Well, you've read the notes, the notes streamed, and now it is time for you to post until the streaming cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SYNERGY!
-
Topic of the Day: I stream Netflix as well as get the discs. I don't watch much streaming, though. But what I do watch is not available on disc. I watch all different kinds of things, but mostly I've watched some pretty interesting documentaries.
-
Bruce, the original(BBC) House of Cards is on Netflix I would urge you to watch that once you finish Season Two
-
Don't quite know what I'm doing up even earlier than I need be, but alas.
-
And what's with three posts?
-
Here's the complete info on the new release:
Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition world premiere release – three great scores on one CD:
APPOINTMENT WITH DANGER
THE ACCUSED
SEPTEMBER AFFAIR
Music Composed and Conducted by Victor Young
Paramount and Victor Young – one of the greatest studio/composer relationships in history. Over the course of his career, Victor Young received an astonishing twenty-two Oscar nominations (in 1940 and 1941 he was nominated four times in the same year!). But he would not win the golden statuette during his lifetime – he won the Oscar for Best Music (Dramatic or Comedy Picture) posthumously for Around the World in Eighty Days. Some of his themes are among the most beloved of all time. For this CD, we are proud to present three world premiere releases – a Victor Young triple bill.
First up is Appointment With Danger, a 1951 crime film noir directed by Lewis Allen, starring Alan Ladd, Phyllis Calvert, Paul Stewart, Jan Sterling, Jack Webb and Harry Morgan. For the film, Young composed a terrific score, beginning with an exciting “Prelude.” From there he provides wonderful underscoring for the various plot turns, with nary a love theme to be heard. This is Young in suspense and drama mode and he keeps things moving along right up until the exciting final cues.
Our second feature, The Accused, is another film noir, this one from 1949, starring Loretta Young, Robert Cummings, Wendell Corey and Sam Jaffe. Beginning with a classic Young “Prelude” which sets the tone for all that follows, the score plays up the characters and their emotions. It features a beautiful theme, which is used throughout the score. There’s also some suspense music here and there – it’s a terrific score straight down the line.
For our final feature, we have September Affair, a 1950 film starring Joseph Cotton, Joan Fontaine, Jessica Tandy and Robert Arthur. The score for September Affair is a perfect example of what Young did as well as anyone – a gorgeously melodic, picturesque, touching and captivating score. You’ll musically visit Rome, Naples, Pompeii and Capri, and be a party to all the drama the characters face. Young also subtly uses the great Kurt Weill/Maxwell Anderson song “September Song” skillfully in some cues.
This is the world premiere release for all three scores, and we present all the surviving cues from each, transferred from the elements in the Paramount vaults.
Victor Young died too young at 56 – but he left behind a brilliant film music legacy and we’re very pleased to bring these three great scores to CD for the first time.
Appointment With Danger/The Accused/September Affair is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.
CDs will ship by the last week of April, but we’ve been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good morning, all! Although i was feeling nauseous last night, it didn't become a major event. I slept quite soundly and I'm feeling rather well this morning. In another hour, I'll leave for physical therapy. On my way home, I'll stop at the post office and ship a package to Wright State University. Around 2:00, I'll hop on the 104 bus and head downtown to join my friends Bruce Pomahac and Rob Berman for a social call and dinner.
After all that flurry of phone calls on Thursday and Friday, there's been no word since from the Man from Philadelphia. I was sure there would be The Big Phone Call yesterday, but it never happened. I'll send him an email today and see if he's okay.
More coffee!

How are we at Monday again already?!?!?!?!
-
Good morning, all.
It's not only Monday, but I saw a few snow flurries.
I know it won't amount to anything, but really now. Really.

Coffee!!
Oh. Thanks.

CD ORDERED!
I forgot to post yesterday....and had too many things on my feeble mind.

I had a pretty decent sleep, I guess, and no great backache upon awakening this time, and that's always a nice thing.
Wish I could bring back more the dream I was having, in which I was finding my way through a few blocks in midtown Manhattan by climbing over and across buildings. Getting down was always the more challenging part, but there were several of us (total strangers) heading down this one at the same time, and between us we figured it out; i.e., which parts of the "rocky hillside" to grab, step on, and, in a very dreamlike way, to "float" down upon. After reaching the bottom of this last one, and needing to find our way back out to the street, we entered it by the only available door and it turned out to be one of the older theaters that's not often in use these days, and the watchman there told us that leaving was not permitted.

Monday morning greetings! We're having a couple of spring-like days here in SW Ohio, but some wintery weather will be back mid-week. It shouldn't last long, though...
-
Good morning, all.
I still want my hour of sleep back.

I have done Netflix twice on freebie months. I didn't have enough time to watch things they sent and they often didn't have what I wanted to watch. That said, I'd like to see the new season of Arrested Development.
-
Where is TCB?
-
TOD:
I don't stream from Netflix; I rent DVDs.
I was told from a customer service person at Netflix that titles become available quicker on DVD than they do for streaming.
Actually, I'm an off/on customer of the service. I'll wait for several movies that interest me to become available before I renew my membership, then after I go through those films, I suspend my membership again until the "well" refills.
-
TOD: I don`t use netflix. But I know a lot of people who do. For dvds you can get any movies or tv shows you want to watch in entirety.
-
TOD
I've never streamed.
I can count on my hands the number of times I've even watched something on YouTube all the way through. (Outside the Box doesn't count. :) )
I don't even allow my TV or players to be connected to the internet. Well, perhaps "allow" is a little extreme. I mean, it's not as if they're going to go online and do their evil deeds while I'm asleep or anything ..... right? (On the other hand, maybe one can never be too sure.....) I only connect via the wifi "dongle" to update firmware.
But I digress! Oh lord, how I digress.
I'm so dedicated to "physical media" that, like BK, the thought of even learning what all of those crazy names mean has never been tempting in the least, and I don't even want to think about the quality issues. Which isn't necessarily logical. I pay an enormous amount for cable, of which I actually watch very little, and of course cable reception and quality can run the gamut, too. So, I know that's a long held prejudice. But I also feel I don't need the temptation of having thousands more things at my fingertips -- especially at any additional expense.
Now, having spewed all of that, I have to admit that after BK first posted about House of Cards the other day, I did, in fact, consider that a free month of Netflix just might be something to take advantage of. From what I've heard, it's obvious I'd like seeing the show. It doesn't have to be one I feel the need of "owning", like the real classics on my shelf. Maybe this would be a good experiment. Maybe. Just maybe.
Edit: But that room isn't "wired", and it ain't gonna be. I'd have to do it over the wifi, and I wonder how good or consistent a connection that would be for streaming. Maybe someone here can weigh in on that?
-
Also: why does the ability to stream Netflix or any of the other services depends on one's TV or Blu-ray player being, say, "Netflix-ready" in the first place? If it can be connected to the internet, then shouldn't it be able to access any such service? Is there really something that needs to be "built in" on a given piece of equipment? Okay, maybe I can figure this out. Because they don't have keyboards and operating systems and we aren't looking at web pages, there needs to be something to "click on". So what the TV or player offers is, basically, a shortcut to a site. Is that it?

TOD - I have streamed ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK from NetFlix and watched it on my iPad. Richard watches a lot of British mysteries the same way and Rob uses his Kindle Fire to watch Star Trek episodes. In fact, it's the availability of those episodes that prompted Rob to give me the go-ahead to dispose of the videotapes that no one seems to want.

-
Excuse my ignorance, but what in the HELL is Randy Newman's "Faust"?
It's a musical that he wrote more than 20 years ago, about the same time Jimmy Buffett was writing "Don't Stop the Carnival" and Paul Simon was writing "Capeman." It got staged once and I don't think it was really ready for the stage. It was turned into a concept album with Newman and Linda Ronstadt and a few others. I've got a copy, listened to it a few times.

It's the story of Faust, see? And it's by Randy Newman.

I just knew you'd appreciate my clearing that up for you. :)

I do not stream, baby - my television is not hooked up to the inner web in any way. I have Starz & Showtime, and I can't even watch all of the things available there.....

I'm back from therapy. My walking therapist Morgan is stuck in Indiana because of a canceled flight, so there was no walking today. I did walk home from my post office stop and i will shortly walk the the bus stop to head downtown.
Has anyone checked on DR TCB?

Okay. now I am worried about DR TCB. I tried to phone him and his voice mail is full. I cannot leave a message.

Good afternoon to all
I have returned home and now have 10 days of notes and postings to catch up on

And we figured if we could stream we would join Netflix again. I like your idea of dropping and renewing. We tried that but still couldn't get the movies we wanted.

I want to watch on my nice large tv, not on an iPad, which I don't own anyway. Keith and I also watch most shows together.
-
TOD - I love Netflix streaming. Right now, I'm almost done with season 2 of House of Cards. I like the series, but I have a hard time remembering "relationships" and things like that. I'm at a point now that a certain character now seems to be associated with another main character and I don't know why. It's rather addicting and most likely, I'lll watch the entire series again before season 3 just so I can keep things in order
-
Okay. now I am worried about DR TCB. I tried to phone him and his voice mail is full. I cannot leave a message.
Did you email him?
-
I've also watching "Orange is the New Black" as well as some back TV series. The movie selections are hit and miss. More often than not, they don't have what I want to watch.

I sent our E&T DR Jed a message on Facebook, and will check on DR TCB today. I also emailed DR TCB, telling hi I'd contacted Jed and asking him if he would email me back.
It seemed odd to email him since has hasn't been online with us along with the fact that his voice mail for his phone is full. If you're lying on the floor in a coma and can't answer your phone, you're not going to be typing at your computer.
-
I just sent an e-mail, also. I can only hope that he's okay. :-\

I want to thank everyone for the prayers and condolences this past week. It means a lot to me. It has been a difficult time this past week and I am very grateful.

I'm up again. Tired, but up, wishing I didn't have to go to the lunch meeting or Jason's show tonight - but the latter at least will be fun.
-
I think they build in the shortcuts to Netflix on Blu-ray and TVs to make it easy and I'm sure Netflix pays for that privilege.
-
Hello ALL:
TOD:
I don't STREAM!!!
-
Goodbye for now!!!
-
Happy Monday, all!
TOD:
I rent DVD's from Netflix, but I did take them up n their free month like you did, BK.
So far, I watched one film and some episodes of The West Wing, which I somehow missed when it was on. But I doubt that I will stick with it, because I don't have a device that links the streaming to my television, and my laptop's sound just isn't good enough to not have to be ear-plugged into it for the whole time. Not my favorite thing to do.
I may watch some Orange is the New Black before my free month runs out. But I have some European sites where I find TV for free, so I won't be paying Netflix for streaming anytime soon.
Much to do this day. I'm off and running...

Mainly for financial constraints, but also for other reasons (which some may term wariness of Big Brother), I do not have cable or streaming, or internet, other than the "hotspot" I can piggyback from the main clubhouse here in my apartment development. I surf the web using an anonymizer and do not like to be tied into the vast electronic web (satellite, phone, radio, etc.) that unfortunately surrounds us, as ubiquitous as the air we move through.

Here's a game that Cat Lady Barbie might be good at:
-
I haven't had grilled cheese in years. When the boys were very young I was in a playgroup and one of mother's would make us grilled cheese using cinnamon raisin bread. It was delicious though I'm not sure how much I would like that today.
Hmmm, now I'm in the mood for a grilled colby jack cheese on a good sourdough or peasant bread sandwich.
-
Congratulations DR Ginny!
-
DR Dan M the game looks like fun. I miss being a crazy Cat Lady.

DR John G. - some of them do.
The Daiya does a pretty good approximation of melting. :)

Sounds like a vegan Wicked joke. Elphaba is given something given milk to drink and she curls her fingers into quote marks while moaning, "I'm 'melting.' I'm 'melting.'"
(It's a copy editor joke.)

And, we may have an opportunity to exceed our budget projection. We've been sharing that space with an organization whose staff wants to shop the leftovers tomorrow!
Thanks for the congrats!

My friends in the Netherlands are getting a new Bernese Mountain Dog Puppy. They went to the breeder with their 2 year old daughter and two adult Bernese Mountain Dogs. My favorite photo is of her little girl bent over hugging one of the 5 week old puppies.

Question for the HHW people who live in New York or go to NYC
My sister is considering going to NYC on Tony weekend. She love theatre and was wondering for musicals if most stars would be more likely to be in or out on Tony weekend. She was figuring out on the Sunday. But i thought i`d ask.

I've been a Netflix subscriber since 2006 and make good use of it. I have both streaming and the discs. It's true that the DVDs are usually available before the streaming, but there can be a long wait for the new releases of popular DVDs, although Netflix has improved in this area recently. With the exception of the latest DOC MARTIN season, I'm able to get most of what I want pretty quickly. I prefer streaming because there's no wait and no trouble with discs getting lost in the mail or damaged. Not everything is available on streaming though, which is why I also have the DVD subscription.
-
Hi, Jane.

I'm glad to say I was on facebook and happened to see that TCB was on too. I had a little chat with him-he says he'll be back in a day or two.

Thanks for posting this.

Streaming video requires good broadband, which I get from Time Warner (standard, not turbo). I've never had cable TV; I think it's just too expensive. My Netflix subscription is far cheaper than I'd pay for cable TV and gives me most of what I want. I sometimes stream from PBS's website, but their streaming video is often faulty. Frankly, the PBS website is crap--one of the worst website designs I've seen--which is a shame, as I used to be a big PBS fan. The PBS shows usually move to Netflix after they expire on PBS and then I'm able to watch them without interruption.
-
I stream from my laptop. If you want to stream on your TV then you need a Roku or some other device. I know little about this since I never do it.
-

I too just noticed that he's on FB. Whew! ;D

Bruce, Netflix streaming offers many things I think you'd like, including many of the foreign TV shows. I like to watch a new show on Netflix first. Many of the shows I thought I wanted on disc proved to not be that good.

Gots to go.

For years we couldn't watch our local PBS station for the same reason. Finally we can get it in HD. It is still a local station and the new episodes of DOC MARTIN just began. Unfortunately our direcTV went out a few times while the show was recording. It was rather annoying but not too long that we couldn't follow the story.
Before purchasing our next house we will make sure we can get the fastest possible internet connection out there along with streaming.

OK, folks, a really important interrelated set of questions: Best bread and best cheese for a grilled cheese sandwich?

Pumpernickel sounds good but not seeded rye. I have been craving a good Jewish rye which I can't get here, seeded of course. I just am not sure it would be my first pick for grilled cheese.
-
Well, I couldn't get sourdough at Costco on my way home, so I had to settle for whole grain. Sweet, boring bread. But the manchego with roasted red peppers melted together beautifully. I bought some sharp Cheddar and some Gouda so I can continue to play around with sandwiches.

when my best friend moved from NY to Nebraska I used to go to the bakery buy a fresh unsliced seeded rye - wrap it really tightly in saran wrap and then ship it to her by two day post
-
That was nice of you. I used to order it from Zingerman's in Michigan. I have good Challah from Portland along with sourdough from San Francisco so I don't really need any now. It would be nice to be able to purchase this locally. I can get challah, just not to my liking.

Why the fat hell is the US post office delivering UPS packages? I'll never get my damned shipment. And why the idiot postal person is unable to leave a package with the super is another question I'd like answered.
-
Thanks DR Vixmom. I still have some excellent challah I picked up at my favorite bakery in Portland when we went for Thanksgiving. It was the first time I was there on a Friday and never even knew they baked challah. In Los Angeles you can buy it any day of the week. I'm guessing it is the same in NY.
-
Why the fat hell is the US post office delivering UPS packages? I'll never get my damned shipment. And why the idiot postal person is unable to leave a package with the super is another question I'd like answered.
Because it most places the packages get delivered in the mail box. I guess they save money that way. I had thought they did it here because of the rural deliveries, guess it is everywhere.
-
So, the UPS package I expected today was brought by the same ass who last week did not ring my bell and i have to go to the goddam post office tomorrow to pick it up. I get to take with me te unmangled half of one of my magazines, since the postal carrier destroyed it trying to jam too much into my post box. What the goddam post office needs is an internal affairs dept to check into some of the atrocities committed by works and managers. This crap I'm going through will continue until my regular carrier returns.
If he does.
Shit.

I stopped Netflix because the films I was most interest in RKO and MGM movies from the30's & 40"s were not available for streaming and I didn't want to wait for the films to arrive in the mail.

Thanks DR Vixmom. I still have some excellent challah I picked up at my favorite bakery in Portland when we went for Thanksgiving. It was the first time I was there on a Friday and never even knew they baked challah. In Los Angeles you can buy it any day of the week. I'm guessing it is the same in NY.
yep its always available but especially on Fridays

I just heard from TCB as well - much to my relief
-
hmmm roasted red peppers on a grilled cheese sounds yummy-- and maybe some grilled mushrooms as well -- sort of a patty melt without the patty

I no longer know what timeit is but I am exhausted f good night all

Watched the sweetest, funniest little British comedy with Jessie Matthews and Michael Redgrave called Climbing High. Had never heard of it. It's from the late 1930s, and Carol Reed directed.
Some innocent and wonderfully funny slapstick.

Back from a dress rehearsal of The Sound of Music, in which two dear friends are playing principal roles. They are in good shape for their Thursday night opening performance.
-
They are doing the stage version without any interpolations.
-
Back from Jason Graae's new show, about which more later. I'm not sure when Time Warner fixed itself but all seems to be well now, so fingers crossed and knock wood. They were supposed to call when the service came back on - but I think they don't do that on purpose so you don't really know how many hours they were down - certainly six I know of for sure. Shame on them.
-
Page five? Really?
-
I think many of us are getting concerned about TCB - is there no one who can go check on him?
-
Hello, is anyone home?
-
Well, it looks like I have scared away the crowds!
-
Anyway, I am back. (I didn't even know I was missing.)
-
WE all thought you were missing and now we're going to lock you up here and throw away the key so we don't have to be concerned again. So, you now live on this board! :)
-
Anyway, I start rehearsals for LITTLE WOMEN on Wednesday. It is a paid gig for a local youth theatre school. I guess they couldn't find any students who wanted to play an old man. It should be fun. I think I have something to give to the students. We shall see.

G'night!
-
And since BK has now locked me up in this site, I guess I will go sleep in the Daily Archives.
-
But before I go......
-
One more for old times sake.

Page Six!
