Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a Valentine to Glazed Nuts, and now it is time for you to post until the glazed cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PLUVIAL!
-
From yesterday:
Just back from a concert by the American Spiritual Ensemble. 20 singers, most of them international opera types. And when they all open up, it is quite a sound!! Two and a half hours of sublime music. Among their number was the Tony-nominated actor who played Crown in the recent Broadway revival of Porgy & Bess.
Almost posted yesterday:
I can't believe that I almost forgot! Last night [now Wednesday], I ushered for "The Ten Tenors" from Australia. For the most part, they had some great voices...a couple were just slightly less than great, but certainly nobody embarrassed themselves. The show was mostly songs from Broadway shows. They sang a Rodgers & Hammerstein/Sound of Music medley, a couple of songs from On the Town "Bui-Doi" from Miss Saigon, "Bring Him Home," an On the Town Medley, songs from West Side Story ("libretto" by Stephen Sondheim!), things like that. It was all put together pretty well. The house was a little more than half filled (a little over 500) and I helped sell merchandise. I bought their 2011 CD, "Double Platinum (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DEVGEM/)," which came with a bonus third disc with four extra tracks, all for only $20! Also, they all came out (not that way) after the show and signed autographs. I actually really enjoyed the concert. A good time was had by all! :D

Today is the birthday of Alexis, the daughter of my friend, Margo. :D

This is not a negative comment on the day, but this is a photo of an actual pee-ball that my cat Ebonie left me on February 13, 2009:

Good morning, all.
I'm celebrating Valentine's Day with a head cold that developed through the day yesterday and made for a tossing and turning night. Finally ended the night in the recliner because my throat was so swollen that I had be sitting up to breathe easily. Just what I needed on a day that I get out there and push the snow blower around.

More importantly, Happy FRIDAY!!!

Good morning, all! I stayed up way too late, and I will leave around 9:30 to visit Joshie at City Center.
When i get home, I will work on my orchestration. I need to finish it tomorrow.
Five years ago today, John McGlinn's body was discovered when the police broke into his apartment. He had died from a heart attack several days earlier, but the actual time of death is unknown. By a lucky coincidence, his sister Lorin, her husband, and son had come to Manhattan from Colorado on vacation and were leaving on the 14th.
The police called several numbers in John's address book, including Russell Warner and Dan Langan, who called me with the news of John's death. I believe it was Dan who connected the police with a cousin of John's and she contacted Lorin in Manhattan. On Saturday afternoon, Lorin identified her brother's body and her husband and son flew back to Colorado. On Sunday evening, I met Lorin, and we both got very drunk reminiscing about John and his horrible treatment of family and friends.
Since then, I doubt there's not a day that passes without my mentioning or thinking of John; I cataloged his estate, and I work in an office surrounded by his scores, books, orchestra parts, and would swear that, when I'm alone, I occasionally hear him walk through another room of the suite, I hear doors open and close, and I yell out, Is that you, John? I hope he never answers.
Still, in the 1980s, working on SHOWBOAT, the Danbury Concert, the Book of the Month Club, dealing with diva Kiri Te Kanawa, and sitting in the Carnegie recital Hall and letting him know when the band was too loud are some of my most cherished memories. Thank you, John!
RIP, my friend and, too much of the time, my enemy. I will listen to one of your CDs today and mourn you.

Re: yesterday's OLYMPICS men's figure skating SHORT PROGRAM
I'm curious what those who watched thought of it? It was definitely shocking when Plushenko withdrew after warm up. I wonder when the deadline would have been to have an alternate skate? I know Plushenko has been in bad shape for days. It doesn't seem right that the 18 year old who won the Russian national championship had to give up his Olympic place to Plushenko (who couldn't skate).
Also US champ Jeremy Abbott, wow. That crash was horrible. But I was so impressed with his comeback. That was amazing. I wonder how they portrayed that on NBC last night.
I am so looking forward to the long program. Fingers crossed for Patrick Chan.
-
Happy Valentine's Day!
-
Valentine's Day greetings! Richard and I had planned a nice date for this afternoon/evening, but we're chickening out because of the snow that's predicted. We were going to go see THE MONUMENTS MEN and then to Bravo for an early dinner. Instead, we're going out to buy the fixings for a nice steak dinner and come home to watch the Olympics.
-
Feel better vibes to DR ChasSmith!
-
DR Jennifer, I had watched the all of the men skaters' short programs on LiveExtra (iPad app) during the day and knew NBC would really milk the Plushenko and Abbott stories, which they did. Jeremy Abbott is not my favorite skater, but I gained a bit of respect for him when he went ahead to finish his program. It seemed to me that NBC cut the length of his "down time" and my husband asked if he was being overly dramatic. Too many men are attempting quads that they don't have, to the detriment of the rest of their skating. Jason Brown is a good example of someone who skates beautifully without the quad. Looking forward to the free programs today!

Jennifer - I didn't think it was bad that Plushenko tried to skate. He was great in the team event and it was his last Olympics. It was in Russia and even if he had been hurting for days, it doesn't mean he couldn't pull it off at the last minute. I don't fault him for that, he's had a fantastic career and if an 18 year old has to wait for the next Olympics, then he has to wait for the next Olympics.
I was impressed that Jeremy got up and finished. I wouldn't have guessed he had that in him. I do agree with Ginny's comments and I love watching Jason Brown. The guy who is in first place....name escapes me....really deserved it, though I thought he was fantastic
-
I was also very happy to see the crowd so appreciative of Jeremy finishing and cheering him on like they did. Maybe I'm a softie, but I thought it was very touching to watch

-
I strongly believe that if you have trained for an event, skate to qualify for that event and then you QUALIFY, then it should be YOU going to the event and not someone who was incapable of qualifying, either from injury or from having a bad day.
Of course, Ashley Wagner could not qualify for the Olympics but, because of her international standing (2nd in the world despite not having won a long program in one year) she took Mirai Nagasu's "earned" spot.
If international competition is the criteria, one has to wonder why Jeremy Abbott was not replaced by Max Aaron, who finished third. Abbott has an ABYSMAL record of winning national titles and then flopping miserably at international events like the Olympics and the World Championships.
That he flopped so miserably in the team competition is completely in character with his record. And that he flopped in the short program is also in keeping. Oh, sure....he'll skate beautifully from here on...now that there is ZERO possibility for him to medal and there is virtually no chance for the U.S. to earn that extra men's position at international competitions.
Next thing you know, we'll be in the same boat as Russia and have only one men's spot.
-
I am struggling.....lots of new pages and ads are coming up...over pages.....and once again words become links....I have checked my programs and extensions, but can't find anything....so today is not a good day.

Lemme tell you, I feel like a glazed nut after the snow and rain dump we got yesterday. A foot of snow followed by rain. Dear Diary... oy!
AND, it was on a two show day. I walked home after the matinee in a whiteout and needed a dogsled to get back. We had maybe 25 people show out of the sold out show, and the evening only 18 plus two staffers.
HOWEVER... there was a silver lining in the evening's performance. By some miracle, Ira Gershwin's nephew Mike, at a very spry 80 years young, made it up to see the show with Arnold Mittleman (sp?), one of the show's promoters. They had met up in NYC, as Mike is in San Fran and Arnold in Miami, and took a bus and a train through the crazy storm. They loved the show and stayed to meet us after. The Gershwin estate, of which Mike is a big part, has adopted this show as one of their own. It will be interesting to see how this pans out, but there are future productions being planned, one perhaps in L.A.
With more snow due tomorrow, I can't wait to get home on Monday! Enough of this wintering:

That thought actually crossed my mind...for just a very fleeting moment. Then reality set in. This kind of litter does not clump very firmly. DR Elmore: What (and when) was the Danbury concert? And the Book of the Month Club?
The Danbury Concert was a Rodgers & Hart, Gershwin concert with Meg Bussert, and a couple of other singers I no longer remember from about 1987; John and I rode to and from Danbury with the bass player whose name i forget, and it was a good concert, and it was one of the few times that I ever saw John relax or put on airs. I think that's the concert for which I orchestrated the verse to "You're Nearer" that ended up on the vonStade recording "My Funny Valentine.
The Book of the Month Club recording "Songs of New York" was my fist union jb and McGlinn's first album where he conducted the whole shebang. He'd conducted a couple of tracks for Ben Bagley's Jerome Kern Revisited.
I moved here in 1989, so at least I didn't miss that concert out of incompetence. But I'm not sure I would have known the name McGlinn in 1987. The SHOW BOAT recording was my introduction to him. When was that released? It was a big damned deal, I remember that much, and I scarfed up that LP box set. Which I think I've kept (must check), even though I also got the CD set some years later.

Oy! DR Jrand63! Not again!
I've got my fix for that kind of nonsense down to a science now. I use Chrome on Win7, and as soon as I discover some bastard extension that won't go away, or price deals, or the random links appearing, I know what to do and I don't waste any time about it.
Uninstall Chrome. Launch IE (which I only use for this; Microsoft must love me) and download/install Chrome, making it the default browser. Sign in with my Google password. Wait a minute for all of my settings to fall into place. At this point only three or four minutes have elapsed, and all that remains is signing back into HHW and a few other sites.
It is the only way to get rid of that CRAP.

It is short for costume play, apparently; essentially dressing up and pretending to be a fictional character. Who knew? :P

Glazed nuts, anyone?

Well, it's a post.

I just learned the term "prog metal" and apparently it's happening to Sweeney Todd:

Might be fun.
Interesting...that's only two and a half hours north of me. Maybe I should take a road trip in the fall. :)

I was thinking a cosplay would be the technical term for those demonstrations that are at Costco, or one written by The Cos.

This is not a negative comment on the day, but this is a photo of an actual pee-ball that my cat Ebonie left me on February 13, 2009:

SBOW BOAT was recorded in 1988 to 1987.
Was it recorded in reverse?
I typed "to" and I meant "or." I don't recall the year of the recording.

Yes, cosplay is the new meme. Seriously, people need to stop.

I can't believe it's been 5 years. I'll listen to something, too. Probably Anything Goes

Dr George..... I've been emptying litter boxes for years and have yet to see a pee heart. You should have tried to sell it on eBay, lol

Remembrances of John McGlinn VIBES for DR Elmore!
Yes, I meant to mention that I really appreciated your notes on John McGlinn today, Elmore. You've written about him before and there seems to be a greater sense of calm in your remembrances of some of the stormier aspects of your relationship -- and it's nice to see that happening.
I was thinking about my comment regarding DR elmore's post and can just ditto this as it expresses my thoughts perfectly.

My friends who live on the Colorado River Indian Tribes reservation have several pecan trees. When they can gather some, they have sent them to me, and I can say that they are the best I've had, but alas not glazed.
Their (2) German shepherds and (1) Basenji-mix have figured out on their very own that the pecans are tasty and good to eat, albeit the dogs eat shell and all. The dogs seem to like the loud crunching noises they make chomping down the pecans. It's pretty funny to see. I will ask my friends to send me some brief video so I can share with you.

I thought they said we got nine inches of snow, but now they're saying we got the most in the state: 15.6 inches. New Canaan came in second at 15.3.
Please send some of that to our poor Mt. Ashland ski area that is going bankrupt.

Received in the mail yesterday.
He signed 4 photos for me. The two that I sent him and 2 of his own choosing! What a nice man!
That was very nice of him. I wish baseball players would do that for Craig when he sends cards to be signed.

DR George, the questionable dates were for SHOW BOAT, not SONGS OF NEW YORK; that was indeed recorded in January 1984. I was writing my charts while i was managing the Minskoff Rehearsal Studios for my friend Diane.
According to the recoding booklet, SHOW BOAT was recorded in June, July, and August 1987. I remember it was very warm when I made the trek to the Warner Brothers warehouse to pick up the three cut numbers found in Secaucus. So, it must have been January or February 1987 when Rbert Kimball and I went to McGlinn's to hear the rough mix.

Aw, shucks! T'weren't nothin'!

Ira Gershwin's nephew Mike, at a very spry 80 years young, made it up to see the show with Arnold Mittleman (sp?), one of the show's promoters.
What a wonderful story.

For tonight's viewing we stopped at Redbox and rented RIDDICK.

Last night we watched the third SHERLOCK episode, The Sign of Three, of the season. It was terrific I had to applaud at the end.

Back from a very good breakfast meeting - about the possibility of bringing Pure Imagination to NY this summer. Fingers crossed.
That would be great!

I'm going to see a production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof roof this eve. My first time viewing this play. I hope it's good. My friend is in it, which is why I'm going. Cuz I think I'd rather stay in tonight.... but I'll go.
-
Time to head for the theater. I'm sure the crowd will be lively...it's a cruizin' Friday night, ya know. :)
Be back later!

I strongly believe that if you have trained for an event, skate to qualify for that event and then you QUALIFY, then it should be YOU going to the event and not someone who was incapable of qualifying, either from injury or from having a bad day.
So are you saying that Pleshenko should not even have had a spot at the Olympics?

It's crazy to see how fast some people drive even with all the snow we had today. Oy!
I hate driving in snow. And am very cautious. But do you need to drive right up behind someone when the conditions are not optimal?
Some roads were cleared quite well. Some less so. I guess it's sort of amazing how fast they can clear the snow. But still I can't believe people drive so fast.
-
We're getting a LOT more snow than they were predicting last night. And there's a possibility that there may be more tomorrow night into Sunday. Do you suppose we'll ever get to Lima again?
-
We got no snow again.

There is a big controversy on the CBC Olympics facebook page.
Today Canada's men's hockey team was playing and they were winning by a lot (i think it was 6-0). The CBC which is the main channel was showing the entire game. A sister station (which not everybody gets) was showing figure skating in its entirety.
Patrick Chan was going for a gold medal in figure skating (Canada has never won a gold in men's figure skating).
So what should CBC do? Show Chan skate? Or keep with the hockey?
I understand that hockey is very important here. But this was a meaningless game that Team Canada was winning. Patrick Chan was skating for a gold medal. I honestly do not see the POV of hockey fans at all. Even if they could care less about figure skating. It makes no sense to me why CBC would not cut away for 5 minutes. There are so many sports. I feel like it's crazy enough to devote 3 hours to games (i feel like all games should be on sister stations).
Anyhow what they ended up doing was a split screen. But no sound on Patrick Chan. So the skating fans were outraged that the CBC did not respect one of our most prestigious athletes. But the hockey fans were going ballistic that their game was put on split screen. So they ended up making everyone mad. I agree they should have either kept the hockey or cut to Chan not split screen. But I am floored at the reaction of the hockey fans.
I was talking about this with my brother-in-law and he could not believe that they would have cut into the hockey game. But then when i mentioned it to my sister she could not believe that they did not show Patrick Chan.
-
That is kind of funny. Of course I agree they could have cut the hockey game for 5 minutes and re-played any exciting action that was missed.

There are no spoilers in my post. I know the US hasn't aired the figure skating yet. No results are mentioned.
Unless you care about a mid-game score of the Canadian men's hockey team. But i figured NBC would not be showing that for sure.

DR Cillaliz, I saw the entire men's event today and there are no spoilers in DR Jennifer's post.

Finally found the time to put a big pot of borscht on the stove. Love this soup, probably speaks to that quarter Russian in me.
But it's a funny soup. Every time I've tried a Russian recipe, the emphasis is on the beef broth. American versions seem to be about the beets. I guess it was meant as a way of getting beef, or beef flavor, at least, into one more peasant meal. I love a strong beefy flavor.
Going to let it set overnight before eating it.

Have I mentioned how much I love, love, love the blue patchwork "wallpaper" on the boards and in the kiss & cry at the Iceberg?

HOWEVER... there was a silver lining in the evening's performance.
What a lovely story.

I don't know from glazed nuts, but I've met a few DAZED nuts over the years.

Good night.

I agree, a lovely story. Isn't it great that there still is a living link back to the great Gershwins! For me, these kinds of stories serve as a reminder that even though icons of the storied past (and prsent) are often-times larger than life, they were (and are) real people, etc. F'rinstance, a very good friend of mine now approaching her 80s once dated Richard Rodgers.

Happy Valentine's Day, All!!

With more snow due tomorrow, I can't wait to get home on Monday! Enough of this wintering:

And, I can't wait to hear about my songs for the upcoming Kritzerland show. (I keep praying for some Sweeney) :D
Okay, off to frozen errands and another show. Happy Heart Day to all!!
Interesting, the wolf in your graphic reminds of the wolf in this video clip sans the snow. They look almost alike.

Stay safe and all the best with your show!

Increasingly, I am encountering the word "cosplay" on the Interwebs. I really hadn't a clue, so I just looked it up.
It is short for costume play, apparently; essentially dressing up and pretending to be a fictional character. Who knew? :P
Costumed role playing...

Crosses fingers for bk!

Feel better vibes for Chas..

Prog-metal I have no idea... cosplay I am very familiar with the Vixter and her friends and my nieces are all cosplayers

I just learned the term "prog metal" and apparently it's happening to Sweeney Todd:

Might be fun.
Interesting...that's only two and a half hours north of me. Maybe I should take a road trip in the fall. :)
George, what are you talking about? It is on the other side of the country.
-
The theater asked me (not hired me) to create and direct a musical revue. I did and I own it all. If any major productions occur, they will receive a very small percent.
-
Had a call from Brennley Brown's folks - they were in the nabe and asked me to come join them for a meal, which I did. I hadn't intended to really eat again, but I had a meatless cobb salad and some chili and that was that. I'm jogging tomorrow, believe me.

From DR TCB:
It would be one of the poker players, whichever the director happens to see me. I am just not sure I want to do another show.
Your last show seemed like a perfect one to end your career, if that is what you decide to do.
It was, but I hope he doesn't. :-\
Thank you, George, that is a very nice thing to say.

Since my Valentine was a no-show and I'm feeling down about it, I'm watching "Love, American Style" on MeTV with Karen VALENTINE!
(Reading this back to myself, I sound like a sad case, oh well).
I am sorry your date was a no-show.
