Welcome, DR upperco. As you might be able to tell from my quote below, I'm a Porter fanatic, too. (And a gin fan.) What's your favorite Porter tune?
Because it looked so damned good yesterday in the store bakery section, an area I usually avoid these days. That's why because. Or because why.
...DR Ginny, I had a most unusual dream about a Miami University production of The Beggar's Opera. We did it better....
And the word of the day is: PINION.
From yesterday's thread:QuoteWelcome, DR upperco. As you might be able to tell from my quote below, I'm a Porter fanatic, too. (And a gin fan.) What's your favorite Porter tune?
Of course, I like all the standards ("Night And Day," "You're The Top," "Begin The Beguine," "It's De-Lovely," "So In Love," etc.). I'm also very partial to "It's All Right With Me" from CAN-CAN (1953).
Now when it comes to neglected songs (like "Say It With Gin") that I think should be better known, I have a handful: "Where Have You Been?" from THE NEW YORKERS (1930), "Hey, Babe, Hey" from BORN TO DANCE (1936), "From Alpha To Omega" from YOU NEVER KNOW (1938), "The Leader Of A Big Time Band" from SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS (1943), "Hasta Luego" from SOMETHING TO SHOUT ABOUT (1943), "They Couldn't Compare To You" from OUT OF THIS WORLD (1950), and "I Am In Love" from CAN-CAN (1953), are but a few.
Collectively, however, I think FIFTY MILLION FRENCHMEN (1929), NYMPH ERRANT (1933), JUBILEE (1935), and LET'S FACE IT (1941) house some of the best little-known Porter tunes.
How about you?

Vibes for Cillaliz.
The news is saying that actor Ed Lauter passed away yesterday.

FJL, just saw your revised lyrics to Ladies Who Lunch. Some of your best work yet. Very sardonic and apt.
Good morning, all.
Good day for an omelet.
My favorite is Mom's, which is really more of a frittata, but it's ham and cheese with celery tops baked in the eggs.
But I never say no to a good lobser omelet.

I think my biggest omelet eating years were my L.A. ones, and oddly enough, the first one I remember upon moving to Hollywood in the summer of '72 was a banana omelet at Coffee Dan's. Don't know what else was in it. (Maybe raisins?) Went back a few times for that one.
Otherwise, I usually just went for the heartier ones along the lines of chili and cheese, Mexican with chorizo (ate those a lot for weekend breakfasts at a great little diner called CJ's Pantry in Redondo Beach), western omelets, that kind of thing.
For a while, I was making them at home, usually the Mexican variety with diced green chiles, tomato, avocado, onion (loved green onions in omelets), perhaps cilantro, some kind of hot sauce, and always cheese. I'd load those babies up. Probably never learned the "correct" way of making omelets, flipping them or whatever, but I got pretty good at getting the ingredients laid out in the egg mixture in a large skillet, and carefully folding the eggs over.
This is making me hungry.

It's a church!
It's a chicken joint!
It's a church!
It's a chicken joint!
It's a church AND a chicken joint!
I've never seen a chicken wear a beanie before.

Chas, your Mexican omes sound good, except please leave the cilantro out of mine. If I wanted my omelet to taste like soap, I would add a few chunks of Lifebuoy.
I'll be back later today to tell my tale from yesterday. My body is a bit sore but otherwise all is well. My hiking group ended up hiking from 10:00 to almost 7:00. As we made our way out of the woods we heard the sirens, and sure enough the sheriff's department was out there waiting for us. :-[
Poor Keith said he knows how much he loves me cuz he was terrified. Awww, brings tears to my eyes every time I think of him.
Gosh, DR Jane! That was a long hike!

;D
I know many people who won't eat anything with cilantro in it.
DR Jane, what Samsung smartphone did Keith just get? I have a new Galaxy Note 3. It's big (a 5.7" screen), and I am really loving it!
Remember I posted several weeks ago about the cat who had wandered away from Mary Linda's parents' house? Well, here is ML's mother's Facebook status from this morning:
"CHESTER IS HOME!!!!! He showed up while I was getting dressed for work this morning on the deck outside our bedroom. He looks fine.... not even like a cat that has been living in the wild for 5 weeks!! He must have found a food source somewhere.... if only they could talk."
Amazing...
Happiest of anniversaries to DR Vixmom and Vixdad!
DR Jane--glad you're back home safe and sound!

Haven't tried Lifebuoy, but I love cilantro in just about anything.
DRcillaliz, how awful! I hope this morning your aches from the accident are over. Did you get all the insurance info from the source of the collision? How did rehearsal go?
Sorry about your (new) accident, DR Cillaliz!
DR Cillaliz, I hope that you will be okay. And hopefully the middle car driver will be fine too.
Did the person who hit you guys give some reason as to why they would hit a bunch of cars that are stopped? I can't believe that someone could be so stupid.
TOD - One of the best omelets I've ever had was the Garden Omelet at Sarabeth's on Central Park South before the HHW walk with DR Jose through Central Park and the Upper East Side. Broccoli, corn, carrots, and Cheddar cheese - YUM!I remember that! I think I may have had that one too
I do make omelets, often on meatless Fridays during Lent.
Happy anniversary, Vixmom and Vixdad!
~ ~ ~ VIBES OF COPING ~ ~ ~ to DR Ginny and her mother!
DR Jane, was the long hike intentional or did something happen? Very concerning....glad you are safe and sound
That was an adventure.
Had too much fun doing a work session with an eight-year-old ball of fire - she's amazing. T
DR Elmore, our rehearsal last night was actually pretty rough, but we'll be ready, we always come through at concert time. The theme for our concert is "It's Iowa" featuring numbers written, arranged, published or about Iowa.
Some of them are a stretch but here's what we are playing:
Not in concert order:
Fanfare and Processional by Chuck Dibley (our conductor) he wrote it originally for a string quintet for his daughter's wedding, it's really wonderful
Selections from The Music Man
Part of The Slavonic Dances by Dvorak
Paglacci Intermezzo By Leoncavallo, arranged by Andrew Glover, our guest conductor - from Iowa
Princess Oskloosa March by Barnhouse
Bridges by Chuck Dibley
Rushmore a Symphonic Prologue for Winds by Alfred Reed
The Big Cage Circus Galop by Karl King
In the Mood, by Joe Garland
Small Town Sketches by David Moore (an Iowa composer)
Barnum and Bailey's Favorite march by Karl King
100% of the door goes to charity. This time it's the Westwood High School. They had some music trip to California and all their equipment was stolen, so we're donating to help replace it. Some of the band members are playing with us for 4 of the pieces.
DR Cillaliz, I hope that you will be okay. And hopefully the middle car driver will be fine too.

My guess is he was texting, but I don't know. He was very upset when I was around him and liability is so clear I didn't see a reason to bother him. There were either two or three cars ahead of me, so he would have had to have missed seeing 5 stopped cars in a row. He had to be texting or something
Keith has the same phone and loves everything about it except that he can't find a case for it, the kind with the window. Do you have a case?
Post deleted. Just because
DR Jane, what a scary story, especially as it started getting dark. Even more glad you are home and safe.
DR Jane that is crazy. Especially that you had to go ahead (instead of backtracking). Just because that was what the majority decided. I guess it's better to all stay together. But really if the others are making you do something dumb. That must have been tough with a sick person. :(
I was wondering how you could have gotten lost since you seem to hike so often.
Do cell phones not work anywhere around there?
I'll say it again, DR Jane - glad that you (and all of your party) are OK!
Oh, and DR Cillaliz - thanks for the link to the "Deep Blue"! :)
I'll say it again, DR Jane - glad that you (and all of your party) are OK!
Thank you very much.
I like a Western Omelet - which I have sometimes when I eat out for breakfast....which I have not since the 20th Century.

Same problem, DR Jane. The kind of case that Keith wants is the case I want. They're not available yet. I have another case on it for now, until that type becomes available.
I'm feeling somewhat revived after eating dinner, so here is a short version of what happened....<SNIP>
Waiting for the premiere of White Collar (actually it just started). This is the first time that we have ever gotten it the same night as in the US. Since we don't get the USA network in Canada we are normally months behind. So this is exciting since it is one of my favorite shows (and there was a big cliffhanger at the end of last season).
My first job in Phoenix back in 1986 was as a law clerk/bailiff for a judge in the Superior court. Since that time he's been on the Arizona Supreme Court, a federal district and now a senior judge. Today I got a call looking for me.. it was his law clerk trying to find me to invite me to a reunion of all his law clerks. How cool is that! So....there may be a very quick trip to AZ in my near future. I'm waiting for the details in an email. I think if I only spend one night there, Callie will be ok even if a sitter can't give her meds. It would be pretty cool to see him again. I loved working for him
I did not join DR ChasSmith tonight, much as I would have liked to, and I hope the show went well for Sandy and Lanny. I look forward to his report.
I went to read DR Kate's review and got caught up in all the reviews. I think it's time for all three books to be acknowledged as a 3-part novel and published in one volume, like DAVID COPPERFIELD. TH White's THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING began as separate novels.
And I am off to bed.
Also hoping that all went well at the Sandy/Lanny show. And looking forward to DR ChasSmith's report!
Hmmm.... So far, Windows 8.1 doesn't seem all that different from Windows 8.
Good evening, all. Back from a WONDERFUL evening of music that just flew by. As I told Sandy, when she announced the last number, I thought it would have been just fine if she'd announced a short intermission instead. Really a wonderful show of top-notch music. I thought she was in fine command of her act, and Lanny and Jay (as always) and the guitarist and drummer were an incredible band. Just perfect. You all really missed something, and it's too bad this was a one-shot engagement. I grabbed some photographic evidence with my phone's camera, but am way too beat to tackle that tonight. I'm hoping there will be a few shots, even if slightly blurry in the low light, worth posting -- and I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks to both BK and SB for a fine evening!
