Well, you've read the notes, the notes marched in like a lion, and now it is time for you to post until the lionized cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: DEIPNOSOPHIST!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
-
Yesterday, I wrote:
Well, it's time for me to head out. My sister had me order a couple of flat-iron hair flatteners for her and they arrived today. I'll bring them over and visit for a bit. I have some TV watching to do when I get home...and probably some laundry. I'm working concessions again tomorrow evening.
Be back later!
And Jane asked:
Why does she need more than one? :)
And today, I'm answering:
One is for my sister, and the other is for her daughter. After I gave them the hair-irons, I stayed for a while and we chatted and watched a bit of TV. I just realized that she didn't pay me for them...I'll have to go back.
-
Today after waking up, showering and getting dressed, I was just going to work concessions for The Olympia Dance Festival, but my mom called yesterday and asked if I would come over and help move an overstuffed couch and two overstuffed chairs. They're my parents' couch and chairs, but my mom sold them to someone from North Bend...which is at least an hour and a half away. So, I'll go over there around 1:00 and wait until the people who bought the couch and chairs come over, then help them (if necessary) to get the items into whatever vehicle they drove. My mom said she'd make me something to eat (always nice) and we'll probably have more than enough time to play Phase 10 before I have to leave for the theater.
-
That's a great book cover, BK! Very nice font.
-
And now...to bed. 8)

Nice DR FJL....and nice review posted yesterday.
Congrats to MR BK and Sandy on their MAC nomination for the CD.
-
Well today is a work day. Oh well.
And the storm that DR CILLA LIZ was talking about yesterday is supposed to be in my area late this evening....hopefully AFTER I return from work. We shall see.
-
Good morning, all.
Good sleep. Coffee. Banana. Nice day. Our part of the storm doesn't get here till tomorrow night, so we're in the clear for most of the weekend. And that's the news.
-
The book cover is just perfect. Can't imagine better.
Count me in for a limited edition tipped-in signature page! What a great idea.

I believe I've never even seen ten minutes of 55 DAYS AT PEKING. I shall look forward to that one of these days.
-
Good morning, all! I am waiting to hear from my college friend David James of Hinkley, Ohio, who now lives in London. He's in town for some choreographers/dancer event, I believe, and we shall have coffee and gossip this morning.
And that's my only commitment for the weekend.

TOD:
Although I wrote a book many years ago about Charlton Heston (for the Pyramid History of Movies collection). I've never really been a fan. Yes, he was a major star, but (in my opinion) only because he was lucky enough to star in many hugely successful movies (e.g. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, BEN-HUR, PLANET OF THE APES) that would have been hugely successful with or without his presence. The films he made that depended on his star stature alone to draw in audiences, for the most part bombed.
That said, my favorite Heston movies are:
TOUCH OF EVIL
THE BIG COUNTRY
55 DAYS AT PEKING
EL CID
WILL PENNY
-
I finally watched GRAVITY last night.
My hunch is that it will win the Best Picture Oscar tomorrow night.
-
Terrific book cover, BK!
-
Tonight, we will watch NEBRASKA.

Terrific book cover, BK!
Totally agree!
-
Good morning, all.
Great news on Time and Again, Fjl.
Great cover, BK.

Update: we have decided to put my father into palliative care. They cannot give a timeframe. I will stay for a few more days. Go home and return when the time to say our final goodbyes draws closer. I do not think I'll be around tomorrow to join in the festivities. Thank you.
-
~ ~ ~ CONTINUED VIBES ~ ~ ~ for DR Mike and family as you go through this difficult journey with your father.
-
I just love, love, love the cover for bk's new book. It's so evocative, and I especially love the "halo" of light around the figure of the boy.
-
Wonderful professional news for both DR FJL and his ever-lovin' Skip. Congratulations!!
-
Congratulations also to bk and The East Coast Singer on their MAC nomination!

Yesterday, I had my follow up with the oral surgeon. He thinks everything is healing up nicely, although everything is still quite tender, and the sutures are sharp and cut my tongue every time I try to eat. :P
-
Last night, I saw the film West Side Story, accompanied live by the Minnesota Orchestra. It was quite something, and thoroughly enjoyable. They've processed the soundtrack to retain everything EXCEPT the music cues, which are supplied by the live orchestra. The conductor and the concertmaster wear an earphone which supplies a click track, and the conductor also has a screen with various colored bars sliding across, as well as a downbeat indicator. Somehow, it all stays together. And this is wonderfully symphonic music which benefits from the treatment. I think they've slightly adjusted the orchestrations, as the film version had a colossal number of musicians, which isn't practical for a contemporary symphony orchestra. In any case, the live sound waves in the hall were wonderfully thrilling, and beat out a pre-recorded soundtrack any day. The whole program was well-received by an enthusiastic full house.

Saturday morning greetings! We are looking forward to this afternoon's matinee performance of EVITA followed by dinner with E & T DR Jason. Rob and Mary Linda suggested that we sup at Rock Bottom Brewery (http://www.rockbottom.com/locations/cincinnati?action=view), which should be fun and very convenient for Jason. We'll be home before the winter weather advisory takes effect...

Vibes & prayers for the family of DR Mike.

Yesterday's projects continue. I've got all the components repositioned, cleaned up, cables untangled and reconnected, and the room already feels so much better. After this here little break I'll test everything to make sure I've got it all back together properly. This was long overdue.
I even oiled the furniture -- a wonderful solid oak component rack bought at Rogersound Labs in 1982 -- which was even longer overdue. It's as beautiful as ever, and I also have a unique solid oak TV stand that held my "good" 25-inch "monitor" for over two decades and is still a great base for the flat-screen TV. Always loved the look of these and other oak pieces. Perhaps some photographic evidence is in order.
I loved Rogersound for the unique store-designed/branded items they carried, and for their "affordable mid-high end" philosophy in the electronics they carried. At least that's how I perceived it then. They were also a little like the original Trader Joe's in how they'd acquire a quantity of some good but discontinued item from a manufacturer and offer it at bargain prices. That's how I got my first ever CD player in 1984 and first laserdisc player (a Luxman-branded Pioneer) in 1987. They also carried their own line of speakers which seemed to have a great reputation for some years, but I never got any. Ah, memories.
Edit: Rogersound Labs was a Southern California chain with probably no more than a dozen stores. They were big in the '70s and '80s, and the last time I was in a store a little after that, they had lost much of what set them apart, and I think shortly thereafter went out of business. I don't know what BK and others might have thought of them, but they were very good for me.
-
Happy Saturday, all!
First and foremost: BK, the book cover is gorgeous!! Bravo to you and the artist!
I was in an escapist mood last night, and made the mistake of watching "Thor: The Dark World. Zzzzzz. Put me right to sleep. Maybe it was just the mood I was in, but I thought, this is the "let's make a mediocre sequel so people don't forget the character" movie. Sheesh. I really have to stop watching that crap. ::)
The first Heston movie that comes to mind is the original "Planet of the Apes". And the image I always remember is he and the girl on horseback, riding down the beach and finding the half-buried Statue of Liberty in the sand, as he realizes just what happened and where he is.
-
TOD
As DR Druxy indicated, Charlton Heston is an odd one. in that I can always like him in any movie I'm watching, but he has in no way ever been a favorite actor. I probably enjoy his "sci-fi/fantasy" films of the '60s and '70s as much as anything, as well as Touch of Evil (in spite of the odd casting). And of course I enjoy the epics (Ben-Hur, etc.) when in the mood, for all the spectacle and other reasons, but for me the draw isn't Heston himself. I haven't yet watched the Khartoum disc, and I never saw Peking, so I look forward to experiencing both.
-
I was thinking about how I said I used to love driving around L.A. on rainy days (I don't mean torrential ones), and trying to juxtapose that with how I like driving around anywhere in rain now.....which is to say, I don't! :)
The worst thing -- no, there are two worst things: One is driving in New York City on a rainy day. Just forget it. If traffic isn't bad enough on clear days (and of course many times traffic isn't an issue at all), it's a freaking disaster when it's raining. Everything comes to a standstill, and I have spent long hours starving, or having to pee, or whatever, stuck in rainy NYC traffic. Nothing is more endless or more miserable. The other thing is actual traveling, being on the road, and that includes even a one-hour trip such as from NYC to where I live. Light and intermittent rains are irritating, and heavy ones are just mind-blowingly bad. They're actually fatiguing. And I say that as a person who loves driving, both short distances and long. I guess my youthful days of rainy-day joie de vivre are behind me!
-
Okay, enough chatter from me for a while. Back to work I hereby yield the floor.

My friend David just headed off to the matinee of ROCKY and we had a lovely 2-hour visit before that. He's stopped in Manhattan on his way to Kentucky on a TV series research project.
He was my best friend in the Miami University Theatre Dept., and when he graduated in 1968, he headed to Manhattan where he worked as costumer Jane Greenwood's assistant at Stratford, CT Shakespeare Festival, and on the Broadway musical 70 Girls 70, assisted Ray Diffin on The Rothschilds, assisted Carrie Robbins on the original production of Grease, and designed the original production of Vanities as well as several Joffrey ballets. When I spent a week in NYC after a summer working for the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, I crashed at David's. When I moved here in 1979, he was managing the Murder Ink bookstore, then moved to London to manage the one there. He's always on the move looking for new things to accomplish. Now h's writing a tv series.

I went to the mall today with my nieces. There is a lego store opening in a couple of months and Disney had a huge playstation set up in the middle of the mall. Hundreds of kids were playing lego and my nieces did not move for almost an hour. Then they rode the escalators up and down probably 10-20 times. Who knew it was so fun to ride.

Every component is working perfectly (I know everyone has been waiting breathlessly for this news!!) -- even though I had to call the damned cable company and go through menu hell and wait on hold for ten minutes because today, for some reason, my cable box decided that I wasn't authorized to watch anything. Fortunately, if their sending a signal hadn't been able to rejuvenate it, I could have gone to their new store (which is now in a shopping center and is actually open on weekends, if you can believe that) and exchanged the box. Because, believe you me, I wouldn't have wanted to watch the Oscars on anything less than the best screen. That would have been torture. I'll keep testing it tomorrow so I can make a run to the store if I have to. Lordy, the things we go through.

Continued empathy VIBES for DR Mike, his dad and all his family at this time. As rough a time as it was for me, I was there for my mom as she passed and I know that it made a difference for her. TOD:
I agree with what other dear readers have written about C. Heston. (TO DR Druxy: I have some of the Pyramid books series, but not the one you mentioned unfortunately.)
For me, Mr. Heston had a booming voice and looked important, but was not a subtle actor. When I was younger I liked him a lot more than I do now. I think his skill was in conveying the idea of someone in charge. To wit, one of his earliest roles was the circus manager in "The Greatest Show on Earth" and which was duplicated time and again in his lead parts. I remember reading that one of his female co-stars (sorry, I forgot who, but she paraphrased Dorothy Parker) said that he had a range from A to B. Back in the 1980s, a friend of mine who lived in the Middle East at the time "The Awakening" was being made, met Heston and found him to be a stuffed shirt.
As far as his movies go, I will second what others have said. I believe Heston was the perfect choice for the 1968 "Planet of the Apes" because I have the feeling that he wasn't acting, but actually playing himself. But there was far too much of his bare skin for my taste as I don't think he was ever that attractive, so I would have to side with Dr. Zira that he was "damned ugly".
I also think he was cast in "Touch of Evil" to play someone not unlike himself in temperament and self-importance. My hunch is that Orson Welles would have been very amused by that as it would have been a very in-joke, as Heston would have been the most limited actor of the cast. Dennis Weaver's few moments as the motel manager runs rings around ol' Chuck. Sorry for my diatribe and thanks for reading.

DR Dan you were fortunate you could be there for your mother, not everyone can do that.
Thank you DR Jane!

It's another attempt at marketing I fear. Probably someone thought it would be "hip" and maybe, just maybe, another Miley Cyrus moment could be at hand. But, just so it didn't look like such a crass attempt at getting the pre-teen and knuckle-dragger audiences, they didn't get Miley Cyrus, since P!nk is such a class act. ;)

Very proud of you both!

Why is Pink performing at the Oscars? The only connection I can think of is that she may have watched a movie.
:)
What is she singing? The song from Her? The Moon Song? On Youtube someone named Karen O sang it
-
Elmore, so happy all your recording went so well! Congratulations, my friend!
-
I would like to thank the inventor of snow blowers.
-
I am guessing that a "tipped in" signature page is an extra page added in in the front of the book
In any event, please put me on the list of people who want one
-
I was flipping channels like crazy just before 8 PM trying to find the Oscars ... then I remembered it is Saturday today not sure why I suddenly thought it was Sunday

I would like to thank the inventor of snow blowers.
you're welcome

There. That's 9.
-
Apologies to the scrolling fingers of all DRs.
-
;D
-
Nice work SingSong!
-
How is your mouth healing ? Are you able to sing tomorrow?
-
Thanks, DR Vixmom (and DR Dan M) - it is still quite sore and I am still taking an over-the-counter remedy. Each day is a little better, I guess.
The doctor said not to be surprised if fragments of bone continue to push their way through over the next few months. (Ick!)
Hope you continue to recuperate from your own encounter with the dentist!
-
As far as singing tomorrow morning, I think it will be fine. I got through rehearsal Wednesday night, although I was quite sore by the end of the evening.
-
CNN Films AND THE OSCAR GOES TO is pretty interesting
-
Glad you are healing well Dr Singdaw

I agree. I had remembered some of these "moments," but plenty I had not seen before.
-
Thanks, DR Cillaliz!
-
The snow you got today missed us, somehow.
-
But I agree - where would we be without snowblowers?

I had a similar experience with fragments when I had to have a tooth extracted. I don't think the technology for extractions has improved or changed from the days of the barber/dentist (before there was anything legitimately known as dentistry and barbers performed "dentistry").
-
Good night, all!
-
Good night Elmore

The bone working it's way out reminds me of the glass in my arm after my car accident. The last little piece worked it's way out about 8 months after the accident

;D
It's another attempt at marketing I fear. Probably someone thought it would be "hip" and maybe, just maybe, another Miley Cyrus moment could be at hand. But, just so it didn't look like such a crass attempt at getting the pre-teen and knuckle-dragger audiences, they didn't get Miley Cyrus, since P!nk is such a class act. ;)
I am very fond of PInk. I have seen her interviewed on the "Ellen Show" and she is quite charming and articulate. I just wonder why a program that always runs overtime would want to pad their time with non-movie entertainers.
-
Perhaps she is singing over the In Memoriam segment?

HMmm then I don't know
-
Come on everyone, we are closing in on Page Six!
-
Ok....so let's get there
-
I am getting sleepy
-
It's 0 degrees outside. So there are no degrees at all
-
Hey, it's a post
-
I practiced my flute tonight
-
I"m playing the first part instead of second at this concert. I can play all the notes.....it's about time I got back to playing almost as well as I used to
-
And Idina Menzel has FROZEN covered.
-
SO here's page 6.....welcome, come on in and post a few
-
is Pharrel Williams singing Happy? I love that song. I realize it only has about 4 lines in it and isn't a great song, but it makes me smile and want to dance

I don't recall that name as being listed. But maybe.

Hmmm, so the hoilter monitor I had to wear is not covered by my insurance. So I'm paying for it, it was about a month ago and I still haven't had anyone tell me the results. I'm about ready to quit going to the doctor altogether.

How much snow do you have now, Cilla?
-
Home from the show - good audience, good show, ailing cast members - everyone but Sami seems to have a cold, but they sang through it just fine. Sami, on her way up to get her hat and cane for Where Would You Be Without Me, took a fall, but she recovered quickly like the pro she is.
-
At the end of the show they brought me up on stage, which was very sweet. It was the final show I'll be seeing and Lloyd Cooper's final show - one wishes they'd just closed it tonight, but they have a sold out matinee tomorrow.

It sounds like it was a good show to see for the last time.
-
I finally watched GUILT TRIP tonight. A charming movie.
-
G'night!
-
We did have us a frenzy or nine, didn't we.
-
It was raining on the way to the theater, but dry coming home.

I got to my parents' house (actually at about 2:00) and my mom made some pretty darned good spaghetti (which I just realized is still in the trunk of my car!) and we played Phase 10 (my dad won) while waiting for the buyer of my parents' couch and chairs. The woman's brother and I were able to move the couch and chairs fairly easily out of the house and into the moving van that they were driving. They left, we then finished the game of Phase 10 and I went to the theater.
-
Tonight, I ushered for The Olympia Dance Festival at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. It featured a bunch of different dance companies showing off. ;) What was really cool was one of the choreographers was my friend Alice! I hadn't seen her in a couple of years, so we got to chat for a bit out in the lobby. After the show, I got something to eat and now I'm at home for the duration.
-
Tomorrow, I have no plans except to sleep in, watch some TV, do a little laundry and not leave my house. ;D
-
I believe I've never even seen ten minutes of 55 DAYS AT PEKING. I shall look forward to that one of these days.
This was on TCM a few months ago and recorded it for my dad.
Just had to share. :)
-
Update: we have decided to put my father into palliative care. They cannot give a timeframe. I will stay for a few more days. Go home and return when the time to say our final goodbyes draws closer. I do not think I'll be around tomorrow to join in the festivities. Thank you.

Yesterday, I had my follow up with the oral surgeon. He thinks everything is healing up nicely, although everything is still quite tender, and the sutures are sharp and cut my tongue every time I try to eat. :P

Sounds like it was a lot of fun.

I just watched "Late Night with Seth Meyers" (he took over for Jimmy Fallon when Fallon went to "The Tonight Show") and I like Seth Meyers, but it really feels like they use a laugh track. What's that all about? :-\

Oh...and watch the Oscars! How could I forget that?? :o
-
I'm watching "Glee." It's been a while since it's been on.
-
I can only assume that what they show as a "Broadway" audition is not at all how it works.
-
Well, since we're so close...

What's really cool about this picture is the guy playing electric guitar on the far right (or is a bass?), is Derek Nelson. He's been on the show for a couple of years as an instrumental player and he's from Olympia! He was "Kids At Play" kid ("Kids At Play" was a summer theater program for kids) and we got to know each other a little bit over the years.
-
He really plays multiple instruments and writes some pretty good songs.
