Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Kritzerland at Sterling's 38, and now it is time for you to post until the 38 cows come home.

Good morning, all!  I finally had a good night of sleep and I really needed it. Today, I will have my super and a plumber running in and out of the apartment. There's a leak coming from one of the five C apartments  in the building and, once again, they're trying to find it. This occurred last year as well, and I believe it will be futile since the neighbor below me, after a week's advance notice, doesn't seem to be around.

BK, good news about last night's concert!  I'm happy it went well.

I'm hoping we'll get some word from DR KevinH about last night's Kurt Weill event at Symphony Space.

Back after a few days away. Been quite ill trying not ending up in the hospital. Been battling 101 degree fever that finally went down last night with a respiratory infection and flu that is classified as contagious. I have not been to work for the past three days (which is rare for me to take sick days) I've not been able to sleep at nights and peeing way too many times a day. As of this morning i'm better but far from 100%.

Greetings from Amtrak Train 141, now  "Way out West in Jersey."  That's the title of a song from last night's Kurt Weill concert.
Title: Re: KRITZERLAND AT STERLING'S 38
Post by: KevinH on October 08, 2013, 07:25:24 AM
Speaking of the show, I enjoyed it very much.  The highlights for me were:  "I'm a Stranger Here Myself, " sung by Melissa Errico;  "The Trouble with Women" and
"Way Out West in Jersey" (Kurt Weill Foundation Competition Winners); Speak Low (Ms. Errico and Brent Barrett); "Wouldn't YOu Like to Be On Broadway" (Brent); "It Never Was You" (Melissa and Brent); "Mr. Right" (Judy Blazer); and the finale, "Here I'll Stay" (entire cast).  I guess "Surabaya Johnny" is a well-known song (not to me) and it was well sung by Melissa, but I found it very strange!

They showed clips of Mary Martin in the Broadway production (no sound) and clips of Weill's wife, Lotte Lenya, being interviewed about 20 years ago.  I saw Richard Jay-Alexander, who directed this show as well as Ms. Streisand's.  And I chatted with Mr. Barrett for a few minutes.

Oh, I almost forgot.  There was a song called "I Remember It Well," with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Weill.  The evening's host explained that Lerner simply used the same title for Gigi, but with completely different lyrics (and music, of course).  But the song is structured (not sure if that's the best word) the same as the one from Gigi.  The man says something, the woman corrects him and he says "I Remember It Well."  Who knew?  Well, probably some our our HHW members already knew all this!

The super and plumber have been here and gone; the leak appears to be in the pipe abve the building's old incinerator and not coming from an apartment.

I've finished my essay on the GOLDEN APPLE score for the Moross site and sent it off for review.

My breakfast visit with Bollywood and Punjabi (Pollywood) film actor, Aman Dhaliwal, on Saturday was wonderful. Such a nice guy and it was great to meet him in person. His cousin Davinder is also a great guy.

Aman brought me some nice gifts including the soundtrack CD to his latest movie and a book on Sikh history, which is a subject he knows I am quite interested in. And he autographed a photo for me.

They are both in Sacramento now, and will be heading to Los Angeles soon. I am so very glad that they were able to stop and visit with me during their motor trip!

I took my camera, but unfortunately forgot to make sure the SD card was in it  :P

...but, Davinder took several photos and he has promised to forward them to me. If and when he does, I will post them.

Even though I read a lot I'm not usually a big book recommender.  Unless I know a person loves a certain genre.

Here is a genre that I am sure most people on HHW will not have read before (and maybe not even heard of). It's called NA (New Adult).  It has gotten really popular in the last year or two.  It has characters that are 18-25. And has more mature subjects than YA.

There is one author in this genre who has blown me away. Her name is Colleen Hoover.  It is pretty rare for me to give almost all of an author's books 5 stars.  But I gave four of her five books 5 stars (the last one i gave 4 stars but only because it was mostly the same story but told from another character's POV).

I don't know that this genre will be for most HHWers (probably more geared to 20-40 year old women).  But read the blurbs for the books and judge for yourself.  These books are basically contemporary romance but with lots of emotional/serious issues.

TOD:  I know my literary tastes pretty well, so I rarely read books I wouldn't recommend.

The only one I can think of is a tawdry piece of trash called DAMN YOU, SCARLET O'HARA, which purports to be about the secret life of Olivier and Vivien Leigh and basically suggests that the two were rampantly bi-sexual, as was everyone else in Hollywood, and everyone they encountered there or in England, regardless of sex, they slept with....Of course with no real supporting evidence other than dubious, smarmy innuendo.  This seems to be the entire agenda of the scummy publishing house, Blood Moon, that put it out...All their books seem to be show biz bios concluding that everyone in Hollywood was either homosexual or bi-sexual and pretty much screwed anything that moved.  I'd say avoid everything this slimy house publishes unless you like reading a lot of salacious lies posing as non-fiction.

I recently read the new bio, OLIVIER, by Philip Ziegler, which I enjoyed, and I devoured Bernard Cornwell's latest 300-page historical epic in his Warlord series, THE PAGAN LORD, in less than two days and found it excellent.  I also like his series about the Hundred Years War.  I'm looking forward to getting STAGE BLOOD by Michael Blakemore about his years at the National Theatre.

I'm up, I'm up - I think I got seven hours of sleep - need more.  I would have had more if I hadn't gotten a really irritating e-mail from a customer who got the wrong CD.  He ordered Carnival and got Camelot - the helper obviously grabbed the wrong title - both are one-word titles, both begin with C, so it's not not understandable in a way.  Anyway, this guy's e-mail was so attitude-laden it was oozing like an open sore.  So, I wrote him back and said that it wasn't a conspiracy theory against him, just simple pilot error.  I said to keep the Camelot with our compliments and that we'd send Carnival right out.

Then I read his e-mail again and it just rankled me so much that I wrote him another e-mail that basically said, in a nice way, that sometimes it's good to read an e-mail before clicking "send" and think how it might come off to those who will be reading it.  I then went on and said that his e-mail was larded with attitude, whether intended or not and made it seem like we'd committed some heinous crime against humanity.  I closed with "I'm sure worse has happened to you in your life. Perspective is everything."  He then wrote me two vicious e-mails in a row, filled with profanity, telling me he was the CUSTOMER and how dare I send such an e-mail.  Let me tell you dare - write an obnoxious e-mail and I'll dare every time because CUSTOMERS like that I don't need, nor does any business.  He was like a screaming out-of-control eight-year-old - I'm not kidding.  I'm tempted to just post the e-mails.  I'd already refunded him his money as I had no intention of sending anything else to him.  I repeated what I said about his initial e-mail and added, what are you, eight with these threats.  And yes, he was saying he'd come to LA and beat me up because he's 6'5 - I'm not making this up.  Of course, he didn't know who was was conversing with and for all he knows I might have been the helper.  The profanity was breathtaking in its inanity.  He wrote two subsequent e-mails, both worse, these basically saying if I wasn't the owner that my ass was toast (I'm not making this up), again saying he'd beat whoever he was conversing with to a pulp and then saying how he was going to send an e-mail blast to all his Broadway friends and friends in national tours telling them how awful we are and that that would teach us.

At that point, I had two choices - really go to the bad BK place that only few have seen, or to, for the first time in all of the years I've been on the Internet, block someone from e-mailing me.  I chose the latter as it was easiest and I was tired and needed sleep.  I will wait with some excitement to hear from all his Broadway friends and friends on national tours to e-mail me.  I think I'll be waiting until the Twelfth of Never, but should anyone write me, my guess is he will have sent them HIS version of these events without telling them about these four childish and completely out of line e-mails - at which point I will be more than happy to forward the entire conversation to them.  :)

How stupid is someone to send actual e-mail threats of violence in this day and age?  And that is why I lost one of my eight hours of sleep.  Dealing with a complete moron - from Louisiana, and that's all I need to say about THAT.

Get Well Wishes to DR Mike!

Good morning.  Congrats to bk and the rest for a great show last night.  I've ordered Dearest Enemy from Amazon as opposed to downloading it from iTunes because from what I can see, iTunes isn't offering a digital booklet.

DR Matthew, you could have downloaded the booklet from the New World records site as well as the recording.

Larry, good news about the good sleep!  And Good Luck with the finding of the leak!

Happy Tuesday, all!

After a very busy morning, I had to drop in and say what a gorgeous Kritzerland show it was last night. I love Maltby and Shire's material to begin with, but the show was put together so beautifully, the performers perfect for the songs, some wonderful hilarious patter by BK, and too many shining moments to name them all.

Two of the most moving moments were Will Collyer's rendition of "When I Sing", and when Ashley Linton Fox closed the show with "The Story Goes On", a man at my table was weeping from the power of the song's message and the perfect delivery.

Bravo on a great show, BK!

That's great, Mike (about the interview, not the SD card).  One time, a friend and I took a road trip to visit some friends doing summer stock at Weber State University in Utah.  We were there for five days and I was taking pictures all the time.  When we left, we spent a night in Reno, Nevada.  I wanted to finish off the roll of film (this was in the mid-1990s, when film photography still existed) and it wasn't until then that I realized that I had no film in my camera!  I was taking pictures for A WHOLE WEEK without realizing that there was no film. :P SPOO!!

In my old camera if you didn't have the SD card in it, the picture went to the camera's hard drive (of whatever it is called in a camera).

I don't know if it does that with my current camera or not. I could find no choice of selection between SD card and hard drive (or whatever it is called in a camera). It is odd that the camera seemed to snap the photos with no warning about the card not being there. It was when we went to look at the photos on the little screen that it kept flashing "no sd card"

The digital camera that I now have can't take any pictures without a separate SD card.  It has no internal memory, at all.  You have to supply your own.

My eBook library doesn't have any of Hoover's books.

Doesn't YA also cover those ages?  Is NA a different style or considered more mature?  THE BOOK THIEF which is one of the rare books I've give 5 stars to was published in the States as YA and as a regular adult book in Australia where it was originally published.  I'm curious if it would be called NA today.

DR Jane, you will be pleased to know that when niece Taylor and I went to see ANYTHING GOES on Sunday, we only got lost once.

It seems we got onto the Sunset Hwy alright, but headed west instead of east, towards downtown Portland. Heck, we were half way to the coast before Taylor suggested that maybe I was going the wrong way. ...she then whipped out her cell phone, hit the GPS button and directed me the rest of the way till we got to the theatre. 10 year olds are very smart.

As I have lived and driven in this area for 30 years, one would think I would be able to find my way around by now.

I'm glad you had a nice visit.  Will you be writing an article?

His interview was posted on www.pedrotheapebomb.wordpress.com. As he has more films released (he has signed for to that film in January and April, respectively) I told him I'd be more than happy to do another interview or something to promote this films.

Interesting article, especially how is career got started.  He seems like a good person and I hope he accomplishes his dream of a cancer hospital.

As I have lived and driven in this area for 30 years, one would think I would be able to find my way around by now.

;D

Only once because of Taylor's skills ;)

For my birthday, somebody gave me an old tequila cask. I've just put up my first cocktail to age 28 days. Something called a Seaway with tequila, Cherry Heering and a coastal scotch.

Now, I just have to find a reason for a party in a month.

Headline on my local paper:

'Wild' movie starring Reese Witherspoon will film in Ashland - 4:30 pm
Local hippies, punk rockers and grunge fans stuck in the '90s could get a shot at the big screen during the filming of "Wild" later this month in Ashland.

TOD:

Even though I read a lot I'm not usually a big book recommender.  Unless I know a person loves a certain genre.

Here is a genre that I am sure most people on HHW will not have read before (and maybe not even heard of). It's called NA (New Adult).  It has gotten really popular in the last year or two.  It has characters that are 18-25. And has more mature subjects than YA.

There is one author in this genre who has blown me away. Her name is Colleen Hoover.

In Young Adult (YA) the narrator is usually 16-18. There would not be graphic sexual content.

In New Adult the narrator is 18-25. Sometimes the person could be in college.  A lot of NA seems to be contemporary romance. And there can be more graphic sexual content than you would see in YA.  Also in NA there can be more mature subjects.

I haven't read The Book Thief, but I'm guessing that it has very mature subjects. But that the girl is very young and that is why some are rating it as a YA.  I don't think this book would really fit into typical YA or NA.

Reading "Amigoland," a novel, and recently read "Brownsville," a book of short stories, both about South Texas and both by Oscar Caceres. Would recommend them highly.

Lots of barbecue books, which are only for die-hards like me.

Had to read Paul Smith's "Lead with a Story: A Guide to Crafting Business Narratives That Captivate, Convince and Inspire" for work. If you need that for business, it was quite good. But I think the actors in our midst know its message in their bones.

Working in a library, I've never heard of "NA (New Adult)" as a new designation.  Cynical me thinks that it's only a new marketing ploy...not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

It's only become very popular recently. But it wouldn't have its own section at the library. The books are mostly contemporary romance.  But I think it is a very valid category. It truly does bridge the gap between YA and Adult.

Just curious, does it matter that it's part of the curricula in ninth and tenth grades across the country? I mean I would never consider To Kill a Mockingbird YA but I read it in ninth grade.

We also read both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story, but neither is YA though the characters are the right age.

Be back later!

TCB: Congratulations on your casting as Mr. Potter.

That set me to wondering, however.  Would you ever be averse to auditioning for Madame Armfeldt in "A Little Night Music"?

And, if cast, would you shave?

Well they just cast a production yesterday, but my friend Sharry snatched up that role.  Of course I would have shaved if requested.

And I didn't know this before, but apparently it's my Oswald picture.  Can't tell what I was holding, but check out those shadows - on the grass and under the nose!

How ironic.  I have just started reading my first JFK cover up book in the past thirty to thirty five years.  It is called (I think) IT'S TIME FOR THE TRUTH: THE JFK COVER UP, THE TRUE CRIME OF THE CENTURY.  And yes, the book is longer than the title.  I saw someone mention this book while I was surfing the net one day, and I thought What the Hell!  I am just starting the book but so far the author is a little less hyper than the usual suspects.  I will say that he has a whole slew of things to say about the autopsy that I have not read about before.  I will let you know when he starts naming names.

The Sankey's aren't Jewish though the two cousins that left England for the States both married Jewish men.

Well then, I hope the cousins were women!
