Title: SOAP OPERA
Post by: bk on August 24, 2004, 12:00:43 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know it's the days of our lives, you're young and restless and therefore it is not time to post until the bold and the beautiful cows come home to another world.

With those wonderful reviews BK there is surely hope of financial backing for a recording! We live in hope.

Singin' in the Rain is not only one of the best "Hollywood" films, it's one of the best films ever made, period.

Even the possibility of a recording is great news!  ALW & Frank Wildhorn should have such reviews!!  I'll bet they're jealous (even though they're composers and don't direct their own work)!

The first movie I could think of about movies was "Day For Night" but of course it's not Hollywood.
I'll go for "Singing In the Rain". too.

Fell asleep early and missed the changing of the guard.
Also missed I DO, I DO -- which I was intending to see. Drat.

Favorite films about Hollywooe: I think all have been named -- SINGING IN THE RAIN; SUNSET BOULEVARD; A STAR IS BORN; INSIDE DAISY CLOVER. I'll add THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (although I haven't seen it in decades). I'll think of more later.

Sunset Blvd, Singin' In the Rain, Inside Daisy Clover, A Star is Born (JG)....

to them, I will add:

Valley of the Dolls, Harlow, and Stand-In.  Oh, and World Premiere with Frances Farmer and John Barrymore....so funny!

Well so far everyone has mentioned the best and campiest titles. I like to add two films about the silent era that while did not get great reviews I remember enjoy seeing the. But I wonder if I saw them again today would I have the same opinion.  They are:

Won Ton Ton: The Dog That Save Hollywood
Nicklodeon

As followers of the Northwest gathering now know, Jane and JMK (Jeff) made the connection between me and Jeff's rabbi - we're first cousins. My cousin and I have since exchanged e-mails. I determined that the last time we saw each other was Passover in the year of FOLLIES (is there any other frame of reference?). That would have been 33 years ago.

DR Dan(the Man) & DR Matt H. :  Thank you for remembering the TZ episode about toys I mentioned yesterday.  When I talk about the TZ with other people and I mention this episode, no one remembers it.  Some people claim I made it up!  So now, I feel a little surer about my memory.   And a little saner. :)

DR Matt H.: I love episode "Twenty Two"!  I had totally forgotten about it until I read your post.  "Room For One More Honey" is such a chilling line.  I can still see the nurse's face!

A Note To All DRs:

As you can see from my above post, I am sometimes "late" with my responses.  Not to get into a long story, but my computer access during the day and early evening hours is limited.   But Never Fear!  I read all the posts and I will always try to respond as soon as I can.
Thank you in advance for understanding.

Speaking of soap operas, this just in from DR Evil Twin:
I just wanted to let you know that I am going to be on ONE LIFE TO LIVE this Tuesday, August 24, ABC-TV at 2:00.  I know it's short notice...sorry.

You will see me with Addie (Pamela Playton-Wright) as she spends the day at Landview with Dorian (Robyn Strasser).  I don't reaslly have much at all this time, but this makes my 4th appearance as Sr. Angelica, plus a voice over, and a walk on with my dog, Miss Gooch.

So, wether I have a lot of dialogue, or nothing at all, it's just really fun to be on TV.

Just saying a quick hello. Things have been sort of crazy the past few weeks with training for my internship. (They call hanging from  tree 35 feet up in the air leadership training?) Haha. Well I am busy busy busy, but I will try to make a stop in here every once in awhile to say hi, but I can't guarantee anything because like I said I am busy busy busy. I don't usually stay up past 11 anymore. I am getting old! :) Favorite movie's include Singin in The Rain and A Star is Born. (Not very unique I know.) :)

BK, add my congratualtions on the reviews!  I think it's astounding what you and your cohorts have accomplished in the short time y'all worked to put What If? together.  I really wish I could be out there to see it.  But maybe I'll get to see the NYC premier?

All of my first-hand pics for Hollywood movies have been mentioned.  Two others I can name are The Player and S.O.B.  I also liked (though I haven't seen it in years) The Scarlett O'Hara Wars, a TV movie about the casting of Gone With The Wind's leading role.  A very funny movie with some funny performances from Tony Curtis (as Selznick), Sharon Gless (Carole Lombard) and Carrie Nye (as Tallulah, natch!).  I'll have to see if this is on DVD...

All of my favorites have been named as well, but they would certainly include A STAR IS BORN (Cukor/Garland version), THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, SUNSET BLVD., and SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.

Bette Davis' movie called THE STAR is a very interesting but not well written examination of a star's faded life and her ambition to make it big again. Bette's wonderful in a sequence on a soundstage where she battles with the director over interpretation of a role. She was not a method actress, but she must have been playing herself in that scene!

Congrats to all involved in WHAT IF...? on some lovely revue reviews.

Good job-hunting vibes to DR SWW (and any others out there who might need them...)

My favorite Hollywood films have been mentioned, both good ones and campy ones.  One that I don't think I have seen above, however, is WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (which I guess is both good AND campy!)  I think that it should be included as well.

It's been an extremely frustrating day so far.

The task I need to complete before going out of town is the annual application to the Kleban Foundation.  This means I have to make them a tape of eight of my songs (they judge lyrics, not music).  All technology stymies me, you should know.

I'm trying to structure my application like a musical, so, the first number on the tape is supposed to be the big opening number from Area 51.  In order to make the best tape possible, I thought I'd go back to the tape I had rolling at the final performance.

It's a DAT.  At the time, I bought a DAT recorder (Walkman) because the man at the store told me it was the best thing I could use to make a permanent recording of a live theatre experience.  I paid a fortune for it, and the microphone.  And, not being technically minded, I could hear nothing wrong with the recording I made.  Of course, it has the stomping sound of 34 dancers on stage, but, what more could I do?

So, it takes me some time to hook up the DAT to my stereo, so I can dub to cassette tape, and I gingerly put my "permanent" DAT into the DAT machine, which promptly eats the tape.  Foolishly, I then put the other "permanent" DAT of another performance into the DAT machine, which promptly eats that tape, too.

The closing number - and I've not gotten to this yet - is something that I've a video of.  (Can't seem to find an audio.)  So I need to make an audio dub of that.  But the videotape is on a high inaccessibly shelf and I haven't, as yet, figured out how to get the VCR to play into the stereo.

Looks like the time out of town will be delayed.  And truncated.

In thinking about today's TOD, I was reminded of all those musicals in the 1940s where people like Judy Garland and June Allyson and Kathryn Grayson and Mickey Rooney wanted to be "on the stage." I find it fascinating that they never dreamed of being "in the movies."

Occasionally Debbie Reynolds in I LOVE MELVIN would have a dream about being a film star (she was already on the stage playing a football), but for so many, a theater career was what they were seeking, not a movie career. Do you think it was Hollywood's way of being humble?

May I please comment without upsetting anyone?

While "Singin' in the Rain" is a joyous, colorful, wonderful movie musical without a flaw, I have to confess I don't love it as much as others, most especially "The Wizard of Oz."

I go long stretches not wanting to watch "Singin' in the Rain" while I find I can sit and watch "The Wizard of Oz" at almost any time it's playing.

Dan TM - Yes, I'll add SOB and THE PLAYER to my list. I also love SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS, but it didn't spring into my head as a "Hollywood" movie - which it is - because even thought the film world is the jumping off point, the "real world" travels are what I think of when I think of the movie. (Is that convoluted enough?)

Today was my first therapy session....

....and may I just say....

.....OWWWWWWE-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E!

[sniff]

Most of it went very well, with the therapist manipulating my arm and elbow joint with assuredness and care.

But the ultimate infliction was the arm-straightening routine which I must now go through several times a day for 20 reps per time.  It's a full extension and then bending of the arm in one position.

I have all these little twinges now...like little electric shocks going off in various places along my arm.

It's also a bit enervating.

I vaguely remember a Beech Nut Fruit chewing gum commercial that had the animated animals singing something like "Yipes, Stripes!".  A toothpaste ad doesn't ring a bell (though I think Pepsodent was the first toothpaste to have stripes.)

The only time I cannot bare to watch TWOO is when it's showing on a broadcast channel and it has incessant commercial interruptions.  But otherwise, both TWOO and SITR are two movies that I can start watching at any point and will enjoy through to the end.  Likewise, Dr Zhivago, though it's definately another kind of film.

"Yipes, Stripes! Beech Nut's got em'

The tag was for Beech Nut Fruit Stripe Gum. I remember it well.

Here is some information on the creator of the ad campaign:

"As a music major at Mount Holyoke College, Linda Conway Correll dreamed of writing for Broadway.  A season of producing and performing off-Broadway plays for children in New York City, for which she had written the music, convinced her she needed a steadier way to earn a living.  Accepting an entry-level position at Young & Rubicam Advertising, Correll was soon offered the opportunity to write a jingle to introduce a new product for Beech-Nut.  The Yipes! Stripes! campaign ran for three years, receiving recognition at Cannes, and her advertising career was born."

Well, here I am, reporting live from school. I finally got online after trying three other computers that didn't work. The one I'm using now is pretty old and unreliable. It keeps logging me out so I can't post, and the colors on the monitor are realy weird. Or is the site just funny today? You'd think with all the money this school is soaking out of everybody, they'd be able to keep some computers around that were made some time after the last ice age.

I just got out of my new Shakespeare class, in which we discussed blank verse for an hour and fifteen minutes. It was very exciting. (I'm being sarcastic, by the way.) My teacher compulsively straightened all the papers on his desk several times, and when they were all straight and perfectly even, he messed them up so he could straighten them again.

Someone asked me a while back if there was any Cherry Coke on campus. I now have an answer for you, whoever it was. I went all over this campus looking for Cherry Coke just for you. (Yeah, I did it for you. I don't even remember who asked.) There is no Cherry Coke on campus, as far as I can tell, but the place across the street will sell you a 32 ounce Cherry Coke for 49 cents. I was very excited.

The highlights from yesterday:

My Survey of English Lit teacher talked so much that we left the room ten minutes after class was supposed to end. But he never actually said anything. I sat there with my pencil and paper, trying to take notes, but there was nothing to write down. I did note, however, that his voice sounds very much like Guy Haines', and that he said "unseemly" at some point during his rambling.

My Poetry teacher was old and pretty boring, but he did tell us that all of Emily Dickinson's poetry can be sung to the tune of "The Yellow Rose of Texas." I was singing that on the bus all the way home. I think I annoyed everybody else. But you get all types on the bus, so maybe no one noticed.

It was me, DR Sandra, who asked about the availability of Cherry Coke. I do hope that you will finish out the school year, even though the school is lacking in important supplies. Don't spend all your time (or money) at the store across the street. You will need to put in some seat time in some of those "exciting" classes. Can you, at least, slip into class with a 32 ounce Cherry Coke?

Good Afternoon!

Well, my "early to bed" routine last night seems to have done the trick.  I woke up today feeling much better, and truly rested.  Of course, now I'm really tempted to crawl back in bed for the rest of they day, but instead I finally took care of some e-mails, postcards and such this morning.  A nice relaxing morning, and I plan on having a nice relaxing afternoon.  I have to venture out to North Hollywood tomorrow to meet up with some friends, so I shall save my venturing out until then.  Oh, but I am venturing out tonight too, but I won't have to log any major foot traffic time to get there.

*When I went out for my walk yesterday afternoon, I kept catching myself "rushing" for no apparent reason.  I had to check myself every now and then.  No hurries.  No worries.  I guess I'm so used to walking in NYC - where one usually has to walk fast in order not to be run over by everyone else.

I have to say that I, too, don't revere SINGIN' IN THE RAIN as the greatest musical ever made. I find it beautifully done and loads of fun, but there are several other musicals I would much rather just sit down and watch. And this isn't the first time I've said that. But I'd watch OZ, EASTER PARADE, ON THE TOWN, SEVEN BRIDES, IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER, ST. LOUIS more often than SIIR if I had my choice.

Fortunately, for us home video enthusiasts, I can watch any of those whenever I wish.

For those of you who remember Matthew Metzger from the AMERICAN IDOL semifinal rounds (he didn't make it to the final 12 even though he was a better singer than at least three of the finalists), he started this week on ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

He's a dreadful actor, by the way, and is obviously constantly referring to his lines which are being kept off camera for him. Still, I guess he can learn on the job, and he is very pretty to look at.

If any of you have SoaopNet, ONE LIFE TO LIVE replays today's episode at 9 p.m. EDT.

Jennifer, Matthew Rogers was the football player, and he made it to the finals finishing 11th.

Matthew Metzger was the very, very attractive singer (dirty blonde hair, always smiling) who was in the wild card round but didn't get picked by any of the judges or the audience.

I think Matthew Metzger was the blond dude who just missed being a finalist in the callback shows prior to selection of the final 12.

What I LOVE about this forum, more than anything, is that you can throw out a couple of words and, even if you misremember what they were in relation to, someone will not only clarify the situation, but they will share artwork and whatnot about it, as well.

There was also a "Stripe" toothpaste!  Remember???!!!

Here are a couple of things I've remembered that I've not been able to learn more about:

Back in the late 1950s-early 1960s, one of the major cake mix companies (maybe Duncan Hines) introduced a series of colonial-style cake mixes.  The advertising was period, as well, and you were sold on the early American goodness with rich spices and nuts as part of the mix.  Anyone recall that????

And Life Magazine, back in the late-50s-early 60s ran a photo feature on three young folks -- all of them were in their teens at the time, but they were no bigger than 6-year-olds.  They had been discovered stashed away in their parents' attic.  There was a boy and two girls.  They had been deprived of sunlight most of their lives.  They weren't emaciated, but they were very underdeveloped.  The story amazed and fascinated me at the time.  I never recall Life following up on that story and I've often wondered about those kids (who would be in their late 50s-early 60s now).

Does anyone else recall that story???

The boy went to Australia RLP.  He is still much the same height. He lives with his partner and two dogs. He is certainly still not emaciated. Due to childhood trauma he lives in a flat roofed house - no attic. He will be 59 in December. lol

Just a brief post. I decided that if I didn't organize my place - I would go mad. MAD, do you hear? So, I'm organizing. But in my one brief visit out into the world today I managed to lose one of the little diamond earrings (studs - but I won't say that or there will be 20 jokes) that I wear even to bed. I'm not one for "stuff" - I could care less. But I happen to like these little earrings very much. And they're worth a bit of money. I retraced my steps, but I think it's gone. Oh well. That's what I get for trying to bring order into my life. I did find a shiny new penny while I was looking for the earring. Maybe that means luck.

A note that Dan Petrie (Sr) - a lovely man and a wonderful director - died yesterday at 83. He was originally from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia - if any of you saw THE BAY BOY with Liv Ullmann and Kiefer Sutherland, that was a somewhat autobiographical film of his early life. He was a fine TV director and directed a number of good movies, as well - A RAISIN IN THE SUN, being one. Each time I saw him, we would say, "We must work together soon!" And that really was an intention, I do believe, on both our parts. He'll be missed by many.

Evening all!

I can’t believe I missed chat last night!  And by a mere 7 minutes!  Ugh!   I’ve been busy with a couple little pet projects and just didn’t realize chat was about to happen.  Sorry!

I’m glad you all liked my Lady Bug story.  I do feel like (s)he will bring me luck.  Come on lotto numbers!

Wonderful reviews!  How proud you all must be of What If and rightly so!

I was so sorry to read about the job loss, SSW but as they say, “When one door closes, another one opens!”  Let’s hope the next job will be a much, much better one.

Best wishes and good heath vibes to DR Elmore!  Your on the mend, I just know it!

One Life to Live is the only soap opera I kinda keep up on because my mom likes it and I wanted to have something to talk to her about.  It was boring to me before the guy who used to play the vampire on “Port Charles” showed up.  Hubba, Hubba!   I don’t know what it is about him, the hair or because he has one of those kind of voices that I really like.

I was going to mention the repeats on Soap Net but someone beat me to it.  That’s the only way I keep up with the show.  I normally catch a few of them on the weekend.  Just enough to keep me up to date with what going on.

Hang in there RLP!  You’ll be better than new in no time!

Noel, forgive me but DAT sounds like it could be a problem!  Ta dumb boom.   ;D

Don’t worry Panni.  I’m forever saying the wrong thing at the right time.  Or the right thing at wrong time.  It’s a gift, I tell ya!

I just attempted to photograph some black cockatoos. It is so difficult - to get close enough and to have them against a suitable background.  No doubt these photographs will stay in Colin's camera for a while too.  It looks as though  we will be taking a borrowed Digital camera (plus our usual  "old fashioned" ones and a video camera) to France.  After 5 weeks away form the board I shall no doubt be posting quite a few pictures - maybe even of our friend François.

Enjoyed LOVE NEST. I had never seen the whole thing, so there were surprises in it for me. Also, Marilyn was SO much better in this than in ALL ABOUT EVE, so composed and secure (on the screen). No wonder she became a phenomenon; with her beauty and appeal, she makes the otherwise appealing June Haver appear very ordinary. June had talent but no sparkle in most of the things I've seen her in. marilyn always had that sparkle.

I am so happy that the person who won the Young & The Restless walk-on was a big Y&R fan. I had no idea till watching tonight's show.

(I won't reveal the name since the show isn't over on the West Coast yet).

By the way, I am now accepting donations of the Cliff's Notes for Under Western Eyes, The Master and Margarita, Children of the Sun, Cancer Ward, The Captive Mind, I Served the King of England, Lenin's Tomb, Mrs. Dalloway, Wuthering Heights, and various Shakespeare plays.

I will also have to perform one of Shakespeare's monologues or scenes. Anyone have a suggestion?

I don't know if I will be allowed to bring my Cherry Coke to class, but I would like to see one of my teachers try to take it away from me.

Can we talk about Soap Operas?  I've been wanting to hear about soap operas all day.

When I was in 3rd grade, my sister and I got hooked on Dark Shadows, and consequently, on General Hospital.  This was back in the days when it was about Dr. Hardy and Jessie Brewer and Audrey and Lee and Phil.  Jessie Brewer was always falsly accused of murdering someone and put on trials and always found guilty (of course, she was always freed at the last minute when the real murderer was revealed.)

For all the strum and drang she went through, you would think that Jessie would have more to do in her later years on the show than being consigned to wearing sweaters and standing behind the nurses desk.
