Well, you've read the notes, the notes had moxie, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently displaying their MOOxie.
-
And the word of the day is: BONHOMIE!
-
Morning all.
That is all.

Ah, there it is. I missed it yesterday! :)

Good morning, all.
Coffee, baby. Oh yeah.
-
good morning to all

there weren't any outré sodas in montreal when I was growing up
-
There was a cola in Montreal called KIK. It's no longer around but I believe the company now produces the cola as generic brand names for food markets etc.

TOD
Coke; Royal Crown (RC) Cola as an occasional alternate; Hires and My Dad's Root Beers (at home in bottles; otherwise, A&W Root Beer in frosty mugs and the Birch Beer in frosty mugs at the Royal Castle chain; Vernors Ginger Ale (never a regular thing for some damned reason, but always a very special treat whenever they brought some home); and 7-Up which I never liked very much. I suspect I'd still find it a very boring drink and I have no desire to even test that theory. All of these were from glass bottles.
Of those, Coke was always my absolute favorite #1 drink, and still is. But nowadays I also appreciate the occasional "Throwback" (original formula) Pepsi. I also love trying various Root Beers and Ginger Beers. I say "beer" instead of "ale" because only Vernors, which is very regional to the midwest, made the one that actually tasted of ginger, and the only drinks that REALLY taste of good ginger in the northeast are those labeled Ginger Beer. Canada Dry and Schweppes, for instance, might as well be labeled "sweet carbonated water" in comparison to Vernors and the others.

Good morning.
Good morning.

And nothing. ;D
Absolutely nothing. ;D
Too darn tired, too darn tired. ;)

Good morning, all! Today is another round of physical therapy, and I look forward to it. I'm still pondering questions that have made the past days tense - how do you budget a recording and include nothing for the overdubbing sessions? how do you make a budget without knowing the entire cast? - and still irate over the foolishness of some people. I'm also still terrified of unemployment, and it's been my experience in the past that if you've no work offers by Thanksgiving, then you will be unemployed until January 2.
After therapy, I will stop at the Seven-Eleven and the pharmacy next to the bus stop for a couple of items on my way home. Then I have a long long weekend, although I may break it up with a trip to Toyland on Saturday to continue cleaning up DEAREST ENEMY.
-
I'm driving over to Poughkeepsie (where they pick their feet) this morning to make a killing at the Barnes & Noble Criterion sale. It's one of the closest full-service B&Ns, and a great one for this event because it's one of the stores where the salespeople bend over backwards to help you utilize every coupon and discount... and I go over there loaded with them. There are reports of B&Ns elsewhere where they bend over backwards to PREVENT you from using them, so I consider myself fortunate. I have a handsome collection of Criterion Blu-rays and DVDs, and this helps to support that habit.

It should go without saying, but one must say it:
Employment VIBES for DR Elmore!
And down with idiots, while I'm at it!
-
Thanks, DR ChasSmith! I could certainly use the employment vibes. I do not want to spend the next months eating up my savings.
Here's the Times review for the new Bob Fosse biography; it's the next book when I finish Bitch in A Bonnet.

Good morning, all.
Employment vibes for Elmore. And vibes for all.

TOD:
Wink was always my favorite soda with its crisp grapefruit flavor. Canada Dry bought it up and years later stopped making it.
Mexican Fresca, made with sugar, is just as good, but I read yesterday that they're going to stop using sugar and start using corn syrup in Mexican sodas. Guess I'll give them up for good, except for a ginger beer on occasion as a mixer.

Thanks, ChasSmith, for the heads up on the Criterion sale.
-
BTW: the Amazon $5 CD sale this month includes Wicked OBC, Barbra's Duets album and Neil Diamond's Jazz Singer soundtrack.

I remember Wink!

I mean, right after the stores around here have gotten with the program and started stocking some so they're easy to get?
-
Thursday morning greetings! After all the rain and wind yesterday our yard and driveway were a mess of leaves, so our lawn guys are here cleaning it up for us. Probably the last time we'll see them until next spring.

Nope. The link below is related. It's about what's called "Mexicoke" which is available in many Spanish bodegas in New York City. It's Coke made with sugar, not corn syrup. The bottlers are planning to change all the soda products in Mexico due to (as you can see if you read the blog post) a Bloomberg-style "fat tax".

My evil sister-in-law Lady Macbeth is now on Facebook, but I'll never "friend" her. I was just looking at her homepage and I was amazed: it's mostly photos of food and recipes and she doesn't cook! Macbeth does; she's too busy with coven sessions, changing people to stone, and ruining the weather.

My evil sister-in-law is now on Facebook. She's busy ruining the weather.
So that's why we're getting rain today and tomorrow!
-
MOXIE! I never had the soft drink....
I liked Pepsi in the bottle when I was small.....and I could almost finish one! Way back then, you could also change bottles in the carton and get different things....so it was always nice to get a 7 Up - which was my favorite.
Vernor's is a nice drink and mixer...and it does have the ginger for sure!
I don't drink carbonated drinks now....but I do have a Diet Pepsi once in awhile.
-
Any DR who enjoys Vernor's might like to try a shake made with Vernor's and vanilla ice cream. It is DEE-lightful!
-
TOD - Growing up in Detroit, I was supposed to like Vernor's Ginger Ale, but I
didn't don't. Guess that's because I'm not a native...
Faygo is another Detroit brand and I really liked their Rock 'n' Rye - kind of a Dr. Pepper flavor.

Never could figure out why that's called a Boston Cooler!

Oh dear, I have been asked to consider playing Philoktetes in a play called ACHILLES/ACHILLES SON....it is a very amusing play.....but I don't know...... I have never been in a play like this.......

We keep almost no pop in the house. When I want something fizzy, I drink LaCroix (http://www.lacroixwater.com) flavored waters or plain club soda with lemon or lime.

I like rye. Usually in an old fashioned. Or a rye sour. No soda.
-
I remember Wink!
Yum. What great memories.
-
Anybody know how long soda keeps? If I buy a case of Fresca before they ruin it, how long could I keep until it is ruined?
-
Thanks, George, for the note on First Date. I thought I remember your posting something about it.
-
BK, re: the route that you mentioned here that is now no good. Is it possible that it varies? I know routes that are good 80% of the time. But depending on the day or time of day they can end up being backed up.
-
DR JOHN G - I think soda has an expiration date on it.
-
TOD:
The earliest soft drink I remember is Coca Cola (original "original" forumla). I can reinforce this by relating that as a child of 3 or 4, I spied what I thought to be a glass of coke on a kitchen counter. I pulled up a chair, took the glass and downed it.
It was bourbon. My mother said I screamed bloody murder.
Other favorites (other than Coca-Cola, that is): Dr. Pepper, 7-Up, Nehi Grape and Orange Crush.
I don't recall anything "outre" other than "Mountain Dew" and a Shasta soda I had at a picnic when I was on USS Carl Vinson.
-
Employment (or lottery winning) vibes for DR Elmore!
-
I know it seems like I have been E and T lately, but that is because I have been. Well, I wasn't E and T yesterday, I just didn't have anything interesting to post...of course that does not usually stop me. It certainly won't stop me today, as you can see.
-
TOD:
As a kid Pepsi and Dr. Pepper were my favorites, but I wasn't all that picky. Enjoyed Orange Crush quite a lot, also.
Most outre would be some of the berry flavored Shasta drinks, I guess. I may have had some odd flavored sodas in Japan, but I do not recall off hand.

Planning for the Diwali event this Saturday is coming along....but holy cow, there is a lot of preparation for such an event!
I did get permission from the Fire Marshal for the buffet issue, so we no longer have to worry about food being cold.
And, so far we have sold over 350 tickets! That is a lot more than we had expected!
This has all been keeping me very busy the last two weeks or so. I will be relieved when it is over.
-
Great news about your upcoming event, DR MBarnum! Yes, often when pursuing worthwhile projects you eventually just look forward to being finished with them.

Thank you. I like that.

Now, what's an anagram for Whiskeypalian?
-
I, on the other hand, am up.

And Sandy and Lanny will be here too soon. Had I not set my alarm I would have probably slept until noon.

I've known a few of those!

I learned that word from an Episcopalian. I still laugh when I hear it.

And I am home from physical therapy and a very miserable trip to the Walgreens at 95th and Broadway. I am also sick today of privileged stupid ass parents who take the seats reserved for the halt, lame and maimed with their precious progeny when there are plenty of other seats on the goddamned bus. I experienced this phenomenon on all four buses I had to ride today.
On more fun news, E&T DR PennyO is in Manhattan today and we will have lunch tomorrow.
-
Good morning, all!
TOD: Coca Cola and Hires Root Beer in bottles, which we always returned. Nothing more outre than Fresca though.
BK, I am hoping to make Sandy's show on Monday, but I won't know until the weekend. Waiting on word of a possible gig. I'll let you know ASAP. :)

EVENT vibes for DR MBARNUM!!!
-
Thanks for the event vibes. It will be a learning experience for all of us, as the group in its 33 years has never put on this big of a to do...and it is the first time they have charged for an event. We are all just mostly worried about people being disappointed in our efforts. Of course, the tickets are only $10 which is pretty darn cheap for dinner and 3 hours of cultural entertainment.

DR Elmore, do you have a recording (CD) of Benjamin Britten's "Hymn to St. Cecelia"?

"Hymn to St. Cecilia" is a great piece, DR Ginny. I have performed it and have perhaps 10 different versions on CD. I am not sure that I could put my hands on any particular one at the moment, however. :P

Yes DR GEORGE indeed it is always nice to be asked.
DR JOHN G - my only problem is that the rehearsals and performances are in January.....and I am NOT a good snow driver....and DePauw is a good 35 miles away.....so I am considering my chances.....
Rehearsals start on January 2 and the last performance is January 26 - so it's a pretty quick process.

Excellent, DR George. That means mine might get here tomorrow, but more likely Saturday. Unless DR Jrand63 got his, too, in which case very likely tomorrow.
What did arrive today was DR Elmore's Jay recording of the complete GUYS AND DOLLS. I can't wait to hear this, but probably will not have the required Quality Alone Time till tomorrow!

And I made a nice killing on some Criterions -- I Married a Witch, Eyes Without a Face, The Uninvited, and a few Eclipse sets of Ozu and Fassbinder, neither of which I really know, but a few people I trust on these matters have said I'll enjoy getting to know them.

Ditto!

Like so many others, I no longer drink Coke (or Pepsi or most other carbonated drinks) but thanks for the update Kevin.

I used to be addicted to Pepsi and now rarely have one and if I do it is the mini sized can. I liked 7-Up as a child and switched to Canada Dry Ginger Ale later on. I also like Orange Crush which I haven't had for years.
Mostly I drink water.

Unsweetened iced tea is my beverage of choice, in case anyone wanted to know!

I know several people who just love the Mexican Coke because it has sugar and not corn syrup. They will be very happy that it doesn't affect the US-bound Coke.
-
My personal beverage choice is diet Pepsi. I probably drank Coke when I was a kid and remember actually taking the Pepsi Challenge. I actually chose Pepsi. And then about 23 years ago or so (somewhere around 1990), I started drinking Diet Rite (the diet version of RC Cola) and liked it. Then I discovered diet Pepsi and never looked back. It's DP for me. Diet Coke from a fountain is an acceptable alternative, but I really don't care for diet Coke in aluminum cans. I just don't like regular (non-diet) colas of any kind anymore. Regular root beer, orange soda, things like that are okay, but not cola.
-
Heaven Can Wait has arrived and is playing right now. Yummy.
-
I don't drink soft drinks very often. But I do like A&W rootbeer (and have it when I eat at Costco). I also like cream soda.
-
Years and years ago Baskin Robbins had rootbeer from the fountain that I would occasionally get. I'm very fussy about my rootbeer and never cared for A&W.
-
I met my friend Sue for dinner at Frisch's and then we went to preview night for the holiday bazaar. It was very festive and I bought 2 decorative items and a loaf of pumpkin bread.
-
At DR Jennifer's urging & Goodreads I have been keeping track of the number of books I've read this year. I set a goal for 150 books and have read 131. Though I am apparently ahead of my goal I wonder how I can reach my year end goal, it seems like so many books yet to read.
I began a book today,"The Making of Henry" I'm either not in the mood for or don't want to finish reading. I decided to purchase a book I've been wanting to read since it was published in 2011, "Iron House" by John Hart.

I began a book today,"The Making of Henry" I'm either not in the mood for or don't want to finish reading. I decided to purchase a book I've been wanting to read since it was published in 2011, "Iron House" by John Hart.
I used to read that many. But since starting grad school, forget it. I'm doing good if I read 1 in a month and listen to three or four.

I'm sure you are reading more than I do with all the work you have for grad school.

November 7, 2013 would have been my parents' 69th wedding anniversary.

That is a lot of books. While I read my usual long books I also read a number of short ones this year.
I'm glad I switched books, IRON HOUSE is good so far.

I guess I kind of answered that before reading this. If I need one extra book at the end I might intentionally read a short book. I prefer to see how many I read without changing my normal reading habits.

Well, I just called the Thurston County Jury Duty line and I'm done with jury duty! I never had to down to the court house and it's all over until the next time...whenever that may be. I kind of wanted to be on a jury, but it didn't happen. I'm sure that there will be a next time. ;D

Internet has been disconnected for most of the evening. Most irritating.

November 7, 2013 would have been my parents' 69th wedding anniversary.
This past September 11th (yes, September 11th) would have been my parents' 64th. And my mom would have been 90, which is almost impossible to imagine. Dad is still alive and kicking -- well, maybe not kicking, but doing well -- at 88.
-
I've always remembered one specific childhood moment -- I guess they were talking about ages, or maybe it was his birthday, but I thought my dad's age, 27, was old, and that I'd never be such a horrible old age myself.

Thank you, DR KevinH, for that follow-up bit of good news! A fitting way to end the day.
I do believe we have just dodged a bullet.
I drink mostly diet (or totally unsweetened) drinks as a rule, nowadays, but the occasional REAL Coke or Pepsi ("Throwback") is an incredibly wonderful treat. (I drank Diet Coke for quite a number of years, until they came out with Zero, a godsend for keeping something decently similar to the REAL taste in my mouth.)

Back from rehearsal - some issues with the keyboard we've been using (until our grand piano arrives on Tuesday) - it just up and quit so we had to wait for a replacement, and then we ran through the one-act version and I do think that's what the show will be as it was surprisingly short, although I still have about five minutes of stuff to add. But if we do this version it will be under eighty minutes, so I suppose that's good.
