Well, you've read the notes, the notes haven't freaked you, you haven't freaked the notes, all is well and well is all and now it is time to post until the freakin' cows come home.
-
Dang! I just finished a long post, submitted it and got the message that it's lost in the ether.
Gizzafratz and ratzandatz.
-
We've been though the Original Cast and Soundtrack albums so I'll go to the "others".
"All I Want To Do In Life" by country singer/song writer Jack Clement is a disc I would really like to have on CD.
Melanie Safka's "Candles In The Rain" is also a CD I would really like to see. It's certainly not available now if it ever was issued.
The Cameo/Parkway recordings of the 60's are well overdue for a "legitimate" release too.

Good Morning!
It was very interesting watching the Olympics coverage tonight. I had caught some of the headlines while I was on-line earlier, and I knew who had won the Gold in the Men's Gymnastics All Around. But as I started watching the competition, I started second-guessing what I had seen on-line due to the way the competition was going. In any case... The situation provided some nice anticipation and excitement for me while watching the competition.

As for Vinyl to CD... I think anything I ever had on vinyl is now - or has been - on CD. However, I do remember buying a couple of heavily discounted LP boxed sets of various classical works at Tower as CDs started taking over more and more shelf space. And I still have those - and a bunch of cast albums... How I miss those large booklets... and not having to squint to look at the pictures.
-
Well, it's almost 3 AM - and here I am. Went to bed early and fell asleep. Yummy. ...Until a neighbor's burglar alarm went off around 1:30. It was LOUD and LONG. (The word should be "LOUND.") That finally ended and I started to fall asleep when the phone rang. DD took me at my word when I told her to let me know that she had arrived safely in Budapest. I forgot to add that the 9 hour time difference should be kept in mind. I was still glad to hear from her, nevertheless. The apartment she and her bf are renting is gorgeous, she tells me. It's very hot in Budapest, she also tells me.
I'm wide awake, I'm telling you.
Albums I cherish: I have a faux Al Jolson album ("A Tribute to... with Fonatana and his Orchestra, vocals by Jimmy Dee) which I used to sing along with and perform to in front of the mirror as a kid.
The original soundtrack recording of REMEMBER MY NAME, featuring Alberta Hunter. She signed the album cover (at the Cookery).
An original soundtrack recording of THE MISFITS and other themes by Alex North.
And a Nichols and May album that is not in my possession at the moment and I must get back.
...It's interesting how looking at an album, touching it, even smelling it, can evoke all sorts of emotions that a CD cannot.
-
Whew! Albums....well okay!
DRPANNI, I also have THE MISFITS soundtrack that features some other Alex North themes on the "b" side. Lots of fun.
And yes, Mr BK - it is correct that having the mic receivers behind "glass" can give you problems. We set ours on the ledge of the loft so they can get a straight signal.
Okay.....
All the Annette LP's (even though she has an official CD Box Set) - because of the pictures and the inserts! Patty Duke Sings Valley of the Dolls (sort of like if Natalie Wood had released a West Side Story LP). An album of the songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang featuring (I think) the Leroy Holmes Chorus & orchestra.
Anita Darian Sings.
And my favorite non-show albums - Eric Burdon and the Animals! All the MGM albums from the 1960's!
-
I like them all - but I will choose Winds of Change - a really wacky and psychedelic LP!
Here is Eric Burdon - with The Animals! :o

I didn't know Dennis Clancy. But his many reviews at Amazon say a lot about him and what he read, listened to, and watched.

The First Nudie Musical
Christmas came early with this DVD, June 28, 2002.
When this little film turned up in 1975 I was living in one of the few cities it was first released to. I remember sitting in a huge theatre with 9 other people and we were all howling our heads off. The run was about 2 weeks and I saw this movie 11 times. In the ensuing years I taped it on cable. My video tape is wearing out and this DVD is like Christmas Day.
The main feature is in remarkably good shape. In an interview writer, director and producer Bruce Kimmel said that the master was literally unusable in some areas. It had to be completely rebuilt. The joys of the digital age. In a nutshell it centers around a movie studio that is going to be reposessed unless they put on a movie that is a success. The brilliant young head of the studio decides a porno nude film would put them in the black. One of the creditors insists that his nephew direct the film. Just the beginning of the trouble. A colorful, funny group of characters sing and dance their way across the screen for 94 minutes. It is a truly funny movie. "Dancing Dildos" is a hoot.
Also on this DVD is the standard photo gallery, theatrical trailer. However a "making" of the film documentary is very funny indeed. Great interviews and film scenes with Cindy Williams, Bruce Kimmel, Stephen Nathan and others associated with the film. Rumor has it that Ms Williams wanted to buy every print of the film after Laverne and Shirley became popular.
Also included in this deluxe package is a cd of the soundtrack. It has a very funny, bright melodious score. In fact, it would make a great Broadway musical. What a novel idea.
If you want to have a fun 2 hours watch "The First Nudie Musical".

LPS: I remember back in the late 1980s when CDs were appearing and records were on the way out. My record player was old and rather...shall we say, shaky. So being young and naive, I decided to get rid of my record player. I mean, I never thought I'd find any "new" records to play. Right? Fast forward six years later. I was now much more into show music and one day I visited the Brand music library in Glendale at a friend's suggestion. I was floored! There were tons of cast albums I never thought I would ever hear or see. The Mad Show, Billy, Dorothy Loudon At The Blue Angel, etc. Unfortunately, they were all LPs!
Oh, how I miss my record player.
-
I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Dennis Clancy. Though I did not know him, I do remember seeing some of his postings on HHW when I first discovered this site about a year ago.
My condolences to all DRs out there who knew/spoke with Mr. Clancy.
-
On a more positive note:
I guess this is my first "solo posting frenzy."
It pays to wake up early! :)
-
I (we) have been putting some LPs to CD thanks to the generosity of a friend and though we now have Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall on CD I won't be getting rid of the album. I also have almost everything Peter, Paul and Mary did on CD (I have a record and a tape to transfer to CD at some point) but I won't get rid of those records either or my Chad Mitchell Trio collection or my Oh, Coward and Cowardy Custard. I have those on CD thanks to two wonderful H/Ks, the upstanding and reliable TomofOz and the lately missing Jason.
-
My phonograph is kaput, yet I won't be getting rid of any records either. I have quite an assortment - folk, OCR, soundtrack, classical, jazz, spoken word. If anyone's looking for something specific, don't hesitate to check with me.
-
i still treasure my Joseph Papp production recording of THE THREEPENNY OPERA with Raul Julia, Ellen Greene, Blair Brown and Tony Azito. i think that the Weill estate is keeping this one off cd.
Jennifer Warnes' self-titled album, which featured her first US hit - "Right Time of the Night," which is the album's weakest cut.
Jennifer Warnes' SHOT THROUGH THE HEART, which has a fine a capella finish with Stephen Foster's "Hard Times, Come Again No More."
I'd like official releases of the Janis Ian Columbia/CBS/Sony catalogue.
I also still treasure two OBCs which were modified for cd:
OVER HERE! and PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES.
-
Figure nothing is as bad as Caroline O'Connor as Aldonza.
Ah, someone who missed the histrionics of Sheena Easton in the role.

Despite the recent new studio cast recording, I will never get rid of the off-Broadwat cast of MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF. Also there are LPs of several Al Carmines musicals which I am sure will never make it to CD (except privately burned ones). I wonder why he stopped writing... perhaps the church he transfered to after the Judson did not want him to have an additional career.
But the 2 LPs I will never part with are two revues that I worked on at Northern Illinois University: THE EN NI YOO SHOW OF 1960 and THE EN NI YOO SHOW OF 1961. After working summer stock, it was good to come back to school and immediately immerse myself in a show as I started class... sort of like an easy transition. The shows (and the LPs) weren't very good, but it was a lot of fun and bring back cherished memories.

I salute Dennis Clancy and Elmer Bernstein, and all they did to try to make this world a better place.
I was very quiet yesterday, and I suppose all I have to say is that I was pretty busy at the office.
Last night, Dear Partner and I, along with two friends, ventured for some chinese food, and then hied ourselves to see a free summertime concert that was the culmination of the Musical Theatre Workshop program at the very well respected Hochstein School of Music in Rochester, NY. The title of the program was "Sondheim Tonight!" with music and lyrics penned by our fearless leader's close personal friend, Stephen Sondheim. There was only one word for this concert:
Atrocious!
Apparently the Musical Theatre Workshop program at the very well respected Hochstein School of Music in Rochester, NY has no problem taking money from students who apparently not only can't hold a tune, but also have only passing acquaintanceships with tune's good friends, pitch and rhythm. And the number of flubbed lyrics was not to be believed.
Needless to say we left at intermission, and returned home to watch the gymnastics. (We went to bed before the competition was over, and boy, was I surprised to read the results in the paper this morning....!)
DR SWW, during the Olympics last night, I also managed to tune into the earlier episode of "Good Eats" and your summary on last night's posts was TOO too funny! It hit it head on!
Favorite LPs that I won't get rid of? Certainly ones that have not yet come out on CD. But others as well....we still have an LP collection, yet a turntable that seems to have broken in our move upstate, and we have not yet fixed.
In the show category, BAKER STREET (a somewhat mediocre score, but a beautiful album).
In the non-show category (and I believe I still have it....otherwise i'll have to smack myself): "George Maharis Sings," which came with its own gold tone plastic framed copy of the cover portrait as a souvenir. I know I no longer have the framed art.....
I am sure I will think of other albums as the day progresses.
OK, I've just thought of two more....even though one of them was recently released on CD:
The Ethel Merman Disco Album
Ethel Merman at Carnegie Hall (this was a private pressing made of her concert benefitting the Museum of the City of New York's Theatre Collection. Since I was working for the Collection at the time, I was given one as a "bonus.")
OK, one more......
I believe it was called "Unsung Broadway" but I am sure it came from someone's pirated collection. It was issued in a plain white sleeve, but features such gems as Georgia Brown doing "Job Application" (cut from BALLROOM) and a through-the-sound-system recording of Debbie Reynolds doing "Who Would Have Dreamed?" (Added to WOMAN OF THE YEAR for Welch, and then Reynolds). It has some other great stuff, which I can't recall right now.
-
My, that was a long post from me!
-
I was wrong wrong wrong.
David Campbell was so right right right.
Beautiful performance. A Billy I believed in and felt for.
Great vocally and a sensitive handling of the role.
-

Yes! The Papp Threepenny Opera has been one of my favorites since it was first released. Aside from the wonderful performances, it's the only Columbia release (that I know of) that was recorded in that "SQ" quadrophonic sound that doesn't sound awful when played on a normal stereo. I guess we'll be waiting in vain for this one to make it to CD. In the meantime, I made my own copy.
I was likewise deeply disappointed in the Over Here! CD release. The Big Band sound of the LP recording is missing--everything sounds flat. And Patty Andrews "Where Did the Good Times Go" replaced with a pop version of the song. What was Sony Masterworks thinking when they transfered this one for CD?
Those with newsgroup access (and cable internet access) should check out alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.musicals. That's all I will say about that.
-
For the DRs who posted about mourning their record players -- why not buy a new one? I bought one a couple of years ago to replace the one I got rid of many years ago, and it was pretty inexpensive. (Okay, it's not a great one, but it plays the records -- a better idea than trying to run my finger nails along the grooves...)

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]!I LOVE FREAKS![/move]
Everytime I hear the word freaks, I'm reminded of the awful lyrics in Side Show:
"Come look at the freaks
Come gape at the geeks
Come examine these aberrations
Their malformations
Grotesque physiques
Only pennies for peeks
Come look at the freaks
Come look at the freaks
They'll haunt you for weeks
Come explore why they fascinate you
Exasperate you
And flush your cheeks
Come hear how love speaks
Come look at the freaks"
I'm guessing that one of the missing lines here is:
"What else rhymes with freaks?"
-
Thank you for posting the Dennis Clancy review of Nudie Musical, Dan in TO. I, too, found some of his reviews on Amazon, and they do say a great deal about the man. I wish I'd had the pleasure of knowing him.
-
Yes, I've been toying with getting a new turntable for over a year now, and I've just never sat down and ordered it. It would make life SO much easier to have it rather than the combo unit I have now which has a defunct CD player in it and dual tape players which play but can't record any more. But the turntable part of it still works fine.
-
As for LPs I treasure, I know you folks are SICK TO DEATH of my mentioning it, but I have one LP that I prize above all others:
STARS OF THE SILVER SCREEN 1929-1930. It's on RCA Victor, and if I think about it I'll scan part of it this afternon so you can see what I've been talking about and boring you folks with for months on end.
As for OBCs, I really prize those glistening foil covers of ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY and A CHORUS LINE even though the CDs have better sound and, with the latest ACL, more material. I also think the CAMELOT original cast LP with that blue half sheet inside is one of the classiest original cast albums ever issued. It just LOOKS regal.
-
I forgot another LP that I would never let go: My SWEENEY TODD set, autographed by Miss Lansbury and Mr. Cariou.
-
I forgot another LP that I would never let go: My SWEENEY TODD set, autographed by Miss Lansbury and Mr. Cariou.
Actually, I guess that means that I remembered it.....
-
I think I am making up for my lurking self yesterday......
-
I have always found FREAKS a very affecting and involving movie, but I can't put it on the highest rung because of the truly awful Olga Baclanova. It's not just her poor command of the English language; I think she's a miserable actress telegraphing reactions and emotions so badly as to be laughable. I guess Norma Shearer wasn't available! :D
-
I posted the following sentiments late last night, but they disappeared in a flurry of etheraporation:
After watching last night's Gymnastics "All Around" for men, it occurred to me that the Winter Olympics -- and indeed, the sport of figure skating -- should adopt a broader field of competitions. Skaters practice as hard as gymnasts, and at ages just as young, and it seems silly to deprive "specialists" from recognition.
For all disciplines (ladies, men, pairs and dance), there should be "team" competition in which every country that qualifies to send three competitors in each discipline may participate. Each participant performs a set of routines (to be proscribed by whatever goverrning body might oversee it), the scores are added up and the three highest scores win the medals. Next would come the "all-around" which would be basically what we have now -- individual competitors going through their respective programs to arrive at ultimate winners (individual bests, as it were). Finally, there would be individual competitions -- and I'm just imagining a jumping competition that involved quads for men, triple-combinations for all, and straight line footwork. Each would be worth a medal in each discipline. This would be much more fair, and rewarding, for skaters who work every bit as hard as gymnasts who, as it turns out, get all the opportunities to "medal" that I've detailed above.
-
Thanks to Forry J Ackerman of Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine, I am too pre-freaked-out to watch Freaks. I remember reading articles of his in which he would go on and on about how it was THE most disturbing movie that he had ever seen, and coming from Ackerman that carries a lot of weight. I'm afraid that if buy the DVD that it will just sit up on the shelf, unwatched and taunting.

I just think the Olympics should be done naked. Summer, winter--all of it.

Rest in Peace, dear departed Hainsie. Reminds me, my sister's temple had a sale on burial plots to raise money for the youth program - I guess churches hold bake sales... - anyway, I bought one next to grandma and grandpa, and my mom and dad's plots and sister and her hubby plot - such togetherness. We'll always have enough folks down under there for a picnic, if we want. Oy. Stangely comforting, however...
Where was I? Oh - album I just love and will never get rid of: my original cast Jacques Brel is Alive and Well. A dear friend gave it to me when I was a young actress in LA - he also insisted I take singing lessons, took me to his singing teacher, and encouraged me to audition for Juilliard and then, to move to New York. We are still good friends lo, these many years later. He just had his 67th birthday. Was all that too much information????
BK - critics just ARE. Some of them can't sing, and are pissed at those of us who can. Some hate the theater, and look for "good reasons" to justify their animosity. More of them truly love the theater and seek pleasure, there in the dark. A review is less about the work of art than it is about the person writing... sometimes people just had a bad oyster at dinner... or a fight with their elderly, too- demanding parents... or just fell in love unexpectedly. What we see and react to is what we're looking for... like the old quantum physics conundrum: is it a wave or a particle??? Answer: what do you want it to be?
-
MattH: One of the things we find out in the extras on the Freaks DVD is that the Olga part was originally given to Myrna Loy who ran screaming into the night after she read the script.
-
Oh, and FREAKS - too upsetting the one time I saw it a hundred years ago, to ever want to see it again. Of course, I did think that of Fantasia... decades later I wondered what had upset me...
And I'm just hanging around here, waiting for the tying up of all loose ends, and then I get to move back to New York!!! Oh, the waiting!
-
...the truly awful Olga Baclanova.
That's funny, 'cause now and again I like a nice piece of Baclanova with a hot cup of tea.
-
Thanks for the info, BK. I'll look forward to getting the DVD at some point. Myrna, of course, would have been wonderful in the film, but, I guess in an odd way, Olga fits right in with the other "freaks." The problem is that she doesn't mean to!
-
LPs: I have nearly 1,000 LPs on shelves in my apartment. I'd love to have storage for them that didn't make them part of my everyday life, but I don't. And they ARE up front and center in my life.
They are mostly soundtracks, with some Broadway thrown in. My pop albums and classical LPs and rock records are all in storage. That's another 500 or so, I fear. Most are in near-mint condition. Some would fetch some bucks on eBay, I reckon.
But I won't sell, I tell you! No! Don't ask it!
I have, of all things, a Hungarian turntable. Or is it "an" Hungarian turntable?
I bought it several years ago through a specialist catalog. I have never been without my turntable or my records...not in 40-something years, except for the 5 1/2 years I spent on aircraft carriers. Then, I had recorded several hundred of my LPs onto cassette tapes, so I had my music with me always.
One very special LP I enjoy that hasn't made it to CD is the Richard Harris "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" recording. I truly enjoy this recording.
There are scores of soundtracks that have not made it to CD and I have them available to me, as well.
A couple of treasures:
An LP of "Hello, Dolly!" autographed by Carol Channing and Jerry Herman.
An LP of "The Main Event" autographed by Barbra Streisand.
An LP of "Mary, Queen of Scots" autographed by John Barry.
-
I agree with you, DR RLP, and at the very least the art of "tracing figures" should be recognized in the Olympics, as much a specialty and requiring just as much concentration as synchronized swimming and diving or as much as practicing the jump combinations.
DR Dan-t-M, I know your post about naked Olympics was only half in jest, but I wouldn't want to be an skater attempting to do those quads and triples without a dance belt or athletic supporter where the family jewels are kept. Argh!
-
I think perhaps today's DVD will be PRICK UP YOUR EARS. Not a light bit of entertainment, but I'm in the mood for it. Will probably put it on after lunch.
-
DR Dan-t-M, I know your post about naked Olympics was only half in jest, but I wouldn't want to be an skater attempting to do those quads and triples without a dance belt or athletic supporter where the family jewels are kept. Argh!
Yeah, I've been thinking it over, too. I've come up with close to a dozen events I wouldn't want to see done naked, either. Plus, there's the probability that the athletes would have to have Nike tattooed to various parts of their bods.
-
I love FREAKS and picked up the DVD when it came out the other week. I have only watched the extras so far. It is a bit difficult to understand some of the performers at times...some because of heavy accents and some because they don't speak very clearly, but it is still a fascinating film.
-
Myrna Loy would have been great in FREAKS! Has anyone seen her in 13 WOMEN? She is wonderful as the evil woman plotting the death of her former sorority sisters!
Seems to me that Olga Baclanova went a little loopy in her later years...or maybe that was Helen Chandler...or maybe it was both of them! LOL!
-
I agree with you, DR RLP, and at the very least the art of "tracing figures" should be recognized in the Olympics...
Doing away with the cumpulsories, as they were called, was the stupidest decision ever made by the IOC. Or the Figure Skating Association. Whichever one was responsible.
I still recall Dorothy Hamill tracing figures on the ice with what seemed like 6 or 7 judges hovering around her. And, as memory serves, the cumpolsaries were done on outdoor ice. But I think that '76 was the last year those skills were part of the judges' scores.
-
I am now the proud owner of some Roots Canadian Olympic wear.
Btw, re: NBC's coverage of gymnastics last night, WHY did they end it so late? I could see 11pm. But it ended WAY past that. I already knew who won. But I really wanted to see it and ended up taping the end because I was too tired.
-
For all BB watchers, it has not been too interesting since the twin twist was revealed.
But I believe they are voting live this Thursday.
-
I didn't write anything about TAR (The Amazing Race) yesterday. Because I wasn't sure if DR MBarnum had watched it yet.
But what did you guys think about the team who was eliminated. I was NOT happy.
-
Big Brother America's choice.
WE VOTE to choose who will be on an episode of The Young & The Restless.
http://jam.canoe.ca/JamBigBrother5/aug19_bb5-can.html
Okay BB watchers, who should we choose?
-
Thanks to all DRs for posting their thoughts about Dennis. I unfortunately can't attend his memorial service tomorrow, but I've let his friends and family know about your posts here, as well as many nice posts about him on Max Preeo's CASTRECL listserve, after I let that group know as well about Dennis' passing.
Dennis had a very wry sense of humor, which is apparent in his reviews/posts. He had just started rehearsals for "Three Angels," based on the old Bogie movie. I still can't believe that I must have been one of the last, if not the last, people to talk to him last Saturday. How ephemeral it all seems.
LPs: Well I have tons of LPs, too, that I will never discard. I have a great copy of "Parade" (the Jerry Herman one), autographed by Jerry, the entire cast, as well as the pianists. I have several great Sergio Mendes records autographed with great gusto and a lot of personal info by Sergio and his gracious wife, the aptly named Gracinha Leporace. But the most treasured LP I have is Frances Farmer Swings Fats Domino. :o (That's a little inside joke for JR).
-
But what did you guys think about the team who was eliminated. I was NOT happy.
I wasn't either. But blame it all on screwed up airline schedules. IT was out of their hands, 'cause mark my words, if their plane was on time, they would not have been eliminated.
And the change in Adria/Natalie on BB5? I think I have seen this somewhere before...DEAD RINGER with Bette Davis?? Marlena and her sister on DAYS OF OUR LIVES? Very disappointed with the two of them.....and some pretty shlocky playing on their parts, because now they really are targeted. They could have had a nice, fun house for another week or two......but NO!
-
I also still treasure two OBCs which were modified for cd:
OVER HERE! and PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES.
And from what I understand, Coco was also modified for the CD release...or were there two different album releases? I know there was of Lorelei and the CD is the combination of the two different albums.
I can't think off the top of my head what albums that I have that I'd love to have on CD. I just know that I've never gotten rid of an album unless I have two copies of it. I've gotten CDs of albums that I own and still have them all.
-
Thanks for all the well wishes. They seem to be working.
Bogie is keeping to himself today. I guess that is good since I have way too much to do before I leave here at 5:00 tomorrow morning. He is eating well and I’m sure will be back to cuddling this evening. Between Keith & I we spent an hour this morning doing his favorite activity, brushing him.
Panni I’m glad DD has arrived safely in Budapest. :)
I still listen to LP’s. Sorry I must go.
-
I have to leave the home environment for a while. Keep the home fries burning.
-
I am pretty sure that both Coco and Applause had two different LP releases, the originals of each which were quickly withdrawn when the leads' vocals did not meet with said leads' approval. A long time ago someone told me how to tell the two different Coco's--I believe the only way to tell was to look at the "runoff" on the wax and see the two different matrix numbers.
The CD releases of both of these are the second, lead-approved versions, I'm pretty sure.
-
LOL DR Jennifer, I am always a day late on The Amazing Race cause it is on so late and I just have to tape it and then watch it! But I have now watched it and, yes, I too was not happy about the team that was eliminated...and yes, if their plane had not been delayed they would surely have not been eliminated.
It was pretty neat to see Phil get so chocked up over them! I like that.
And you know, I DO NOT like Colin and I DO NOT like the twins (even though they are from Oregon!)..
-
...and as for Big Brother...yes, Adria and her sister have turned evil, haven't they! And Diane sure seems to have torn herself away from her old team! Yikes!
I really don't want Will or Marvin to be voted off, but I guess one of them has to go and if I had to choose I would vote off Marvin.
-
... and if I had to choose I would vote off Marvin.
Ditto.
-
And from what I understand, Coco was also modified for the CD release...or were there two different album releases? I know there was of Lorelei and the CD is the combination of the two different albums.
I'm not exactly sure of the details, but after the Coco OCR LP was released, Hepburn was disenchanted with it and asked the lable to remix and/or re-do some tracks. Unbelievably, they did. The CD is a transfer of the latter release (which I think is the better of the two.)
Some LPs I'm glad I have: the aforementioned Joe Papp Three Penny Opera, the '74 Candide revival, the zonked-out Electric Carmen (the opera, not the Miranda), Lily Tomlin's Modern Scream, The Best of the Warner Brothers (or something like that--it's the three disc, silver boxed set), the soundtrack to An Unmarried Woman, and a few disks by pre-Goth, post-punk popstar Lena Lovich.
During the past few years I've made some great eBay purchases: Paul Sill's Story Theatre, Lolita, My Love, Drat, The Cat, The Mad Show, Gordon Jenkin's Manhattan Tower, and just two weeks ago, The Rose Tattoo with Maureen Stapleton.
The last LP I purchased new was The Mystery of Edwn Drood OCR (which, coincidentally, was the first cast recording on CD I bought.)
-
The only record player I remember having was made by Fisher-Price. My brother used to listen to Bill Cosby records on it. We don't have the record player any more. As I recall, my brother broke it.

Charla and Mirna were my favorite team. I know some people didn't like Mirna. But I thought she was very nice to her cousin. And I also thought she was extremely smart.
Most of the other women on the show right now, seem weak. But Mirna was always pushing the limits and trying to find ways to win.
It really bugged me how all the other teams tried to gang up on her.
The only way they ever did anything was when they realized Mirna was gone. How many times did we hear teams say, "where is mirna?" only to realize that she was off making new reservations some where.
I also dislike colin. And thankfully in the preview it looks like they want to arrest him. :)
What a baby he was in the eating contest.

Did I reveal my ignorance by saying "record player" instead of turntable? For some reason, the term "turntable" is not in my vocabulary. I always refer to it as a record player -- which, I guess, technically it isn't. Oh well. I'll try harder next time, I promise.

RE: BB
I actually like Adria and Natalie. Although I think Adria made some very poor choices this week. I believe she didn't want to nominate Cowboy. But she should have discussed her noms with Girl Power. I get why Jen/Karen/Will are mad at her.
Although I'm really not liking Will anymore. He's really turning into a brat.
I am a big fan of Y&R, so I'm trying to decide who I'd like to see on that show.
I think Will would be funny (assuming he doesn't get voted out this week).
Cowboy and Jennifer would be weird.
Maybe I'll vote for Adria or Drew.
It would be funny if both twins could appear. Now that would be really a hoot, since they people they will be appearing with are Michael and Phyllis (who are a real hoot themselves).
Who will you guys vote for?
-
Re: BB5 -- I'm going to be a bit different and say I choose Will.
Marvin has the better chance at exacting a plan of revenge.
If Marvin wins HOH, I feel certain he'll solidify things with Karen and Jennifer; Drew and Diane would probably fold into his plan, too. I think he'd put up both twins and tell them it's time for them to step up to the plate and show folks what they're made of (which is what Adria told Marvin and Will).
Diane is a deceitful little thing...she sees Will for the threat he is to all of them and I'm sure she wants "likable" folks to be gone. That's her only chance to succeed.
Whoever goes tonight will enter the jury pool.
Whoever goes tonight will set the tone for how the voting will go at the end.
Neither Marvin nor Will is likely to support Adria or Natalie in the future.
I think Adria cut her own throat...and I can't help but wonder, slack-jawed and agape, at who the hell she thinks she's been kidding with er pre-veto-selection double-talk she spewed about being willing to use the veto on either of the guys if only they would talk to her and prove to her they wanted to stay. Her logic is amazingly dull-edged and warped.
And she's totally stupid to think Drew and Diane are allies...they'd slit her throat if she gave them a chance (and she's made a step in that direction with her nominations).
-
Re: Big Brother, I think Drew and Diane were her allies (in the all twins alliance). But diane keeps changing her mind back and forth!
I believe that Cowboy wants to vote Will out (and I thought he hated Marvin). It will be interesting to see if Drew follows him.

I won't spoil this for anybody, but re: the Olympics, there is a very interesting disqualification story today with a fairly prominent athlete.

Hey! I have one of those, too. What a co-inky dink. (Or maybe not.)

Good Morning!
After staying up late last night, I let myself stay in bed a bit longer than has been my usual lately this morning. -Boy, that sentence is kind of convoluted! ;) -Besides, it's not like I had to be anywhere this morning...
However, I have been taking some time this morning making a second pass through my pile of bills and other mail I got yesterday just to make sure I didn't overlook something. Thankfully, I didn't miss anything, and I was able to get some advance organizing and planning done.
Well, that's about it for me for now...
Laters...

OH! Did any other DR catch the footage of Michael Jackson on his way to the court house yesterday? He was accompanied by his two sisters, and, I swear, it looked like Janet Jackson's "shades" were actually "blinders". I thought she was wearing a sleep mask! -And from the way she was holding on to Michael and being guided by the bodyguard behind her... Hmm....
-Just a random observation...

Just received word that my brother Jeff is leaving for Iraq on Sunday. He works for the federal govt in Portland and was over in Iraq for about 6 months last year working as an engineer (which is what he is for the govt.). Anyway, he has volunteered to go back and help out some more (rebuilding govt buildings and bridges). Our family is not very happy about his decision, but I understand it. He wants to be able to help out both our country and the people of Iraq, who he had a chance to get to know when he was there last...however, it was slightly safer over there last time he went!
I am proud of him for doing this, but sure wish he wasn't going...my nephew Jeffrey (brother Allen's son) is already over there with the National Guard and my cousin Bobby is over there with the Army (although I think Bobby is actually stationed in Saudi Arabia).

I don't say this to be an alarmist, but because I think you should acknowledge the danger your brother is facing:
If there is anything that you want to say to your brother, face-to-face, that you've never said, or that you would regret never being able to say again, do it before he leaves.

I won't spoil this for anybody, but re: the Olympics, there is a very interesting disqualification story today with a fairly prominent athlete.
If it was a swimmer, I think you'll find the DQ has been overturned and Gold has been restored to him.
-
DR RLP, I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't watched yet. But I did see the final results of what I was talking about.

DR RLP, I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't watched yet. But I did see the final results of what I was talking about.
I reiterate:
A DQ that stripped a swimmer of gold today has been OVERTURNED, and that swimmer now has the gold.
If that's not the event you're referring to, I haven't found any news on it yet.
-
Dan (the man) the picture with Forry - a childhood hero, if that's what you want to call the man who made me a "monster baby" - was taken the last weekend in June of this year at the Day's Inn in Butler, PA, home of the Monster Bash.

I'm not sure I understand--exactly what kind of power does Dairy Queen wield over the Olympics? As far as I know, they are not even a sponsor.

DR RLP, IMO what you wrote is a spoiler. Yes I am aware of what you are saying. I was just trying to make my point without giving anything away.

Speaking of Dairy Queen, I never go there. But there is one beside a dollar store I go to. And DQ has these ads in Canada (not sure if you guys have them too) for a brownie blizzard. Well I just had to try one. Very good!

Then, the guy in the tutu jumps into the pool.
Now, there are Drag Queens stripping in Athens!
What have these games come to????

That's a spoiler, too, non? : )

Did someone say GOLDEN BOY had two different issues with Sammy Davis re-recording his solo numbers? If not, he did. I never had the original issue, just the reissue. (Never been one of my favorite Strouse scores, though I know others love it.) It's VERY odd to hear him sound so good in the solos and so raspy on the ensemble numbers.

The first thing I thought of was Dance A Little Closer, but the guy is alone. It looks like a Sinatra kind of guy, with a press pass in his hat. Any significance about his dancing over Japan?

That's funny, brother dearest. I don't recall seeing you at Korvette's the day I had mine signed..... ;)
I dressed incognito (huge fly-eye sunglasses, big kerchief--think Jackie O. on a stroll in Central Park) to ward off the paparazzi that day.

It resembles Guy Haines. It has his facial features.

It's the music video, suppressed until now, that Paula Abdul did for MTV to a rock version of "It's A Small World."
-
Here's the top half of that LP that I prize so much. After all these years of having scanners, I've never been able to stitch two scans together to make a single picture. I know my softwarer should be able to do it, but how is beyond me. (But I'm going to search for some help so at some point I will one day be able to do this.

Matt, I do this, but I have to scan my albums at least FOUR times and manually patch them together. I think I do a pretty darned good job of it, if I do say so myself...which I just did. ;) There have been a few where I've had to scan as many as six or seven times on each side to make it all look good.
-
By the way....DR Jennifer is totally correct about my info being a spoiler.

Oh, please. No names were mentioned, and there is more than one famous name taking part in the swimming today. And frankly, when I logged onto AOL a few minutes ago, the story was staring me in the face.

It looks like it's from one of the production numbers in Absolute Beginners to me. Or Moulin Rouge. Or Absolute Rouge.

I never post links because I'm not sure how. So consider the above a test. It's about musical theatre.
-
Wow. That seems to have worked.
I, for one, love Golden Boy - consider it Charles Strouse's finest work. But I only know the LP version.
-
Not at home, but at work. Yes indeed Coco had two different LP releases. The CD uses the 2nd release. When I get home I will post the differences.
-
Noel, as was posted up a bit, Golden Boy, like these others we've been talking about, actually had two LP releases. I can't remember which is the first and which is the second, but one of them has the show logo on the cover (and is the gatefold, IIRC), while the second has the drawing of Sammy on the cover. BK can probably verify, but I believe the CD reproduces the second LP, with the retakes on the lead vocals. What is it with these uppity actors who need to retake their vocals? :o (That's an inside joke for Noel).
-
PRICK UP YOUR EARS looks quite good on DVD and sounds good, too. I saw a grainy, faded print at a revival theater some years back, so this DVD is the best I've ever seen it look or sound. It's widescreen and enhanced for 16 X 9s (the flip side has a full frame version.)
-
Ah, the LP I'm so fond of has an abstracted picture of a boxer, not someone recognizable as Sammy Davis Jr.
-
I seem to recollect that a couple of DRs (along with myself) were fans of short lived tv series GREG THE BUNNY...so I am happy to announce that is coming to DVD very soon! Hurray!
-
Also I am happy to report that I have gotten both Laurie (Attack of the Puppet People) Mitchell and Cal (Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter) booked for the October Hollywood memorablia show to be held in Burbank California (no more Beverly Garland Hotel)!! And once more I am going to attend!! So if any DRs are in the area stop in and visit me at Laurie and Cal's tables!!
Also in attendance will be Ms. Mamie Van Doren, Ms. June Wilkinson, Mr. Ty Hardin, Mr. Reb Brown, Mr. Mark Goddard and Ms. June Lockhart, among many others!!
-
Did BK or Guy Haines get their dvd of THE APPLE? The photo looks almost like an out take from that glorious musical.
-
I think my toe is infected.
Can I get a communal "ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" (à la Kate Monster) from the Hainsies and Kimlets?
-
Ah, So. The mystery of the photo is not something you were hoping to learn, eh, BK? You know the answer and are posing a challenge?
Is it an album cover for an LP?
-
In memory of dear reader Dennis, I would like to repeat his last post to this site!
November 15, 2003
"I have about 400 cast albums and some that are on LP.
Living in a 500 sq ft one bedroom apt with all of this isn't easy. I moved here over 5 years ago and it is still in boxes.
I started collecting theatre programs in 1959. I have just about every road company and every Playbill from every show I saw in New York in my collection. I envy BK keeping his ticket to "Follies". I didn't do that but I do have the program.
I have collected Theatre World over the years and finally have the complete collection of close to 60 years. When times get hard I toy with the idea of putting them on Ebay but I just can't part with them.
I also have 8X10's of various celebrities all of them autographed. I have a picture and letter from Vivien Leigh. I suspect she only signed the letter but hey...
I also have a letter from an actor by the name of Edmund Gaynes. I had sent him a fan letter and he responded with a two or 3 page letter. I believe in the 80's he was directing a few TV shows.
I also have a plethora of plays and theatre books.
One of these days I will have to clean house but until then....."
-

LOL: I see. Okay. Of course, I wouldn't have gone looking if mention hadn't been made about a disqualification.
That's a spoiler, too, non? : )
Oh, I didn't realize you had gone looking for the information. For some reason I thought you had watched it or heard about it on your own.
I suppose it could be considered a spoiler. But since I didn't say what sport, or who, or how the situation was resolved, I think it was vague enough.
Btw, the disqualification I am VERY upset about is the Canadian rowers. They are awaiting the verdict about whether they will be allowed to compete in the finals. It's heartbreaking to watch them talk about how much of their lives they've given up to do the sport.
(they were disqualified for going into another team's lane in the last second).
-
No, I was asked what it was from and I need to provide an answer. I've never seen Absolute Beginners - does anyone have it and, if so, can someone check it. It would make sense as it looks like a newer film and it's scope.
-
I bought an Audiotronics Record Player ( 8-D ) - on EBAY for about $50 including handling and it plays my LPS very well! There are usually a lot of them on there.
I will next post a photo of my favorite LP not on CD. I thought about it all day, had to work a LOT and didn't have time to post.
But as soon as I find a photo....it will be HERE.....
-
I'll be on my way to the theater shortly - we simply must keep the home fries burning.

Here it is from 1968 on Tower Records....the soundtrack for

-
I've tried to live my life not regretting anything - what's done is done. But the last post of DR Dennis Clancy makes me ashamed and embarrassed that I threw out 40 years of theater programs -- collected since I was a kid -- when I moved back to LA. I remember the moment when I said "*%#@ this!" and made the decision to toss them. I was exhausted and packing up a huge house by myself -- about to move into a much smaller place. I had lost patience and was working on pure adrenalin and nothing else. A bit of advice to all the DRs - don't make decisions at such a time. I threw out huge chunks of my past with those playbills. And I TRULY regret it.

Evening all. I’m sorry I was E & T yesterday. Today was a very important day for me and I had a lot to do last night. The interviews were held for the lady who is retiring and I have been beside myself with worry about who they were going to pick to be her replacement.
Whoever the person was going to be is someone I will be working closely with and it had me a tad worried. I hardly slept last night. The bed was totally torn apart with sheets and the other pillow thrown this way and that. Even Bear woke me up and wanted outside. I guess he wanted to get away from me. For the first time, I lost my bit.
When Bear woke me up and I let him out, I realized I didn’t have it and couldn’t remember if I had even had it in my mouth when I went to bed. I had to go into the bathroom to see if it was in the cup, which it was not. I finely found it in my bed.
Anyway, back to the interview. There was only one person on the list that I knew and liked. I hoped against hope she would be the one chosen. It all worked out, I’m happy to say because she was indeed the one they picked. Whew! You have no idea as to how I feel right now. It’s like a big weight has been lifted off my back but right now I also feel so very, very tired. I think I’ll sleep good tonight.
I didn’t know DR Dennis but I wish to offer his family and friends my most sincere condolences in their time of grief.
PennyO, I also have my grave bought as well as my coffin. Mom and I fought for years about it. I’m of the opinion that if the pioneers buried their loved ones on the trail in the sure and certain hope that they would be together again in Heaven, then why would it make any difference that she and Dad were buried in Pittsburgh and I was here in Tampa (or where ever I wind up)? I couldn’t see paying the shipping charges to Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is NOT my home. I’ve never lived there. Since Dad is in the Military section, I couldn’t even be buried in that same section. She kept it up until I finely said, “Fine, I’ll call and ask how close I could be and how much!”
To make a long story short, the sales guy said I couldn’t have timed it better because a pair of graves had be given up two days before I called and only 3 or 4 over from where Dad was buried and it turned out I could buy them even though I’m not a vet. I gave up at that point and bowed to Fate.
My only concern is that I am still not 100% sure what will happen to that 2nd grave. I mean, if I never marry (and that is very likely) and I die, what happens to it? Do I get a refund? ???
Let’s change the subject, huh? Did anyone see this?
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/West/08/18/bear.beer.reut/index.html
I don’t want to be around when he wakes up. Imagine the hangover he has!
I still have a record player but I rarely use it. I switched almost everything over to CDs. I still have the LP’s. Someplace.
Glad to hear that Bogie is doing better. More vibes to him and Mom, Jane. [move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~~~~~~~~[/move]
I heard from DR Elmore. He is having a rough time of it right now. More healing vibes to him! Be well! [move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [/move]

Of course I can ID it. It's even says what it is: Globe.jpg How simple was that?! ;D

Oh yes, I have a plot in the family cemetery at Sugar Creek....it is a beautiful location with an old brick & frame church. All of my maternal relatives are buried there....and my head will rest among them.

You want "togetherness"?? Follow this: My sister's ex-parents-in-law bought four plots, two for them and two for their daughter, Valerie, and her husband. My parents went to look at them and decided to buy two for themselves. My sister (who used to be married to Valerie's brother) and her boyfriend Larry went and decided to buy FOUR! One each for them, one for her daughter (my niece Hilary) and one for me (it actually was a Christmas present to me)! Both sides of my niece's family (her parents divorced but not the grandparents...they stayed close friends) are all going to be buried together!

It's a sad day for us here in Rehoboth. We had to take Kelsey, our nineteen-year-old daschund, to the vet and say goodbye.
Old age had taken it's toll on the feller. His legs couldn't support him any more, and he was having trouble breathing. His suffering was more psychological than physical, but the quality of his life was ebbing away, and there was no hope of recovery. Der Brucer was with him at the end.
We also took Marty in to see the vet, just for a check-up. Marty has a bum ticker, and we wanted the doc to familiarize himself with the problem before Marty really does have problems.
Der Brucer is holding up fairly well; Kelsey was always more his dog than mine. The bandage on der B's hand is from where a chihuahua bit him, while we were in the waiting room.
-
I am so sorry to hear about Kelsey, S. Woody and der Brucer. And I hope Marty is OK.
-
Kelsey had a great pair of dads, der Brucer and S. Woody.
He had a great life, too, and I know he loved you more than anything.
-
Thank you Danise and GREAT NEWS! Interesting news story on the beeracoholic. :-\
-
Sorry to hear about Kelsey, DB and SWW. Sounds like he had a great life, though.
-
Wonderful Page 5 dance, MS!
-
DerBrucer and SWW, condolences from our family to yours. We know how much you are hurting. It is now that you must remember he had a very good life with you.
Please watch your hand very carefully for an infection. Dog bites can become very serious on the hand-I know from personal experience.
-
MS that is a great dance. Earlier there was just a red x. :)
-
All this talk of cemetery plots reminds me of an episode of KING OF KENSINGTON (a Canadian sitcom) I wrote years ago. It had to do with the mother of the leading character, a Jewish widow, who, after many years of widowhood, remarries a man who is also a widower. One day she is looking at the mail and sees a bill for him from the Shady Acres Cemetery. She asks about it and he explains that it's for the annual upkeep fee for the plots. "The plots??"
"Yes, mine and Rochelle's."
Well, it turns out that he and his first wife, Rochelle, had bought twin plots.
"And who'll lie next to me... If I die?" his present wife asks.
He says he always assumed that she also had a plot with her first mate.
"No, with us it was pay as you go," she tells him.
(I'm astonished that almost 30 years later I still remember the dialogue!)
Anyway, a huge argument ensues which almost breaks up the marriage.
I'm sure this isn't such a far-fetched scenario. It must happen fairly often with people who remarry late in life.
-
Der Brucer and SWW I am so very sorry to hear about Kelsey! How sad, and I know it must be a very difficult time for you guys right now.
Freddy and I are sending our best vibes your way! :'(
-
DerBrucer and Woody, I'm sorry to hear about Kelsey. I guess you both have been expecting this day was coming but it still can't be easy.
And DerBrucer, I second Jane's concern about your hand. If the skin was broken you really need to have it looked at.
-
My good friend Jean has been widowed twice. Her first husband was killed in a plane crash, and his remains are in a Toronto cemetery. Her second husband died about 25 years ago, and his ashes are in an urn in Jean's closet. Jean was wondering recently who she'll wind up next to - Don (#1) or George (#2). Someone in the group asked who treated her better. "No question," Jean answered. "George." And thus she made up her mind.
-
Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time, Der Brucer and SWW.
-
DR Panni,
Your story reminds me of this one.
A gentleman is visiting his wife's grave, and from nearby he hears a man sobbing uncontrollably.
"Oh why did you die?" the man cries. "Why, why, why, why did you die?"
This goes on for some time, and finally the first man walks over to the mourner. "I'm so sorry for your loss, he says. "I've never heard such grief in my life. This person must have been very, very dear to you."
"Never met the guy in my life," the man responds.
"Really? Then who is buried here?"
"My wife's first husband," he answers.

Hi, Gunther,
How've you been?
-
DIT ;D
Panni, according to Hillside Mortuary, not so uncommon.
My parents are not together. My father couldn't handle buying two spots and my uncle didn't push it. I wish I had been there! I'm lucky something opened around the corner from my mother.
I think my ashes are going to Mt Ashland.

Today is Bette Davis Day on TCM, but I have either seen all of the ones they're showing or have them in my possession already. So, to honor Bette, I put on the laserdisc of THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER, one of her films NOT being shown today on TCM.
Always have loved this film as uninspired as the direction is. Thoroughly enjoyed it all over again.

Goodnight. Off to finish packing for Portland. :)
Soon I will meet most of the NW Pacific gang.
TCB I will miss you.
-
Sorry about the loss, guys. But I'm sure you can think back on years and years of beautiful memories and be sustained by them.

Storm headed this way!
Tomorrow night I am seeing NUNSENSE!

That's very sad news, Woody. :'(

My former supervisor Norma was originally from Pennsylvania. Her family (she had two parents and a brother) moved to Washington when she was in high school. They had four burial plots in Pittsburgh. Her father died and her mother took his body back east to be buried. When her brother died (in a logging accident...he was a logger), he was buried here in Washington. Since then her mom has said that she does NOT want to be buried in Pennsylvania, she wants to be buried here next to her son! Norma and her husband Gary have since gotten plots for themselves. They have three unused plots in Pennsylvania! But, it's real estate. The value just goes up and up!

Minx and td send sympathetic vibes to Delaware in memory of Kelsey.

Enough already about cemetery plots! Depressing!
Let's move on to cremation.

My mom and I want to be cremated...but not at the same time. ;)

My sister and my dad want to be buried.

The Page Six Danse Macabre!

I was just reading Playbill's (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/87965.html) bio/obit for Elmer Bernstein and it had something in it that I had never known (among much that I had never known). It said:
Mr. Bernstein was conductor for one season of the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra. He also helped to found the record label, Varese Sarabande, according to the Internet Movie Database.
Who knew? Not I.
-
Hi, Dan! I'm fine, thank you! My new work schedule keeps me off line way too much. I read whenever I can. My latest trip to Toronto was to see one of the last performances of THE PRODUCERS. Loved it.

The Page Six Danse Macabre!
Clever! LOL!
-
Well, I gotta go! I've been at work for far too long. Later.

Enough already about cemetery plots! Depressing!
Let's move on to cremation.
Then there was the wife who remarried. She kept her first husband's remains in a little urn on the mantel. The current husband was a sweet guy but a little lazy, and every so often, when he couldn't find an ashtray, he'd butt out his cigar in the urn.
One day the wife was dusting, and as she passed the urn she lifted the lid. She did a double take, and then said, "Mmm, I see we're gaining a little weight."

Getting back the TOD, I had forgotton to mention Leonard Berstein's Mass. I never figured out whether it was the ink used in the booklet or what, but there is a particularly church-like smell that eminates from the box.
Hmmm...I just sniffed at my Mass, and the scent still lingers.
-
I leave for a few hours to watch Arthur and play my Harry Potter game, and while I'm gone, you talk about cemetery plots and cremation?
What does a church smell like, Dan?

An unqualified rave for WHAT IF? from the Tolucan Times Aug. 18:
....from Night Lights
by Pat Taylor
What If? (A musical revue) – This is a whacky, campy, musical romp, offering clever parodies of famous composers show tunes, laced with some fab original songs by an impressive lineup of cabaret/musical theatre songwriters (too many to list). An entertaining, tongue-in-cheek, theme-less, audience-pleasing delight. And what an audience it was opening night! Carl and Estelle Reiner, Jack Klugman, Mel Brooks, Phil Crosby Jr., Richard M. Sherman, Gregg Marx, Jason Grae, George Furth, and a splendid list of recognizable notables were present. Everyone had a ball, including the paparazzi! A series of humorous song switcharoos are performed, such as “What If?” Stephen Sondheim had written Bye Bye Birdie, or Rodgers and Hammerstein had written Assassins. You get the idea? Those who really know their show tunes will best “get” the concept, but even if you don’t, this show is a ton of fun! Under the fun lovin’, lively, fast-paced direction of Bruce Kimmel, a talented and fresh cast of five, wow us! Let me name them, and mention my favorite moments from each one. Paul Haber, (terrific!) touched our hearts singing, “Millions of Men,” written by Schmidt/Jones. Tammy Minoff, (a bundle of personality!) was precious, singing “Simply” by Kimmel. Alet Taylor, (what a voice!) captivated us, singing “When You’re Waiting for Love” also written by Kimmel. (This one should be the “single’s” National anthem.) Ryan Rafferty, (a riot!) was memorable singing “I Don’t Need You” by Holmes. Susanne Blakeslee, (an all round vivacious and compelling performer!) brought the house down with Billy Barnes tune, “A Little Lift,” spoofing cosmetic surgery. Flairful costuming by Amy Adams, set by Melissa Ficociello, sound by Brandon Baruch and lighting by Steve Pope round out the kudos. Running through September 18 at the Hudson Theatre – (Main stage) 6539 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood. For seats/times, call (323) 960-7784.

From the LA Weekly review [edited]...
WHAT IF? A MUSICAL REVUE
Director Bruce Kimmel and his extraordinary cast have created what could become a hugely successful franchise on the order of Forbidden Broadway. The title’s query is followed by a series of preposterous answers to such musings as, “What if instead of writing Fiddler on the Roof Bock and Harnick had written A Chorus Line?” This is some of the finest musical theater parody I’ve seen. Kimmel’s outlandish lyrics, mocking Broadway’s best, aggressively converge with some of the most popular music of Sondheim, Rodgers, Bernstein, Loesser and more — creating almost shockingly funny moments. Beyond Kimmel’s very clever conceit are the performances of five performers who seem to breathe musical theater in their perfect mimicry of Broadway singing and dancing — the latter helped tremendously by choreographers Cheryl Baxter and Joseph R. McKee, who’ve probably seen far too much Jerome Robbins. ....He then says something with which I respectfully and totally disagree, so I'm leaving it out - but then winds up with ....we may well see a long run here, in New York and points in between. Ellafrankie Productions at the Hudson Mainstage Theater, 6539 Santa Monica Blvd., Hlywd.; Thurs.-Sat., 8 p.m.; thru Sept. 18. (323) 960-7784. Written 08/19/2004 (Tom Provenzano)

S. Woody and DerBrucer, I am so sorry to hear the news about Kelsey. I know he had a wonderful life with you and you were blessed to have him in your lives. My thoughts will be with Marty, also.

A message from fun lovin' fast-paced bk:
The notes will go up late tonight. He's having a post show snack with Miss Tammy Minoff and her brother and other interesting folk.

Continuing DR Panni's thread of What If reviews...
In Backstage West, Wenzel Jones gives the show an extremely positive review. Its not perfect, but then again Jones is infamous in the LA theatre community as hating just about everything and being very nasty about it.
Think of a west coast version of John Simon !

Heartfelt condolences to the S. Woody White/Der Brucer household.

The Dear Mother and I recently purchased adjacent pieces of 20 square foot property. The area of the cemetery where the plots are located was still being developed when we purchased them, and the Dear Mother has expressed a desire to check and see how the "neighborhood" is progressing.
By the way (BTW, in internet lingo), we'll have an eternal view of The Walt Disney Company headquarters from our final resting spots. Isn't that swell? Isn't that too too?

The friend who is staying with me should win the World's Greatest Houseguest award. He's got an interim job here in L.A. that keeps him busy in the evening several nights a week so we're not constantly underfoot with each other, he keeps the guestroom neat (he makes his bed every day!), he's quiet, he helps me look after Roller and Blackjack, he does his laundry when I'm not around so there's no conflict over the washer/dryer and--though he probably thinks I haven't noticed--he waits for me to be done on the computer before he hooks into the second phone line in the house. All that and he's really pleasant company, too!

Mr. Bernstein may have done many many wonderful things in his illustrious career, but helping start Varese Sarabande wasn't one of them. If I may toot my OWN horn, I helped start Varese and was responsible for getting them into soundtracks. I was offered a third of the company for a ridiculously low amount of money and I said no because at the time I didn't have those kinds of funds to play with, what with a growing eight year old daughter and a new house. What a mistake.
