Today marks the 20th anniversary of the day my mom was killed. It seems impossible that it has been that long. Probably why I can't sleep.

Vibes of comfort to the wonderful TCB. Much love to you on this terrible anniversary.

Just looked over the list of Oscar nominees. I don't think I've seen ANY of the films. But I guess there are no real surprises in the list.
DR SINGDAW I hope you let them know you are an APPLICAN!!!
And the word of the day is: SOPHIST!
DR singdaw is an apple can?
No more coffee for DR RLP
I think we can all agree that DR TCB puts the "bomp" in the "bomp-di-bomp-bomp".
{{{{{DR TCB}}}}}
DR TCB my thoughts are with you today.....even if you DO keep mentioning SHE who is name poison to me.
...And it is STILL SNOWING although it was supposed to stop two hours ago. Look out DR GINNY!

DR George - I agree with you; I always prefer fresh cat puke, myself. ;)
Hoping the beloved feline is back to 100% very soon.

TCB - Please correct that typo. It's a family site, isn't it?
:)
Kevin Spirtas just posted this on the site we will not name (FB). The Friends Theme like you have never heard it.

DR Singdaw, I hope you get the job!
Well, just jumped through another hoop in my attempts to take my final course for my master's. I had to complete an online course, and I had to have it done by today in order to begin class on Monday.
And when did they tell me about this 18-part course? Yesterday. And when did they tell me that it had to be completed today? This morning.

No Tom Hanks? The Oscars are just hopeless now, a complete joke, with all the kiddie members voting for their little flavors. And the ubiquitous nomination for Meryl Streep who is TERRIBLE in August: Osage County - Emma Thompson gave a great performance and these people are idiots. Glad at least that Judi Dench got her nomination, then again, they know her name because she's in the James Bond films. Hated American Hustle and Wolf and detest that both have so many nominations. Detest that Mr. Frears, the best director in the bunch, is not nominated for his simple and perfect work on Philomena. Of course, these yahoos don't understand anything but show-off direction so there's that.
How watered down will the production be, ChasSmith?
Since it's so quiet in here, I'll take this opportunity to say I'm going to either piano/conduct, or music/direct and piano/conduct -- depending on whether the director of the show wants to MD as well (sometimes he likes to do it all) -- a local production of AVENUE Q this fall.
There. That should get everybody's bells ringing.

It won't be. Not at all.
I think we can all agree that DR TCB puts the "bomp" in the "bomp-di-bomp-bomp".
However, I cannot decide whether DR singdaw puts the "bing" or the "bang" in the "walla-walla-bing-bang".

And I am home! Because my morning was preoccupied with LITTLE ME, i missed wishing DR singsong the best for his audition and sending him and our DR TCB vibes for good health, wealth, and happiness. I'm sending them belatedly to all the Drs; I'm very self-centered, but you are all a greatly valued part of my life, and I am most likely remiss in telling you all that often enough.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes for Health, Wealth, and Happiness to all the Drs! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, the orchestra reading went well, but the piano-conductor book is a mess. Ralph Burns' work is often brilliant, especially in the big band and jazz sections; the "Rich Kids Rag," the title song, and "I've Got Your Number" just click, but at times I kept thinking, why did he make that choice? Trumpet 4 was a huge success, especially with the player who let me know he was happy for the job!
I'm not finding Mr Viertel's disdain so amusing any more, but at least I know exactly where I stand with him; the ones I worry about are those i can't figure out.

Can't do coffee. Caffeine doesn't like me. Bummer.
The San Antonio Cocktail Conference starts tonight.
I made it out to the cemetery this afternoon. I didn't attempt to get over to my mother's grave because the ground looked pretty soggy. I was happy to see that they hadn't resold the plot that I bought for myself next to her. It is kind of a commingled family grouping. My sister's mother-in-law and father-in-law are buried on the other side of her. Strangely, the common denominator (my sister and brother-in-law) have opted out of burial in the ground altogether. They plan to be buried one of top of the other (Don't go there!) in the mausoleum.
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the day my mom was killed. It seems impossible that it has been that long. Probably why I can't sleep.
Yay for Trumpet 4!!!
DR Elmore:
(I'm looking at my copy of the PC score as we speak, for the first time since I "did" the show ten years ago. Don't even ask. The ground should be sowed with salt.)
I remembered it being really difficult to read and learn. Is that what you meant by it being a mess? If I'm remembering the right one, little niceties like key signatures were apparently considered an unaffordable luxury by whoever penned it. Yes, just found some! Oh, I see -- you get one at the top of every page. That's the deal. Okay. But as I page through this I can't believe I actually "knew" it at one time, because it sure does look unrecognizable now. Well, good thing I pulled it out. I can't go to Encores! without reacquainting myself with this.
If you feel like going into any detail, what would be examples of something you'd question about Ralph Burns' choices?
Those big band sections, yes, wonderful.
Wow, thanks for that. I'll check all of those things out. I love thisshstuff.

Those big band sections, yes, wonderful.
I question a lot of the orchestration for "Real Live Girl," which often seems harmonically murky with all of his additional notes he throws in, like the spot where the thumb line is a B-flat in an F chord pom-pah-pah, those busy spots in "Goodbye" where the strings and high winds are continually clashing against the chromatic melody in the brass, things like that. Also, the Sinking number has a lot of cues in the P/C that were clearly cut in the orchestra parts but remain in the piano-conductor. A lot of his underscoring is just too complicated at times. My score went back to the Encores! office, so I can't pull out more examples.
I'm a big Ralph Burns fan, but I think his heart's in the big band stuff and the pastiche music, like all the 1916 jazz things, but not necessarily in writing for strings.

Speaking of the Oscars, I just can't get any desire up to see HER. I know it has gotten some very good reviews, but I have no interest. Mostly, I think, because of Joaquin Phoenix. That dude fell off the nutty buddy truck a long time ago.

When my mother died in 1994, my dad went crazy and bought plots for himself, me, the Macbeths, Randy and Jo, and my cousin Sue Ellen. Whenever he and I would visit Mom, he'd show me where we were all going to be buried.

James Marsden is certainly a cutie!
Book group was fun tonight. We discussed Dear Life, the latest book of short stories by 2013 Nobel literature prize winner Alice Munro. We also heard about Katie's upcoming trip to Panama, Lynne's to Antarctica, and Jan's Amazon River cruise.
