Post by: bk on January 18, 2014, 12:50:43 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in both 3 dimensions and 2 dimensions, and now it is time for you to post until the 3-D cows come home.

TOD

Three places

The Expo 67/Man and His World exhibition sites. They continued the shows until the building started to fall apart (The majority were not constructed to last and were not winterized) and it was hard to get countries and other exhibiters. The only pavilions still standing are the US Biosphere &  The Quebec pavilion and France which are no part of the Casino.

Place #2

Belmont Park the original amusement park that even had a side/freak show. Went to that once that it was too phony. It was eventually closed and torn down to make way for more homes. The other amusement park La Ronde is still open. They have the fireworks festival there every summer now.

Place #3

The old movie palaces that are all gone. The Seville, The Monkland, Palace, Loewes, The Capitol. Fond memories of all them.

One theater the Imperial is still around and is used for special events and the Montreal film festival. It was the Cinerama theater, but I never saw any movies there in that format. They converted into two cinemas and then restored it.

I been listening to all the songs nominated for the Academy Award including the song "Alone Yet Not Alone" from the film of the same.

The film played for three weeks in LA to qualify and then disappeared.

It reminds me of the 1976 Half A House and the song A World That Never Was.
DR  Druxy's client was the composer and he came up with the idea to call a toll free number to hear the song so people could vote for it. The writers were old Academy favorites Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster.

Now there is Youtube and other social media

Which may explain how "Alone Yet Not Alone" was able to get a nomination. Bruce Broughton the composer hired publicist Ray Costa to campaign for the song's inclusion. When that approach failed, he placed a series of personal calls to voters. Broughton is the former head of the Academy's music branch. The orchestrator was the guy who conducted the orchestra for the show the last few years and this year's show too.

There were 75 songs eligible this year. Here is a list of the more high profile songs. Remember the singers are not eligible. The writers are

"Atlas" (performed by Coldplay for 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire') and "Sweeter Than Fiction" (performed by Swift for 'One Chance'), both of which were nominated for Golden Globes, or "I See Fire" (performed by Ed Sheeran in 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'), "So You Know What It's Like" (performed by Keith Stanfield in 'Short Term 12'), "Young and Beautiful" (performed by Lana Del Rey in 'The Great Gatsby'), "Unfinished Songs" (music and lyrics by six-time best original song Oscar nominee Diane Warren and performed by Terence Stamp in 'Unfinished Song'), "You and I Ain't Nothin' No More" (performed by Gladys Knight and Lenny Kravitz in Lee Daniels' 'The Butler'), "Last Mile Home" (performed by Kings of Leon in 'August: Osage County'), "100$ Bill" (performed by Jay Z in 'The Great Gatsby'), "Rise Up" (performed by Beyonce in 'Epic'), "We Both Know" (performed by Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw in 'Safe Haven') and "Cut Me Some Slack" (performed by Paul McCartney and the surviving members of Nirvana in 'Sound City').

Good morning, all!  When the alarm rang, I was having one of those "the world is ended and we must move elsewhere" dreams, and it was a truly strange group of survivors, made up of several of my musical theatre and opera performer friends!  We did a lot of foraging and never went anywhere. It was all rather frustrating and I was quite delighted to get out of bed and forget about it.

Today and tomorrow, I'm devoted to getting over the hump of this choral arrangement, and finishing it.

More coffee.

"Cloverdale" - sounds like it should be a title of a movie, like Pleasantville.

Maybe a town where every flower is a clover, and if you find a four-leaf clover, your wishes come true, maybe with a fun twist

I loved that shop! There were so many great used book and record places. Even if it's still a shop, I'd bet that Willis Music, which was my heaven in the 1960s and 1970s and source for many vocal scores and selections, is now a shadow of its glory days.

TOD: I think the Vogue movie theater in Louisville would top my list. I could see any Ingmar Bergman movie playing or perhaps Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse in "The Band Wagon." Even when I watch those on DVD, I'm often transported back to that theater where I first saw them. This is especially true of Bergman's "The Magic Flute," which I would go see on Christmas Day.

BK,

As I may have mentioned the other day, the only scene from IT'S A MAD (4) WORLD that I would have liked to have seen fully restored (not with stills) is the phone call between Spencer Tracy and Buster Keaton.  It explains Keaton's purpose in the picture.

I was in Acres of Books only once, probably not too long before it gave up the ghost.  I'd also been in their other store in Long Beach CA a few times.

Across the street, the Ohio Book Store appears to still be alive and - I hope - well.  http://www.ohiobookstore.net/

WILLIS MUSIC!  Oh, the sadness these memories bring.  I first knew the small shop they had in Cleveland, on the lower level of that incredible old downtown arcade.  It was quite exciting to eventually get to Cincinnati and go into the mother ship.  I remember being so excited to find some original Red Seal Toscanini LPs there one day.

Is that the phone call where Tracy is eating the ice cream?  The specifics escaped me over the years. but I always remembered having seen it, which also indicates we saw the movie within the first four weeks -- at the Sheridan, Miami Beach.

DR Elmore, there is still a Willis Music (http://www.willismusic.com), but most of the stores seem to be in the 'burbs.

In related news, the building housing Hauer Music (http://www.hauermusic.com) in Dayton has been purchased by Dayton Metro Library.  It's an original Miami-Erie Canal building and will be  repurposed for the library's behind-the-scenes operations.

TOD - I mourn the loss of the entire city of Detroit, which was a wonderful place in the '50s and '60s.  Specific places include the downtown J. L. Hudson department store which was imploded in 1998 and the Ford Rotunda which, technically, was in Dearborn.  It had been Ford Motor Company's exhibit space at the 1934 Chicago World's Fair and figures in my earliest memories.  After a remodeling it was opened to the public to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ford on June 16, 1953 - the very day that my family moved to Detroit from Portland, Oregon.  The building was adorned like a cake with 50 huge candles.  From then on, it was a tradition to go there for the Christmas festival, with displays, performances, and, of course, Santa.  The Ford Rotunda burned to the ground on November 9, 1962.

Yes, all of the great downtowns, with all of the things that made them great.  My own Columbus, Fort Lauderdale, and Cleveland.  And though I only passed through it a couple of times, I'll second DR Ginny on Detroit, which had to have been one of the most incredible ones anywhere.

Stupid me! I just put myself in an awkward position by poor typing, thinking in shorthand, and completely mucking up two different issues. I do this too often, and it bothers me that i can be so inept.

DR Ginny, the old Willis building in Cincinnati was a huge shop with a floor of instruments, one of recordings, and one of music. I saw it get smaller and smaller, but these filing cabinets of sheet music were like Monte Cristo's island: a vault where you could find vocal scores and printed songs out of print for years. Each drawer was a mystery, and who knew what treasure from 1910 or 1930 would turn up within a folder. Shopping there was an adventure. I'm sure those contents were dumped years ago.

I had a very strange dream last night. It had several lengthy segments which made sense at the time but don't now.
In any case, in the final segment of the dream, I was seated side by side with Richard Carpenter in the recording studio, and he was teaching me how he picked a song and arranged/produced it into a hit record.

From DR TCB:
Quote
Too many days at sea?  What did you run out of books?  What cruise line?

The Princess Diamond
1/4  Sidney
1/5  At Sea
1/6  Melbourne
1/7  At Sea
1/8  Hobart
1/9  At Sea
1/10 At Sea
1/11 Fiordland National Park
1/12 Dunedin (Port Chambers)
1/13 Akaroa
1/14 At Sea
1/15 Tauranga,
1/16 Auckland

Including cruising the Fjords we were at sea 6 days. Fortunately the Tasmanian sea, notorious for rough seas, was smooth sailing.  It was also the reason I wanted to be on a big ship.  Hobart was worth the extra sea days as it is where we fed and pet the kangaroos, an exceptional lifetime experience for us.  One kangaroo in particular kept nuzzling me so affectionately strangers were photographing us.  We also saw a Tasmanian Devil there, no petting permitted though.

Did we go there together looking for Rodgers and Hart sheet music?

Definitely.

TOD;

I used to go to Woolworth's on my bike with my dog Pixie running beside me.

I would buy a Barbie Outfit for $1.00.  It was so exciting looking at the cases picking out the clothes.

What was supposed to have been less than an inch became about two inches of snow.  This isn't what I had looked forward to for my Saturday, but it had to be cleared or driving on it would be a total mess.  So, I just snowblew.  blowed.  You know.

Cough is getting better, but I think one of the side effects of the codeine is a constant sinus headache which hurts like hell when I do cough.  I'm taking myself off the codeine for a while and see if that's really the case and revert back to Ny/Day Quill

There was no way to last until dinner without eating something, so I had a six-inch Subway Veggie delite - not great, but will tide me over.  In fact, I will be having my first meat since last Saturday this very evening, either a burger or prime rib.  Not ready to chance fish and certainly chicken will not be in the picture for some time to come.

Glad you had a great time, Jane!  When I first read this, I read it as "Hobart was worth the extra sea days as it is where we were fed pet kangaroos...." :o

Very glad to know that I was wrong! ;)

You know we wouldn't eat a kangaroo but sadly we saw them on the menu at many restaurants in Sydney.

We also pet a wombat though I'm not sure how much it appreciated it.  The kangaroo's loved the attention, all but a little shy one.

The two library eBooks I was expecting arrived while we were on the cruise.  I have not been able to read them since neither will load.  Instead I get a message that says "error retrieving EPUB chapter count.  EOCD not found; not a Zip archive? (error code 3006)".

The first book expires on the 28th.  I hope by Monday I will receive a response from the library with an explanation how to fix the problem.  Tomorrow would be even better as I will finish the book I'm reading by then.

When Richard and I got married I moved into the house he already owned.  It had the appliances left by the previous owners.  I was a pretty accomplished cook and was dismayed that I was burning a lot of things in the oven.  We called a repairman who tested the oven and determined the thermostat was shot - whew!  The stove was too old to get replacement parts, so we bought a new one with a built-in microwave.  That was 33 years ago.

Tonight is the SAG awards. We don't get TBS in Canada. But Global is showing it, but only tomorrow night.  I thought that the awards were on tomorrow since i saw them in the tv listings. I guess I will just have to try not to see the winners.

I couldn't understand why there was no E! red carpet. But now when I look in my tv's guide I see they are on today (which makes sense now).

I set my DVR to record this.  It's going to start in about 10 minutes.  I have to get ready now to usher for Turtle Island Quartet with Nellie McKay.  I'll watch them tonight.  Tomorrow, I'm ushering again, so I'd better not get my shirt dirty...I only have one clean white shirt I don't have time to wash another one, or this one again.

Be back later!

DR George, I can't remember if i thanked you for the Kennedy Center Honors! I am a mess these days.

Not a problem, Larry!  You have more than made up for it. :-*

Well, I need to go to bed.  I am ushering again tomorrow for a filmed version of "The Magic Flute."

Good night, all.
