about?
I would have loved to have met her. I very much enjoyed her autobiography.
-
Oops! You were half there, JRand53: I'm sure you know it was David Amram who composed "The Manchurian Candidate" (original).
Similar first names, though.
-
Thank you for the story about Fay Wray, Panni! So what kinds of thinks did you talk to her about?

One more book to add to my “to read list” :)

I read yesterday that the reason Kristen didn't stay with WICKED longer is that she and Idena hated each other and did not get along together at all. Has anyone else heard these rumors? Is there any truth to them?
These days, when ISN"T a show hit with rumors like this? "Hated" is the key word: if two professional performers aren't obviously and constantly demonstrating their love for each other, the rumors start that they "hate" each other.
What I heard, and give credence to, is that Chenoweth has had other obligations booked for some time.
And, given the long-term objections I keep hearing about stars of shows who aren't there "for every performance," I'd think this reason for bowing out to be quite legit.
-
No solitaire in the new Manchurian Candidate
What, no one plays games on computers any more?
-
A missed opportunity--they could have used the solitaire computer game. Or maybe something else:
"Raymond, I think you should play a game of Bookworm..."
Similar minds!

TOD: Chaplin"s The Great Dictator.

MBarnum - I'm afraid I have no memory of the specifics of the conversation.
Which reminds me, I don't think I mentioned the other night when I went to see Bea Arthur's show that I ran into some people I knew who had been invited by Billy Goldenberg. I went back with them after the show and met with him (a lovely man) and got to once again thank him for the beautiful score he wrote for Miss Rose White. I also briefly met Bea Arthur. She was very gracious and - this was a surprise to me - rail thin. One always thinks of her as a larger than life character (the voice alone) but she is now quite thin and, in person, almost fragile.
Her Maude daughter, Adrienne Barbeau, was also backstage, as was Doris Roberts.
-
I love Doris Roberts.
I first became aware of her when she played Mildred on "Remington Steele," but I've since discovered she was in "Soap" as the mother of Father Tim, who left the church and fathered Corinne's (BK's very own Diana Canova) child.
-
Two earlier Doris Roberts performances stand out. The first was in Elaine May's A New Leaf. Doris Roberts played the housekeeper - taking total and hilarious advantage of wealthy but hopelessly naive and kind-hearted Elaine. The other role was as a homeless woman on St. Elsewhere. She gave an extraordinarily moving performance.
-
I frequently see Miss Doris Roberts at the L.A. Opera. I believe she is a devoted fan of the art.
-
Evening folks. What a day. I was up bright and early to go to Tower for my X-ray. That went without a hitch. I was done by 7:45.
My ear is/was still very plugged up. So much so that I was/am starting to be very worried so instead of going to work, I went to the doctors office, prepared to wait, until someone could see me. I’m ever so glad I did. It didn’t take very long at all and I only missed an hour and half of work.
It turned out that the drops I was putting in my ears did cure the infection in the ear canal but I have a bigger infection that has settled into the eardrum itself. I can’t hear because the eardrum is swelled and can’t move/vibrate as it normally would. I was given a very powerful antibiotic that I have to take twice a day and told it could be three or four days before my hearing will be restored. Sigh.
The good news being that he didn’t see any damage to the eardrum, just the swelling. I do plan on going and having a hearing test when this clears up just to be sure everything is ok.
With all of the antibiotics I’ve had to take over the past month or so for my mouth and the surgery, you wouldn’t think I could get another infection.
The only downside is that the meds do a number on me as far as tiring me out. I will be hitting the sack very shortly.
I was hoping we would have news of DR Elmore by now. I’m sending healing vibes his way and hope he is doing well.
Jane, I’m also glad to hear that you are doing better.
Good luck/Break a Leg vibes (?) is that possible) to the cast/crew of What If.
We have a tropical storm in the Gulf. Bonnie. And by the weekend Bonnie could have a friend called Charlie. I guess the season is upon us!
-
Feel better vibes, Danise!
-
And I'll join the chorus of HEALING VIBES for DR Elmore!
-
Some years ago I saw Doris Roberts in THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES (with Andrea Martin and Roma Mafia). She was wonderful.
-
Danise, with all those antibiotics you might think about taking acidophilus to prevent other problems due to the antibiotics.
-
What did you say, DR Panni? ;)
Thank you. Just don't try to talk to me on my right side. At least not yet. ;D
-
You know it, Jane. I didn't think it was good for a person to take a lot of of them. But that's my three! They say bad things happen in threes so I have my tooth, my kidney stones and my ear. No more, PLEASE!
-
I wonder if the Mamie Van Doren/June Wilkinson film PARTY GIRLS FOR THE CANDIDATE would be considered a political film?
-
I was only away one night, but one would think it had been longer, given all the "stuff" that piled up while I was gone.
Side by Side by Sondheim was delightful. It was produced by the Rubicon Theatre Company, which is housed in a converted church in the seaside town of Ventura, California. The stage was created not where the altar once was, but in one of the corners, providing a playing space that creates a good deal of intimacy between the actors and the audience. The company just bought the building after leasing it for six years, and their first improvement will be to take out the pew seating and put in real theater seats.
All three SbSbS singers were quite good, individually and collectively; they were equally effective in the dramatic numbers and in the comedy songs.
Miss Tami Tappan Damiano proved herself to be quite the comedienne in several numbers, including "You Gotta Get A Gimmick," "Getting Married Today" and "The Boy From..." Mr. Davis Gaines has a lovely voice and he seemed to be having a great time, especially in some of the schtick he was asked to handle. (For example, he played a silent bartender to Miss Damiano in the "The Boy From.." number and his reactions were priceless.) Miss Teri Ralston brought some solid singing and, in the right spots, an appropriate degree of gravitas to the show.
As narrator, Richard Kline was more actively involved in the proceedings than I remember from the original production of SbSbS. He even sang "Sorry, Grateful," reprising his number from the Reprise! production of Company a few months ago.
As narrator, he was, well, OK. More bland than anything else. Ned Sherrin's original narration was edited, updated and supplemented, and some of the jokes that were dropped in failed miserably.
I should mention that some songs from the original lineup of SbSbS were dropped and others added (though none from any show later than Pacific Overtures.)
On the whole it was a great evening of Sondheim. Whoever says Mr. Sondheim can't write great melodies or that he doesn't have a sense of humor needs to see this show STAT!

The Italian Straw Hat on Sunday was fun, too!
Why this opera by Mr. Nino Rota does not get performed more frequently is beyond me. The story is a silly little farce to which Rota has created some terrific music. Much of the score parodies (or offers homage to, depending on your point of view) other operatic composers, especially Rossini and Puccini and Verdi. Some of the highlights of TISH include a quasi-mad scene that evokes that of MacBeth in Verdi's opera, an Act 2 finale ensemble that could well have been a lost piece of Rossini's and, in the last act, a hysterical send-up of the women's chorus in Act I of Madama Butterfly that involves preparing the lead soprano of TISH for her conjugal bed on the night of her wedding.
The opera was sung and played by students at the Academy of the West, which is highly respected for its vocal program. Inasmuch Miss Marilyn Horne heads said vocal program, that should come as no surprise. (Miss Horne, BTW, was in the audience yesterday.) All the singers handled their parts quite well. Randall Behr conducted and Frank Corsaro (yes, that Frank Corsaro) directed. The sets were fairly elaborate, done in black and white art deco. The lavish costumes, too, were in black and white and the show was a visual treat as well as an aural one.

Feel better, Danise.
Very sorry about the ear infection! It's terrible to lose one of your senses. I know you can hear a little, but that only aggravates.
I agree DR Jane about the acidophilous...or, try some Milk of Magnesia...just to stay "balanced."
-
RLP as for staying balanced ;D I was thinking more in the lines of preventing too much yeast in the system.
-
Nicole is pretty nekkid in MALICE, though I have to admit I was looking at Alec Baldwin myself.
I was looking at the future star of TIGER CRUISE, Bill Pullman.
-
Doris Roberts was the weakest thing in Encore's BYE BYE BIRDIE. I thought that maybe I was the only one who felt that way, but she did not come off well in the reviews either... which were otherwise quite favorable. I would have thought that she would have been ideal in the role (Mae Peterson), but maybe she is not a quick study or maybe she hadn't done stage in a while.
Isn't she on some sitcom now?
-
Some sitcome? ;D "Everybody Loves Raymond" since 1996. She has been nominated for Emmy's for this show. I don't know how many times, if she has, won.
I liked her best in REMINGTON STEEL.
-
Jane (and others) - If you're a Doris Roberts fan and haven't seen A New Leaf, you're in for a treat.
-
I used to love Remington Steele and Doris Roberts in it (and James Read ;) )! I haven't seen it in years. However, I've never seen an entire episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond." It's one of those very popular shows that, for some reason, just doesn't grab my attention, then I miss the whole series. "Everybody Loves Raymond," "King of Queens," "Home Improvement," "Roseanne," "Seinfeld," etc., etc., etc.

Last night, we celebrated der Brucer's birthday. It just took us a while to get around to it.
I knew I was going to be on-call for work. The call arrived at 8 in the morning. So I got myself together, and spent the full Sunday on the job. Truth be told, we did fairly well for a Sunday with clear and balmy weather.
Der Brucer arrived to pick me up from work, and we headed downtown. He has his heart set on duck for dinner, and we'd heard that a place called Victoria's had a good recipe.
We've done better.
The duck itself was done in an oriental barbecue sauce, ending up more like sweet and sour duckling than anything else. It was not what der B. had been hoping for, and while it was served well it was a disappointment. That was problem number one.
Problem number two was the kitchen itself, which suddenly had something like eight tables all ready to be served at once. The kitchen staff ended up "in the weeds," with too many demands and not enough co-ordination. Der B. and I are very forgiving under the circumstances, and the waitstaff did a very good job of covering, even taking the opening cocktails off the tab.
But we've a hunch the second problem caused the third. On the one hand, his "Seafood Martini," with crab and lobster claws, shrimp, and a crabmeat ceviche all served in a martini glass, was a bit dry. By the time he got to the shrimp, there was no liquid left. The same problem was found with my prime rib: the meat itself was quite good, but it could have used some jus to moisten the meal.
Heck, some birthday meals are fabulous. Some don't quite make it to the top list. This meal was of the latter.
The original schedule at work leaves me wide open and off duty for my own birthday. That, of course, could change at a moment's notice.
And that is the latest from Rehoboth.
-
RLP as for staying balanced ;D I was thinking more in the lines of preventing too much yeast in the system.
: )
My first week after surgery, I was taking Keflex three times a day for 7 days. It wreaked havoc on my "system" (i.e., no tickee, no laundry). A nice dose of M of M, though, and things started moving in the right direction!

Doris Roberts in Everybody Loves Ramond has the role of a lifetime, that of the mother from hell. Overbearing and knowing it, yet always acting hurt if anyone confronts her with her habits.
The other standout in the cast is Brad Garrett as brother Robert. Tall people can, indeed, be funny.
-
DIT I haven’t seen A NEW LEAF since it was first out. Back then I had no idea who Doris Roberts was. I just TIVO’d it to record next time it is on TV.
George,we liked EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND the first season then lost interest. What happened to James Read? I was very unhappy when he was written out of the show.
SWW yea, birthdays are like that. I hope your birthday dinner is far superior.
RLP M of M makes me want to barf.

I agree, nothing's funnier than a giant who can crack jokes. My family's all rather tall (my brother's 6'5!) and I like to think we're funny :)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LC (WHEREVER YOU ARE)!!!
I did a 9-5 shift today at work. I went in praying for something non-data-entry related (our ENTIRE staff has spent pretty much every working hour of the last month on cleaning up our 10+ year old database from top to bottom) and promptly got it. Here's a piece of advice: be careful what you wish for.
First off, I had to find several very hard-to-find articles/reports for my boss who is in Spain and then figure out how to fax said articles/reports using a North American fax machine to a Spanish one. Hint, international calling codes are a girl's best friend.
THEN, I came back from a short lunch to discover that our main computer on which we have just about ALL of our documents, important programs (including the database we'd been slaving over) and the modem through which we connect to the internet had crashed.
THEN, we realized that our landlord had raised the rent when he renewed the lease to our office space without telling us. Needless to say it was quite a bit higher than the standard rent-raise allowed by the Régie du logement. Gah!
Well, we finally got the computer working (although there were some tense moments where I was tempted to just take it and throw the whole thing (tower, monitor and all) out of our second storey window. I resisted though :)
Now that was a very long day where because there were so many crises actually ended up feeling short. :)
I watched Broadway's Lost Treasures last night and enjoyed it. I was especially impressed with what I saw from Grand Hotel. I know BK and other DRs are big fans, and now I know why. It looked like a lot of fun, and now I want to buy the cast album...
-
Emily of course tall people can be funny.
What a day you had. I’m still wondering how the rent could go up without a notification. I hope no one at your office signed papers regarding this without reading the fine print.

Our accountant works out of Toronto and is a unilingual anglophone. Our landlord is a Montrealer who is a uniligual francophone.
Hijinks ensue... :D

I love Doris Roberts.
I first became aware of her when she played Mildred on "Remington Steele," but I've since discovered she was in "Soap" as the mother of Father Tim, who left the church and fathered Corinne's (BK's very own Diana Canova) child.
Another Roberts fan here. Very funny lady. I remember that she salt and peppered her way through almost all the Norman Lear and MTM sitcoms during the 70s and made enough of an impression on me that when she landed on Angie (the Donna Pescow sitcom) I already knew her name.

This dance is for Jennifer. Thanks for the "insert hyperlink" tip. It worked and was EASY. :)

There's an idea for a topic: popular TV series we never watched. I never watched a single episode of ER.

I have caught up on the posting and now going back and read BK's musings

I have had that happen in the past. I think it was with reply instead of quote.

Within what timeframe?
We could go back many a year and I could honestly respond "All of them."
The last series I watched with any kind of regularity--and this dates me--is "Dynasty."
-
Doris Roberts has won the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Emmy for the past three years and is nominated again this year.
I think the first time I remember her was guest starring on THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW as a manager of an employment agency that Phyllis goes to to find a job. A wonderful job comes up that Phyllis is just right for, and when she calls the firm to make an appointment for an interview, she takes it for herself and leaves Phyllis standing in the agency's office.
-
Thoroughly enjoyed MR. BLANDINGS BUILDS HIS DREAM HOUSE tonight with a very sharp and beautiful transfer with almost no flaws at all. Then watched the DVD of ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED, another of my laserdisc titles I've replaced with the DVD recently.
Up tomorrow: MY DARLING CLEMENTINE.

Echo is driving us crazy. She stands at one door in the house and barks, with her very loud bark, until we let her out. After a bit she comes back in and goes to a different door, barking until we let her out. Do you think she wants attention? :D
-
There's an idea for a topic: popular TV series we never watched. I never watched a single episode of ER.
I never saw an episode of LA LAW or ST. ELSEWHERE.

Jay, I suppose watching Dynasty could cure you of watching any future TV. :D
Off to give my little girl some attention.
-
I was just invited for a hot dog and a glass of wine by my landlords. Saves me having to forage for supper.
-
Jay, I suppose watching Dynasty could cure you of watching any future TV. :D
Dynasty was a camp classic, even before Joan Collins came on board. Pamela Sue Martin's acting was so bad on the early episodes that she never failed to have me rolling on the floor.
-
Nice new pic, DR Dan-t-M.
-
Never got through an episode of Seinfeld, Never watched Dynasty nor Dallas. Never watched ER either.

Just catching up with the feature sections from Sunday's L.A. Times. Here's an item that should be of interest to many Dear Readers:

STAGE
'Sweeney' times two equals zero
L.A. Opera's production was due at the same time as the release of a movie version. Now both are on hold.
By Don Shirley
Times Staff Writer
Aug 8 2004
Attend the tale of "Sweeney Todd" — that is, of "Sweeney Todd" and Los Angeles Opera.
The company wanted to present the Stephen Sondheim musical melodrama about a vengeful barber, primarily as a vehicle for Bryn Terfel. Initially, it planned to use a recent Royal Opera production of the show. But Sondheim didn't like the Royal Opera's staging enough to approve its replication.
So the Angelenos turned to a "Sweeney" production from Opera North in Leeds, England, that Sondheim had endorsed. In January, company officials announced that "Sweeney" and Terfel would appear at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for seven performances in May 2005.
Then Sondheim attorney John Breglio had second thoughts. He felt that the spring 2005 slot was too close to the anticipated release of a movie version of "Sweeney" that DreamWorks and director Sam Mendes are planning. The projects might compete for attention in the crucial Los Angeles media market, he said. So he pulled the rights.
Breglio says this wasn't DreamWorks' doing. "I would never let DreamWorks be heavy-handed. This was our sensitivity. You protect artists and give them the air and space they need," he said. He added that he wasn't singling out L.A. Opera, noting that he had no problem with the company's just-closed production of Sondheim's "A Little Night Music."
Regarding the "Sweeney" backtracking, "I would have done the same thing with any other major company in L.A.," Breglio said. The Philadelphia market apparently wasn't considered as crucial. A production of "Sweeney" is still scheduled for spring in that city.
In place of "Sweeney," L.A. Opera booked Verdi's "Falstaff," also with Terfel. Now, though, it's increasingly obvious that the movie version of Sondheim's show won't be released any time near May. Mendes decided to work on another movie, "Jarhead," first. In a recent e-mail in response to inquiries by The Times, Sondheim said that "depending on the future schedule of the movie," L.A. Opera would have no problem getting approval next year. But for L.A. "Sweeney" fans, it's too late. A spokesman for L.A. Opera said that deals for "Falstaff" with the unions are in place. The company will do the show some other time, he said.

Seems to me a case that borders on lose-lose. Not to say that I am not looking forward to Mr. Bryn Terfel's Falstaff. It's just that the L.A. Opera did so well with A Little Night Music that it would have been interesting to see how they handled Sweeney Todd and to see Mr. Terfel in the title role.
Another disappointment is not seeing Mr. Nathan Gunn in the role of Anthony Hope. For those of you unfamilair with this young American baritone, let's just say that he sings as well as he looks, not that it would matter much.
-
Nice new pic, DR Dan-t-M.
Thank you, DR Matt. That Coke bottle was getting heavy.
-
Here's a more informal portrait of Mr. Gunn.
-

Hmmm...maybe they can mount Passion, instead, with Mr. Gunn playing Georgio.

Just had chocolate birthday cake with my landlords. A complete meal. Now to clean up before my daughter arrives to stay a few days (she's been in Canada).
-
I have missed out on a lot of popular shows. I tend to limited my regular TV series viewing to just a select few...I barely have enough time to watch all of the DVDs I have bought or the movies that I tape!
Currently (during the summer months) the only shows I watch on a regular basis are Big Brother, Amazing Race, and the morning news.
I have never seen any of the CSI shows, any of the Law and Order shows, King of the Hill, Scrubs, or hmmmm...well, I am sure there are lots more but I cannot think of any.
I do check out Everybody Loves Raymond now and then...it is pretty funny!
-
"Raymond" is the only sitcom that I watch these days.
(not a must to record if I am out or whatever but I do enjoy the show).
-
I had 7th Heaven on as I tidied up - a guilty pleasure. It's such a calm show. The episode - which I caught halfway through was about the death of the father of the wife of the family. They didn't show him, except for the end of the episode where there was a montage of photos. The photos were of the actor Graham Jarvis. So I assumed he had played the father on previous episodes and they were killing him off. I knew Graham Jarvis in my pevious LA existence and liked him. (Met him as a fellow Canadian expatriate. He was over at our house a few times.) As the show ended a card came up "Dedicated to Graham Jarvis" - giving year of birth and recent death. He really had died and I hadn't heard... I'm sad.
-
Doris Roberts in Bye Bye Birdie was just about the worst performance I've ever seen given by a name performer on stage. Charlton Heston's Macbeth pales in comparison.
I've never made it through a whole ...Raymond.
-
I was going to name my favorite politcal movies, but Bruce already named most of the best ones. Each one of those films affected me.
I'll need to go back and read the start of the postings to see how we got off on shows we never watched (that everyone thinks we should watch) I never watched an episode of "Cosby," "Survivor," "American Idol" whatever the show with Gary Coleman was called, most of those "comedies" of ABC in the last decade or so, and hundreds of others.
It's so nice to see you guys. :D
-
DR Panni, I actually like 7th Heaven very much and watch it during the regular season.
Yes, the man who played the grandfather was on occasionally. And the episode where they had him die was terribly sad (since as you said, he had died in real life).
-
Welcome back DR Kerry!
And feel better to DRs Danise and Elmore ~~~~~~!!!
Is What If over yet?
-
Is What If over yet?
If you mean the Dress Rehearsal, not quite. It started at 8. It's now around 9:45. So with an intermission, it'll probably run a little longer. Then notes, I would think.
-
And one for Mahler!
-
I hope some DRs can make it to the Triad tomorrow night at 7 to see DR Jenny Breaking Down. It's a swift and entertaining showcase that will send you dancing into the street.
Entertaining? Certainly. But swift? That's a stretch. ;)
The only enormously popular television show that I watch is "Will And Grace" now that "Friends" and "Sex And The City" have gone off the air.
I would love to post a response to today's TOD, but I honestly can't think of a single political movie that I've seen! I'm sure that I have seen and enjoyed many political movies, so I think that this temporary amnesia is a sign that it is time for bed.
-
No post for almost an hour! Skammen!
-
I'm back and to prove it, I'm here. Much to tell you about our first performance in front of an audience. But I must wolf down some food first, then write the notes, which may go up a few minutes late depending on the speed of the wolf - I shall, of course, try to eat at wolf speed.
-
I have nothing to say, but I'm bored, so I thought I'd post anyway. TOTD...nothing to say on that at the moment. I just had a cup of blueberry yogurt. It was tasty. I'm listening to Babs right now...haven't done that in quite awhile.
