Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of many things, and now it is time for you to post until the sleepy cows come home.

We got lots of snow but my office is still open so I will be dressing warmly and heading out in a while. Most likely the office will be very quiet.

Now that I finally finished watching Barney Miller and watched a few episodes of Fish (which I know understand why it wasn't a success) I have a bunch of films to catch up on the DVR. Probably will start with That's Entertainment, That's Entertainment, Too, That's Entertainment Part 3 & That's Dancing.

I completely ignored my alarm at 6:30 and again at 7 but di respond to my boss's text message at 7 :15 advising  that we were closing the office "for now" and he would let me know if I was needed to come in "later"

So I gave him an update of the day's jobs and Monday's jobs and promised to remote in for my emails so I am pretty sure that no "later" will be necessary

there is snow only a few inches so far but the wind is fierce and due to that  I already have drifts of more than a foot against our front door (which is why we keep a shovel in the  house  we often have to remove the glass and shovel our way out)

the last I heard the snow is supposed to keep coming until  this afternoon

An important distinction to remember for cold weather (although each has its usefulness):

BALACLAVA:                                                                  BAKLAVA:

There is lots of snow in Manhattan. News reports put it at 8-10 inches. I can hear the supers shoveling the walks and plows have come by at least twice. Light snow is still falling and blowing in the wind but it's supposed to stop in a few hours. On Sunday and Monday we will be in the 40s so this beautiful white stuff will be grey, dirty slush by then!

Good morning, all!  I slept in for a bit - about an hour, actually - before dragging myself out of bed. I was having a dream about being in California staying at Elaine Stritch's house and in some sort of songwriting competition.

I love snow days in NewYork: the City looks beautiful and it's so quiet, only the occasional sound of a snow shovel scraping on concrete.  People and traffic move cautiously, and it's very much as though you've entered a previous century. I expect to hear sleigh bells at any moment.

I need a warmer shirt, which I'll grab in a second, and a second cup of coffee.

Good morning, all.

Glad those in the snowlands have been able to post so far. 40 below is not a cabaret. And not my cup o' tea.

It's 25 here now, which is 5 degrees colder than they said it would be. Seems we have a few more days of that, even though tomorrow it's supposed to hit 68. Weird.

It is supposed to warm up on Sunday. So we can have a nice big snowstorm that night (right in time for the kids to go back to school on Monday morning after Christmas break).

Good morning, all.

Got to sleep in till nine this morning, which was wonderful.  It would have been even more peaceful without the stupid dream (about a Jacques Tati DVD) that wouldn't let me move on.  But, a good sleep.  A fine sleep.  The sleep I needed.

Coffee!

I wonder if DR Elmore has figured out yet that he actually slipped through a Jack Finney time warp during the night, and it's 1907 out there.

DRs Ben and vixmom should enjoy their snow day and stay cozy at home.

I see the neighbor has plowed.  I don't even know yet how much we got, but it's already sounding to me like NYC and LI and other points south got more!  I guess it's time to look at the local rag and see what they say we got.  I ain't going out there for a while.  I think the storm is just past us, but I want to KNOW it's outta here before I venture out to start cleaning.

I don't think my car has been properly prepared for these severe winter conditions. It has basically been at zero or below for the past week, and the car has not started for the past 4 or 5 days. May need a new battery. I am hoping that they don't declare a snow emergency, which would require moving the car - which ain't happening at the moment. Eventually I will call AAA.

There's a side of me that suspected I might have, but I'm not in the Dakota, and I don't know if my building was built in 1913 so I can return there. Isn't the book 1975 to 1875? It's a wonderful novel!

TOD

Last night, the remarkable DESK SET -- my remarkable discovery, to date, of 2014!

And Tati's TRAFIC (hence, the annoying dream) which I had seen but once before, and it was the perfect thing.  I loved every last thing about it.  People say it's a come-down from the major ones that preceded it, especially from the grandeur and complexity of PLAY TIME.  I say balderdash.  (Oh my.  Do I really say balderdash?  That might get me into trouble if I let one go in public, so maybe I'd better rein that one in.)  Of course it can't touch something on the scale of PLAY TIME, and yes he does rely on a few ideas from before, but it's a wonderful follow-up and I found myself laughing out loud almost uncontrollably in a few places.  You've got to go back to these after a while.  They just get better and better.

As for today, and this evening ... I don't know yet but I will be sure to report back.

I don't remember the dates, and yes, it's a novel I've meant to return to for years.  I've gone WAY the hell too long since my last reading of it.

And I've never yet read the sequel he wrote years later.  But I have it all here at the ready.

Friday morning greetings!  Sunny and cold here in SW Ohio.  I'd planned to stay in all day, but woke up with a subconjunctival hemorrhage in my left eye.  My eye doctor wants to take a look, so we'll venture up there in a couple of hours.  I wonder if it has anything to do with the shot of Novocaine that I had below that eye yesterday...

DR Elmore, the traffic seems to be moving fine on Central Ave., which I can see from here at my desk.  The eye doctor is at Breiel & Rosedale, so we don't have to go far.

Believe me, I could have done without this development.  But it's a good thing we're going to that office, because I also suspect my glasses frames are about to snap.  I've had them almost 5 years, so it's probably time for new ones.

Nevertheless, Oy!

I had my first one last summer.  Woke up one morning and had no idea anything was amiss till I looked in the mirror and saw that about a quarter of the white of one eye was bright red.  Mine cleared up in 24 hours, but I understand some of them can take days.

Yeah, DR ChasSmith, it looks way worse than it is and I didn't know about it until I looked in the mirror.

As it happens, I was at "Blobfest" during the height of summer, so I was either wearing shades or was in a dark movie theater where no one could see THE EYE.  Fortunately, they weren't showing The Crawling Eye or any other such delights.

This is a Christmas photo of part of our landlord's living room. Her living room is directly below ours. The rooms are the same size, but there the similarity ends. At the moment, ours is pretty much just filled with unopened packing boxes.     :P
Not nearly as photogenic.

It's a beautiful scene -- for someone else's home. I do want the chair, the windows and the carpet, though. And the hardwood floors underneath.

I believe I am having a vicarious snow day.  I have cranked up the heat, turned on the fireplace, and brewed a fresh cup of coffee with French Vanilla creamer.  The only thing missing is the actual snow.

Wow - there is a lot of red on this page.     :)

DR Jrand - we have the same fireplace and built-ins. However, the landlord's bay window has curved and beveled glass, which really refracts the light. Our bay also has 3 panels, but flat panes and regular glass.

I would say that is an affirmative.

So Ginny has grumpy glasses, that are about to snap.

Despite the lack of wintery weather here in Salem, Oregon 97301, I was still very much wanting to stay curled up in bed this morning.

Alas, one must go out and make a living.

Yes, but it's not a big chore.  At least not till we have a REAL blizzard with deep snowfall.  When I run the snowblower I cut a path over to it so we can get over there to blow or brush it off and make sure the snow line is below the vent slots.

DR CHAS SMITH I cannot understand people who say DESK SET is not top drawer Tracy/Hepburn....they are at the top of their game here....and the supporting cast is top notch as well.

If you read the original play (Shirley Booth starred on Broadway) - you can see how perfectly it was tailored to the two stars.....

The studio dates are set, the studio booked, the producer expecting the cast to show up prepared on the Feb. dates, and no problems with conflicts on those dates from anyone.

Until today.

Well, my astrological chart for today must be completely screwed. A delivery just arrived, with third of it missing.

Yes, I forgot to log out when we left for the eye doctor's office.  While waiting there, we decided we'd go out to lunch and to the grocery in preparation for the next snowstorm.  Just got home.

It's just a broken blood vessel in my eye, which is made worse by the blood thinners that I take.  Nothing to do but let it clear up.

Thanks for the vibes, DRs Vixmom, John G, and JRand!

I just read a review of Throne of Blood on Blu-Ray with a new buzz word. "Though some print DETRIRTUS remains, particularly noticeable in fades…"

I had to look up that word

and it means

In biology, detritus (pronounced dee-try-tus) is non-living particulate organic material (as opposed to dissolved organic material). It typically includes the bodies or fragments of dead organisms as well as fecal material.

So is it a correct usage describing images in blu-ray?  I think not

DR Ginny, I'm happy that the eye situation has been taken care of.

After the madness of the ROBERTA brouhaha, I just had a lovely phone call from Robert Kimball that perked me right up. We are on the books for lunch next Friday. It will be nice to catch up.

Tell him we want a recording of Let's Face It. (And Red, Hot and Blue!, Around the World ..., Seven Lively Arts, Mississippi Belle ...)

Made almost unbelievable progress in getting the last details of the major part of the book done. In the last two days, people have taken the time to talk with me and they have been helpful, funny, quotable and even educational. Each place that gets checked off the list feels like an answered prayer.

Hey, I've got a question:

Did anyone here post that the film of STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF was going to be released on DVD by the Warner Archive Collection?

Somewhere or other, I heard that or read it, and put it on my list to get eventually.  But I was on their site today, and nada.  I'm just trying to figure out where I heard that it was coming.

I've been on ROBERTA crises mode for the past hour. Oy!

I'm sorry, but when I look up and see that Roberta logo on my wall, I will send vibes. And I'm looking now. (Is that not the greatest logo of its time?)

I love the logo. the music publisher kept changing colors for the music.

I started to clear my drive - which I'm sure I'll be sorry I didn't complete - anyway, I heard creaking and looked up to see that the maple tree next to my driveway, which provides wonderful shade in the summer, has a huge crack that is getting bigger.  I'm afraid the tree is going to break in half.....well close to half.   The good news is that it will likely fall into the street....the bad news is I think it will fall soon.

DR ChasSmith - do you have to clear around the new generator, just in case?

Yes, but it's not a big chore.  At least not till we have a REAL blizzard with deep snowfall.  When I run the snowblower I cut a path over to it so we can get over there to blow or brush it off and make sure the snow line is below the vent slots.

I am beginning to think that snoop dog has an unnatural fascination with Chas's generator.

I would say that is an affirmative.

Eye doctor says NO, but it seems pretty coincidental to me...

By the way, DR TCB, if you'd like some actual snow for your snow day, you can have all of ours  :P

Do you deliver?

I went on this thing called a wibit with my niece today.

It does not sounds or look like it would be that hard. But OMG, all of my body parts are hurting. They said adults could do it. I am very competent in the water. But you needed such upper body strength. My niece aced it like 50 time and loved it. I only managed to complete the  course twice and fell off about 4 or 5 other times.

It was quite similar to this course. Although in a different order. And at the end there was a huge slide that went into the water.

The green mountain (2nd from left) looks so easy. But there is no where to put your feed.

And the next one you have to some how get over/under. And the one after you have to shimmy yourself across (and there is a big hole of water in the middle). And if you fall off you have to somehow try to pull yourself back up. Just to go on the first part you have to pull yourself on the mat (from deep water) holding a little hand knob!

Another long, long day of rehearsal.  Finally finished around four.  I've been adding to chapter one on and off and have probably written two pages overall.  I'll move on to chapter two later, but this book is not going to write itself as quickly as my others, mostly due to the schedule this month, which is just insane.  Last year at this time, other than the Kritzerland shows, I had nothing but writing on my plate.  Once we pass the benefit, though, time gets easier until the end of the month, so I'll probably catch up during that two weeks.  My intention is to write as much as I can over the next two weeks, but I have to do it as time permits.

Then I had a cup of chicken soup and some bacon and eggs and toast and no potatoes.  Picked up no packages.  And have been writing since.  I will now take an hour break, get my head together, and then continue writing at least another two to five pages in chapter two.

Hey, Tom,

I'll be over as soon as I get a car. After our trip to and back from Minnesota with the stops in Wisconsin I don't think Anthony is up for driving and I don't have a vehicle. If I stop in Iowa, I'll bring Cilla with me since she has a Roku and she can make sure I'm doing it correctly while we munch on veggie pizza.

We watched

Variety Girl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variety_Girl)

It's a 1947 Paramount all star bonanza. Some of it is funny but it's 90 minutes and it's too long by about 30 and some of it's pretty bad. Anthony liked it much more than I.

With the new television and antenna we now get Channel 50 which is a NJ public television station. We get Channel 13, the NY PBS but we don't get Channel 21, the signal isn't strong enough. Anthony is watching a Midsomer Murders right now on Channel 50. It's nice to get 2 different PBS stations. I wish Channel 21 would boost their signal. They are about 45 miles away. If we had a roof antenna we could probably get the station but it's not our building so I can't put an antenna on the roof.

We had no mail today either. I don't know if it's because the post office was closed or because we actually had no mail. Perhaps tomorrow we will know.

The post office was open. I got a magazine, FANFARE, and a book, JANE AUSTEN'S ENGLAND.

DR Ginny, you recommended QUENTINS after my restaurant opera composing dream, and I've been reading it for about a week now.  It's quite wonderful.

If we had a roof antenna we could probably get the station but it's not our building so I can't put an antenna on the roof.

channel 21 is about 10 miles from here  in our preVixter days  Vixdad and I used to work their begathans for them answering phones and such like I also did a couple of late night live on air spots  ( I was terrible)

because of this I was also asked to take part in  BBC documentary about Americans watching Are You Being Served

That's also how we got to meet John Inman and how he came to ask for my autograph  :)

Went out to go to the last barbecue place on my list that's in town and, wouldn't you know it, they were closed until next week. Ugh. Thankfully, I have been there and I can write something.

But I was forced to go eat at a new restaurant that features lots of cured meats. The chef is also a cancer survivor, so he has named the place Cured.

I had some fun bites, including a dish called whipped pork butter. I skipped the house-made donut bread pudding with chocolate soup and dulce de leche ice cream, though. Another time, ChasSmith. Another time.

Sounds like a deal, Ben!  Make sure you get a car that has heated seats. To keep the pizza nice and hot.  To make sure Cilla is comfortable.

When you have finished your coast to coast book tour, and your book has finished two years on top of the NY Times Best Sellers List; then you will have plenty of time for films.
