It was 70 degrees in NY yesterday. We are on Long Island for the near future. We will have a small Christmas celebration with family. I'm looking forward to it. We will visit a friend today, I will walk 4 miles on the treadmill, we will watch a Maggie Smith movie from 2009

From Time to Time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_Time_to_Time_%28film%29)

We read the entire series of books, not just the one on which it was based (The Chimneys of Green Knowe) and we're looking forward to watching the movie.

Oatmeal, raisins, walnuts, cinnamon and coffee

I got that from Netflix once not knowing anything about it and enjoyed it.  It was a nice diversion!

In Oaxaca, Mexico, this evening is known as Noche de los Rabanos, or Night of the Radishes. How will you be celebrating?

TOD:

I'd love a few things that money can't buy: A cure for my diabetes, a month with great sleep each night, the end of this book even close to deadline, a clean house (well, money could probably buy the latter) ...

Up and after a frustrating forty minutes the new title is announced.  Doug couldn't upload the files to the site, and the web host had to do it.  Something to do with Doug's IP being flagged by some firewall - they're figuring out why now.  Meantime, here's the full blurb:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition release – the first complete release of

THE BUCCANEER

Composed and Conducted by Elmer Bernstein

DeMille had had his greatest success by remaking The Ten Commandments for Paramount in 1956, and so he decided that his next film for the studio where he’d toiled for so many years would be a remake of his 1938 film of The Buccaneer, this time in Technicolor and VistaVision.  But by 1958, having prepared the film, DeMille’s health was failing, so he asked Anthony Quinn to direct (Quinn was his son-in-law at the time) and longtime friend and associate Henry Wilcoxon to produce.  A great cast was assembled, including Yul Brynner, Charles Boyer and Claire Bloom. Charlton Heston appeared as Andrew Jackson.   Critics were cool to the film and it didn’t light up the box office, but it managed to snag one Oscar nomination (for Best Costumes). But looking back at it today, the film is very entertaining, looks incredible and has an absolutely stunning score by Elmer Bernstein.

Bernstein had, of course, done the score for DeMille’s The Ten Commandments so he was a natural for The Buccaneer.  He delivered a beauty of a score, filled with big and bold music and classic Bernstein themes.  The “Main Title” begins with a wonderful Bernstein fanfare leading into a glorious and heroic theme, more fanfares, and then an exquisitely beautiful theme followed by more fanfares – it’s everything you’d want in a main title from a time when composers really knew how to set the tone of the film in its first minutes.  The rest of his marvelous score is loaded with drama, romance and intrigue, all in the unique and colorful Bernstein style.

The Buccaneer was originally released on LP by Columbia Records and that LP program has had several CD releases over the years, all out of print.  This is the first release of the complete score, taken from the three-track session scoring masters and the original 15 IPS three-track album master, all freshly transferred and sounding wonderful in full-bodied stereo.  In addition to the complete dramatic score, we also present all of Bernstein’s source music cues, a couple of alternates, and some Bernstein piano demos.

The Buccaneer is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the first week of February, but we’ve been averaging three to four weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I watched MRS HENDERSON PRESENTS last night.....it always makes me laugh, although it's not Dame Judi's shining hour....she is amusing.

Director:  Betty will be here, and I want you two girls to flank her.

Dancer: What?! You want us to what??!!

Director: I want you stand on either side of her.

Dancer:  Oh....oh well all right, we can do that.....

That's a Stephen Frears movie, and I generally love his work. But I agree that it's not Judi Dench's best work. Loved the atmosphere more than anything.

CD and a couple of books ordered!

I already have a backlog of one to read, so this will bring me up to date and provide plenty to lose myself in over some cold winter nights ... whilst BK is hard at work writing the next one for our reading pleasure.  (And I'm very much looking forward to hearing what form that one's going to take.)

From DR TCB:
Quote
My cousins came down to see the final show and then we went to dinner with my sister and brother-in-law.  I forgot to take my copy of the J. A Jance with me for her to sign.  She said if I get it to her after I have finished reading it; she will get J. A. to sign it, also.

Now I remember why I have a J.A. Jance book on my library wish list.  This has been bugging me for the last couple of days.  ;D

I got up at 6:30 this morning so we could call Bryan and wish him a happy birthday before he went to sleep.  He has been working night shifts.  We couldn't get through on his phone and kept getting a message "We could not complete your call please try again”.  Fortunately a text went through and he called us back.  They had gone out for a birthday breakfast.  While talking he was enjoying a special beer before bed.  It seemed funny for him to be drinking while I haven't even had breakfast, even if it was closer to lunch there.

Well when I woke up this morning, I read on BookFace that my nephew Lance and his girlfriend Tracie were now ENGAGED.

Then I got a phone call from my sister to tell me that they are going to be married on Christmas Day!  So we have a wedding coming up....

I am okay with this I think.....details forthcoming.....but....well....I'm just not on board yet....but I have a whole day to think about it.

There is a big age difference in that Tracie has at least one child that is the same age as Lance.....

Took Mom a beautiful poinsettia and a slab of the birthday cake the Lima folks had for me at yesterday's coffee hour.  Wrote some checks for her and visited for a while.  Came home, fixed our dinner, and now I'm cooking for Wednesday.  Pumpkin pies are done and I'm about to make a much tamer Jello salad than the one in the photo DR Singdaw posted earlier.

Remember the plumber and the leak several weeks ago? Well, I've just discovered that there is a huge leak and the bottom of my sink is flooding. This would be discovered a day before Christmas and while I would rather be sick in bed, Goddam it. What did that idiot do?

NNOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

I will definitely watch tonight.  I think that this is the first time in the whole series that they haven't had the home audience voting...unless that will be happening tonight.

I have a friend who went to the radish festival there once.   I do have radishes in the fridge....guess I'll eat some

Speaking of the house....I have hung 10 of the 14 new shades.  I love them.  It was an expensive gift to myself that I'll be paying for, but after 8 years in the house with mini-blinds, I figured it was time to get the good stuff

My super and his son-in-law arrived, moped up the mess under the sink, and determined the leak is coming from the cold water fixture under the sink.  It's been leaking for three weeks. The new sink was installed on Dec. 2.

A plumber will be called in the morning and will hopefully repair the mess tomorrow.  Otherwise I have no cold water for three days.

I'd love a few things that money can't buy: A cure for my diabetes, a month with great sleep each night, the end of this book even close to deadline, a clean house (well, money could probably buy the latter) ...

Seriously?  Sounds like a washer may fix it or a new part.  I suppose with all the codes etc, they probably can't just fix it without a plumber.  Will you have hot water?  You can always pour hot water and let it cool :)

Oh!

Let's see - I made the tuna pasta salad - a double portion, which I've never done before and probably will never do again - all ingredients doubled, but the thing I put it into isn't doubled and it's VERY difficult mixing it all up in there with two pounds of noodles instead of one.  I think I finally got it pretty mixed.  And now begins the slicing and dicing, which will probably take two hours.

I can't believe all this continuing argument over DUCK DYNASTY.  Can't we just go back to arguing about THE SOUND OF MUSIC?

Well I am completely satisfied with the winner of THE SING OFF - although my favorite group was sent packing last week.  I like NOT having votes from the home viewers.....the judges are really good, so they know what they are talking about.

My favorite parts of the show were the 98 Degrees reunion and Jewel singing with Nick Lachey.....oh and Pat Benetar.

I'm home and watching it now.  Now that I think about it, I actually like not having the home votes, too.  It makes it an actual talent contest and not just a popularity contest.

I didn't find the Mr. Clean White Erasers at Costco.  I asked one of the red vests (they can look things up and let you know if a product is at another Costco), but the woman I asked said that they "don't carry them anymore, they've been deleted."  So Margo is S.O.L.  She was fine with that.

I actually went over to her place to give her a couple of DVDs (four episodes of GLEE and THE SOUND OF MUSIC) and we decided to go out to dinner.  We went to The Outback.  I had their Aged Cheddar and Bacon Burger (it's still very good).  We shared the Chocolate Thunder From Down Under (http://www.outback.com/menu/chocolate-thunder-from-down-under#.UrkzoftdAVc). It looked good, but wasn't.  The whipped cream (topping?) was weird and kind of tasteless.  The brownie itself was just not special enough.  The ice cream was not bad.  Overall, the burger was good but I won't have that dessert again. :P

I will say that what we got had a lot more of the whipped cream/topping and chocolate sauce that shows in the link, so that was a plus, but still, not worth it.

Well, I need to leave work and brave the parking lot and aisles of Costco.  I was just going to get some diet Pepsi, but my friend Margo called and asked if I could look for some Mr. Clean White Erasers.  I said sure.  I have a couple of DVDs that I need to get to her anyway, so I won't have to make a separate trip for that.

One of the DVDs is "The Sound of Music," which today I FINALLY mailed to John, Ginny and Vixmom...sorry about the delay.  Let me know when/if you get them!

Why would you brave Costco just for those two products?  Don't you have other supermarkets in your town?

Yes, but their diet Pepsi prices are pretty good...and I like the 36-can case.  And it's right next to Fred Meyer and very close to where I live and work, so I might as well go to Costco.

George, you are much more organized than me. I doubt I'd have the time to get to a post office for another couple of weeks.

It's two blocks from where I live...and about a half mile from where I work.  It's all very close and easy. :)
