Title: ODE TO A NIGHTINGALE AND OTHER ASSORTED ODES
Post by: bk on September 04, 2013, 12:15:48 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were an Ode to a Notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently reciting Ode to a Cow by Keats.

It certainly is! Rosh Hashanah starts tonight. I will be scarce here on this board, as I will be singing all tonight and all day tomorrow.

BK pointed out last night:
BK said:  "I have been battered and bruised by certain types all over the Internet - a lot of that boils down to the cretin who pursues me all over the Internet, and anyone who thinks THAT'S paranoia knows nothing of what's been happening since 2007.  It would drive anyone to paranoia or distraction.  But you know what - if I'm so paranoid and destructive maybe we should just call this board quits.  Because really I think my history here with most dear readers has not only been positive, but supportive and friendly, as well. "

I actually in both cases have would up appreciating when I've just been away a day or two (even if for no other reason than I've been evry busy and often don't want to post until I ketch-up) and you write an email of some sort to make sure everything's OK.  I'm hoping my one day of raised voices at you when I was in the middle of a family crisis is an indicator only that I have a boiling point in general, not any lack of admiration for you or appreciation for the site.

That said, I wonder if by saying from time to time you're going to close down the site -  you'd be delighting whoever is plaguing you

I see that all 54 of the French Maigret TV films with Bruno Cremer are now available on region 1 DVD on the MHZ Networks label on 9 volumes, with 6 films in each volume. All have English subtitles unlike the French box sets which had only 40 films in 4 box sets with subtitles; a 5th box annoyingly contained mainly unsubtitled episodes. DVD Discount is offering a buy one get one free at the moment.

Good morning, all!

Last night was a bad sleeping night but a very good reading night. The pain meds did not want to work and I was up past midnight reading another Alison Weir book on Anne Boleyn's last days. I will probably nap later. As soon as I've finished my coffee, I will walk to my bank and deposit the Check from Philadelphia.  As soon as it clears, I am ordering a new mattress.

DR TCB, I am honored to be one of your favorite nuts and to be in the company of BK and FJL. I'll be happy when I'm feeling better and my sense of humor is restored.

Gave home a dose of medicine and pain killers. I had them put him in a suite so he would not be around other dogs and had him not to doggy day camp. I'm so upset that this happened while I'm away

On the lighter side this being the Jewish New Year I am reminded of a non-Jewish friend of mine asking me what my favorite thing about Rosh Hashanah was. I told my friend it was blowing the shofar. Evidentially they misunderstood me. But happy to report they are celebrating their 10th anniversary together.

Mention of DR Mike's own Kismet reminds me:

I just acquired the DVD of a little movie musical by that name.  It's hard to come by at a reasonable price, but I finally spotted one and snatched it out of the hands of an Amazon seller for a "mere" $20.  I see there's another one up for $26; the rest are $50 and up.  Anyhoo, I'd never seen the film version, and at a glance this CinemaScope DVD looks and sounds spectacular.  The orchestrations are probably of the typical film super-sizing, but the few seconds I heard sounded about as faithful to the original as I imagine one can hope for.

Thank you, DR ArnoldBrockman! I finally bit the bullet and dragged out the big ladder. That was an ordeal unto itself, but the bulb is now replaced and the ladder back in place. I've been recuperating for the past hour.  The first time I tried it, about two hours, I pulled something in my left leg and as soon as I got off the smaller ladder, I fell straight to the floor. I'm glad I didn't fall off the ladder; that might have been dangerous.

Good late morning, all!

BK, I LOVED seeing the videos, all of them. Great performances by all the girls. Jenna's Dear Mr. Gershwin - is that kid a star or what? And Jane is always amazing.

And I loved hearing the three girls sing Three Friends.

We all survived our first dress rehearsal last night, no thanks to the director. Thankfully, the artisitc director is beginning to sneak his two cents in and it is helping. Now we just have to get rid of the other guy and we can make this into something before it closes.   :D

Interesting.  I'm not going to upgrade, though.  I like what I have and will keep it until it dies...AND it was free.  I got it with points from my debit card.  Free is good!  When I got it, it was called the Kindle 3rd Generation (the hi-def Kindles didn't exist yet), but now it's called the Kindle Keyboard.

Please don't try to do too much.

I picked up a gig doing some sound design for the Indy production of VANYA & SONIA & SASHA & SPIKE...which opens on September 19....  Meeting tomorrow.

Did anyone see it in New York?  I know my friend Bryan who is directing the show did....any thoughts on what kind of music was used?

I love Christopher Durang.

Whew!  I've spent the day, with Richard's help, creating a proposed budget for AAUW.  It's now in the hands of the budget committee, which was supposed to meet at our house the evening that Richard went to the ER.  Oh, well, I guess 3 weeks late is better than never...

And the password is.... Shipoopi!

Best wishes with that, Ryacko.

Thank you, John. G.!

What's always amazing to me in terms of Yacko's story about the director is that there are really good people who never ever get asked to direct anything - these hacks are loved by all the artistic directors or programmers and that's why most LA musical theater is either copies of the B'way stagings or dreck, not necessarily in that order.

All I want to do is take my pain meds and get into bed. This life shouldn't be such an obstacle course. Good night.

What is shocking about this theater is that the artistic director knows better. And this director has no idea how to work on the inner life of the play. All he does is try and control every move and gesture, in an OCD manner, and it has choked the life out of it. The Artistic director is saving it somewhat, but why he continues to use this guy (other than to try and teach him) is beyond me.

And you are right BK, there are so many other truly capable and brilliant people out there not getting one chance to direct at all.

One of my all-time favorite Broadway shows is Baby.  In the Tony Awards, it was up against La Cage aux Folles, if I remember correctly.  (If I don't remember correctly, please correct me.  I wouldn't want to go uncorrected.)

For me, Baby was the clear winner.  La Cage is great and all, but it doesn't quite have the zip that Baby has, for my money.

If there was any show I'd love to see a revival of, it's Baby.

I have a kindle keyboard too and love it.

I certainly listen to Baby more than La Cage or Sunday, which is one of my favorite musicals. For me, Baby's problem was that the book lacked the substance of the score. The jokes were kinda sitcom-y and whenever anyone spoke, I just wanted them to shut up and sing. I learned more about the characters from the songs.

Trust me,  my friend, I understand what you are going through.  I don't know of anything as devastating as back pain.  I pray that your pain will no be as bad, nor last as long as mine.  And I hope I got a smile out of you.

Let it be known that I am not at all angry at Bruce, nor do I think he's a bad person.  I believe the worst I said was "paranoid" and "egotistical".  Well, who among us hasn't been there at least one time or other.  Certainly I have.

But I will also say that what passed between Bruce and I in another forum took me completely by surprise and I reacted in anger and hurt.  I felt the misunderstanding, as it were, had an end result of Bruce not valuing me as a loyal member of his forum.  I was given to believe he considered me a spy reporting back to a former member...a member with whom I've never been in personal contact beyond comments exchanged in this forum prior to that member's departure.

Bruce has allayed those perceptions, I accepted his apology and, here and now, do state for all at HainesHisWay.com that I apologize to him for letting my feelings color my judgment to the point that I posted hurtful comments.

It will take me some time, I think, to feel comfortable enough to return to regular posting.  This is his forum, and he deserves respectful participation by its membership.  I am reading as "guest", and as you all know, I posted my thanks to each of you for the birthday greetings via private message here.

I wish all of you great happiness and peace of mind.

Thank you, Ron - you're a great guy and I'm hoping this is all behind us and you'll come back sooner than later like RIGHT NOW!  You are very much missed, by me, and by everyone else.
