Title: BELLS ARE RINGING
Post by: bk on January 16, 2014, 12:35:26 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had bells that were ringing, and now it is time for you to post until the bell-ringing cows come home.

Topic of the Day:

For theater, it's (of course) musicals. :)

I'll have to think about movies and books.

BK, we need to find you a waterproof computer.  Then you could do all of your writing in the shower, and the book would be done in what?  Two hours?

T.O.D.

BOOKS - Mysteries

THEATER - Musicals

FILM - ??  I don't really know

TV - I would normally say sitcoms, but the current crop is so poor, there aren't many worth watching.

Exception:  THE BIG BANG THEORY, THE NEIGHBORS, Anything with Debra Messing

Good morning, all!  I am quite sleepy; I keep having anxiety attacks, and the weather is far too warm to sleep comfortably.

This morning, I am off to the orchestra reading of the LITTLE ME score, so I'll her what the new Trumpet 4 part sounds like.  That will take up most of my day.

I may see Charlotte this evening since I postponed our date last night. It all depends on her schedule.

My main point was that I enjoy pretty much any genre that's out there, but I still haven't read any long-form non-serial writing on anything other than paper.

No Tom Hanks?  The Oscars are just hopeless now, a complete joke, with all the kiddie members voting for their little flavors.  And the ubiquitous nomination for Meryl Streep who is TERRIBLE in August: Osage County - Emma Thompson gave a great performance and these people are idiots.  Glad at least that Judi Dench got her nomination, then again, they know her name because she's in the James Bond films.  Hated American Hustle and Wolf and detest that both have so many nominations.  Detest that Mr. Frears, the best director in the bunch, is not nominated for his simple and perfect work on Philomena.  Of course, these yahoos don't understand anything but show-off direction so there's that.

Since it's so quiet in here, I'll take this opportunity to say I'm going to either piano/conduct, or music/direct and piano/conduct -- depending on whether the director of the show wants to MD as well (sometimes he likes to do it all) -- a local production of AVENUE Q this fall.

There.  That should get everybody's bells ringing.

Well, just jumped through another hoop in my attempts to take my final course for my master's. I had to complete an online course, and I had to have it done by today in order to begin class on Monday.

And when did they tell me about this 18-part course? Yesterday. And when did they tell me that it had to be completed today? This morning.

~~~VIBES OF ALL KINDS!!~~~
And I am home! Because my morning was preoccupied with LITTLE ME, i missed wishing DR singsong the best for his audition and sending him and our DR TCB vibes for good health, wealth, and happiness. I'm sending them belatedly to all the Drs; I'm very self-centered, but you are all a greatly valued part of my life, and I am most likely remiss in telling you all that often enough.
So, the orchestra reading went well, but the piano-conductor book is a mess. Ralph Burns' work is often brilliant, especially in the big band and jazz sections; the "Rich Kids Rag," the title song, and "I've Got Your Number" just click, but at times I kept thinking, why did he make that choice? Trumpet 4 was a huge success, especially with the player who let me know he was happy for the job!
I'm not finding Mr Viertel's disdain so amusing any more, but at least I know exactly where I stand with him; the ones I worry about are those i can't figure out.
No Tom Hanks?  The Oscars are just hopeless now, a complete joke, with all the kiddie members voting for their little flavors.  And the ubiquitous nomination for Meryl Streep who is TERRIBLE in August: Osage County - Emma Thompson gave a great performance and these people are idiots.  Glad at least that Judi Dench got her nomination, then again, they know her name because she's in the James Bond films.  Hated American Hustle and Wolf and detest that both have so many nominations.  Detest that Mr. Frears, the best director in the bunch, is not nominated for his simple and perfect work on Philomena.  Of course, these yahoos don't understand anything but show-off direction so there's that.
Amen to that, bk
Finally am getting this cold under control.  Next is getting my voice back from all the coughing and I can get back to all that is normal.  Cough syrup with codeine has seemed to do the trick.  Everything is draining, which is reeking havoc on my throat, but there is no temperature so I'm pretty sure there is no infection.   It's more of a nuisance than anything else.  In the meantime, I can give my best Harvey Firestien singing impression.
Since it's so quiet in here, I'll take this opportunity to say I'm going to either piano/conduct, or music/direct and piano/conduct -- depending on whether the director of the show wants to MD as well (sometimes he likes to do it all) -- a local production of AVENUE Q this fall.
There.  That should get everybody's bells ringing.
Congrats!!!   Have a great time with the show.
It doesn't really need to be.  Except for the Nightmare, one production I saw omitted it, which was fine, didn't miss it.  Other production I saw tried to be creative with it, and it didn't land.
I made it out to the cemetery this afternoon.  I didn't attempt to get over to my mother's grave because the ground looked pretty soggy.  I was happy to see that they hadn't resold the plot that I bought for myself next to her.  It is kind of a commingled family grouping.  My sister's mother-in-law and father-in-law are buried on the other side of her.  Strangely, the common denominator (my sister and brother-in-law) have opted out of burial in the ground altogether.  They plan to be buried one of top of the other (Don't go there!) in the mausoleum.
Yay for Trumpet 4!!!
DR Elmore:
(I'm looking at my copy of the PC score as we speak, for the first time since I "did" the show ten years ago.  Don't even ask.  The ground should be sowed with salt.)
I remembered it being really difficult to read and learn.  Is that what you meant by it being a mess?  If I'm remembering the right one, little niceties like key signatures were apparently considered an unaffordable luxury by whoever penned it.  Yes, just found some!  Oh, I see -- you get one at the top of every page.  That's the deal.  Okay.  But as I page through this I can't believe I actually "knew" it at one time, because it sure does look unrecognizable now.  Well, good thing I pulled it out.  I can't go to Encores! without reacquainting myself with this.
If you feel like going into any detail, what would be examples of something you'd question about Ralph Burns' choices?
Those big band sections, yes, wonderful.
When my mother died in 1994, my dad went crazy and bought plots for himself, me, the Macbeths, Randy and Jo, and my cousin Sue Ellen. Whenever he and I would visit Mom, he'd show me where we were all going to be buried.
Those big band sections, yes, wonderful.
I question a lot of the orchestration for "Real Live Girl," which often seems harmonically murky with all of his additional notes he throws in, like the spot where the thumb line is a B-flat in an F chord pom-pah-pah, those busy spots in "Goodbye" where the strings and high winds are continually clashing against the chromatic melody in the brass, things like that.  Also, the Sinking number has a lot of cues in the P/C that were clearly cut in the orchestra parts but remain in the piano-conductor. A lot of his underscoring is just too complicated at times. My score went back to the Encores! office, so I can't pull out more examples.
I'm a big Ralph Burns fan, but I think his heart's in the big band stuff and the pastiche music, like all the 1916 jazz things, but not necessarily in writing for strings.
There are a lot of badly copied notes in the score, and that doesn't help either, but there are far too many chords packed with extra notes (13ths, 11ths) that just sound murky in the underscorings.
If it were a church job, i hope he didn't begin with his standard "Roll Me over in The Clover."  I keep telling him to stick with "Abide with Me."
 ;D
Actually, I knocked their socks off with a little put-together that I like to call "Abide with Me in the Clover."
Speaking of the Oscars, I just can't get any desire up to see HER. I know it has gotten some very good reviews, but I have no interest.  Mostly, I think, because of Joaquin Phoenix.  That dude fell off the nutty buddy truck a long time ago.
I don't mind Joaquin...I'm just not interested in the conceit of the movie.
Since it's so quiet in here, I'll take this opportunity to say I'm going to either piano/conduct, or music/direct and piano/conduct -- depending on whether the director of the show wants to MD as well (sometimes he likes to do it all) -- a local production of AVENUE Q this fall.
There.  That should get everybody's bells ringing.
Congrats, ChasSmith!  Break Many Legs!!
I made it out to the cemetery this afternoon.  I didn't attempt to get over to my mother's grave because the ground looked pretty soggy.  I was happy to see that they hadn't resold the plot that I bought for myself next to her.  It is kind of a commingled family grouping.  My sister's mother-in-law and father-in-law are buried on the other side of her.  Strangely, the common denominator (my sister and brother-in-law) have opted out of burial in the ground altogether.  They plan to be buried one of top of the other (Don't go there!) in the mausoleum.
When my mother died in 1994, my dad went crazy and bought plots for himself, me, the Macbeths, Randy and Jo, and my cousin Sue Ellen. Whenever he and I would visit Mom, he'd show me where we were all going to be buried.
A few years ago, my niece's paternal grandparents bought cemetery plots for themselves (Hilary's grandfather died shortly after that).  Anyway, my parents were close to them, so they bought their cemetery plots and my sister bought herself and her daughter plots and my sister's boyfriend bought himself a plot AND my sister bought ME a plot as my Christmas present(!) even though it was the middle of summer when this all happened.
And when did they tell me about this 18-part course? Yesterday. And when did they tell me that it had to be completed today? This morning.
Watching one hilariously awful movie called "Only God Forgives." Ryan Gosling is some drug dealer in Asia who is supposed to avenge his brother's death. Plenty of killings. Plenty of atrocious acting, with Kristin Scott Thomas as the foul-mouthed mother of the two boys being the worst of the worst. But the movie is gorgeous to look at, even as the violence gets crazy.
I am happy this day is over.  A wasted morning dealing with stupid CD stuff, all of which turned out to be unnecessary drama and everything was fine.  I only had time to futz and finesse one page, then I went and had a Cobb Salad but without any meat - it was actually really good, so I guess I'm finally back to rights.  I had a bagel with it, and then splurged and had some tap tap tapioca pudding for dessert.  By the time I got home I only had an hour left before I had to leave for the theater.  I guess I got about one page done, then showered and left.  Since I was on the road at two-fifty the last thing I expected was the drive from hell, but that's what I got.  The twenty-five minute drive took almost an hour - at THREE in the afternoon!  I got to the theater just in time.  Then it became immediately apparent that the twenty people we were going to be auditioning weren't going to show up - in all, three did.  What a waste of my time and energy when I could have been home happily writing away.  At six-thirty I met Sami and her mom at a nearby place and I had a little flatbread thing that's like cheese on a cracker, and some fries.  We all returned to the theater and I decided to just get home so I could get back to writing.  That turned out to be a terrible decision.  I got on the freeway at 7:30 and it took thirty minutes to go one mile.  That's right.  I finally got off and took Beverly Glen, but didn't get home until eight-thirty.  Had I but stayed for the show I would have gotten home an hour later, but had no frustration and I would have seen what apparently was one of our best shows with a great and loud audience.  Oh, well.  Oh, and while I was having the ride from hell to the theater and approaching Wilshire Blvd on Beverly Glen, the traffic was backed up so far it was nauseating.  But to the right, which usually has at least some parked cars, was empty all the way, so I decided to just pass up all the yahoos since it was free and clear.  I got to my right and began and about thirty feet later some doofus just slightly swerved his car towards me because, guess what, he was texting - I had to slightly swerve to my right and in so doing my car hit a trash can - no problem there really, other than it completely decapitated my passenger side mirror - cut clean off.  So, I called the Infiniti dealer and ordered a new one.
Once home, I took the bull by the horns and called Tall Girl, the singer I used to work with and whose act I directed.  She's going to cover both gals in the show from now to the end of the run.  She'll go on for Dana for the first six shows in the new space, and then Dana will return and she'll cover Jane for the rest of the run.  She's really the only one I know who can do both tracks, so I think that's a good thing.  I only thought of her because one of the gals who auditioned was really tall.
One is the French Blu-ray from France, the restored "Lola (http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B0091LLVCA/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), by Jacques Demy, with Anouk Aimée (fortunately, it does have English subtitles).  It's part one of, and starts the trilogy that is continued with "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00DM1CGAG/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1)" and ends with "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B003TP3UPA/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)," which I had received a couple of weeks ago. :D
The other item that I received also came from France.  It's the complete vocal score to the movie, "Les Parapluies De Cherbourg (http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B004HTA67M/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) (Piano Et Voix).  I can't play it, but I certainly can follow along with the movie!
I could've gotten it from Amazon.com, but it cost almost the same...there was only a couple of dollars difference between ordering it from the US versus France.  And it's kind of cool to say that I actually got the French vocal score to the French movie from France.
So, some time soon I'll take some time and put the Region B Blu-ray in my multi-region Blu-ray player and read along with the score.
Most of the people who work in the other Collection Management areas (cataloging, processing, etc.) leave early in the day on Friday, so someone should be there when they're there...hence my early work tomorrow.
