Title: DINNER AND POSTMORTEM
Post by: bk on January 19, 2014, 12:26:17 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of dinner and the postmortem, and now it is time for you to post until the postmortem cows come home.

In the "Leave it to Diva" department  :)  - Milla had to unfortunately bow out of the Midwinter Madness festival in last week of February (I gather shw has a movie in March, not sure how that factored in).  Then, since the director Michael Ormond was really doing the show especially to work with Milla (I knew that factoid, they'd had a great success together on The Crucible at St. Bart's two months ago and were aching to work together again)  - he decided to step aside.

There's a wonderful performer who will likely step in for Milla, but finding a director for the 30-minute piece at such closeness in time has been tough.  (It seems directors book much farther in advance than this.  If anyone here or reading here has any ideas...  or even anyone reading here who would want to talk about maybe doing it, please message me or contact me on the blog.

Here's the info on the show
http://music-and-comedy.blogspot.com/2014/01/info-about-our-one-act-parody-musical.html
(likely rehearsing between Feb. 10 and 24)

Thanks so much, David!

Sorry if I made a passion play of it, I'll go re-word to calm it down - but LOL - more like a pain in the neck, since their names were already in the advertising and that's hard to pull back.   And the change happened just two days after the casting was made public, though it had been in place for a month.  And Milla does seem to have a nice loyal following that we'd aimed toward in publicizing, which would have been more than great with the number of seats to fill (55 seats, 3 perfs)

On the other hand - Much better to know five weeks in advance than closer to the date, of course.

Sunday morning greetings!  By 6:30am, Richard and I were both well on our way to being ready to leave for Lima when he received a text message from the senior warden at church.  Their exchange eventually resulted in cancellation for today, so we're all dressed up with nowhere to go.  Personally, I thought the call should have been made last night...

Good morning, all!  I slept well, except for a very peculiar paranormal experience somewhere in the middle of the night: I awoke and became aware of rustling, shuffling sounds of some sort, and the apartment seemed filled with people, as if I were in the middle of a crowd at a very quiet party. It rattled me, because my first reaction was, I'm dying and my family's come for me; the same things happened in the days before my mother's and father's deaths. My dad reported that the room was filled with angels, and my mother was talking to her dead family members. So, after determining I wasn't dying, I rolled over and went back to sleep.

I need to make a short market run, and then I will spend the day on the choral arrangement, part deux. I think I m now happy with part un.

Well, I finally saw The Book of Mormon.  I'm glad I saw it and I'm also glad I didn't pay full price.  It's very funny but unbelievably crude, as I had heard.  The actors, especially the two leads, were great.  It's not a show I'd want to see again.

I also saw the new musical version of The Bridges of Madison County, which I loved.  Kelli O'Hara was just great as was the rest of the cast.  And I really liked the music.  I think I'll be getting the CD of the cast recording.

Hey, Kevin, glad to hear you finally got to see the show. I'm think I'm with you on this one. I saw it through the lottery just after it opened in 2011. While I think it's very funny and was extremely well done I don't need to see it again and I don't think of it in the pantheon of "great musicals"

Ditto from me! I'm amazed it's done as well as it has. I laughed and was happy it moved so quickly, but it's like the talking turd in SOUTH PARK: it's crude and raunchy, but not particularly something I care about nor wish to see again. I also found the musical arrangements better than the music.

Nice to see we're in agreement, DRs Ben and elmore!

Oh, I almost forgot.  After I won the lottery, the next winners were a family of four.  The two children were approximately 6 and 8. They were so excited to win and I was wondering why the children would be so thrilled since they naturally would not be going to the show.  Well, two hours later when I got to my seat there were the two children, no parents in sight!  I couldn't believe it.  The usher kept coming over and talking to them and mentioned they had seen the show before!!  I was shocked that the parents would let them see the show, not to mention they were by themselves (which I wouldn't do for any show)!  I have to say they were very well behaved.  I suppose some of the language went over their heads but there are also some graphic visuals!!

Wow.  It really is page one.  Or was, by the time I finish this li'l contribution.

One of my garage door openers just broke!  :)

It's a two-car garage, and the side I use all the time has been a little wonky recently, but I guess its twenty years of age is catching up with it.  When I raised it a while ago, it went all the way up, but a wire came off a pulley or the pulley broke off of something or the big spring on one side popped...  or something.  Anyhoo, I closed it manually and it almost came crashing down (I hadn't yet seen that the spring wasn't connected).  So, tomorrow, I call the place down the road and let them fix it, or, worst case, tell me I need a new one.

As we all know, if it isn't one thing, it's another.  Oy!

I'm surprised that there wasn't a) an age restriction and b) a rule that little children cannot be left alone.

Oh, and to make matters even more hilarious...

Before I realized it was really not going to work at all, I went inside and rummaged around for the garage door keys that I hadn't used in just about those twenty years (because the door opener system provides its own locking).  I thought I might be able to use the door manually for a day or two till it's fixed.

Okay, let's cut to the chase here.  I found the keys, had a little trouble inserting one into the lock...and of course nothing will happen.  It turns slightly, but, everything being broken, that does me no good.  The door is too heavy to lift without the spring system working.  And get this:  the key is now stuck in the lock.

Oh, the good times we'll have, looking back and laughing at all of this!

I've been futzing and finessing - I completely rewrote the last of what I'd done last night - the idea was right but not the execution and I'd figured that out at seven in the morning and why I was up and writing those notes down.  But it took a while to get it at least in the ballpark so I could move on to chapter ten, which I finally began and have written a page of.

Did one new page, took a shower, got some good ideas and then did four more pages.  That's it for now.  I'll leave for the theater in about thirty minutes, see the show, then eat something, then come home and relax - I'll definitely write another two or three pages.

We took a nice walk and said hello to the horses and cows along the way.  In one field they each had a patch of hay they were eating from.  A horse decided to share with a cow so the cow decided to go where the horse had been eating.  It sounds boring but it was cute to watch them.

RE: yesterday's memories of Acres of Books.  Sadly, the Acres in Long Beach is also now gone...I think it was dead before I left LA in 2005.  I still get up to Ohio Bookstore every few months or so and what a lifetime of continuity it brings.  The now-owner was working in the shop when I was a young teenager buying books and I believe his right-hand man retired last year or so, but had been working there since he was a teenager when I was a customer back in the day.  The place and set-up still is very similar to when I left.  The only thing that is different is the back room in the basement used to have old records, mostly 78's, and has now become their book bindery. They still sell old Life and Look magazines.  But even as wonderful as it is, it is disheartening to realize it is a dinosaur...I go there and find holes on shelves where I bought stuff years ago andthat have never been restocked.  I tried to sell my parents books there when my mother passed away a few years ago and they don't even buy fiction anymore.  So many downtowns have died off or dwindled, sadly Cincy is no different.  But on Main street, I used to go on book buying sprees to Acres of Books, then down a couple of blocks to Neville's Antiques which used to sell books (and old sheet music), then a few doors down to Neville's was Ohio Bookstore...the only one left standing now.

I just called our new neighbors to thank them for the bottle of wine they left to wish us a happy new year and to let us know they are building a temporary shelter to live in while they build their home.  Amazingly the bottle didn't break since it was outside in the cold until the 17th.

I expect they feel a bit guilty about the location of the temporary shelter as it is outside our fence at the edge of their property line.  Fortunately the house will be much farther away.

Oh my dear Kevin. I am afraid that the language did not go over the children's heads. In fact, I'm pretty sure they could have explained anything you didn't understand.

The children may be able to, but I'm not sure I would!

LOL I can identify with that.

Something has given me a rash. I put some soothing gel on it, but the gel caused my jeans to stick to my skin. Rather funny, I thought. I rinsed off the "soothing" gel and emailed my doctor. I expect it to pass in a few days, but I thought I should update her, anyway.

Last night we watched a Vaseline lotion commercial.  The women sprayed, or something, strips of the lotion down her legs and arms then quickly slipped into her snug clothes.  The ad then said it was fast absorbing.  Watching the commercial it looked to us like she was greasing her body to make it easier to slide the clothes on.

Now I get it, the point was to show her clothes wouldn't stick to her ;)

Vibes the rash is gone by tomorrow.

Well, I finally saw The Book of Mormon.  I'm glad I saw it and I'm also glad I didn't pay full price.  It's very funny but unbelievably crude, as I had heard.  The actors, especially the two leads, were great.  It's not a show I'd want to see again.

I laughed. Twice.

That complete set of Rohmer sounds wonderful. I know someone once said that watching Rohmer was like watching paint dry (I think it was Gene Hackman's character in Night Moves), but I always found his pace perfect, something to luxuriate in.

The St. Paul Winter Carnival is coming soon. Its ethos is very similar to Mardi Gras, although of course the particulars are different. The symbolism is the eventual vanquishing of Winter by Summer. They no longer construct an ice palace (too expensive). But there are parades, pageantry, and celebrations for 10 days. They also bury a medallion somewhere on public land, with a clue each day published in the paper. The finder gets $10,000!

I called the rental place. It was 10 minutes before their closing time. The representative put me on hold until after they had closed, and then left the office.

I had to call a mobile locksmith myself to extricate myself from that situation. The next day, I gave the rental company a piece of my mind.
They ultimately reimbursed me for the locksmith, at least, which they didn't have to do.

Well that was pretty rude of them to put you on hold and then leave.

I did a marathon of Orange is the New Black.   I like it and I don't like it.  A couple of the major story lines are totally different in the book, but you'd have to do that to make it interesting enough for a series. In the book, which is supposedly all true,  Piper's girlfriend/person who snitched her out/  was not at the same prison as Piper even though she is at the same prison in the series.  Obviously that totally changes the dynamic with her fiance

Here's the info on the show
http://music-and-comedy.blogspot.com/2014/01/info-about-our-one-act-parody-musical.html (http://music-and-comedy.blogspot.com/2014/01/info-about-our-one-act-parody-musical.html)
(likely rehearsing between Feb. 10 and 24)

That's too bad, Fred.  Good luck for the show...whoever ends up doing it!

What was also very interesting (at least, for American audiences) was the character of Monostatos, who is a Moor (a black man).  There were a couple of racial stereotypes shown (one was when the students made fun of him by acting like a monkey with a banana) and the actor was not a black man...he was definitely a white guy with make-up on his face and hands.  You'd think that they would've been able to get a black singer for this major production. :-\
