Well, you've read the notes, you don't know what the HELL the tangerine running joke was, and now it is time for you to post until the tangerine cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  cashews, pecans, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts...probably in that order.  Those are pretty much what I can think of.  I'm sure others will post some other favorites that I'll agree with.

Anthony is up and out waiting on line at the Equity office to get an appointment for our taxes to be done by VITA. It's an arduous process (waiting for an appointment, not getting our taxes done). The appointments all go on the first day and then you have to take your chances on a walk-in appointment. I used to do my own taxes but now that we're married we have them done by the trained volunteers at Equity/VITA. We have to file this year for 2013 and re-file federal taxes for 2012 because when we filed last year the Supreme Court ruling had not yet come down recognizing same-sex marriage. We could have re-filed after the ruling but decided to wait until now. It's just a matter of re-filing for both of us, our federal returns listing us as married instead of single.

The weather has begun to change in Manhattan. There is rain, it's supposed to turn to snow and then weather in the 20s. Nothing like the MN/IA weather but still quite a change from the spring-like 55 degrees yesterday.

Larry, I hope your apartment cooled off a little yesterday.

Good morning, all!  DR Ben, last night I slept with two oscillating fans aimed directly at me, and I even opened the window, but it is too damned hot in this apartment. And, because I was uncomfortable, it took me far too png to get to sleep.

It is indeed snowing, and I have so much to accomplish when I leave the apartment: first the bank, maybe Staples as well, physical therapy, the post office, and the pharmacy. After 2:00, Adam Alexander is stopping by to pick up a vocal score for ROBERTA.  I also need to look over my tax notes and clean them up before tomorrow's appointment.

DR Dan M, what an amazing story about your medical diagnoses!  You are very fortunate, but I suspect you already know this. HHW vibes do amazing things for the health system, but they've really failed me on real estate and lottery wins!

Welcome back, DR vixmlm!

Safe travels today for DR Ginny!

Good morning, all.

Oy!  Since going to bed last night, our snow forecast grew from one inch to two-to-four.  Idiots!

Well, I'm prepared enough so I'm working my way from anger to acceptance mode.  It's hardly the end of the world.  The hell with it.

But wait.  What if it IS signaling the end of the world?   Hmmm...

Monday morning greetings!  Thanks for the travel vibes - I'm ready to be home.  This trip has had its share of weirdness, between the weather crisis in Atlanta and the animal crisis here in Carrollton.

Dexter seemed to be resting comfortably in front of the TV when we got to Perry & Pam's for the Super Bowl pre-game.  Shortly after halftime, he became agitated and seemed to be having seizures of some sort.  Richard and I decided to get out of their way about the same time they decided to take Dex Back to the vet.  We all pulled out of the driveway at the same time and they zoomed past us as soon as we turned onto the divided highway.  No word this morning...

And here are my adventures so far this morning:  I walked to my bank on Broadway, and as I was crossing the street, I hit a slick patch and nearly fell. I did my banking and decided to cancel physical therapy, run my errands and get home. I got a nice taxi driver who drove me to the post office and I mailed my letters and packages, came out of the post office and slid and fell into the snow. I got a taxi to the pharmacy and picked up my meds, caught a bus, stopped at the metro station at 72nd Street to refill my Metrocard, and took a taxi to Staples, where I nearly fell again, and we'll see if the ink cartridge is the problem with my printer's color. It was an easy walk home fem there.  The only uncleared sidewalk on Broadway? The Bank of America at 81st and Broadway. I hope someone falls and sues them.

I am all wet but I am home unbroken. I doubt I will be heading out again today.

Glad you're OKAY DR ELMORE!  My sidewalk had a bit of snow on top of what turned out to be a sheet of ice...so I nearly fell on my aspidistra this morning while taking the garbage cans out to the street.

Most of the research I found on the inner web about printers confirmed that the cartridge was usually the culprit, so I am happy it turned out to be so in your case.

NOW...if it is not out of your way....you might try a thrift or Goodwill store for a CD player.  People are getting rid of nice ones for the very reasons that were pointed out here on HHW a couple of days ago:  most music is now downloaded.  I have seen several really nice sets at my local Goodwill store.  Just take a CD (theirs are usually sealed), put the player in your cart and roll to the outlet, plug it in,  and try it out....certainly make sure the power cord is with it.  Sometimes if it isn't, you can find one on another item that fits it....  You might save some $$$$.

Wrote three pages, finished the chapter I was on, and now am beginning the big penultimate chapter of the book.  I've already written some rough things for this chapter all along - just so I wouldn't forget anything.  So, once I begin it should flow easily, at least that's the hope.  This chapter will be a bit longer than any of the others.

Thank you, all. for the concern about my slipping and sliding in this morning's snow. You should all know me well enough after 10 years of griping, boasting, grieving, and laughing with all of you on this site that if I were in pain or really injured myself, I'd make a novel of it.

Hello, all!

I made it to another day off, thankfully. The weather alone here is enough to wear anyone out.

Two more weeks and I'm home.  Missing friends.... and Kritzerland too. It's been a little solitary up north. I'm ready to be done here.

BK, Congrats on the recording. Sorry that all the musicians were not quite on the mark, but I know you'll fix that and it will be wonderful. I look forward to hearing it!

Also, Have a Great Krtizerland show tonight!! Wish I could be there!!

If you are a fan of erotic noirish thrillers (e.g. BODY HEAT), I think you will enjoy my newest release,
THE AMUSEMENT.  It's available in paperback and on Kindle through Amazon and elsewhere.

Here's a look at the trailer:

And, here's the link to the book on Amazon:

Stay home and relax, Larry.  You deserve it.

Keith just asked me who was on the phone a little while ago.  My response was "I don't know, I thought you answered it".  LOL I guess it was a wrong number as they hung up after 1 ring.

Be very cautious on this.  The latest "scam" is called the "one-ring" scam.  Automatic calls are made to dial numbers in the U.S. and hang up after one ring.  A callback number is left on your machine.  Calling these numbers back can be VERY COSTLY....up to $30 just for redialing and up to $9 minute thereafter.

If you don't recognize the number, delete it from your call list.

I never call back numbers if someone calls and hangs up.  If they don't leave a message, I just figure that it's a wrong number and I have no need to confirm that.  Even if I do recognize the number, I don't call back if they don't leave me a message.  If they want me to call back, then they need to let me know that they want me to call them back.  I ain't no mind reader, ya know.

I get the one-rings, the no-messages, the unknown names/numbers, the "toll free" numbers, and now, unfortunately, just to make it really tricky -- "local area code" ones.

The same spammers will go on leaving repeat messages FOR YEARS, and they have no end of numbers to show on your display.  I've learned to recognize a lot of them, and a lot of other suspicious ones that turn out to be more of the same.

If I don't immediately know the number, NOTHING gets answered.  Period.  You can be on all the Do Not Call lists in the world (and I am), but no one's looking out for you.  Just completely ignore these jerks.  Now and forever.

DR Matthew, jUBILEE never got a commercial CD release. There are recordings from the first 1986 production and the 1998 BBC broadcast floating about. Because there's so much music in the score, no one's performed either of the two dances that Porter wrote for the show. I prefer the 1998 broadcast because I loved Vivienne Martin and Denis Quilley as the Queen and the King; the one person I really like from 1986 is Rebecca Luker as the Princess.

You are hereby given notice that you are in breach of your tenancy of the premises you currently occupy.

To remedy the breach you have to quit the premises within the following four weeks.

If you fail to comply you will be physically removed and fined for up to 100 minimum monthly wages.

My sentiments exactly:

Quote
If you have voicemail – as pretty much everyone does today – there is usually no reason to call back missed calls from numbers that you do not recognize, regardless of the area code from which they originated. If a caller has something important to say, he or she can leave a message identifying himself or herself (or send you a text message). Don’t let curiosity get the best of you.

I decided to keep on  and went directly to the tire dept of the local BJ's where I found two very bored young men    I told them about my bald tires and they came out in the elements and agreed - they had the tires I needed in stock  and  while I enjoyed a Keurig Seattle rainforest coffee with hazelnut  creamer and read  a two month out of date entertainment weekly  they set me up with new front tires.

One of the young men told me about a special for $50 off 4 tires.  I asked him what he would recommend to his Mom -- he went out and looked at the rear tires and came back and said "Mom, those will last you a while longer and if you do decide to buy in the next couple of months come to me and I'll give you  the $50 off then"

Nice kid

They also cleaned all the ice and snow off the car completely and cleaned my windows and checked and corrected the tire pressure in the rear tires

I have noticed young men have been much nice to me since I let my hair go grey silver

I tipped them each $10 and they both tried to refuse but I insisted  and they seemed quite happy

I noticed the difference in the way the car was handling immediately I started driving again.

Well worth it!

A story on DANCING WITH THE STARS dropping the large band led by Harold Wheeler, and replacing them with recorded music and a smaller band trying for a younger demographic

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment/blogs/tv-guy/os-dancing-with-the-stars-drops-band-20140203,0,2503778.post

IMHO, not a good move by the producers.

I just got anEviction nticein my email from some law firm Littler.com but I really suspect it's some sort of phishing game. The email says:
You are hereby given notice that you are in breach of your tenancy of the premises you currently occupy.

To remedy the breach you have to quit the premises within the following four weeks.

If you fail to comply you will be physically removed and fined for up to 100 minimum monthly wages.

Detailed information is attached herewith.

Court secretary,
ATKINSON Buchanan

So, the Big Question is, what the fat hell are they phishing for?

If you click on the attachment for details you may unleash something nasty in your computer

Be VERY careful

Exactly. I'm not opening the zip file.

Since I had gotten to the BJ's by 3:15 due to early release I was at home by 4:30 (the BJ's is only about a mile from my home)

Today I had peanuts, pistachios, and toasted almonds.  Other favorites are cashews & macadamia nuts.  Sometimes I eats handfulls of whole almonds.

Because others mention peanuts I have included them though they are not nuts:

"While “nut” is in their name, peanuts are in fact legumes. Peanuts actually grow underground, as opposed to nuts like walnuts, almonds, etc. that grow on trees"

Except for our new DR Dan you all know Brazil & Hazel nuts are not favorites of mine since they make my throat & mouth swell up.

Even if the number is a local area code?

If someone I know hangs up after one ring I still figure it was a wrong number, unless it is Keith calling from his cell phone.

Yes.  There's plenty of local spam and phishing going around now, and those local area code numbers proliferate just as readily as the "long distance" ones.  I don't even think a lot of the "local" ones are, indeed, local.  They just have new ways of looking like a call you should pick up.

She was great in it, even despite the really wretched final season.  Don DeFore was a great foil for Shirley Booth.  I think she is one of the underrated actors/actresses/performers (I believe that covers all of the appellations I can think of).

Vixdad went in to talk to the manager about called AAA but I knew that could take ages -- just then  saw a tall man (I would guess late 30's) coming in to the Cracker Barrel and I stopped  him on the porch

using my best sweet old lady voice I said "Oh young man I wonder if I could impose on you for some help I am afraid we've done a very foolish thing and left our headlights on could you give us a jump?  I have cables..."

AH the joys of the South!

In NY I suspect I would have received a two word response consisting of  7 letters, if I was granted a response at all...

In Savannah I heard "Why ma'am, it would be my pleasure to help y'all"

and he turned right around moved his truck next to mine and minutes later  the van was back in business!

He absolutely refused to take anything from me and told me  "Pay it forward"

I looked around and Vixdad was missing - turns out he was busy buying a Cracker Barrel gift card - he caught  up with our good Samaritan and insisted he take it with our thanks

I'm just getting caught up with 2013 and I recently found "The Tonight Show Vault Series" which I highly recommend.  If you aren't familiar with these DVDs, these are full-length original broadcasts of the Johnny Carson shows with or without the original network commercials.  I have the first 3 volumes and they are a lot of fun.  Sometimes the 1970s commercials are better than the guests!

I've got the program at PEO next meeting.  Anyone have any fun Valentine or Olympic stories I could cover in about 20-30 minutes or so?  We have lots of teachers and the elementary teachers always have us do a project they would do for their kids.  I want to do something above a grade 3 level

Hmm. I'm thinking something about the history of women in the Olympics but that sounds kind of boring

Here's an old joke:
"My uncle has a gold medal for swimming, a silver cup for golfing and a solid gold watch for high jumping."
"Wow, he must be a great athlete!"
"Nah, he owns a pawn shop!"

Thanks, DR ChasSmith!  In addition to the eBook, I also have a dead-tree book and my knitting.

I like to walk and stretch often.  It is boring but at least I'm moving.

At least you can walk!

So since I'm still awake for some reason or other, I'll tell you a bit about my weekend.

I am singing in my DH's Episcopal church choir since moving to the Twin Cities, and they go on an annual retreat to learn music for upcoming services and concerts. We went to the campus of St. John's University, a Catholic institution located in Collegeville, MN, about 1.5 hours north by car. The campus is in a beautifully pristine setting of acres of rolling hills and lakes. There is also a Benedictine Monastery there. So 30 of us repaired north for the weekend.

The Benedictines are noted for their focus on hospitality. We were staying in the Guest House, a facility built within the past five years or so. It is simple but warm and welcoming. We attended meals in the common dining room (the food was again simple but wonderful), attended daily prayer services in the Abbey with the monks, and held 3 two-hour music rehearsals each day. There was socializing in the evenings. The outside temp was -13, but we could travel between the Guest House and the Abbey via an underground tunnel. The services with the monks were pretty spectacular - the Abbey is very contemporary in design, with great acoustics. The monks take their time with things; there are a lot of silent spaces in their worship. But after a time it becomes mesmerizing, and you do find yourself slowing down and becoming more in touch with the 'now.'

In better weather, there is swimming and hiking. The monks have many avenues to pursue vocations, including bread baking and furniture making. The University also commissioned a complete illuminated Bible, probably one of the first scribed on vellum since the Middle Ages. The artwork is contemporary and quite arresting; the whole project is very interesting.

All in all, it was a great escape and a most rewarding few days.

Greetings...

Yes, rumours of my disappearance were greatly exaggerated.

I have had some decent job leads and doing some writing. The writing seems to be a good escape and a good way to get the noisy characters out of my head. Sometimes they are downright NOISY! Men.. they are interesting crittters in a mind of a woman. :::: Shakes head  ::::

I am hoping they pan out. I am thankful for the past year through a program that I was able to get my teeth fixed. It is nice to eat again and not have sinus infections continually. It has been a long  eyar on that journey.

Perhaps Karma does exist. I know some of you are aware of the abuse me and other workers at the library went through. She was fired. The article in the Forum only touched the tip of the iceberg of what went on. Working with this person was like walking through a minefield getting grenades lobbed at you. She forced out through early retirement and intimidation and some instances tortured people mentally, fired, or took away the jobs of 30 people. Some took early retirement because of the abuse. She was a piece of work.

Well, it's time for me to go to the theater.  This is the final tech week for "The House on Pooh Corner."  It was a pretty good run-through yesterday, so it can only get better.  Tonight, we actually have our stage manager (he was not available yesterday)!

Until later!

Breaka leg Vibes for George and Co

Thanks, Vixmom!  Actually, we're going to need it.  Our title character, Pooh (played by Chris), was out sick with a fever.  And the woman who plays Early Rabbit wasn't there for the first act, so it was interesting.  Otherwise, it's all going quite well.

My boss also gave permission for me to send a prepaid FEDEX label to the motel for the return of the cellphone

I faxed it over and "Karla" acknowledged receipt so hopefully the cellphone will be home soon

Great news!
