Title: THIRTEEN
Post by: bk on February 15, 2014, 12:17:47 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of thirteen (Jason Robert Brown will probably Google himself and think I was talking about his show), and now it is time for you to post until the thirteen cows come home - and I have to tell you, if an thirteen-year-old cow were having sexual relations it would be an outcowst.

When I was younger, I loved Frank Capra's "The Name Above the Title" and the series of memoirs from Maya Angelou that started with "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."

In recent years, I enjoyed Zora Neale Hurston's "Dust Tracks on the Road," "Before the Parade Passes By: Gower Champion and the Glorious American Musical" by John Anthony Gilvey, Larry McMurtry's three volumes of memoirs ("Books," "Literary Life," "Hollywood"), Elmer Kelton's "Sandhills Boy," and "An Autobiography" by Anthony Trollope.

I'm enjoying the new Fosse bio right now.

I've read 14 (some short). I haven't been reading as much because of the Olympics.  Plus the book I want to read is still in verification at the library. Usually verification just takes a few hours. 3. Patrick McGilligan's Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light
4. Simon Callow's Orson Welles, Vol. 1: The Road to Xanadu
5. Frank Jacobs's The MAD World of William M. Gaines
6. Shelley: Also Known as Shirley by Shelley Winters (natch)
7. Lillian Hellman's Scoundrel Time (relates to BK's note re blacklist era)
8. A Talent to Amuse: A Biography of Noel Coward by Sheridan Morley
9. Jack Benny by Irving A. Fein
10. Chuck Amuck: The Life and Times of an Animated Cartoonist by Chuck Jones
11. Groucho: The Life and Times of Julius Henry Marx by Stefan Kanfer
12. Darden Asbury Pyron's Liberace: An American Boy
13. Eugene B. Bergmann's Excelsior, You Fathead!: The Art and Enigma of Jean Shepherd
14. Backstage with Julia: My Years with Julia Child by Nancy Verde Barr
15. Ralph Rosenblum's When The Shooting Stops ... The Cutting Begins: A Film Editor's Story

Okay, that's enough for now.  If I think of others, I'll post them. :)

I read an interesting article in this month's SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN about how things we think of as unlikely, like winning the lottery, aren't really so unlikely after all. It's written by a mathematician, but it's easy enough to skip over the math if you prefer.

Good morning, all! I slept late and this morning I had a lot of emails concerning the ROBERTA recording sessions to deal with.  I took a vocal score to Encores! last week for our rehearsal pianist, who wasn't there, and this morning - the day before our first rehearsal -  he asked about his score and what we're rehearsing tomorrow. Oy!

DR TCB, I like your new avatar, and I don't want you retiring from acting.  There. I've said it. I cannot force you, cajole you, or bribe you, nor do I wish to.  I simply think it would be a loss to you and the community.  You're too young to retire.

The best biography i've read lately is Paul Kildea's Benjamin Britten: A Life In The Twentieth Century. I like biography, autobiographies not so much, particularly the me-me-me self-serving ones. Some of the other ones that I liked very much:
Charmed Circle: Gertrude stein & Company (Mellow)
Jane Austen: A Life (Tomalin)
Act One (Hart)
George Gershwin: His Life and Work (Pollack)
Secret Muses: The Life of Frederick Ashton (Kavanaugh)
Marie Antoinette:The Journey (Fraser)

Thank you, DR elmore, for the comments about my retiring.  It would probably be easier to give up breathing.

TCB,  Elmore wrote this better than I could hope to -  even if this is not a production you  are interested in being part of I hope you will reconsider any thoughts of retiring from the stage

Just found out that a friend of mine from college days, Angelo Henderson, who went on to win a Pulitzer Prize and became a well-known radio personality in Detroit, has died. No details on cause of death. Nothing.

Had seen Angelo since I graduated back in 1983. But I followed his career.

That's sad. He was young.

That also means when I was bullying you about the Pulitzer in 1985, you were just a baby!

And after 29 years, I'm still irked at those broads for calling the Journal about it!

Biographies & Autobiographies aren't my favorites though I have read a good many.  There are a  number of books by Holocaust survivors I've enjoyed though the names of those eludes me at the moment.

A few of my favorites are:
Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt
Growing Up by Russell Baker
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom
I know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
Torvill & Dean" The Autobiography of Ice Dancing's Greatest Stars by Jayne Torvill, John Man

Both shows went quite well.  The second show, actually was a bought house.  A local private (I think) elementary school bought the house and sold the tickets to their own students and their parents.  It was more than half-full.  We were told that they actually bought houses for two of Olympia Family Theater's shows this season.  They make enough money to make it worth it.  Good for them!

Ms. Chenoweth puts on a great show. She was onstage for about 1:45, and it felt like a really full evening.

Rob Fisher was her musical director and he was in charge of a 12-piece band with some local players. Interesting that he had an overture with snippets from "Say a Little Prayer for Me" and "Glitter and Be Gay," neither of which she sang.

Musical highlights were "All the Things You Are" (she said Kern was her favorite composer), "Bring Him Home" and Madeline Kahn's "I'm Tired" number from "Blazing Saddles."

She also did the bit where she brought up someone from the audience to duet with her on "For Good." And, yes, the 20-year-old was really good.
