Title: AWAKE AND SING

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were awake and sung, and now it is time for you to post until the awake and singing cows come home.

And more LUCY SHOW memories from DR JEANNE...did Miss Lucy often have to do retakes?

Good morning, all! A drug-free night and I slept rather well.  In my last dream I was working on a play/film/je ne sais quoi about Giuseppe Verdi to star my good friend Stephen Rea. All i remember now is lots of stone staircases and a discussion of thevopera FALSTAFF.

This afternoon I am expecting a visit from our DR Anthony and Ben. I look forward to that.

DR vixmom, I'm so sorry about the DEAREST ENEMY mess! New World Records was slow this year in getting the copies to cast, crew and others on the comp list. I think part of the problems was the hold up on the booklet insert. There's a sad typo in the Criswell biography. She appeared in the Broadway production of THREEPENNY OPERA starring Sting. When I proofed the booklet, I asked them to add that info. I never saw the booklet for a second proof, and the designer made the name STRING. Oy!

Too many plays!  I'd include:
The Skin of Our Teeth
Mother Courage
Marat/Sade
A Streetcar Named Desire
No Exit
The Birthday Party

Saturday morning greetings!  In about an hour I will head to the local cemetery for our October AAUW luncheon meeting.  Not as morbid as it sounds - our local cemetery has one of the nicest community meeting facilities in town.  We're having lunch catered by one of my favorites and we have about 40 people signed up to attend.  Pray for Rosemary's baby...

These waits are the worst; you're stuck, and if the stars are bad, you'll get a call at noon saying they're running late.  I hope he shows up soon!
Title: Re: AWAKE AND SING
Post by: Cillaliz on October 12, 2013, 07:08:23 AM
The stars are not going to be bad because the weather is great.  I'm guessing the installer would rather come in great weather.  I've had a bunch of confirmation calls and emails.  Hoping that means that he'll really show up

Interesting observation, since BK asked our favorites, not "the best of the century" - maybe we gravitate towards the familiar language???

It's a tough list to come up with.  For example, I so loved THE SHADOW BOX and AS IS when I saw them, but they don't seem to have lasted.  And yet they were real favorites as far as seeing plays are concerned.

Had a good work session, and then lunch with the Staitman clan less one, Sarah, who stayed home.  We went to the Smoke House and I'm happy to say that my rather loud bitching about the loss of the shrimp louis has resulted in it being restored to the menu.  And that, of course, is what I had, along with a cup of clam chowder and some garlic cheese bread.  I used less dressing than I've ever used before, so that's good, especially as I have no time to jog thanks to this meeting at four-thirty.  I did pick up two packages, so that's good.

However, in order to get the cable into that room, I had to empty the closet in my office ....the closet where I've thrown all the misc stuff I didn't know what to do with for the past 7 years.  YIKES!   So, I'm taking advantage of it.  I went to Home Depot and bought some Martha Stewart cubby hole shelving units and am putting them in the closet.  I'll have them three wide and 5 tall, so roughly three feet by five feet.  I've got the bottom unit put together, installed and nearly filled already.  I wasn't sure I needed the others, but I know I do.  It's amazing what  little organization can do.  I'm finding lots of my photography stuff, I bought a ton of frames back when I was into it.  I found tons of photos that I thought I had lost along the way.   Think I may take a break from working and look through some of them while I watch tv

The installer was a nice guy from Las Vegas.  They go places, stay and install for a month at a time.  Anyway, he had to widen the hole where the coax cable comes into the house and had some trouble.  He nicked the phone line with his drill and after he left I discovered that only one phone in the house worked.   I called Directv, they contacted him and he was back and repaired it later in the afternoon.  I'm very pleased with the service.

And, he was able to put the dish on the garage roof, on the side/back of the house.  You can't see it from the front at all.  Now THAT'S what I'm talking about.

After all this work vibes you are happy with directv.

I've had it in the past. I'm just getting used to where the channels are. I think I'll be very happy once I'm used to it.  There are plusses and minuses to it.  I'm keeping cable internet and cable phone.  Cable is the best internet service around here so it's the best of both worlds.  And I have basic cable at the office, so if there's something I really want to see that isn't on Directv, I can watch it there

I had equal success with iTunes support. They emailed me back and told me to get the latest download from the iTunes/Apple page. I did, and everything I had downloaded suddenly showed up in my new iTunes. I'm surprised because i recently got a new update on my computer but i am very happy now.

I had three exciting things happen today.

1.  A book I have been waiting months and months for became available this morning just as I needed a new book to read having read my entire book during my sleepless night.

2. Another book I have been waiting even longer for, and especially want to read, became available just a little while ago.

3.  I was able to put a book on my hold list that hasn't been published yet., the very first time this has been possible with my eBook library.  I am 85th on the queue so it will be a long, long time before I read the current John Grisham book-lol

Man and Superman (and plenty other Shaw works)

Hi from Chicago!!   I'm visiting my pal Angela for the weekend.  It's been fun seeing the sights.  Tonight I'm on my own as Angela is in a production of "The Mikado" (which I saw last night) so I'm seeing the national tour of "Once".  Today, we went to the The Art Institute and of course, I saw the original Seurat's great painting, which was really great. Tomorrow I'm seeing a play called "To Master the Art" about Julia Child.  I believe it's locally written and has been playing for a while, I'm excited to see that.

Of course, there has been pizza consumed and things like that.  I'll check in again soon.

The weather was so warm here today. I love it when I can wear a t-shirt outside in mid-October.

I took my niece to bike at the lake today. The Fall colors are so magnificent there.  She was a bit nervous about biking around the actual lake (because she fell and hurt herself the first time we tried doing it). It is gravel and not really ideal for inexperienced riders.

Anyway I have taken her by bike to the park at the lake quite a few times. There is an entry where it is very wide and not near the lake. So she is comfortable doing that.  But she wasn't sure if she would be able to ride around where the actual lake's bike path is.

First we stopped to admire the ducks and i took some nice pictures. Then we stopped at the park. Then we ran into her homeroom teacher/English at school who seemed very nice.  Then we biked around the lake. We only went half way and then turned around (there are two paths at the section). So we looped around so we could go home by the bigger path. IT took 1 1/2 hours to do just this as she kept wanting to stop and look and collect leaves.

Thankfully she didn't fall this time. Although she did remember falling. But I told her i thought that she could do it.

By any chancing would someone here have the soundtrack recording of "Some Came Running" that was released by Film Score Monthly? I am looking to get a copy of the vocal version of To Love and Be Loved which was sung in the background. This release seems to be the only one that has the vocal by an unnamed (as far as I know) mens group. Thanks.

I haven't talked to him yet, but our building maintenance man said he'd have him come visit with me because I'm a history buff.  The story I was told is that his dad didn't want to be a part of the family business, so to speak, so he moved to Nebraska.  When the painter was a kid, he was sent to Wisconsin to the family's "camp" (whatever that is). They wanted him to stay there and work with them, but his dad wouldn't let him.  I'm assuming from this story that he has memories of him

Happy Saturday, All!

I'm on a bit of a hit and run here in the next few days, as I try and organize for a trip back east to Philly to be the best man at my brother's wedding. Hoping maybe to add a trip to NYC, even for a day and catch a show, see some friends, and I wouldn't say no to an audition either.   :D.

I wish I had the focus to really list my favorite plays, and I'm happy to see that many were already mentioned.
Here are a few that come to mind right off the top, some I've seen, some I've done:
THE REAL THING
THE ROYAL FAMILY
NOISES OFF
LEGACY OF LIGHT
SYLVIA

and there are too many classics to mention.

I hope everyone has a great 3 day weekend.

Totally agree about three-act plays.

The lesson I have learned about three-act plays; it is never take a role that only appears in the third act.  Half of your audience goes home after act two.

I ended up with a loose page in my booklet.  It is no big deal, in fact I can't see that it serves any purpose.  I may send the loose page to elmore so he can sign it for me.

My brothers Kevin, Rick and hubby Jerry really enjoyed the show.

The  actors were very talented.  I was really impressed with their singing.  They sounded and looked like the originals.

The actor who played "Ricky" was the best I thought.  I also began to have a crush on him because he is so cute.

Afterwards we went to Applebees, and then off to shopping for our great niece's birthday.

As Kate wrote, the I Love Lucy Show was a lot of fun!    They had a contestant from the audience come up on stage and answer questions about the show (What was Lucy's maiden name, What state was Ethel from, What was the name of the book Lucy was reading in the episode "Lucy thinks Ricky is trying to kill her?").  One of the actresses started out as a member of the audience (dressed in 1950's garb) and played several characters, all hilariously.

THE LION IN WINTER
WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF
THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS

I have done the first three and always hoped I could do the other two  Long past those roles now.  Among other problems.  I think my favorite of the five is DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS.  Maybe because I never got to do the show.  It is just such a beautiful touch of Americana.  It is DEATH OF A SALESMAN without being quite such a downer.  And the movie is so perfectly cast.  Robert Preston, Dorothy McGuire, Angela Lansbury, Eve Arden, and Shirley Knight, before she was a Hopkins.

Topic of the Day:

Angels In America (both parts)
Arcadia
Bent
Noises Off
The Rainmaker
Torch Song Trilogy
A Streetcar Named Desire
You Can't Take It with You

I asked my friend Sarah (she's the stage manager for "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe") who's sitting right next to me and she said that her favorite play ever is "The Death of a Salesman."  I've never seen it, so it can't be on my list.

I hope I never have to sit thru another production of SALESMAN.  I have been to funerals that had more humor than that show.  I have seen some wonderful productions.  I think Lee J. Cobb was my favorite.  If I have to see Miller, I prefer THE CRUCIBLE or ALL MY SONS.

A little before 5:00AM I was about to post and mention I had been wide awake all night when my Nook made a loud warning beep to tell me the battery was about to run out.  I of course shut it off before it beeped again.  I have no idea how the sound volume got turned up when I left it all the way down.  I'm not sure if Keith knows why he heard me get up.

I had a crazy time last night, as well.  I think I rolled over and turned on the light again four different times.  Very weird.

After all this work vibes you are happy with directv.

I love Direct TV.

I've made a friend on the FB Forgotten Musicals page, a Boston College student named Jackson, and I've suggested he should check out HHW. He likes old TV, old musicals, and old movies, and I think he would be a great addition

Does he like old actors?

Glad you are enjoying yourself, Matthew.

Oh Cool!! I found it on the internet.   The painter is Harry Hart referred to in this article.  This is the same story I was told

http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2011/11/al-capone-had-a-brother-who-was-a-prohibition-enforcement-officer/ (http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2011/11/al-capone-had-a-brother-who-was-a-prohibition-enforcement-officer/)

That story would make a great movie.

Yes, we will be seeing Larry this afternoon. I'll be his produce man.

Meanwhile, here's a picture of him and Kevin (who is on his way to Buffalo, I believe, to see sister Kate and the Lucy Show)

Couldn't someone have warned me to put on sunglasses before looking at that photo?

(In my best Jack Benny voice):  "Well!"

Oh you are adorable, Kevin!

TCB, stay away from the Pumpkin Kit Kat's, too.

That sounds nasty.  I think the yogurt's problem was too much clove.

I truly wish that NYC was not such a wheelchair unfriendly city.  I would love to see the memorial at Ground Zero.  And, of course, there are some wonderful people there who I would love to visit.

Had a productive meeting at the theater and we're all on the same page about everything now.  The real challenge of this show for me is going to be getting to the theater and getting home without exploding thanks to the LA horror show known as traffic.

Hire a limo for the month.  Then you can watch movies in the back while the driver tears his hair out.

TCB, I too prefer ALL MY SONS to DEATH OF A SALESMAN...And at this current stage of our history, I think it's never been more relevant.

No, we've only done it once, last month for the anniversary show.

I loved Once probably more than I've ever loved another show.  I can't wait for the chance to see it again.
