Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Kritzerland 43, and now it is time for you to post until the 43 cows come home.

Good morning to all.

Another busy day as we prepare to say goodbye to my father.

TOD:

I remember watching a lot of television at the time of Princess Diana's death. Not that it was an impactful news story like what's going on in the Ukraine right now,, but I was surprised at how much it affected me.

More recently, of course, the events of 9/11 consumed me in print reports and television. Now, I try to avoid video replays on the anniversaries, because they give me nightmares.

Interestingly enough, my two nephews were staying with us at the time all that happened, so we were trying to keep things light and normal around them so they wouldn't worry.  I ended up only getting bits and pieces as I tried to find what was happening and ended up really missing all of that.

Awakened early by feline shenanigans, I am now enjoying coffee in the recliner.

Let me clarify.  The coffee is in a cup.  I am in the recliner.

Good morning, all! Last night i couldn't get to sleep at all. Welcome to the Fifth Dimension!  I was wide awake at 3am, wondering why I was exhausted but could not sleep. So, i finally did and i had weird dreams about working at Barnes & Noble, or maybe the Drama Book Shop, or Theatre Books, or Theatre Arts Books, with Noah Wylie - I think that's who was knocking over the book carts - and ne with a couple of talking cats. It's good to be on my second cup of coffee and awake.

BK, I'm happy the show went well. Josh Grisetti? Terri White? Two friends I haven't seen in ages. BK, Josh auditioned for Rod in 2007 for "The Brain From Planet X"; I brought him in. He'd just had an operation and could do no lifting. I've known Terri since she was in "Barnum"; one of my best friends from college was Glen Close's dresser, and I had a couple of friends in the cast.

I'm off to market and the bank. I think I will spend the day making vegetable beef soup. Peeling potatoes and carrots is great manual therapy.

The reviews for DEAREST ENEMY yesterday have me pondering the nature of reviewers; some of the ones working as music critics seem qualified as theatre critics and completely untutored or tone-deaf as a music critic. The American Record Guide reviewer, who would be writing with a copy of the CD close to hand, refers constantly to "Kim Cresswell," one reviewer referred to the primary romantic couple as Rachel Kelly and Hal Cazelet when they are the secondary couple. The critic for Playbill.com is more busy knocking the recording for not measuring up to his concept of Rodgers & Hart (the big hits from 1938 to 1941) and writing about himself. He's completely unable to put a show from 1925 into its context with Victor Herbert, Rudolf Friml, Jerome Kern, or Sigmund Romberg.

TOD:

I couldn't have asked for a better "invitation" to introduce my new 3 character stage play than BK's question today.

When I was 10 years old, my parents brought me on vacation to Hollywood (from Seattle) and while I was there, I vividly recall seeing the newspaper headlines about this event.  Years later, although I never actually met her, one of the principals was a neighbor in my apartment building.

I've been playing around with this story for 30+ years.

B MOVIE is my two-act stage play that dramatizes one of Hollywood's most sordid scandals.

Please take a look at the trailer:

On the CNN documentary "and the Oscar goes to..." the other night, they showed the most delightful clip of presenter Glynis Johns reading an acceptance speech from an absent actor. It was hilarious!
Does anyone know/can anyone remember what year/what actor? I've searched online for the clip and cannot find it.

It will be better tomorrow. I'll begin with one pan for the stock and to cook the meat, and finish with maybe four large pans of soup; I'll freeze a lot of it.

Homemade trumps Campbell any time.

As expected, Saturday's late show was well-attended, even more than the opening performance.  But Sunday's 7 pm (on Oscar night) was a small audience mainly of friends and family of all involved, and some of the people from the other shows in the festival came as guests.  But a festival very-high-up who was in that small Sunday-night audience liked it a lot, enough to suggest to us that he'd like to try to arrange to reprise it this summer and adding to it, to make for a longer event.

TOD:

I remember reading in the newspaper (when I was 7 or 8 ) about the death of Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, and I read the news story/obituary several times.

The central event of my life of which I could not get enough information was the assassination of John F. Kennedy and all the aftermath, including the findings of the Warren Commission.

This report, and the event it pretends to encompass, haunts me to this very day.

I have to give them the benefit of the doubt on most of the names folks have mentioned the past two days.  Most made their mark in TV...not movies.  And even those who were in the movies made a more significant contribution (the qualifying element) in television.

Just sayin'.

TOD:

I worked in Lower Manhattan and was there on 9/11/01, so that would qualify.  However, after that first week, I could not watch any TV programs or movies with that event as its theme.  Likewise, I could not ever visit the crater and could not understand the out-of-towners who visited the site as soon as they were able right after the tragedy occurred.  I didn't like the fact that we were permitted to return to work way too soon, while the air was still pungent with the chemicals, the burning and (sorry to say) the smell of death and decomposition.  I'm not convinced that the official story is the absolute truth either.

However, the event that trumps even that one, was 12/17/12, which is when I discovered the lump on my neck and which began my journey with Stage 4 Burkitt's Lymphoma.  I cannot read enough or learn enough about how others have survived or are going through cancer.  My friends are encouraging me to write a book about my experiences.

Great news on your show's success, DR FJL!       :)

How do you feel about expanding it?

We did cut three numbers from the version originally submitted (added others) during rehearsal, so material is there.

Timing is of course a consideration.  The director says he has ideas on how the parody concept can be expanded, which the group will meet about.  It occurs to me that by summer 2014, with another Tony year gone by, the concept of Bette getting unaccountably overlooked in May 2013 may be a forgotten subject - though it was still very much on people's minds when the piece was accepted in the festival, since her run in L.A., Barbra coming to see her in L.A., was being talked about, the memory of her being overlooked for the play by the Tony committee had dissipated a bit even in the last ten weeks.

Need to be comfortably within parody rules, which what we did clearly was - but if it somehow teeter-totters into an emotionally-based-story evening beyond overall parody, could be an issue of getting "Grand rights" to music, from what i understand

Hey, everyone! Sorry about not posting earlier.

TOD: I was working near Wall St. On 9/11, so I really didn't need to see/hear/read any additional info. On the good news front, back in the early 2000s, there was a below-the-fold front page article in the NY Times on a team of doctors who had performed fetal heart surgery, using the tip of an angioplasty balloon to inflate and fix a stuck valve. I spent the entire day thrusting the paper at every co-worker, and hollering "did you see THIS?"

BK: Glad to hear the performance went well. As for Terri White: yeah, she can sing and dance okay, but if you want to see REAL talent from the woman, ask her to do her bar-percussion bit to "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." :)

I live a 90-minute drive from Ground Zero, but never went in to see the site after 9/11.  I drove around the tip of Manhattan once some months afterward on my way to or from somewhere, when there was literally nothing to see from the West Side Highway (I still call it that) but a wall.  But I never went down to gawk.  That's not to say I don't wish I had seen it once for myself, but I never did it, and I still haven't been there to see the new structures, etc.

As for the TOD in general:  certainly 9/11, the JFK assassination, the Oklahoma City bombing, and in earlier days when I was active in flying, major plane crashes such as the DC-10 at O'Hare and the PSA/Cessna crash over downtown San Diego (these were in 1978/79).  And the two space shuttle disasters.  I'm no doubt forgetting some stuff at the moment, but those are the biggies.

This is funny in a very cute way :)

TOD - in addition to the big national events listed here, I could not take my eyes off Channel 5's TV coverage of the 11-day riot at the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution in Lucasville that broke out on Easter Sunday, 1993.  For one thing, I had known the warden 20 years earlier when we lived in the same apartment complex and he worked at the local Ohio prison in Lebanon.  The other thing that made this story compelling for me was the Channel 5 reporter Norma Rashid who covered the story nonstop and was VERY pregnant.  Rob was still in pre-school and I was wrestling with how to keep my career afloat as a mostly stay-at-home mom and watching Norma just tore my heart out.

Great news, Fred!  Good luck!

Good afternoon, all!

I'm a little late to the party today, as it was my first day off from a heap of things in the couple of weeks since I left the Arctic.

BK, thank you for the kind words and especially for the wonderful music to sing last night. For those who may have missed the details, BK did a brilliant put-together of "Hey, There" from Pajama Game and "Not a Day Goes By" from Merrily We Roll Along, and I got to sing it. And singing "Pretty Women" from Sweeney is a banquet in itself for me.

Funny thing is, I awoke hearing Jenna's "Glamorous Life" in my head all morning. Such a great show it was, with so many wonderful performances.

The review made me chuckle. "his warm voice and his causal attire" - I wonder what my attire caused?  :D

I've been lazy and not lazy.  I had to deal with some publisher stuff this morning, which took a while - the book goes to the production department by Friday or at least that's the hope.  The content department is vetting it now to make sure there's nothing in it that could cause problems.  You would think they wouldn't even bother given the book takes place in 1880 and is fiction, but what do I know?  I can't imagine they'll come back with anything, but after last year's hilarity with them telling me The Music Man was a trademarked title (it wasn't - they found some clothing company called The Music Man that had a trademark - nothing to do with my book or its plot - they ultimately apologized and cleared the use but by then I'd come up with the alternate title and liked it better - nothing would surprise me.  Of course, if they do find something they will get the full dose of BK at his most lethal.  Let's hope for their sake they have some brains.

Oops - it was Hermione Gingold, not Glynis Johns. Still can't find the clip, though.

Well, they played mother and daughter, so perhaps you were just mixed up because of the family resemblance.

I guess I'm one of those out of towners who went to  ground zero.  I didn't go there until about a year and a half after it happened. We had a seminar at the Marriott Financial Center.

I had stayed in the Marriott WTC less than a year before 911 and remember going to a dinner at the top to honor Bianca Jagger for her international work against the death penalty.  I sat at the same table with Ricky Kleiman, William Bratton, Micky Sherman and others.  (they were grooming me for leadership in the criminal defense lawyers organization, but I decided against it).  I took lots of photos that day out the windows.  I looked at those a lot on 911

I think for me any many others going there was making it real.   It was real to all of you who are there, of course. And I'm sure there are a lot of others who have absolutely no interest in making it real, but it was so hard to get my mind around it, that even seeing it over and over on TV, it really didn't seem real. Even being evacuated from a federal building, waiting in line for hours to give blood and watching the media scamper when they heard President Bush was in Omaha (90 miles away) didn't make it real.  The first trip there was very sobering. It was a chance for me to pay my respects to those who perished, something I felt a need to do even though I didn't know them.

But it was also uplifting. I saw that people were back at work, some surrounding buildings had been repaired and rebuilt and others were preparing to open or be demolished.  It was good to see.   It was like the American Spirit. No matter what happens, you can't keep us down.

I went to the same hotel for a seminar a couple years later and it was so cool to see how life had come back even more.   I want to go back again and go to the memorial.   I guess I don't completely understand why I have  need to go there, but I do.  I suspect many other people from around the country and the world have the same feeling.

Then I went back to the movie over and over.  I was amazed at the little details that were historically correct.  It was fun to catch another here and there.  I've always been interested in the Titanic, but not like I was for a while ther

And Ok, I read 24 books about the OJ Simpson case and trial.  I think Jeffrey Toobin's was the best

I tend to get interested in something and read absolutely everything I can about it.  Then when my curiosity is satisfied, I don't think about it anymore

I'm like you on that. I read everything about the BTK killer when he got arrested and haven't thought about him in ages.

I didn't mean to come off as critical -  and I  am sorry if that is how it appeared -  it is all too real to me -  the street I live on was renamed for the grandfather of of the Vixter's classmates - (as was our post office)  other streets in our town are named after people in town who perished that day

my family was very lucky -  my brother was delayed by a phone call  and was late for his meeting at building # 2 -  - my cousin's business trip was cancelled on Monday night, so he wasn't on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon

but there are too many people I know who have less fortunate families..

I  guess I am just afraid that if I go down there I will start crying and not be able to stop ever again

Oh, I didn't take it as you being critical at all.  Someone wondered about out of towners going there or something like that, anyway, it was my way of explaining my experience.  I would definitely feel differently if I had lived through it there.

And I'm sorry if I talked about 911 too much, I know it's a sensitive subject for some and I don't want to bring up bad feelings for anyone

Vixmom, it just happens that I carry a li'l memory around with me about the February 1993 bombing of the WTC.  It was a day I took off work to drive friends and self out to a then-new CompUSA store near a large mall -- was it Hempstead?  Valley Stream?  I forget, but I guess it had to be out toward Vixville USA.  Anyhoo, the bombing had happened that morning, and all day long we kept listening to WCBS (traffic and weather on the eights) and eyeing the WTC from a distance -- it was an overcast but sharp, clear day, and the skyline and twin towers were etched so beautifully, and it all looked so calm from out there on the expressways and bridges.

I just watched THIEF for my first time since 1981.  What a movie!  Another li'l memory:  I was living on Mentone Ave. in Palms and saw it at the Century Plaza with a sparse audience on a quiet week night.  It played the large theater and I sat in the rear about halfway up the stadium seating.  At the time, I found it entertaining or suspenseful enough, but much of it flew right over my head and I kind of forgot it over the years, even after getting to know a couple of other Michael Mann films.  Now it's so rewarding to return to things like that and be able to sink my teeth into them.

Well, I too must get some beauty sleep.  I have my checkup at the optometrist tomorrow.  I totally missed last year's, and I'm pretty sure it's time for a change in prescription, so.....here goes a few more bucks.  (A few.  Ha.  I do amuse myself.)
