Post by: bk on November 04, 2013, 12:28:24 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were all about Kritzerland at Sterling's 39, and now it is time for you to post until the 39 cows come home - they're currently on the 39 steps.

Good morning, all! It's 46 degrees today, and I'm debating what to wear to physical therapy. Because of the exercises, I usually wear shorts, but I really have no urge to wait for a bus and freeze nt butt off.  Well, I have two and a half more hours to decide.

It's good to hear the shows went well yesterday.  The photos were fun to peruse.

DR Matthew, re the G&D tempi: this is usually because John Yap records many of the orchestra tracks without the singers, since he would overdub them in Manhattan later, and the conductor often has no idea what tempo the singer might like.

CAROUSEL
Julie  .  .  .   Liza Minnelli
Billy  .  .  .   Mick Jagger
Carrie  .  .   Kim Kardashian
Mr Snow  .  Bruce Jenner
Nerriw  .  .  Dame Edna

Good morning, all.

Up early this morning to meet and greet my electrician who was going to drop by around 7 a.m. to do a couple of things and get some paperwork from me -- who I haven't seen hide nor hair of yet, an hour and half later...

No biggie, he can do this any time, and he's a great guy, but geez.

At least I slept well, and the day is mostly mine.  Going to sit in on rehearsal tonight, to stay up to date on show pacing, etc., with Ethel Toffelmeir at the piano...

The shows yesterday sound like the greatest thing ever, and I love the pictures.  Hope to see even more, plus any video available that BK is willing to share.  This was certainly one not to miss, which of course we all - except for DR KevinH - did miss!  :)

Here's the complete release info:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition release – two world premiere scores on one CD and classic Jerry Lewis double bill:

VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET

Composed and Conducted by Leigh Harline

and

THE DELICATE DELINQUENT

Composed and Conducted by Buddy Bregman

It’s hard to imagine just how popular Martin and Lewis were back in the day, but they were as big as it got, in both personal appearances and all their films together.  But it all ended in 1956 with the pair’s final film for Paramount, Hollywood or Bust.  Lewis stayed at Paramount and began making solo pictures.  Within a short time, he became Paramount’s biggest star.

Visit to a Small Planet began life as a television play by Gore Vidal and then Vidal adapted it for the Broadway stage.  The play was a hit, and Paramount bought the rights, turning it into a vehicle that was specifically tailored to Jerry Lewis and jettisoning a good deal of the Vidal play in the process.  Appearing alongside Lewis was a terrific supporting cast, including Fred Clark, John Williams, Joan Blackman, Gale Gordon and Earl Holliman.

Visit to a Small Planet was yet another solo hit for Lewis. Aiding Lewis immeasurably in his hijinks is the delightful score by Leigh Harline.  Harline’s score for Visit to a Small Planet is a treasure, beginning with a melodic seven-note main theme that is impossible to get out of one’s head once it’s been heard.  Harline makes liberal use of the Theremin and keeps the comedy in the film plowing forward with his clever and infectious musical hijinks.  There are a few nice source music cues, too, and the whole thing adds up to an entertaining and buoyant score.

The Delicate Delinquent was originally meant to be the Martin and Lewis follow-up to Hollywood or Bust, but when the partnership went bust the film was quickly retooled as a solo vehicle for Lewis, with the Martin role going to actor Darren McGavin.  The scoring assignment fell to someone relatively new to film composition, a young wunderkind named Buddy Bregman.  Bregman’s score for The Delicate Delinquent is an undiscovered gem.  His themes are tuneful and his scoring expert.  The score starts out with a bang with the exciting main title – all bongos and drums and percussion until the dynamic orchestra enters with its propulsive rhythms and its jazzy pyrotechnics.  There follows a lovely, bluesy theme for saxophone and orchestra and that’s followed by the main theme, a truly beautiful melody that will appear throughout the score, along with more of the big-band, jazzier stuff.   Bregman never plays up the comedy – it’s a straightforward score and it’s one of the reasons the film holds up well today.
This is the world premiere release of both scores, taken from tapes housed in the Paramount vaults.  These two scores in particular are very different from each other, but each is perfect for the film it’s underscoring, and both are delightful to listen to on their own.

Visit to a Small Planet/The Delicate Delinquent is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

CDs will ship the second week of December, but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Hey, Slang Jang, stop stealing my thoughts. My first thought was Lea DeLaria as Jigger.

So, in honor of her great work on West Side Story, I cast Cher in all the roles of Carousel.

Hi All,

I don't normally post about the Krizterland Shows any more because BK does such a great job describing them and anything I could say would be redundant.  However, this time I wanted to add a couple of things.

My wife and I were lucky enough to be seated with DR KevinH and his friends.  We liked them very much and while we don't hold out a lot of hope of seeing KevinH a lot more for geographical reasons, we do hope to see his friends at future shows.

Also, I commented to my wife (and later to BK) that Jenna and Sami, as good as they were from their very first Krizterland shows, have grown tremendously as performers under BK's guidance.  Janet and I enjoy all the Kritzerland shows, but seeing these young people develop each month before our very eyes adds a whole new dimension to our enjoyment.  I suspect that we'll also be seeing some great things from Hadley in the future as well.  She was, as BK says, adorable.

Mom was a trouper and came through her test unscathed.  She wanted to go to Central Pastry afterwards, but not before spending $25 at the hospital auxiliary's jewelry and accessory sale.  Each item was $5, including the sparkly scarf that she bought for me to wear in New York.  I got her settled at home and now I'm home eating lunch and preparing to take a nap.  I suspect Mom was asleep before I pulled out of her parking lot.

Thanks for all the vibes.  We should have a report by Wednesday.

Yes, if you wrap it well and because it will be too pretty to ruin before Thanksgiving ;)

That was a clever idea to put the donations where all could see them and that they would be blessed.

Your reports are always enjoyable to read.  This one was extra special since you sat next to DR Kevin.

Exactly.

Thanks, again, for all the Mom vibes.  A nap was not to be had, because our land line and my cell phone kept ringing.  At least I rested in my recliner for a while.

From DR Vixmom:
Quote
It's a beautiful platter  and decorated for Thanksgiving - if I keep it refrigerated do you think it will stay until Thanksgiving?

Yes, if you wrap it well and because it will be too pretty to ruin before Thanksgiving ;)

That was a clever idea to put the donations where all could see them and that they would be blessed.

Actually, it depends upon where she stores it.  Well-wrapped chocolates have a way of disappearing when several pairs of hands have to reach over and under them for other edibles.

Keith came in wearing his pond clothes (waterproof waders) and unplugged the modem and moved it from the little cabinet it was in and plugged it back in.  We are hoping it was overheating causing our internet problems.

Before addressing the phone issue, which didn't improve while the modem was unplugged, we need to know if the internet problem is fixed.

DR Matthew, re the G&D tempi: this is usually because John Yap records many of the orchestra tracks without the singers, since he would overdub them in Manhattan later, and the conductor often has no idea what tempo the singer might like.

OY!!

CAROUSEL
Julie  .  .  .   Liza Minnelli
Billy  .  .  .   Mick Jagger
Carrie  .  .   Kim Kardashian
Mr Snow  .  Bruce Jenner
Nerriw  .  .  Dame Edna

I'd enjoy anything with Dame Edna in it, but don't you think the Kardasians get ENOUGH attention?  ;)

DR VinTek, please keep posting about the shows.  It is always nice to read comments from someone other than BK; and we can't count on Kevin to fly out for every show (unless Brent, or Barbra, becomes a regular).

My thoughts exactly.
