A Very Happy Birthday to DR John G.!! :D

Yesterday was my sister's birthday. This afternoon, the family's getting together to celebrate before Larry and I go to the SnoHomo Ho-Down. My sister is actually going out celebrating with her girlfriends, so we have to have her party in the afternoon anyway.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR John G.!
-
Good morning, all! First thing today, I get to attempt another trip to the pharmacy for this credit I am owed and my mystery I left behind yesterday. After I calmed down yesterday afternoon, I realizes that once my legs gave out, I should have just sat in the pharmacy's waiting area until my body was ready to work again. Instead, I panicked and did no good for anyone. The end of this torment cannot come soon enough.
So, I have DR John G's book, and I forgot to include him in my authors list! I think it's because I've known DR John G for about 30 years, and I still think of him as a newspaper writer, That's not to slight him as a writer, just to point out my sloppy thinking.
So, kudos to all of our HHW authors! I'm a bit jealous that I'm not fulfilling my own ambition to produce something, but I'm pondering DR cillaliz' suggestion to do something while I rot in my apartment. I'm just full of self-pity these days. Oy!
DR TCB, I wish you a great time tonight, and I know your comments will be choice, charming, pointed, and very funny.
DR cillaliz, I am happy your back is doing better. I should have been seeing a chiropractor years ago.

They don't do flu shots here till at least end of November. She's had one every year. So i'm sure the kids will get them this year (since there are so many germs at school/daycare).

Saturday morning greetings! Both football teams I follow are off this week, so my Saturday is free for some AAUW work and some shopping. First up, take some donations over to the AAUW Holiday Bazaar venue. The event isn't until November 8 & 9, but Rose wants to get started on sorting and pricing.

BearManor Media is running a special on my two Hollywood memoirs, MY FORTY-FIVE YEARS IN HOLLYWOOD...AND HOW I ESCAPED ALIVE and the just published LIFE, LIBERTY & THE PURSUIT OF HOLLYWOOD. I know that many people on this board have read MY FORTY-FIVE YEARS, but you haven't read the first book, this is a pretty good bargain.

BK,
Your PSYCHO references brought back memories. I recall seeing the film for the first time at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. During several scenes, my date dug her fingernails into my arm.
I used PSYCHO as an example of three-act structure in my writing class last weekend. Interestingly, one could remove all of Janet Leigh's scenes from the picture; begin it with Vera Miles' search for her sister...and you would still have a viable picture.
Yes, you would have to add a few scenes to the 2nd and 3rd acts, but it would still work, because the basic plot is the search to find Janet Leigh and the stolen money. Janet's scenes are, essentially, prologue to this.
Don't misunderstand. I am not suggesting that anybody tamper with this classic. But, from a strictly structural standpoint, that's how the story breaks down.
-
DR elmore3003, glad that today's trip to the pharmacy went so much better than yesterday - though it is really a crime that they made you make the second trip at all.
Sounds like you are learning some patience. I am sure it isn't easy, but in the long run it will serve you much better.

Car insurance cost increases in the UK have become ridiculous. Renewals keep going up because so many people are making phoney whiplash claims, through encouragement of ambulance-chasing lawers. Received my vehicle insurance renewal notice today which is ridiculously 25% higher than last year so I will be looking for alternative quotes. Same think happened last year and the year before that. It's got so that I have the hassle of changing insurance companies each year.

I saw a reissue of PSYCHO when I was 18 and found it terrifying. I was with my older sister who, having seen it previously when first released a few years earlier, had to walk out for a few minutes during the shower scene - she couldn't bear seeing it again!

Back from delivering my and Mom's donations to this year's AAUW Middletown Holiday Bazaar venue.
In the absence of Michigan football today, I was glad to find this video in my Facebook News Feed:
Michigan Marching Band Drumline (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMGF07A3fTg&feature=youtu.be)
The mellifluous voice doing the narration belongs to Carl Grapentine, a classmate of mine who has been the band announcer for many years and is now also the play-by-play announcer at Michigan Stadium.

I'm still down at the southern part of the Texas coast. Been eating much more than barbecue this trip and having fun with friends.

Yesterday, we watched six or so hummingbirds hovering around a feeder. Got some fairly decent photos, but nothing spectacular.

I'll post a few when things get back to normal and I can go through them all.

Am off now. Hoping to get a little break in before dinner.

From DR Robin:
As a result of a published essay in the book Atheist Voices of Minnesota, I was asked to expand my essay into a full-length autobiography. I told the publisher that I still have a lot of living to do. Ask me again in 20 years. (I think I'll actually be interesting then, LOL.)
Through the book, I have gotten asked to give presentations to atheist/humanist/Unitarian groups, which I'm more than happy to do. I've gotten chances to meet wonderful people, and hopefully, to change a some people's lives for the better.
DR Robin I find this very interesting.

DR TCB, Keith was not in the military-lol.

You are figuring it out, good! Now you need to figure out when to sit before your legs give out.
When we don't feel well and our bodies fail us instinct is to be tough and continue on when instead we should listen to our bodies and rest and not worry what other's think about our actions.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR JOHN G~~~~~~~~~

I'm doing ok today. I think I'll need another adjustment before I go on a day bus trip on Tuesday, but I'm not in pain. I pushed it a bit yesterday and I can tell. So today, after running my errands I am resting in the living room with the windows open and the cool air coming in. It's about time it cooled down a bit. Now if we could just end this drought.

Tonight is Joshua Bell with the Sioux City Symphony. We have an excellent Symphony and I'm really looking forward to the concert tonight. I'll go early for the pre-concert talk by our conductor, then will sit back an enjoy the show.

DR Cilla I'm amazed you had relief from your back pain with one treatment. I did not have good luck with a chiropractor and am impressed it worked at all. I'm glad you are feeling better.

DR Cilla I'm amazed you had relief from your back pain with one treatment. I did not have good luck with a chiropractor and am impressed it worked at all. I'm glad you are feeling better.
I've always had good luck with Chiros, I had whiplash as a kid and the treatment worked. Edith could barely move last year, she didn't want to go to a chiro but when she did, she came back without pain. I think she had one more adjustment and hasn't had the problem again. Chiropractic has always been very big around here, probably in part because Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport is one of the best. My whole family has gone to them for years. Around here the advice is generally go to a doctor and they'll put you on meds, go to a chiropractor and they'll take away your pain. Of course first they do some testing to be sure it isn't something more serious than they can handle
-
Finished the first half of the liner notes and the second half should be quicker.

The I bathed the motor car, which desperately needed it. Then I picked up one package.

I should bathe my motor car. There is so much dust in the air here that last time there was a rain shower, it rained dirt and my car is covered with little mud drops

We got our flu shots early this year. I liked going while the weather was still warm out and I was feeling good. I hate when my allergies are bad and I can't tell if I'm getting sick.

Back from a three-mile jog.

DR Cillaliz - glad your back is better. Have fun at that concert tonight! :)

Got a lot done today! I finally found a source for the pre-mixed Margaritas that I love - very hard to find; I sorted out some technology needs and purchases, including pre-ordering my next smartphone; I bought a new suit which will be ready the day before I fly for an out-of-town wedding in two weeks; I got an insurance application completed and submitted; I learned some music; got some work done; and caught up on my E-mail. AND I took a lovely mid-afternoon nap!

Thanks, DR Jane! I just hope I'll be able to get through my solo in church tomorrow morning - that seems to be when I feel at my worst the past few days.

Go to bed early. If you wake up earlier than usual you will have more time to get your system working.

Wow, what great prices on that underwear!
-
Great thought, DR Jane; I will definitely do that!

I should do it to. Either I have allergies from working in the yard today or I'm fighting something. I'll take a Benadryl tonight.

I gotta tell you.

But I won't.

I'll be leaving to sup in about forty minutes.

congrats to DR Druxy and FJL on their new books.

Larry, as much as I'd love to see you undertake some writing projects, I personally find it very difficult to do creative work when I don't feel good. I've done it, yes, when it had to be done, but it sure isn't easy.
Glad you're learning to deal with these difficulties and it's getting a tad easier.
-
My, Singdaw, you had a productive day. I had a longer than usual to-do list today, and I'm now quite pooped. (Not everything's done, either, but I knew it was too much for one day.)

Cilla, I'd LOVE to hear Joshua Bell! Have a good time!

Thanks DR Jeanne. Fortunately I'm not sick yet and hopefully I won't be sick tomorrow. I need to stay healthy until after Oct. 8th.
-
Thank you, DRs Jeanne and Jennifer. Taking DR Jane's advice and going to bed now.

Sleep well DR Singdaw

Happy B-Day to John G.!
Get well vibes all around.
Today was Movie Day here at Chez Raianiemi. We DVR'ed Un Chien Andalou and World Without End off of TCM.
Michael had never seen either of them. He was rather stunned when the most notorious scene came up, to say the least. I took a little pleasure in seeing him jump. I've seen this short film many times over the years, and I refuse to analyze a frame of it. It is what it is. And you are what you is, according to Frank Zappa.
I'd never seen World Without End. I love 1950's sci-fi. It's probably my favorite flavor of celluloid. But I gotta tell you, while World Without End starts well enough, it quickly descends into boredom. The sets look not unlike the ones they used on the original Star Trek, with all the low-budget cheesiness, but not a whit of Trek's charm. Huge disappointment for me.
Next up was the Twilight time blue ray deeveedee of The Fury. Liked it a lot, actually. I don't think I'd ever seen the film before, but it worked for me. John Williams was obviously told by de Palma to sound as much like Bernard Herrmann as he could. Nice score, nifty movie.
Finally was the blue ray deeveedee of The Hudsucker Proxy, a film by the Coen Brothers. Personally, I loved this movie since I saw it in the theater. It seemed to have been made for my own personal enjoyment, since no one else I know has confessed their love for this picture. (But hey, I loved John Carter, so what the hell do I know?)
-
I just slapped Rising Sun onto my iPod Nano. That should make walking to church tomorrow a noir-ish experience.
-
Oh, and totally by co-inkie-dink, Charles Durning shows up in both The Fury and The Hudsucker Proxy. Maybe tomorrow we should play Tootsie and The Sting, to keep the Durning-ness of it all going.
-
DR Druxy,
Could you explain your method of teaching "storytelling"?
In 10 words or less?

I can get all kinds of margarita mixes, Slumdog, but I have a question. Why would you want them? Here's the recipe for the original margarita and it's still the best:
1 part tequila
1 part triple sec or orange liqueur
1 part freshly squeezed lime juice
Shake with ice. Pour into a margarita glass rimmed with extra salt (the extra salt is my choice). Squeeze a slice of orange or tangelo over the top. Garnish with lime and orange slice.

I want to thank all of you collectively for the birthday wishes. My HHW family is the greatest.

I just watched a terrible movie, THE LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE with Kim Novak and Peter Finch.
The sad thing is that if director Robert Aldrich and his screenwriter had been able to decide on what movie they wanted to make, it could have been pretty good. All the elements were there for a good mystery/thriller.

I am just back from Loew's Jersey (in Jersey City), a 1929 movie palace. Following years of conflicts whenever they happened to be showing something (sadly, that isn't too often), I have finally been able to get my arse to it. Oh my god, if only this place could be completely restored. They saved it from the wrecking ball in 1986 and undid some serious damage (I think it had been split into two screens), and there's much more work to be done. But its opulence is still palpable. If the camera gods were good to me, I got some pictures that won't be too shaky for low-light shooting, and I'll post a few tomorrow.
The movies were DUEL (gripping, as always, and wonderful seen "theatrically") and BULLITT. All 35mm, and unfortunately the projection here is hit and miss. Nevertheless, it was a fine evening of movie watching.
Something about the layout or the general feel of this place made me think most of the Hollywood Pacific, which I believe BK and others would have known as the Warner Cinerama.
-
Happy Birthday

Today was Day One of what they are predicting as the Weather Weekend from Hell. This was supposed to be the weaker of the two storms. If this was weaker, tomorrow afternoon and evening should be pretty bad.
-
I received a lot of really wonderful comments about my little talk. This one woman came up to me and said that she and her husband had been coming to TLT. She said they always checked to see if I was going to be in the production, because if I was; they knew that it was going to be good.
-
Another man came up and said that he and his wife had been coming about the time I started back in 1956, and they said they were very big fans.
-
Those kinds of comments made me glad that I did the Gala. I was in a lot of pain by the time I left, but I felt like it was worth it.

Page Seven!!
-
And I may have an announcement by the end of the week.
-
By the way, George, Pug and Chris were your two friends that I mentioned who were there tonight.
-
And I am sure you will all want to set your DVR's to catch the Seattle Seahawks game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., Eastern; 10:00 a.m., Pacific. They are playing Houston. If they should manage to win, they would have a starting record of 4 - 0.

My coach is turning into a pumpkin.
G'night!

Yesterday was my sister's birthday. This afternoon, the family's getting together to celebrate before Larry and I go to the SnoHomo Ho-Down. My sister is actually going out celebrating with her girlfriends, so we have to have her party in the afternoon anyway.
Well, the SnoHomo Ho-Down was pretty darned fun. It was bingo with a very gay twist. A four-"man" off-shoot of the Seattle Men's Chorus called ETHEL were the emcees and bingo callers. There were several very nice raffle items. I bought a bunch of tickets, but didn't win anything. There was a lot of rain on the way up to Everett (which is about 85 miles north of Olympia), but otherwise the traffic wasn't bad. We made pretty good time.
-
The weather on the way home afterward was much better. It only rained for a few minutes. We did see some far away lightning strikes, though. The big room where it was held was pretty full. Evidently, a lot of people like bingo in Everett...or they just wanted to support a couple of good causes, which I forget because I left my program in my car.

Finally home from a fairly excruciating production of Little Shop of Horrors. Must write notes now and get to bed.
-
Tomorrow, I start running sound for Olympia Family Theater's production of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe." They're performing in the Black Box (officially called "Stage II") at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, which is being renovated. I got an e-mail from the stage manager today (finally) and in it she said that the front is temporarily blocked off. We all have to enter from the back stage door.
-
It's going to be a long day. Rehearsal is scheduled from 2 until 8 pm! I'm sure that there will be plenty of time for breaks and I also remember in past shows that food is (or at least, snacks are) brought in for everyone. That's always nice. :) It'll be a long day, but I'm sure that it'll be a lot of fun.
-
I had been asked to run the sound quite a while ago and have been waiting to hear about when I would need to be at tomorrow's rehearsal. I called Sarah the stage manager yesterday and she finally called me back this morning. She said that she's been sending e-mails for the last few weeks and didn't realize that I hadn't been getting them! She also said that she never got any e-mails bounced back as wrong, so she's been sending a complete stranger all her stage manager e-mails! She told me what she had and it definitely was incorrect. She sent an e-mail today that I actually got, so it's all straightened out. I just wonder what the stranger who's been getting all these e-mails thinks...and if he/she will miss them. ;)
-
And now, I must ketchup on all the posts.
-
Oh...here's my sister's birthday cake. You can't really tell, but it's two layers and was absolutely delicious!

(It was not vegan...and she didn't mind.)

A less than 4 minute mini-documentary on the IMAX/3-D Wizard of Oz:

That's great, Tom! Congrats!

Cool! Did you speak with them? Have you ever met Pug?
-
Thank you, dear DR TCB! :)
-
DR TCB, glad that last night's event went so well, as we all knew it would. Sorry about the pain you felt, but thrilled that so many people were able to express their appreciation for you so directly! That must have felt great.
-
Thanks for the recipe, DR John G. Will have to give that a try.
I agree, most of the pre-mixed varieties are inferior. I had tried the Cayman Jack brand, and found it sweeter, fresher, and quite delightful.

Got them!

And speaking of sweet, thanks for that Joshua Bell sound clip, DR Cillaliz! :)

I wonder if "Pug" is a family name that stuck. :)
-
I am up. Not feeling 100%. A few hours will tell how the congestion and plugged nose will affect my resonance.
-
I wonder if "Pug" is a family name that stuck. :)
Yes...there's a story behind it. Her real name is Charlene, but for some reason (I forget the story) her dad started calling her Pug and it just stuck. She said that she never felt like a "Charlene" and I've never known her as anything other than Pug. She's thought about legally changing it, but that takes money, and as a starving artist, she has almost none.
