Title: OVERTIRED
Post by: bk on August 14, 2004, 12:04:59 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have awakened in you something long dormant, and now it is time to post until the overtired cows come home.  To it, I say.

The most  glorious gala I ever attended was the Grand Ball that my father, Czar Nicholas, held in honor of... Ooops. I'm thinking I'm Anastasia again.

Off to bed. I'll think of gala events tomorrow (today).

For those who missed my late night post... I attended WHAT IF? again tonight and enjoyed it even more the second time. This time I could sit back and enjoy without opening night jitters. Despite the few glitches bk discussed, the show was wonderful.

Hmm... Galas... Since my father used to work under the Secretary of Transportation, we sometimes went to various galas and black tie events... However, nothing specific comes to mind right now.  Heck, I never even went to any of my high school proms.

Well, BK's mention of being overtired has brought out the overtired in me too, so...

Goodnight (again).

Galas, huh?

Hmmmmmmmm....

Does a Super Bowl count?  I went to the Super Bowl in which Baltimore beat the Dallas Cowboys...it was in 1971.  The circumstances behind it were like a dream...but I was friends with this guy from Baltimore who was in the Navy with me and in school at Bainbridge MD with me...and his family was wealthy and flew us to Miami for the event for which they had a few tickets to spare...and we were back in time for us to get back to the school.

Did I mention they were wealthy?  We flew in their private jet.

Darn!  Sure wish I hadn't lost touch.

:)

But what the hey!  Sometimes I am my own GALA event!  Nobody does it like me (oh, a "Seesaw" reference).

So why am I up and about at 3:11 a.m.

Couldn't say really.  It might have been because of the nap I took in my chair earlier in the evening.

For some reason, though, I feel wired.  And only marginally tired.

I'm glad to read that things are going well with the revue...even if BK found the second act a bit off tonight, I'm guessing most of the audience, if not the critics, will not have been bothered by the gaffe BK mentioned.

I sure wish I could see it.  I could use some good, live entertainment, and this sounds like the ticket.

I don't suppose it's something you'll consider bringing to San Francisco.....??????????????    ;D

So DRJANE is in the fastlane in a BUS!   8)  And I thought the pictures were great, too, DRJANE (and Keith)....such a beautiful country.  You knever know where you are going to go when you get to HHW!

DR MS - was the Michael Shelton in your TAKE ME OUT a tall black guy who was on ALLY MCBEAL a couple of times?

Actors who change things?  Oh my...well...did he think he had a better idea?   I am also one of those as a director OR performer who want to do it the way it works!  Ya know, once the rehearsals are over, the experimenting is done...you can make a "few" improvements, I wonder if the actor told the others onstage what he was going to do?

Actors who won't go out after the show with the director?  Hmmmmmm.....What If? another show comes along?  ::)

DRJOSE Phil Crosby is very good looking, and his little combo is terrific.  I think he was a little flat here and there though, as other DR's have pointed out, but after hearing tons of CD's of engineered "perfection" it's sometimes nice to hear a real performance, bolts and jolts and all.

Saturday!  And the photos from Florida are pretty drastic.  I hope we hear from our Florida contingent in short order!  :-\

DRJAY you are correct in saying 2 minutes of Opening Ceremony and 4 minutes of commercials...and I can see that the Olympics is just an excuse for LOTS of promos for NBC's new season, which looks really sad!

That said - I DID really like the floats that showed the history of Greece....the costumes and staging was very imaginative....and the 5-story face that broke apart was very impressive.  All in all, a nice presentation!  ;D

Here is a photo from Port Charles, Florida.

Morning folks.  I've only been up a little while but had to turn the TV on to see about Charlie.  My Lord, you wouldn't believe some of the pictures they are showing.

Sadly, there is a mobile home park that had people who refused to leave when they were told and now they are all dead.  As the News reporter said, "They paid for their decision with their lives."  They said the hundreds (yes, hundreds) of people are missing, presumed dead.

It’s hard to believe that it is already almost up to South Carolina.

I feel so lucky that it passed by us.  I hope everyone else on the board from Florida are alright.  This was a horrible, horrible storm--It's being compared to an Andrew.

I need a cup of hot tea so I have to go but I’ll be back later.

Hmmmmm everyone is still asleep!

BLACK SUNDAY was on A/E, so I decided to watch my DVD.  Interesting movie.

I think I may buy THE BAD SEED, I have the video, but I would like to hear Patty's commentary.  And Nancy Kelly does indeed eat the Warner Bros. scenery dept. out of house and home.  No need to strike that set, there was nothing left.

Will have to listen for Henry on the radio!  MR BK says that Miss Heckart is not exactly a screen actress, and here she is certainly given her stage performance, but she did a nice movie job in BUS STOP that same year as Marilyn's friend....I love the scene in the dressing room when Marilyn is showing her the map....

Heckart:  What happens in Hollywood?

Marilyn:  What happens?!!  Honey, you get tested with options and everything....and ya get treated with a little respect!

Well. I am up and dressed after a few hours sleep.

We shall see how this day turns out.

Oh!  Yes!

We shall see!

I had a cryptic note Thursday from a friend who lives in Sarasota FL.

He said, "We're moving.  A hurricane is coming.  My mother is here.  I'll write more when things have settled."

I simply had NO idea how to respond.  Three great anxieties taking place simultaneously.

I'm very grateful Sarasota was spared the fury of Charlie.

Biggest gala event I ever attended was the Carolinas' premiere of STAR! in December 1968. Yep, black tie event with a champagne cocktail reception. I don't think there were any high level Fox executives there (by then I suspect it was already clear to them the movie was going to be a disappointment; numbers had already been cut including "My Ship" and the dialogue portions of the "Red Peppers" sequence), but it was a gala event nonetheless, and I did get a souvenir book and a "Playbill" like program for the film which are undoubtedly collectibles now.

I agree completely with BK about Nancy Kelly's stagy and stiff but overstated film performance in THE BAD SEED, but I disagree violently about Eileen Heckart. I've always thought she was wonderful in everything I've seen her in on stage or screen, and my favorite Heckart performance was in UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE where she plays Henrietta Pastorfield, the "hip" teacher with a crush on a star student whom she finds making out with the school slut in a utility closet in the school. That was one of my favorite books growing up (must have read it 20 times since I wanted to be a teacher), and she was exactly as I had pictured Henrietta from my reading.

Even though Warner Bros. was a guiding force in the DVD movement from the beginning, their record of full frame transfers is pretty disgraceful, so finding out they had full framed THE BAD SEED wasn't particularly surprising.

I know they went back and did right by BONNIE & CLYDE after its initial full frame release, but there are still quite a few quality features they have only out in full frame.

We've been "enjoying" the outlying proof of Charley's strength all morning with a very rainy and exceptionally cool climate. The high today here is only going to 72, about 20 degrees below normal for this time of year. Wild!

After living through the Category 4 Hurricane Hugo in 1989, my heart goes out to all who experienced Charley's wrath over the past day or two.

The most glamorous event I've ever been to was in 1985, when AIDS Project Los Angeles held its first gala fundraising dinner event at the Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.  It was the first large demonstration of support by "The Industry" in the fight against the disease, which at the time carried considerable stigma.

One could not fall down at this event without hitting a celebrity.  Mizz Liz and Dear Abby were two of my favorite sightings that evening.  Ricardo Montalban asked me if I had a light for the cigarette the woman he was with wanted to smoke.  I did and I lit it for her.  At the end of the evening, I waited for my car to be returned from the valet along with Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas and.......wait for it......Cher.

Bob Mackie was too overworked to accept my commission for a little something for that evening, so I was decked out in a rented tuxedo.

Unlike some of you, I will probably not watch one second of the Olympics (really despise the tally board where countries are seemingly in competition for medals instead of celebrating athletic prowess regardless of nationality). I'll just keep up with it in the newspaper and give the time over to watching DVDs.

Good morning, all!  I've been listening to DRBen's "Ben from New York" radio reviews for Beverly Humphreys' "Showtime."  He lacks the oozy smarminess of the Times radio critic Ben Brantley, and that's all to the good.  Kudos, Ben!

Gala Event?  The first anniversary party for SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE.  I was invited since I had nominated the show for the Pulitzer Prize, and it was a fantastic event at Sondheim's house in Turtle Bay.  Everyone involved with the show was there, and I saw lots of friends like the late great Mathilde Pincus and the late Larry Taylor, both of Chelsea Music and two people I still miss quite a lot.  Steve was a great host, and I remember the place being filled with people.  It began around 11:00 pm after the performance.  My date was my roommate at the time, Marilyn Barton, and she looked fantastic.  I wore my tux, as I recall, and I don't remember getting home before 3 am.

I just have to take this moment to present The Nancy Kelly Bad Seed Overacting Award to Mr Bruce Dern in BLACK SUNDAY....whew!

DR MATTH - I had forgotten Miss Heckart in UP/DOWN/STAIRCASE....yes she was wonderful, and I too loved the movie.  Read the book many times and didn't know HOW they were going to do it, but I liked the movie a lot....Sandy Dennis was charming and reminded me so much of some of my Jr High and High School teachers.

DR Danise, that is terrible about the people in the trailer parks.  I wonder why they would not leave.

I really like the Olympics.  I'd like to watch the diving and swimming today.  I guess when I'm home, I'll try to keep the tv on the background and hopefully I will catch them.

I know they will be on probably between 1pm-5pm.

I saw a bit of the Opening Ceremonies last night.  But the Greek alphabet confused me.  They kept saying that USA was number 56. And Canada was 72.

Luckily we have A LOT of coverage here.  Between NBC, CBC, TSN (sports network) ... that is a lot of coverage.

At the 1996 NAMES Project Washington DC display there was a fundraising dinner for the organization. It was also offered as a thank you to some of the more dedicated volunteers. It was held at the National Building Museum and what a beautiful space it was. Elegant and understated with amazing decorative touches all set off by some of the panels from the NAMES Project hanging around the room. There were mid-level politicos there along with Miss Judith Light, a long-time supporter and down-in-the-trenches display worker, and Miss Betty Buckley who sang many numbers during our meal. The only thing to take away (slightly) from the evening was the loathsome Fred Phelps family who stood outside the facility across the street with their signs of vile epithets and curses. If anyone even looked like they would approach to confront them, they would scream like wounded babies for the phalanx of policemen assigned to ensure that nothing untoward would happen (nothing did happen, btw, most of us were smarter than the toads). I don't often make blanket statements like this, but what a pile of sh*t those people are. I know that Woody and others don't like the word "hate" to be thrown around with abandon (and I agree with that), but in this case, I think it applies. They are hate-mongering toads who are the personification of evil. Even if they really believe what they spew out it is hard to treat them with anything but contempt (end of rant  :-X). Other than that, the evening was a great success and a beautiful part of the NAMES Project display.

I wonder if the actor told the others onstage what he was going to do?

It's a bit he does alone in the audience (with an audience member) at the top of Act 2, so the other actors aren't involved -- except for the fallout if he screws up.

The actor in question is wonderful in the show - he sometimes lacks discipline and that's what happened last night.  The bit HAS to start with a certain line - it just doesn't work any other way, and last night he didn't do the line, no one knew why he was in the audience and then he just kept digging himself into a hole when he didn't get his usual reaction - and that hole impacted the act more than you would think because the tone was off.  I still think they enjoyed it, but it was just a bit off the whole way.
Title: Re:OVERTIRED
Post by: Panni on August 14, 2004, 09:04:47 AM
Anyway, what I was saying about galas when I accidentally signed off is that I don't like crowds and I don't like small talk, and i get nervous at events like that -- so they are not my favorite things. I guess the various industry galas I've attended would be the ones to list in the gala field - Emmy, WGA, that kind of thing. As I said, I get nervous (although you'd never know it - I do work the room - that's where being an ex-actress comes in handy - I play Anna who enjoys this kind of thing) - and because of the nerves it's sort of like an out-of-body experience, so i don't remember much. Which is a long way of saying I'd have trouble describing said galas.
I do remember one daytine "gala" - at the Governor General's mansion in Ottawa. My then husband was getting some kind of award from the Gov-Gen and it was very formal and fun. For the Yanks, the Governor-General is the Queen's representative in Canada, so it's terribly formal with lots of bowing and scraping. Totally cool.

Perhaps I was too harsh on Miss Heckart - I, too, like her in Bus Stop and Up the Down Staircase, but she's a bit over the top in Seed (maybe it's because she'd done it on stage for two years) and she's a bit over the top (but excellent) in No Way to Treat a Lady.

Sorry about your actor's lapse last night - in my experience, 2nd night is always the one to fear!!! First night has that rush of adrenaline, 2nd night, there is the let-down. Generally, I love to see the 3rd performance of a show - the jitters and boo-boo's are done with, and it still has the "new" sheen of opening night, but has settled in.

Gala - well, the most glittery of all was a private party for the Royal Family of Holland, at the home of the Princess Christina in the East 80's (she was still married to Jorge Guillermo), in honor of the birthday of her mother, the former Queen Juliana. I was invited in to sing a recital for the event. They were such an appreciative audience for the Satie cafe songs and some vaudeville songs and operetta arias and a few Russian folksongs with my guitar. I led them all in "Happy Birthday" which was the hit of the evening. I wore my hair half up, half down. The "up" half was securely glued to my head. Scarlet evening gown, simple gold chain at my throat, gold watch. My pianist wore a tux. Dinner was posh, fewer than 20 people in attendance, I was treated as an honored guest. Even got invited back to lunch in a few weeks, and invited to HRH Christina's own recital some weeks after that. These were some of the kindest, most gracious people I have ever met.

I had the honor to sing a supporting part in Beverly Sills' final opera, and lemme tell ya, the glitterati were present for that one!!!

Wish I were going to be able to be present for this 3rd show of What If tonight...

In advance of Thursday's Dracula opening, there's a big article about Frank Wildhorn in tomorrow's New York Times.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/15/theater/newsandfeatures/15SUIS.html (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/15/theater/newsandfeatures/15SUIS.html)

I dare say many Dear Readers will enjoy this paragraph from the article:

Quote
In recent telephone interviews, three theater critics elaborated on their published invective. Linda Winer, of Newsday, said that Mr. Wildhorn writes "dunderheaded musicals for people who find Andrew Lloyd Webber too difficult." Ben Brantley, of The New York Times, allowed, "They're fine if you're in the mood to be emotionally knee-jerked." And Charles Isherwood of Variety said of Mr. Wildhorn: "His natural home is in Las Vegas. That might be his most sensible career move. Skip Broadway altogether."

(I find Ms. Winer's quote particularly delectable.)

Why would anyone want to stay in a mobile home during a hurricane?  Aren’t they notorious for being wiped out in these things?  Very, very sad to die needlessly.

Matt H, were you evacuated during Hugo?  When you say you lived through it does that mean you were trapped in the heart of the hurricane?

For all I know, the Olympics could be starting next month. Had I watched the opening, I'd probably be quite excited about it today.

The Washington Center for the Performing Arts here in Olympia has a CenterFest Celebration every February.  They have a big name come and perform and people with a lot of money pay a lot of money to help keep the Center in business.  Of all the ones that I've gone to, I've only NOT ushered for one of them.  Bernadette Peters was here a few years ago and I got to go and sit in the audience!  She was wonderful!  Her show was very similar to her "Sondheim Etc." concert & concert DVD.  Tony Bennett was the performer this year.  Gregory Hines performed last year.  They've also had Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr., Natalie Cole and...others too numerous to remember.

Other than that, the only other "gala" would be the opening of Harlequin's State Theater that I mentioned a few days ago.  It was the first stage show in what used to be a movie theater.  They had a great big opening night celebration...champagne for the audience, local news people, etc.  Quite fancy-schmancy!

...The only thing to take away (slightly) from the evening was the loathsome Fred Phelps family...I don't often make blanket statements like this, but what a pile of sh*t those people are. I know that Woody and others don't like the word "hate" to be thrown around with abandon (and I agree with that), but in this case, I think it applies. They are hate-mongering toads who are the personification of evil....
In this case, the word is (sadly) appropriate.

I remember being part of the Long Beach Gay Pride Parade one year, as part of the softball league's contingent.  Der Brucer opted instead to watch the parade from the sidelines...but it was WHERE he was sidelined that was the fun part.  The "anti's" (as opposed to the "aunties") were all together in a specific section of the parade route, with police keeping control.  Der B. positioned himself right next to that loud crew, and for every contingent in the parade that the crew chanted and jeered against, he whooped and hollered his support.

By the time we reunited after the parade, at the fairgrounds, he was quite hoarse, of course.  But he was also very happy.

GALA:

The biggest gala der Brucer and I have been to was called "The Gala", a fundraiser for the Long Beach theater company der B. served as a boardmember.  We wore our tuxes, and there were several celebs there, some of whom I met (such as Joseph Campanella and Jodi Benson).  Joining us at our table were our Congressman, Steve Horn, and his lovely wife, and a few other friends...and Nell Carter.

Nell was absolutely wonderful, and having a great time that evening.  There was a silent auction going on, as another part of the fundraiser, and I teamed up with her, to make sure no one out-bid her for certain items she wanted.

She was impressed enough with the theater that she later agreed to star in their production of Raisin.  Sadly, it was during the rehearsal process that she died, at her home, her heart giving out.

I wish I could have seen her in the show.  She would have been radiant.

I don't remember if I ever told you guys the address for that little count down/count up clock that I used to count down to my vacations.

I switched computers and since it was a free download, I tried to find it again on the web.  I have looked and looked and looked but couldn't find it!  I asked a few people I e-mail if I happened to send the address to them and thank goodness one of them had it!

I want to share the address while I have it handly in case any of you want it.

Last night we finally saw IN AMERICA.  I have wanted to see this movie since it was released.  It was definitely worth the wait.  What a powerful moving movie.  I looked up the real life sisters who portray siblings in the movie.  Both girls were terrific and I’m wondering why they have not done more work since then.

DRLaura, spectacular!  And I thought I walked early to beat the heat. :)

Thanks, Jane, I guess I should have asked you first but I couldn't remember having given it on this board or to you.

I have several lumps in my left wrist.  I've shown them to the doctor on serveral visits but she says they are just "water bumps".  Fluid filled but not dangerous.  They don't bother me.

HAVE A WONDERFUL THIRD NIGHT!

Just being in this business you attend a fair share of Galas...various openings and what-not.  Where you get your little gift basket and rub elbows with celebs.  I've attended openings for my own films, like DRAGONHEART which had the big red carpet gala in Westwood and afters party.  I've done the WGA awards which were fine for a couple of years, but paled pretty fast.  When I had a deal at Disney, they used to throw really good parties on the lot for screenings of their films, lots of celebs -- everyone from Spielberg to Charo...The Lovely Wife had her picture taken with Vincent Price at one...and great food...there be carts full of brownies and cookies and those were just the deserts.  They also did a Gala for the opening of Captain Eo down at Disneyland which was pretty darn spectacular...just threw the park open to an invited crowd.  They used to do that for one night during Christmas season too.

My favourite Galas though were attending the British Stunt Association Ball in London at the Grosvenor House.  We went twice.  The first time,  we stayed until four in the morning.  Saw legend Spike Milligan.  Had to wear a tuxedo (it was for this that I bought my first tuxedo).  Great fun...the Brits know how to party.  The Lovely Wife also won about 200 pds in a drawing.  She gave half of it back to the charity the event sponsored.  The other half she spent like a drunken sailor.

My other favourite Gala was for the 50th anniversary for our college theatre, The Guignol Theatre at the University of Kentucky.  My best friend, Roger Lee Leasor, president of the biggest liquor concern in Lexington and scion of local theatre there (he calls it non-neurotic theatre because there's no pressure to make a career of it.  As a student and a community local, he's probably done more shows on the Guignol stage than anyone) and I decided we would both wear tuxedos.  We were the only ones and we looked very spiffy, if I do say so myself.  It was a great evening of nostalgia and meeting old friends.  Both Roger and The Lovely Wife, Julieanne, sang.  Julieanne sort of blew people away there who had no idea she had the pipes she did...she wowed 'em with LAZY AFTERNOON and ANYONE CAN WHISTLE.  It was just a great, great weekend.

And there was, of course, my favourite day in Hollywood...Miklos Rozsa's memorial service.  Wasn't supposed to be a Gala, but more or less became one.  Great music; great memories.

Memory flash!  Keith and I did go to a gala event in Los Angeles.  It was to raise funds for my cousin’s oncologist and was hosted by John Stamos and Rebecca Ramijn Stamos.  John’s mother was the organizer of this annual event.  We only went the one time to support my cousin who thought the world of her doctor and was a speaker that evening.

I did not meet the Stamos’s but John’s mother is a warm delightful woman.  I had a few phone conversations with her prior to our meeting.  As for John, in person and in a tux, I must say he was better looking than on film, if that is possible.

The most glamorous event I've ever been to wat the 1976 Tony Awards (the year of A CHORUS LINE, CHICAGO and PACIFIC OVERTURES).  I wore a (rented) tux and I met someone I had met the night before in a bar.

When one watches that 1976 Tony Awards ceremony, it seems as if the theater audience is absolutely electrified by that opening CHROUS LINE number. As someone who was there that night, WEL, did you have that sensation?

DR Jane asked: "Matt H, were you evacuated during Hugo?  When you say you lived through it does that mean you were trapped in the heart of the hurricane?"

No, we weren't evacuated since we live 150 miles inland, we never suspected that the hurricane would arrive here with much force at all. Boy were we wrong! My neighbor had one huge pine tree blast through her dining room ceiling and another one come through her living room ceiling. She was elderly (82) and had gone to stay the night with her son. Otherwise, she most certainly would have been killed either by one of the trees or her heart giving out on her. There was damage like that all over town, and many people lost their power for up to three weeks. Fortunately for me, I got my power back in 3 days due to the mayor's father and mother living down the street from me. I think he saw to it that they got their power back on early. School was canceled for a week and a day (happened in late September after we had gone back to work).

As I said, I was indeed fortunate. I had a couple of small downed limbs in my front yard but many others didn't fare nearly as well. As for the storm itself, the wind and rain made noise such as I never want to hear again. Truly terrifying, and you could hear trees cracking all around you. That's what scared me the most: not knowing from one minute to the next if a tree was coming down on the house.

I FINALLY got my Deanna Durbin set today and naturally put in CAN'T HELP SINGING immediately. It looked glorious. I only noticed a couple of specks, but though I'm sure the movie went through no restoration at all, the elements for CAN'T HELP SINGING appear to be in beautiful shape. Tonight I'll watch IT STARTED WITH EVE.

Whoever wrote the liner notes, however, is a first class idiot. Simple research would eliminated errors from the VERY FIRST SENTENCE which states her Universal career lasted from 1939 - 1944. Huh? THREE SMART GIRLS, her debut feature film, was a 1936 movie, and she won the Oscar in 1938. How could that have happened if she didn't make a feature until 1939? And her last film, FOR THE LOVE OF MARY, was in 1948. How do people get jobs and keep them with that kind of incompetence?

DR Jane, there doesn't appear to be any special features on the set, and even if there were, I'm sure Deanna would not have participated. She left her Hollywood career behind long ago, does not like to even talk about it, and from what I understand, has been very reclusive over the last few years.

CAN'T HELP SINGING is the famous film of hers where she wears two different dresses during the finale reprises. She couldn't decide which dress she liked best, so she wore each of them while reprising two different numbers from the score at the end of the movie.

I spotted the John Wayne movie, Chisum at Walmart and had to buy it.  It is one of my very, very favorite JW films.  Can’t wait to pop it in the DVD player and watch it.  :)

I want to go tomorrow to pick The Bells Of St. Marys that I spotted over at the mall last weekend.  I thought I could get it at DeepDiscountDVD.com but it isn’t listed.

Eveyone have a nice evening.  I'm going to enjoy Chisum and maybe I'll be back afterwards.  Chisum!  John Chisum, weary, saddleworn.  Chisum!  John Chisum.....   I still remember the song.

DRPenny O, too true!  I listened to the full scores today to COPPELIA and SYLVIA, and what great ballet scores they are.  Didn't make it to LAKME, and decided to revisit Britten's PAUL BUNYAN instead, which moves me to tears with its choral finale of "Carry her over the water" and great litany:

From a Pressure Group that says I am the Constitution
From those who say Patriotism and mean Persecution
From a tolerance that is really inertia and disillusion
  Save animanls and men!

Amazing words for a piece written in 1940, and so appropriate today.  I wish City opera would revive the piece; it's the best thing I've seen there

I'm snapping pics left and right now that I've "fixed" the camera... One last show-and-tell... I have quite a bit of Inuit art. This is one of my favorite pieces. "My New Accordian" by Pudlo Pudlat. It's a beautiful lithograph (edition of only 50 in 1989) and is featured on the cover of the book Inuit Women Artists...

By the way - before someone corrects me - "accordian" is how it's written on the actual piece and in the listing in the catalogue. Just like bk with his "choice" for certain spellings, the artist (now deceased) chose to spell it this way. I honor her wishes.

Never heard OJ call his guest house habitué Kato Kaelin a "neighbor".

Sorry, DR Jay, but I'm hard pressed to sympathize.  Muggy in SoCal is balmy here in SoDel.

Charlie is coming our way, and it's hot and rainy (thus humid to the extreme) and I get to work like a busy little beaver during all this because the rain brings out the shoppers.

I suppose it would be too ungrateful for me to wish they'd all come in, buy out the store, and then wash away.   ::)

I've got to get up early tomorrow.  As stated, the rain brings on the shoppers, and Charlie is headed our way, with drenching all day today.  Since I'm on call, I'm planning on spending the day working my...uh...tootsies off.

I learned something important today, however.  It pays to throw the boss off guard on occasion.  We were having a private chat, just the two of us, over some personnel problems, and I tossed in her direction "What do you think I'm doing wrong?  I mean, what do you think I need to work on?"  Poor boss had to blink a few times, unsure of what she had heard.  I was actually asking her to critique me?  To find fault with myself?

She was able to come up with an answer (I need to work on my customer relations, helping them while on the floor by asking them if they have questions and such, rather than stick near the cash register), but I really surprised her with the challenge.

Something for everyone to keep in mind, maybe, when working for a paycheck.

July and August were the months I wanted to leave the east coast and visit L.A. Often I would wait for the weather to become unbearable and then plan my escape to the west coast.  On our arrival we found the locals complaining about the humidity, while the kids and I were relieved to be in such a mild climate.  :)

Now I don’t want to go to L.A. in the summer-too muggy for me. :P

Corn bread pudding sound good even if I’m stuffed.

Earlier today we briefly lost power and discovered our surge protector for the computer needed replacing…..so this evening we went to Medford, picked up a new one and went to an Indian Restaurant for dinner.  Since Baskin Robins is across the street from the restaurant we of course had to stop there before returning home.  I brought home a pint of chocolate chip.

It was over 100 degrees in Medford, so nice to be home where it was only 97 degrees.
