Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck; minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal's stomach and simmered for approximately three hours

Haggis is piped in at the ceremonial Burns Supper. It adds to the sense of ceremony. In Burns' poem to a haggis it is described as "great chieftain of the pudding race". Highland chieftains typically had their personal piper who played at ceremonial occasions therefore haggis has its own piper!

Address To A Haggis

 Robert Burns ,1786

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
    Great chieftain o' the pudding-race!
Aboon them a' yet tak your place,
    Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o'a grace
    As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin was help to mend a mill
    In time o'need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
    Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An' cut you up wi' ready sleight,
    Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
    Like ony ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
    Warm-reekin', rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an' strive:
Deil tak the hindmost! on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
    Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
    Bethankit! hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad make her spew
    Wi' perfect sconner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view
    On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
    As feckles as wither'd rash,
    His spindle shank, a guid whip-lash;
    His nieve a nit;
Thro' blody flood or field to dash,
    O how unfit!

    But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread.
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
    He'll mak it whissle;
An' legs an' arms, an' hands will sned,
    Like taps o' trissle.

Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
    That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu' prayer
    Gie her a haggis!

Good morning, all!  Remember all the disgusting photos that former DR Der Brucer used to post? I guess DR Michael Shayne has decided to take it over.

And the rains have landed in Manhattan. I have to go to the NYPL  Theatre Collection around noon on an errand for a friend in England.  Until then, I will work on my choral arrangement, which I would like to finish by Sunday.

DR vixmom, I enjoyed your medical history enormously.  Lady Bracknell would declare it a life crammed with incident.

BK, good news on last night's benefit!

Poached eggs and toast are usually a very good way to ease oneself back into regular eating.  Always loved that as a kid, and hell, it sounds really good right about now.

But here's a question.  What is it about poached eggs that makes us feel that way?  It seems like a very carefully made over-easy or over-medium egg is just as gentle and nice.  At least they are the way I tend to them, resulting in their being delicate and lovely, done just "enough".

Though I'm a voracious meat eater, I, too, limit myself to the standard cuts.  No brains, tongue, head, feet, innards, for me.  That kinda gal spins webs--  wait, sorry, wrong number.  And though I like a lot of seafood, including lox on a bagel and the basic kinds of sushi (it's a great carrier for soy sauce, wasabi and ginger, if nothing else!), no raw oysters or lobster innards or other too-weird things from the sea.

I could still probably enjoy a well prepared liver with bacon and onions meal, though it's been years since I've had it.  And chopped chicken liver on a bagel is an essential food group.  But I've grown way out of my childhood liking for the plate of "chicken gizzards and hearts" (with gravy, mashed potatoes, etc.) at the "nice" Sunday-dinner type restaurant we were taken to now and then in Columbus in the late '50s.  Oy!

A fried egg has grease to irritate the digestive system.

Hey, folks --

LITTLE ME at Encores!  Trumpet 4 part recreated by our own DR Elmore.

Has anyone decided anything?  If not, I'm going to grab a ticket for the Sunday matinee, February 9th, 2:00 PM.  I'm going to be cheap and grab one of the remaining first row balcony seats, just off center, unless someone says those aren't good for any reason.  Or if Saturday would REALLY work better for people, but there's already less to choose from.

I think we must needs decide this, like, today, before the few remaining decent seats are gone.

I NEVER MISS A LARRY KRAMER MUSICAL

Come see:  A divine musical parody one-on-one!
Part of John Chatterton's Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival, featuring widely diverse examples of the one-act 30-to-60-minute play
form.

New York City, at 43rd Street near 8th Avenue

A parody written by Fred Landau

Milla Ilieva (who has an album on Kritzerland) plays the Divine Miss M - more casting coming soon!

This 30-minute mini-musical takes place on the morning that Bette inexplicably and unaccountably did not get a Tony nomination.

Thanks to all for the rehearsal vibes.  Things went very well.  My lines weren't as secure as I wanted them to be....but they were better than some....so there is some work to do there.....

The director sent out an email this morning that said no evening rehearsal tonight, there is just class today from 12:30 until 5 p.m......he talked to me about coming in at six to work with my scene partner, so I am not sure it that is still happening.  I guess I will get an email if it is.

My BIG scene is the opening scene of Act Two.......my scene partner is Oley (pronounced in the Swedish way...NOT the Spanish way).

No good deed goes unpunished: I offered to go to the NYPL to see if there were a Broadway script for Alan Jay Lerner's THE DAY BEFORE SPRING.  Walking's an ordeal, and I ended up walking way too much all over the 2nd and 3rd floors. I got the libretto, Lerner's personal copy, with a lot of additions and deletions, but it doesn't follow the Broadway playbill's musical program. God knows what draft(s) this(these) pages may be. So, now I'm exhausted, my body aches, and my trip to help a friend was a dud.

I'm wet and glad to be home.

Richard officiated at a funeral today.  The deceased was the grandfather of the fiancé of our DN/goddaughter Lauren, so I accompanied him to the funeral home and the gravesite.  We went out to lunch, did a few errands, and came home to wash the cemetery mud off our shoes.

Tickets just went on sale this morning, so in case anyone has a spare 30 minutes for a one-act musical:

If you can't see Larry Kramer's THE NORMAL HEART, or even if you can - come see
I NEVER MISS A LARRY KRAMER MUSICAL

Come see:  A divine musical parody one-on-one!
Part of John Chatterton's Midwinter Madness Short Play Festival, featuring widely diverse examples of the one-act 30-to-60-minute play
form.

"I NEVER MISS A LARRY KRAMER MUSICAL, A Parody Chat with Bette Midler"
Has Been Invited To Be Part of John Chatterton’s MIDWINTER MADNESS SHORT PLAY FESTIVAL
Roy Arias Stage II – 300 West 43rd Street – 4th Floor
New York City, at 43rd Street near 8th Avenue

Three Performances – FEBRUARY 25 – MARCH 1 & 2
Tuesday February 25 – 5:45 pm - our first performance after a quick tech time, so it should be exciting - anything can happen!
Saturday March 1 – 10:15 pm and Sunday March 2 – 7 pm

A parody written by Fred Landau

Milla Ilieva (who has an album on Kritzerland) plays the Divine Miss M - more casting coming soon!

Directed by Michael Joseph Ormond (showing a totally different side after his great success with The Crucible last fall)

This 30-minute mini-musical takes place on the morning that Bette inexplicably and unaccountably did not get a Tony nomination.
The one-act piece is 30 minutes from the time we start.   A unique blend of parody with divine-Miss-M tribute.

TICKET INFO FROM ovationtix is on my blog http://music-and-comedy.blogspot.com/ (http://music-and-comedy.blogspot.com/)

Congrats, Fred!  Sounds like it'll be so much fun!!

Geez, it's Toosday already, and evening here in lovely rainy Maine.

CONGRATS, BK on your very successful benefit show last night. I've been catching some of the FB postings and pics. I so wish I could have been there.

I also hope you are feeling much better after the attack of the zombie food.

We are into our designer run-through tomorrow, and by Friday, tech. By Sunday, halfway to coming home. It feels like I stepped into a time warp, but I am happy that the show here is very good.

Have a great evening, all!

Got up at nine-thirty and was writing fifteen minutes later.  There was little of use from Sunday and Monday, even the futzing and finessing.  I redid all that stuff, took a shower and came up with what was missing, and then wrote that.  I've done about six new pages so far and I'd sorely love to do at least six more before the end of the evening.  I know how the current chapter ends and I'm only about four or five pages from that - once that happens then the next couple of chapters I at least know what happens and that's nice.

Had my first food in almost sixty hours - poached eggs on white toast with some white rice on the side.  I must say it was really good and I felt so much better getting something inside my tummy.  I think at dinner I'll have something mild, but definitely eat.

Here's the whole thing.  I had this in a story book when I was a kid and always liked it.

I know an old lady who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her.
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a bird,
How absurd to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a cat,
Imagine that, to swallow a cat!
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
I guess she'll die.
I know an old lady who swallowed a dog,
My, what a hog, to swallow a dog!
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a goat,
Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a cow,
I wonder how she swallowed a cow?!
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat,
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
I guess she'll die.

I know an old lady who swallowed a horse,
She's dead, of course!!

Feeling kinda bad for Mirai Nagasu who took third place at U.S. Nationals but was bumped from the team in favor of Ashley Wagner.  Wagner is scary-looking most of the time.  She wants everything with too much fervor and, as a result, overdoes everything.

I'm a firm believer that if you finish third and three people can go, then YOU go.  Wagner had her chance in both programs and she fell twice and finished fourth.  Falling isn't an issue if you can score enough points to overcome the fall.  Wagner did not and could not score more points.  There should be no Olympics for her.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

FWIW, if anyone can remember back to 1994, Paul Wylie finished in a qualifying position (I don't remember if we sent two or three men).  The committee was sorely tempted - and spoke out about their deliberations - to send another skater in Wylie's place who they had "thought" would make the team but who didn't.  Wylie was considered unreliable (like our national champ Jeremy  Abbott, from competition to competition).

History, of course, bears out the Olympic Committee's decision to stick to the results from nationals.  Wylie not only did well...he won the Silver Medal and, in the minds of many, should have won the Gold.  A Russian won it and the bulk of judges were from Soviet countries...so, go know.  Our national champ that year finished very low in the final results.

Feeling bad for Max Aaron who free-skated himself into third place at Nationals, but won't be going to the Olympics because only two men will go.  Sadly, Jeremy Abbott (28 years old and sporting an abominable haircut) won again and will again go to an international competition where history says he will be lackluster and disappointing.

Maybe history will be proven wrong.   But there IS Jason Brown who was very good at nationals and won the silver.

I disagree. They have to look at the overall performance and who has the best chance of doing well at the Olympics. I think Wagner has a much better shot of doing better. Plus it was her doing well at the World Championships that got them the 3rd spot.

I do think that it is a shame that only 3 get to go. That doesn't make sense to me. It would be nice if 4 or 5 got to go if they were competitive enough to do well.

Elan, you are correct I was quoting from the sonnet from  Twelfth Night

William Shakespeare
"When That I Was And a Little Tiny Boy"
(From "Twelfth Night")

When that I was and a little tiny boy,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came to man’s estate,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
‘Gainst knaves and thieves men shut the gate,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came, alas! to wive,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
By swaggering could I never thrive,
For the rain it raineth every day.

But when I came unto my beds,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
With toss-pots still had drunken heads,
For the rain it raineth every day.

A great while ago the world begun,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
But that’s all one, our play is done,
And we’ll strive to please you every day.

Watched the last season of Dexter today. Sadly, the writing was not great, even as the cast was as good as ever.

TICKET INFO FROM ovationtix is on my blog http://music-and-comedy.blogspot.com/

Great news, FJL!

Congratulations, DR John G., on finishing the magnum opus. I know it may not seem like it to you, but the project really did come together astonishingly quickly.

I heard she was contesting it, has that happened?

She decided not to contest it, which is probably wise.

I think I'm done for the evening.  Wrote about nine pages in all and will be able to give Muse Margaret exactly what I gave her last week - forty-five pages.
