Title: THE SORRY STATE OF THEATER AUDIENCES
Post by: bk on October 03, 2013, 12:21:42 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes ruminated on the sorry state of theater audiences, and now it is time for you to post until the sorry state of cows come home.

Here's the full new release information.

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition release – a 2-CD set for a 1-CD price – the world premiere release of:

ALIEN NATION

Composed by Curt Sobel

and a reissue of

ALIEN NATION – THE UNUSED SCORE

Composed by Jerry Goldsmith

Some ideas seem like naturals – and the idea for Alien Nation was definitely a natural – aliens (Newcomers) land on Earth (in Los Angeles, naturally), and are being integrated into the population of the city, which makes the population of the city a little uneasy.  It’s not that far-fetched, really, if you think about it.  Directed by Graham Baker, produced by Gale Anne Hurd, with a script by Rockne S. O’Bannon, Alien Nation starred James Caan as a police detective and Mandy Patinkin as the first Newcomer to become a detective.  So, we have a sci-fi film cross-pollinated with a buddy cop film and it was a surprisingly good fit and was a hit, spawning a sequel and a TV series.

The legendary Jerry Goldsmith was hired to provide the score for Alien Nation.  As he’d already done a handful of times before, he wrote an electronic score.  It was a dynamic synth score, but when the film underwent considerable reediting, Goldsmith was either busy with other things or disinclined to revise what he’d written.  Rather than chop it up and try to make it fit the new, leaner version of the film, his score was discarded and composer Curt Sobel was brought in to compose a new one.

The differences between the scores are fascinating.  First of all, Curt Sobel’s score fits the finished film like a glove.  It’s occasionally heavier on the atmosphere than the Goldsmith score, playing up the noir-ish aspects of the story (especially the main title), but still with the requisite action cues.  It, like the Goldsmith score, is mostly electronic.   Goldsmith’s score is very propulsive, and it has a great and memorable theme – that theme was originally written for but not used in Oliver Stone’s film, Wall Street.  When the Alien Nation score was discarded, Goldsmith recycled the theme one more time and the third time was the charm – for the film The Russia House.

The Jerry Goldsmith score was originally released by Varese Sarabande as a limited edition, which has been out of print for a while now.  While Goldsmith was praised in the liner notes for that release, both film and Curt Sobel were given short shrift, which is a little unfair.  The film is extremely entertaining, and Mr. Sobel, given a time-sensitive and difficult assignment, delivered what he was asked to deliver – a dynamic, propulsive and occasionally moody score that works for the film  The scores are, as noted, very different, but both work well on their own terms.  The Curt Sobel score has never been issued on CD – this is the world premiere release and it’s nice to have both Alien Nation scores available in one package.  Sobel prepared an album master back in the day, and that is what we used for this CD.   The Goldsmith score is basically the same as the Varese, although certain dropouts and other anomalies have been fixed.

Alien Nation is limited to 1200 copies only and the 2-CD set is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE TO ORDER ALIEN NATION WILL RECEIVE A BOOKLET SIGNED BY COMPOSER CURT SOBEL.  WE GO IN STRICT ORDER RECEIVED AND ONCE THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED ORDERS COME IN, THAT’S ALL SHE WROTE.   WE CANNOT GUARANTEE YOU A SIGNED BOOKLET UNLESS YOU ARE ONE OF THE FIRST 100.  ONE SIGNED BOOKLET PER CUSTOMER.

CDs are in stock and will ship the day after the announcement. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

TOD: I don't go to live theatre much anymore, but the kind of behavior described by bk would bother me. I gave up on movies a long time ago. The last movie I tried to see in a theatre was The Queen with Helen Mirren. A fight broke out between two audience members in a far-way section which resulted in the first 10 minutes or so of the movie being drowned out by yelling as more and more people were dragged into the conflict. The management refused to start the movie over, despite much pleading. People behave like they're in their own living room; everyone else be damned. Very sad.

FROM YESTERDAY

DR ELMOORE pointed out the corrected lyrics to I Hear Bells by Shire/Maltby. I should have mentioned that I did change the lyric from summer to autumn because BK heard his bells in autumn.

Larry would probably have been the only one to have caught that LOL. And I did listen to that recording "Love Lives On" to transcribe the lyrics!!

Was that one of the songs you orchestrated?

Theatre audiences behave like pigs these days:
   1.  I sat in the balcony for a Saturday night perfprmance of RENT and directly in front of me three young 20-ish ladies from Larchmont or New Rochelle or another suburb who had been shopping all day arrived with their bags crinkling and making noise, while during every blackout these idiots would check their cell phones for texts. Do you have any idea how bright phone lights are in a blackout?  Everyone's eyes went from the stage to these three idiots. Oh, and they .talked to each other as well.  I have no idea why they went to a show.

  2.  I saw WHITE CHRISTMAS from house seats at $125 a pop. The four seats in the aisle in front of me were empty and I said to my friend Chris, watch; they'll be late.  They were 40 minutes late! An older couple and a young couple. The older woman took a seat, next was the young lady, then the young man, and then the older man.  There was about 20 minutes left in the first act and the young couple made out, as though they were in a drive in movie.  and behind me? Four teens with cups of soda and candy, so it was the constant sound of candy wrappers, slurping, and crunching of ice.

I find the whole audience thing depressing and demoralizing.  Not to put too fine a point on it.

These characteristics and practices now permeate every performance venue, from professional to rank amateur.  Well, maybe not every single one, but certainly throughout the kinds we're usually talking about here.

While driving to NJ the other day, I was listening to whichever one of those public radio game shows was on WNYC ("Wait Wait", maybe, but I think it was something else).  As every correct answer was given (and those were plentiful, because they were easy questions -- hell, even I coulda won something), a group of whoopers whooped along with the applause at every applause point.  It was sickening.

The whooping and hollering has been around awhile....I first remember it during a show called Star Search, where the contests had 45 seconds to do their acts.....at exactly 30 seconds in, all of the singers would start their  riffs and screaming and the audience would do the same....

I do not like attending musical theatre for all of the reasons MR BK and others have discussed today.  It is a disservice to the performers.  I stopped attending the local Broadway series when they began allowing beer, other drinks, and food into the theater....UGH.

I don't go to the theatre for a few months and then I go 2 nights in one week. Sunday night I'm seeing

Fun Home (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fun_Home)

a new musical at The Public. I just finished the book last week and I'm curious how this will work out. I really like Michael Cerveris and Judy Kuhn.

Fun Home Playbill (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/180929-Michael-Cerveris-Judy-Kuhn-Alexandra-Socha-Among-Cast-of-Fun-Home-Other-Public-Theater-Casting-Announced-Too)

I wasn't planning on seeing the show because the cheapest ticket price is $80 (it's OFF-BROADWAY) but it's just shown up on TDF for $29 ($33 w/the service charge) so I'm going.

I haven't been going to as much theatre this year because the prices are so outrageous and many of the shows I want to see don't appear on TDF, but that's a rant for another time.

Hello Everyone:

TOD:

It wasn't a musical, but a Neil Diamond Concert.

I was sitting in front of a woman who was screaming throughout the concert at the top of her lungs.

Everyone around me was annoyed, but didn't say anything.  I finally told her to stop, and she said, no, I can scream if I want to.

Finally my friend who was seated directly in front of me, turned around and screamed
"Shut Up".

She finally did.

It really ruined the concert for so many.  I was afraid for the rest of the concert she was going to attack me from behind, so I couldn't wait to leave!

No, I didn't speak about Big Fish.

I really liked it. Kate Baldwin is gorgeous and sings like a dream. Norbert Leo Butz will at least be nominated for a Tony (in my humble opinion) in May. Bobby Steggert is also excellent. Susan Stroman does great things with projections and there is real choreography in the show, not just gymnastics (I don't object to gymnastics but when you call it choreography in a Broadway musical I have a problem with it). I wish Brad Oscar had more to do and it's a bit long but otherwise I thought it was wonderful. I now want to see the movie and possibly even read the book.

This Sunday I will be taking my grandniece Taylor to the Broadway tour of ANYTHING GOES. I have no doubt that it will be great fun. And we will not be unruly.

Do you know, Brad, Ben?  He is a good friend of my friends Sharry and Micheal.

Maybe BK can write something where an unruly audience gets its collective comeuppance but good. ;)

I got home from therapy and found 17 copies of DEAREST ENEMY sitting on my doorstep. It's sounding mighty good!

And Rob Berman called. He and Joshie are on their way over to visit.

That is so exciting!  Do you have a release date yet?

Got about another ninety minutes of sleep, so maybe I slept three hours total.  I had a couple of really good telephonic calls this morning, and then I printed out orders, after which I had the lunch - I had something I never have but really like - a bowl of chili with onions.  It was great, actually and not very large either.  I then picked up a couple of packages, after which I came home.  I'll jog in forty minutes or so.

A neat HHW shortcut I just discovered by accident. Maybe everyone else already knew this, but I didn't:

When you're on the "Daily Discussions" (index) page, and you see a daily topic with the page numbers   (1, 2, 3 ... 7) -  well, I often want to go to the page NEXT to the last page. If you click on the three dots, all the missing pages come into view for selection!    :)

It's time to head to the theater!  Tonight, we have an invited audience for our dress rehearsal.  David, the sound designer, has practically (but not actually) promised that all the sound cues would be done for tonight's performance.  We'll see if they are.  If not, only a couple of things weren't done for last night's run, so no one would really be able to tell what's not there.  And he said that he wanted to embellish some existing cues, so those already do exist, but will just be added to.

Be back later!

I find the audience to be better behaved at the local theater rather than the touring shows. Of course, the local theater is mostly old people in the audience.

That is, also, true in Tacoma community theater.

I have always liked Michael J. Fox, and I admire him a great deal, but, so far, his new show just isn't jelling.  The characters don't seem to be the members of the same family.  Maybe that will come in time.  Since the show is on NBC, maybe they will get a little more time to work out the kinks.

Tonight's final dress went very well.  We had about 10 people in the audience (including the director and fight choreographer), but they enjoyed it.  The sound cues were all there and they sounded very good.  The only issues were of volume...a couple were not loud enough and one had to be turned down a bit...and one cue had to have a repeat added.  That was it.  Everything else technical went quite well.  Now, we open tomorrow!

There was another show several years ago about the exact same thing.  It didn't last very long at all, either.  A bunch of people won a group lottery and problems ensued...how long can that kind of concept go on?  It would be fine as a mini-series or one summer series, at the most, but I can't imagine that a full, potentially open-ended series could keep anyone interested, no matter how well it's done.

Just my 2˘.
