Well, you've read the notes, the notes remembered Fred (Toby) Bluth, and now it is time for you to post until the remembered cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: OCHLOPHOBIA!

Thinking of folks in Newtown, CT today...

-
Indeed, DR SINGDAW.
-
Lovely thoughts and photos in the notes today.
-
Beautiful flower photos from DR JANE yesterday!!!
DR ELMORE - sorry about your accident. Healing and pain-free vibes to you.
-
The weather is very bad and there is snow predicted all day....so i am waiting to hear from my sister about what will be happening about work today....I know I AM NOT DRIVING.
-
Good morning, all.
It is, of course, snowing. I'd guess we've got an inch so far, but it's really coming down. Our estimate as of last night was to get between four and eight inches. Ugh and Oy.
Coffee. Banana. Apple cider doughnut. More coffee.
-
Thanks to BK for the beautiful and detailed reminiscences in the notes. That's one to print out and lay into my copy of Kritzer Time.
-
I tend to remember events as much by the day of the week as by the numerical date, so yesterday was when I felt the impact of the anniversary of Sandy Hook. As I sat marveling at the amazing and beautiful work of so many kids of all ages in last night's Nutcracker, I almost felt I could put myself in the place of parents who had suffered that kind of a loss, and feel it for a moment. Not really, of course. I know I couldn't imagine such a thing. But sometimes the right confluence of things can get one into that kind of a groove, and it gives one pause. As it should.
-
More coffee!
-
The store will open at noon, unless conditions worsen....but I am enjoying my day off.
-
I'm very sorry to hear about Fred (Toby) Bluth. I always loved his work and have a few of his pieces.
-
Good morning, all! 2014 can nay be a better year because this ones ending as a total disaster in my life! It's over in three weeks, and I am praying I survive it. Last night, around 1:00, I work with terrible pains in my leg from the stitches. I had been dreaming about Julie Andrews making a recording with me, and suddenly I was wake. I took two Tylenol with codeine, went back to bed and read for an hour or so, and then spent the rest of the night in a very unsettling sleep. I;m ready for my second cup of coffee, and I'm very unhappy that I lost several hours of good working time yesterday. So, today I will be at my desk trying to get through Act One.
Today is also my dad's 92nd birthday, and I am a bit melancholy. I do miss him very much.
BK, I loved today's notes about Toby Bluth. He had a huge fascination with BABES IN TOYLAND and kept trying to fix the show, which is impossible because it is what it is and the score is the important thing. I have his book version, which is one of several of his adaptations.
I am so happy that David is going to do LI'L ABNER! It will sound fantastic, and I hope it makes me thoroughly jealous that I waffled about doing it.

TOD: All the people I can think of in my life that were quite influential were teachers and/or instructors. I feel badly that society doesn't seem to value this role (monetarily, at least) as much as CEOs or professional athletes.
-
Agree, re teachers and instructors. Can't even imagine not having benefited from their wisdom and guidance.
-
Oh, look. It's still snowing.
-
Good morning, all.
Great notes today, BK. Very nice remembrance.
-
TOD: I've learned a great deal from the people I've interviewed over the years. One of those happened to be a certain Larry Moore, one of a few people I've kept in touch with long after the interview is over.
-
Good Morning All:
Bk, so sorry to hear about your friend Fred (Toby) Bluth. May God bless him and grant him peace!

Goodbye for now!

DR Elmore, I hope you are feeling better!
No pains this morning. Just chagrin and regrets!

What exactly in the HELL did you do, DR Elmore? Or should we ask? How many stitches? Oy!

BK,
Condolences on the passing of your friend.

TOD:
Several people have had a major positive influence on my career path. Among them:
1. The Storyman - If you've read some of my writings, you will know who he is.
2. Producer Stanley Rubin, who is (thankfully) still with us.
3. Roger Corman, also (thankfully) still with us.
The list goes on...

DR elmore did you mention yesterday it was your leg that needed stitches? I guess I just thought you cut yourself it would be on the hand.
Wishes and vibes you sleep tonight!

Healing Vibes for Elmore
-
I spent the morning shopping for grovery shopping - I went to the local BJ's (like a Costco but more of a selection of family size rather than army size packages)
it wasn't too crowded and there was plenty of bread and milk on the shelves, unlike the grocery stores
-
Then I had a meeting at church - set up communion for tonights and tomorrow's services and wandered on homeward
-
I was supposed to have my hairs cut but cancelled my appointment and made a new one for next weekend
-
I woke at 8 am to a few random flurries and there has been a light but steady snow all day
-
there's a bout an inch of snow covering everything now
-
I am trying an experiment for dinner- I have never used my slow cooker for anything but chili today I put a piece of pork loin, some fingerling potatoes, some cut carrots and a package of Lipton onion soup mix and some water in the slow cooker and turned in on--- we'll see how it turns out --
If its a miserable failure pizza is only a mouse click away.....
-
BK, my condolences on the loss of your friend.

Very nice DR JOHN G.
The snow has turned to slush....which is good for tomorrow since I have to drive down for a reading of the play I am doing in January.
-
Went out to a few shops today and just decided that $185 was too much for a 1-ounce white truffle. So, it'll be a truffle-free Christmas this year. But I did buy a bag of organic carrots in purple, yellow and, of course, orange colors. I think it'll make a lovely salad or stir-fry.

Saturday afternoon greetings! After a nice sleep-in, Richard and I went to the craft show/bazaar at the local senior center and out for lunch. Rob and Mary Linda were here when we got home, retrieving their Christmas decorations that reside in our basement. Richard and I are now in for the evening and looking forward to the SOUND OF MUSIC re-broadcast.

I was hoping there would be a check in today's post. Sadly, there was not.
Damn.
-
Hello, everyone.
Sorry to hear about your accident, Larry, but am glad you were able to get the care you needed.
-
BK, I'm sorry to hear about your friend.

My time at Bluth Brothers was just as memorable as BK's. Every now and then Bruce would phone with one of his "You must..." comments. I believe the very first one was to see ONCE UPON A MATTRESS at Bluth Brothers. I went; it was my very first live musical and I LOVED it. I auditioned for their next show and was cast in the chorus of LI'L ABNER. I also helped with costumes and sets for that and other shows.
Don and Fred Bluth were both ENORMOUSLY talented. Fred was a good-looking actor, singer, and director. Don was a quiet person, happy, I think, to musical direct and take care of the sets and other aspects. I don't recall a budget ever being mentioned; raw materials just appeared, we were instructed as to what to do, and magic happened.
-

MEGA VIBES EVERYONE.
MEGA HAPPINESS EVERYONE.
;) ;) ;)

-
Packing.
Just packing.
Packing and packing.
;D
-
The talent that was a part of the two years of Bluth Brothers Theatre was just amazing. I was absolutely awed by the Santangelo sisters, not to mention Bill Hunt. I'll never forget Walter Willison's audition. Here was this tall, lanky teen. But when he opened his mouth to sing it was heaven. We were all blown away.
-
Thank you for the winter pictures.
I do forward them.
;D ;D
-
:)
-
I knew Don was an animator, formerly at Disney. I didn't know that Fred was also until much later. I knew Fred as actor/singer/director. At a cast party at the parents' home Don did his bird imitation. He'd spent many hours observing and drawing birds and had their movements down pat. It was quite impressive. I wish Bruce could have seen it.
-
Yes, RIP Fred Bluth.
-
Must scoot and take care of some things.
TTFN. Stay warm.
-
Bill Hunt is still kicking and doing shows - he never stops. We all did The Wizard of Oz together - Walter was the Scarecrow and I was the Tin Man - I think Terry Reily was the Cowardly Lion and Bill was the Wizard.
-
Did a three-mile jog, had some bacon and eggs, picked up one package and am home until I leave for the theater around six-fifteen or so.
-
Thanks so much to BK and to Jeanne for sharing those beautiful remembrances.
-
Larry - hoping you're healing better.

I was about to make a similar comment. I'm enjoying the stories.
-
Bruce, Penny went with me to see you in "Blithe Spirit".
-
Page three? Really?
-
Most unseemly.
-
Did you also do Blithe Spirit there?
-
No, just the musical version of Blithe, High Spirits.
-
hello everyone,
BK, I only knew of Toby and his stellar reputation, but never met him. I'm sorry to hear he is gone.
It's such an odd time right now with so many people going. I lost a friend this week as well, Kevin Traxler, who was a fan of my work, and hence was responsible for putting me in the center of a remarkably memorable experience some years back. It was during an earlier attempt to put INTO THE WOODS on film, and at the end of their development time, the producers and director wanted to have a second meeting with Billy Crystal about playing the Baker and he was interested. It took place at Craig Zadan's house.
At the meeting, two of us were to present a brand new duet between the Baker and his wife written specifically for the film called "Rainbows" (yes, I still have the music and the rehearsal tape). I will be interested to see if that song finds its way into the new film. Anyway, it was a fascinating experience since, once we presented the song twice and I answered Billy's questions about the top notes, the producers did not ask us to leave the meeting. We stayed happily, and it was a story in itself being there through those exchanges.
But yes, the man who entrusted me with that moment, left us this week at age 49. Completely unexpected.
It's a reminder for us all to tell those you cherish that you love them.
-
No, just the musical version of Blithe, High Spirits.
Then I guess this is what we saw :)
-
Fans of SHERLOCK should look at this. (http://sherlockology.tumblr.com/post/68473172885/series-3-airdate-guide)
According to this site for fans the show will return to the US on January 19th while IMDB & other articles I've read say January 1st.
-
If I recall correctly, the song Rainbows was used in the recent Marry Me a Little revamp.
-
Had a tap class tonight. We're performing Tuesday. In front of live people. The more I practice, the less I feel I know. This will be a veeeeeerrrrrryyyyy long 90 seconds.
-
Going through minor BBQ withdrawals. Had to run out after class for a 5-meat plate: brisket, pork rib, sausage, ham and pulled pork. Lousiest, over sweet coleslaw yet.

Interesting. I didn't know they'd revamped it. Then again, when I first did it, we added things, thanks to Mr. S., that at the time were still in the trunk, but now are out there for anyone.
-
It's very quiet about the apartment today. And because of the snow, it's been very quiet outside. This afternoon I washed everything that soaked all night and I now have sox, trousers, and towels all free of blood stains.
It's time for another damned Channel 13 fund drive on PBS so my Britcoms are off tonight as well. I swear that damned PBS spends a good week a month on these pleas for money. After having worked on a PBS sponsored broadcast (Emmy winning, to boot!) for little money - because they plead poverty and it's an honor to work for nothing for them - and seeing how much money was wasted on the whims of the music director, the director/choreographer, and the producer, PBS will never get a cent from me.
So, I'm going to read a bit and crash. I have a lot of work tomorrow and a party tomorrow night.
I just got a nice message on FB from Jason Graae's partner and our friend Michele McKenzie. Jason's in Houston, I think, wreaking some Christmas mischief.
-
DR elmore I'm impressed your pants are cut and ruined.
Sleep well.
-
We have turned into Christmas curmudgeons. I haven't even sent any cards. I used to embrace Christmas, oh well.
The only two gifts we are buying are for Bryan and Craig, well Bryan's will also be for his wife. I'm browsing for special food items. My first stop is at Zingerman's were I might have found something for Craig, a deep fried pickle making kit. I want to search more for vegan gifts for him.
-

The All America Concert Band played It's a really fun event. I love doing it. The dogs from the past two years were there looking happy and very spoiled.
-
perhaps I am a grinch or just poor but I cannot imagine spending $15,000.00 for a dog
-
while Vixdad was repairing the lights we watched Scrooge (Alistar Sims) and Sweet Revenge (Helena Bonham Carter and Sam Neil) and now we are watching The Englishman that went up a hill but came down a Mountain
-
8 or 9 years ago we bought a pre-lighted Christmas tree and last year watched several sections go dark as lights burned out. We tried to put it together tonight, but soon realized that all the lights had to come off. Richard and I worked through the entirety of WHITE CHRISTMAS on DVD, a couple episodes of BIG BANG THEORY, and all of THE SOUND OF MUSIC rebroadcast on NBC, and we finally have all the lights removed. Tomorrow we'll try to buy new ones.
No trip to Lima because the weather up there is still pretty bad. We had a lot of rain and melting today that's expected to refreeze overnight. Glad we don't have to be on the road before dawn tomorrow.
-
Good evening.
I am sorry for the loss of your friend, BK.
-
Tonight the flute choir played at the pioneer village in Le Mars. We're just sort of background actually. There are people who sit and listen, but it's not like a concert. The area we play in is where they have all the trees decorated by people in the community. It's where they give away hot cocoa and popcorn balls. Anyway, it was fun to do until I started to accompany on the piano on Sleigh Ride Samba. We all assumed the piano would be in tune....guess again. It was really bad I had to laugh. Other than that I think we sounded good.
-
perhaps I am a grinch or just poor but I cannot imagine spending $15,000.00 for a dog

I am sorry to hear about your injury, Elmore. I hope you heal quickly.

I spent the last couple of days at a wildlife preserve. The geese and cranes have learned to tease the photographers by staying in the middle of the very big fields.

It's not really for the dog. It's a charity that raises money and buys toys for families who can't afford them for their kids at Christmas. The dog auction is just a small part of their fundraising efforts and they've been doing it for 78 years. They raise over $100,000.00 every year and spend it on toys for kids. People can apply for the toys or I think you can send in the info for someone. They are starting to hand them out tomorrow to parents/ whoever so the kids can get them from Santa at Christmas. It's a really cool charity. So the donation is really to the charity, it's just if you donate your big bucks at the auction, you get the dog
-
especially as I have not purchased a ticket

Yeah it is. Lots of people come to the auction and give their donations. They announce a lot of them on the radio even if they are only $20. The auctioneer is really funny. I think it's pretty much decided ahead of time who is going to win, but I don't think that's always the case. The daughter of the woman who got Snickers was carrying him around for about half of the auction. He really seemed to like her a lot
-
DR Cillaliz, your event tonight sounds like a lot of fun!
-
Thanks Ginny, both the little yellow dog and the pioneer village were fun events. Tomorrow is our AACB Christmas concert. Lots of flute playing this weekend, but after tomorrow, our next rehearsal isn't until January 8 so I can get my Christmas shopping done and see some movies
-
I'm interested in seeing Nebraska because most of it was filmed not far from here.
-
I also want to see Philomena, The Book Thief, and I think there were a couple more. I'm hoping to go in the evening this coming week.

good night all!
-
Poor, George, I volunteered him to usher for my show tomorrow.
-
Back from tonight's gala opening, which was anything but. I'm not one of these people who think there are really bad audiences - because even thought they might not be as vocal you can really tell they're having a good time and usually the applause at the end proves that to be correct. But tonight's sold out crowd was just about the worst audience I've ever had the displeasure to sit with. Some read their programs throughout the entire show, some probably couldn't hear anything, some just sat there like lumps of fish, and not one number got a laugh, even the laughs that cannot fail. I hated them, each and every one, save for the four people I knew and just wanted to tell them to stay home if they don't want to be entertained by a hard-working cast, who did not let the awful energy in the air hurt their energy. Or maybe they thought they were seeing A View from the Bridge or some other show like that that this theater is known for.
-
They had a party after, but I could not leave fast enough and a few of us went out to eat.
-
Bruce, I'm very sorry about the loss of your friend, Fred. :(
-
Well...
-
...since we're so close...

Today, I worked concessions for what turned out to be two performances each of two different shows! Olympia Family Theater was performing "Lyle, the Crocodile" at South Puget Sound Community College's Black Box and Studio West was performing their ballet production of "The Nutcracker" on SPSCC's Main Stage (the Washington Center for the Performing Arts schedules performances there and handles the ushers and concessions for them...although school productions also happen there and actually have priority for the spaces).
-
Fortunately, they staggered their starting times and their respective intermissions did not occur at the same time. That would not have been fun. AND there actually were four concessionaires scheduled at the same time (two for each show), but we all shared the same concessions area, so we pretty much all worked for both shows. Since it's all under the purview of the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, it's all the same till.
-
While one of the later intermissions was just starting, I got a call from our very own TCB and our friend Chris, who is the Managing Artistic Director of Tacoma Little Theatre (http://www.tacomalittletheatre.com/), where our very own TCB is performing in "It's a Wonderful Life," which I saw last week. Chris asked if I could usher tomorrow. They really must've been in a bind to call me in Olympia to usher in Tacoma.
-
I was just planning on staying home, doing laundry and watching TV, so I said yes. I'm going to see "IaWL" again! ;D
-
And this time I WILL take a camera! :D

I was able to rerecord this and it worked! I'll put together the DVDs within the next couple of days and send them out very soonly. I am now able to have both the show and the "making of" special on the same disc! Just to confirm, John G., Vixmom and Ginny asked for DVDs. Anyone else?

If I recall correctly, the song Rainbows was used in the recent Marry Me a Little revamp.

Interesting. I didn't know they'd revamped it. Then again, when I first did it, we added things, thanks to Mr. S., that at the time were still in the trunk, but now are out there for anyone.
Yup...the New Cast Recording (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FFA2BWK/) is available.

Don't feel bad, Tom. I agreed. :)
