Well, you've read the notes, the notes had pure imagination, and now it is time for you to post until the imaginative cows come home.

And the word of the day is: JOCOSE!

A Very Happy Birthday to DR Jane!! :D

Hmm...interesting topic of the day, BK.

~~~SUPER BREAK LEGS VIBES AND XYLOPHONES TO BK AND CAST FOR TONIGHT'S OPENING NIGHT PERFORMANCE!!~~~
-
Topic of the Day: "At Long Last Love."
-
There's a topic - I don't know WHAT you're talking about :)
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Happy Jane Day!
-
Good morning, all.
Coffee!!
Oh my, all of these lovely Sagittariusianesque natal days! Talk about a season to be jolly!
Happy Birthday, DR Jane -- and many many more!
Good morning, all! Because of weather, my friends' flight from Dallas (not California) has been canceled. I don't know if he and his family are coming in later or not yet. My friend Vinny, who played rehearsals for EILEEN, DEAREST ENEMY, and ROBERTA will arrive tomorrow. He's been traveling with the Celtic Tenors.
Last night, after a bad day - except for a surprise and wonderful gift - I went to bed at 7:30. I got about 12 hours of sleep, which was needed. Today I will be tied up with Encores! work. Joshie and I worked out the calendar of deadlines last night around 5:00, while my mind still worked.
DR cillaliz, i loved your comment about the SOM and high school performances. Had I been awake when you posted it, I'd have sent you gold stars. Whatare you going to do with your abundant vacation time?
I am out of milk and I need coffee!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Successful Opening Vibes for BK & Co.! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
It's so good to hear about how well the show has come together. Now I'm sorry I couldn't make it last night! :D
VIBES and XYLOPHONES and perhaps a MARIMBA for a great opening night tonight!
-
I've been to the market, I now have milk and other necessities and I'm ready to tackle LITTLE ME this morning.
The Cast Recording List has certainly brought out a great number of moronic twits, asses, and jerks in the past two days! Who knew THE SOUND OF MUSIC could rally so many fools?
-
Happy Birthday, DR JANE!
-
I am off work today....not feeling so well....but not enough to ask for vibes....
OF COURSE the furnace is not working on the coldest day of the year so far.....10 degrees.....and no one will answer our calls.....we do have the gas fireplace and some space heaters, so we will survive....
But if the damned heat pump isn't going to work....just give me back my furnace.

DR GEORGE - I think ALLL is on Blu Ray.

I wonder of The Sound of Music DVD will be of the live broadcast or the taped dress rehearsal?
-
I wonder of The Sound of Music DVD will be of the live broadcast or the taped dress rehearsal?
I heard that the West Coast broadcast had an entirely different sound mix, and that all during the broadcast, the sound crew were adjusting and fixing things. I want to see the commercial DVD to see how the momentum hods up without the multiple commercial breaks to slow it down.
-
Happy Birthday, Jane!

TOD:
Actually, there are 2 "Holy Grail" movies that I'd like to see (legally) released onto even DVD.
PORGY AND BESS with Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge

I think NO commercials would improve the show immensely. WalMart has an exclusive SING A LONG cd that includes the soundtrack and another disc...but I don't know if it's just the music tracks or also has background or foreground singing....

I love that fact that Walmart, in way too many commercials, rammed down our commercial throats a large family saving money shopping at Walmart while their employees can't support their families on what Walmart pays.

When Xerox was the sponsor for Joseph Papp's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, with Sam Waterston and Kathleen Widdoes, in 1973, there were three commercials:beginning, end, and act break, something these asshole sponsors of today should pay tribute to. There were 45 minutes of commercials in the SOM broadcast.

Unfortunately the Gershwin estate won't allow it. The TV version from a decade or so back was awful.
I have seen clips of the movie on YouTube

The same fools followed the theater showing of "Merrily We Roll Along."
-
I DVR'ed "The Sound of Music" but am waiting a few days to let it settle before going back to it. It's going to be great to study certain bits, and to see things that happened that people have been talking about but which I didn't catch during the broadcast. And to fast-forward through the commercials. (Which I muted and didn't even look at, anyhoo, so at least I didn't suffer along with the rest of the populace.) I liked a great deal of it and was mostly appalled by the imbalance (and noise) in the audio. How that could have happened is beyond me. I haven't yet heard whether it's something that can be corrected for the DVD.
Speaking of which ..... DVD, and no Blu-Ray? For a high-definition broadcast of one of the highest-profile events in recent times? Say what? Say again? Where am I? 1998?
-
Happy Birthday, DR Jane!!!
-
Happy birthday to dear DR Jane!

I am rewriting my proposal for my final project for my master's one more time. It seems that every round of suggestions from the people running the graduate program are to dumb down everything in the proposal and to make it as simplistic as possible. Well, if they want dumb, they came to the right person, I guess.

From DR Vixmom:
wow oh wow lucky edith!
She sure is :)

Yup, I'm here catching up from last night first. The phone keeps ringing for some reason ;)
-
DR GEORGE - I think ALLL is on Blu Ray.
It is! I first took today's Topic of the Day to be what Holy Grail films for me have finally been released on Blu and Ray. I didn't think about which do I want to come on Blu and Ray that have not yet been released. For me, that would probably be "Twice Upon a Time," with both soundtracks...the original "clean" version (which is what is on the released VHS (http://www.amazon.com/dp/6302816661/), and I have this) and the preferred "naughty" version, which I think I have <ahem> on a downloaded and burned DVD. ;)

From DR Cilla:
I'm lucky to have her. With the cash flow not sure there's going to be enough for a raise next year, but she said she'd rather have the extra week of pd vacation. I can do that
The luck is two sided. That is great she is happy with more time of if a raise doesn't happen.

Exactly! My sister's boyfriend is making me a Blu-ray of the TV broadcast. It'll have the advertising bugs and the one bad transition out of commercial when they're at the festival, but it'll be hi-def Blu and Ray! :D
I can't copy Blu-ray discs, otherwise I'd offer them to those who have Blu-ray players. Sorry.
-
I'd like Richard Lester's "Finders Keepers" and Jonathan Demme's "Handle With Care" on DVD.
-
And now, I must get to work. After that, I really need to look for the CD-ROM of Bookworm that I bought a few months ago. My mom got a new laptop and wants me to put it on that, but I haven't been able to find it, yet. :-\ Hopefully, I will be able to. I'm sure that it'll turn up soon. I don't think that I took it anywhere else.
Anyway, I'm off. Be back later!

Bruce congratulations on another excellent show!
And...thank you for the big birthday wishes. I still remember the first day we met. As shy as I was I was rather bold with you. I had fun teasing you with facts I knew about you which you couldn't imagine how I knew. Of course I had been told them from my father knowing I was bound to meet you at school. :)

I have "liked" DR John G.'s review.

We are back from a lovely event in Mason, Ohio, and Fr. Richard has already called Lima to say we won't be there tomorrow. After yesterday's snowstorm, the main roads are fine today, but there's a winter weather advisory posted for 6am Sunday to 4am Monday. We could get another 1-2" of snow and a tenth of an inch of ice. Not the kind of forecast in which we want to get ourselves 100 miles from home.

DR Cillaliz, I, too, loved your comments about THE SOUND OF MUSIC. And I wanted to tell you that my lasting legacy at Miami University is the closing of the regional campus libraries between Christmas and New Year's. About 30 years ago, when I was managing the Middletown Campus library, everyone wanted vacation then and we realized that the only people who used our facility during that time were community residents who have a perfectly good public library at their disposal. Classes were not in session and there were no students, no faculty on campus. Depending on what day of the week was Christmas, we could get as much as a week and a half off by only taking 4 vacation days. The Hamilton Campus library shortly followed suit and they're still closing from Christmas Eve until the first working day of the new year.

Well at last the MAN came and discovered that indeed something was amiss with our new Heat Pump - there was condensation in the line (which sounds kind of like carbon on the valves) - but he worked on that a while and now everything is working as it should!

Show vibes for MR BK & Co....and DR TCB this evening.

I too love the idea of having stage shows on tv!
-
Until I saw the broadcast the other night, I had almost forgotten that they cut, and that I missed, the opening part of the song SOM from the movie version. It, of coursse, would not have made sense with Julie twirling around in bright sunshine on top of the mountain; but it does change the way the song should be sung.
My day in the hills has come to end I know
A star has come out to tell me it's time to go
But deep in the dark green forest
Are voices that urge me to stay
So I pause and I wait and I listen
For one more sound for one more lovely thing
That the hills might say

I didn't notice any problems with the sound in the West Coast feed, but I am not very good at paying attention to things like that. Unless there was a huge problem, I would never notice.

Amen! I feel presonally responsible for converting several of my co-workers with the State into theatergoers. I would alwasy announce when we were having a free preview for a show that I was doing. For some, it was like pulling teeth to get them to come, even though it was free. Many of those that I talked into going are now regular theater patrons.

Thanks Ginny. We are going to work Monday and half of Tuesday before New Years. Just in case there are fires we need to put out after being gone a week. When I do federal criminal work, it's almost impossible to not work during that time, but I'm not doing it right now so we're going to take advantage of it

Until I saw the broadcast the other night, I had almost forgotten that they cut and that I missed from the movie version.
Right! For years I stopped giving any thought to that, myself. And years went by before I even made this connection: They did employ that musical theme in the introductory sections of "I Have Confidence in Me".
-
As far as my time off. I will be going to my parents' house. Probably just for one night, although mom wants me to stay longer. I'm sure I can get Paul or someone to feed the cats, and Callie was fine missing two doses so I'm ok leaving her. But I don't think I want to be gone more than one night.
What I really want to do is just be home and do some projects I want to do. I'm not going to get Dad's records done before Christmas, so that would be fun to work on. I also want to finish painting the spare room. I've said that a million times, but now I'm spending more time in there because it truly is the warmest room in the whole house. I have a great futon to lay on, and old recliner to sit in and tv to watch. So every time I go in I think "Yuck" I need to finish this. And I have all sorts of projects that I just never have time to do. So, I'll likely just stay home...maybe go to movies, maybe read books. Pretty much whatever I feel like doing.
And all the shades I ordered will be shipped on the 23rd. Even if they don't arrive by then, I want the windows ready for them to be hung.
-
Well, I better bundle up and venture out. We're supposed to have 3-6 inches of snow tonight and I'm sure I don't have any gas for the snow blower. I also need to go to the grocery store. I'm in the mood to bake cookies and I'm out of butter.
-
It's a balmy 8 degrees, a veritable heat waver

Good morning, all! Because of weather, my friends' flight from Dallas (not California) has been canceled. I don't know if he and his family are coming in later or not yet. My friend Vinny, who played rehearsals for EILEEN, DEAREST ENEMY, and ROBERTA will arrive tomorrow. He's been traveling with the Celtic Tenors.
Last night, after a bad day - except for a surprise and wonderful gift - I went to bed at 7:30. I got about 12 hours of sleep, which was needed. Today I will be tied up with Encores! work. Joshie and I worked out the calendar of deadlines last night around 5:00, while my mind still worked.
DR cillaliz, i loved your comment about the SOM and high school performances. Had I been awake when you posted it, I'd have sent you gold stars. Whatare you going to do with your abundant vacation time?
I am out of milk and I need coffee!
Thanks Elmore. It really irritated me that I'm hearing from so many people that I know don't go to the theater unless they have a family member in the production saying the watched and enjoyed it and many who think they are "theater people" are doing nothing by nit pick. If someone new watches and gets the theater bug or maybe their kids see a musical for the first time, it may be a whole new audience who may think "You know, maybe we should go see live theater" . I hope they do more live musicals on TV
Paula Leggett Chase, who was one of the nuns, is married to the show's musical director, and she posted a wonderful thing on FB about how she hoped the ratings would guarantee other productions that would give a lot of the negative posters a chance to show them how to do it right.

Good for Paula!

DR TCB - it has been said that those lyrics were the last written by Oscar Hammerstein II....which is fitting.... I think I read it in a photo book about R/H musicals many years ago.

I thought "Edelweiss" was the last lyric he wrote. I'll check the COMPLETE LYRICS OF OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN.
I got 10 pages of orchestra parts done today. I'll do more tomorrow until Vinny shows up.
-
According to the Hammerstein lyrics, "Edelweiss" was his last completed lyric. There are lyrics as well for several dropped songs and a discarded lyric for "How Can Love survive?"

The weatherman just said "Tomorrow it will be warmer, you can wear 14 layers instead of 15"

Break a leg vibes for Pure Imagination!!

If the West Coast had "fixed" sound mix, a) it is reprehensible as this was supposed to be a LIVE show, warts and all, and b) the mix I'm hearing is one of the worst ever with vocals buried under the orchestra - if it was worse, I can't even imagine it.
-
I put plastic up on some of my living room windows today. It should be outside but I didn't get it done so I tried to do it inside. With my shades, it's really hard to do it an the tape didn't stick very well so, I'll probably have to do it all over. The good news is I had to pull out some furniture and it is now clean behind the desk and everything else along that wall
-
I've just watched about ten minutes so far, but want to see the rest before commenting. Otherwise, picked up no packages and have just been relaxing.
-
A very happy birthday to DR Jane!!
Hope you are enjoying your day!

Don't know if the TOD is what is your holy grail that is already on Blu ray, or that you would like to see on Blu Ray...either way, I don't have a blu ray player yet, so....one of these days.

Big Ten championship game - Go, Spartans!

Mary Martin told a story on the old Jack Parr program that they were out of town (Boston?)and Oscar had not been well, but he came to the theater and before the performance he gave Mary a note. According to her, on it was written, “A bell's not a bell 'til you ring it - A song's not a song 'til you sing it - Love in your heart wasn't put there to stay - Love isn't love 'til you give it away!”
Mary said that Oscar died that night.
That is my story, and I am sticking to it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANE!!!!!!
Thanks. It has been a strange one not being able to go anywhere. We did walk to the mailbox only to find the mail was very late today or not coming at all.

Just finished reading Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail. I think I've lost weight just reading about the hike

Jane have you ever hiked on the PCT?

A walk? All the way to the mailbox? You Oregonians really know how to live!!
It is a half mile walk down to the mailbox and then a half mile back uphill. In 8 inch snow I worked my leg muscles. I waited while Keith crossed the icy plowed road at the bottom of the hill to reach our box.
-
Just finished reading Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail. I think I've lost weight just reading about the hike

I often hike part of the trail and talk to hikers on their way into Ashland.

Are you a trail angel?
-
I have friends who hiked either the whole trail or most of it shortly after they got married. They moved to Idaho when they got back
-
Jane have you ever hiked on the PCT?
LOL I just answered that. My favorite hike is on the stretch of the trail on Mt. Ashland where I meet those hikers. I've met a few limping the rest of the way and rushing to the post office for new shoes.
-
I though a lot about you as I read the chapter when she was around Ashland

I've seen others leave water but have never done anything. I would have offered the limping hikers a ride if their hadn't been so many of them and not much room in my car with Sherlock in the back. I did single out one woman but she said she would be ok. I never found out if she made it in time. I have had friends give people lifts into town, but then I'm not really going back that way.
-

I've seen hikers in town but have only talked to the ones I met on the trail.

My favorite place to begin hiking on the PTC.
-
In about thirty minutes I shall be on my way to the theater for opening night.
-
Awww nice to see Sherlock.

Break a Leg BK!

A view from the trail.
-
Of course this is all covered in snow today.
-
It's beautiful!
-
Awww nice to see Sherlock.
He posed so nicely next to the sign for me when he really wanted to run.
-
I think it would be fun to hike a little of the trail during the day, but I couldn't do the pack and camp thing.

Has to be the same, then.
About halfway through the broadcast I tried switching my receiver over from Pro Logic or whatever it was defaulting to, to plain old L/R stereo, and oddly enough it tightened things up and brought the vocals into better balance with the orchestra. Still ugly, though, and I found it more pleasing in general to keep it on the surround setting.
There's an interview with a producer or someone at the network, in which they admitted there was one (1) - count 'em - audio person at the controls.
-
It's beautiful!
I only got up there in the early fall this year. I don't go once the weather turns cold or if there is snow. There is skiing on the mountain but the lifts are before the PCT. I know people who cross country ski by the sign.
-
I like going for several hours and that is enough.

I saw it at the same time as the East Coast and the sound was fine here

That sounds good. Someday, I'll come out in warm weather and we can go for a hike :)
-
Also, I eventually noticed that the dialogue is just as poorly miked. Way too low, with noise that's beyond belief.
-
This afternoon I braved the crowds in downtown Tempe to get to the theater to see the tour of Evita. In addition to the main road being closed for an arts festival, there is a big football game being played at the stadium. We rode the light rail instead of even trying to drive and park.
Afterwards, DRs Sandra and Jason and I had dinner at IHOP.
I've seen Evita twice before and disliked it. This is the first time I've ever seen a show I didn't like and came out liking it. They did a great job.

Did you harass Jason at the counter with stupid questions?

I'll have to remember to do that when we see him in Cincinnati early next year!
DR Laura, we like EVITA and look forward to seeing it again.

Say what? Say again? Where am I? 1998?
I recorded the West Coast feed. I wonder if the sound will be better as someone mentioned.
I didn't notice any problems with the sound in the West Coast feed, but I am not very good at paying attention to things like that. Unless there was a huge problem, I would never notice.
I saw the first half hour of the East Coast feed and did notice that the music was quite loud (over the singing).

Fun from the company party tonight. The band was in fine form. And thanks to earplugs, so is my hearing. We got about 15 people deep from the stage. Really a blast.

Sorry.
But can you offer a regular DVD to those of us who missed it?
Of course, John! You were the first on the list. :)

TOD 2:
Still waiting for Sun Valley Serenade to come out on DVD, BluRay or what have you. Glenn Miller in stereo. Great music, silly script, the Nicholas Brothers with Dorothy Dandridge and, oh yeah, Sonja Henie.
Not the same but here is the whole movie on Youtube

Amen! I feel presonally responsible for converting several of my co-workers with the State into theatergoers. I would alwasy announce when we were having a free preview for a show that I was doing. For some, it was like pulling teeth to get them to come, even though it was free. Many of those that I talked into going are now regular theater patrons.
Good for you! RARELY have any of my coworkers seen shows that I was in.

We are playing our sworn enemies, the SF 49ers.

Good night, all.

TCB, take this one to page eight!

Last week we became the first team to land a berth in the playoffs. If we win tomorrow, we will be the first team to win their division. And we would be 12-1 for the season.

Back from a lovely opening night performance - not quite as spontaneous as Friday night's but wonderful nonetheless. Very nice sold out crowd. They had a little party for us after, then several of us went to Jerry's to wind down. Whilst there I think I turned a new age.
