Title: SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL

Well, you've read the notes, the notes shook, rattled and rolled, and now it is time for you to post until the shake, rattle and roll cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  I've only been through a couple of earthquakes and a really bad ice storm.  The ice storm was kind of cool.  Trees frozen solid, covered in a layer of ice.  It was beautiful and dangerous at the same time.  Some of the trees broke and brought down the power lines.  I think that that was the longest that I was without power...five days, I think.

And now, to bed.  I need to get to work early today so that I can leave for lunch early today.  I'm meeting a friend that I haven't seen in a couple of years (we used to work together until her "position was eliminated").  Her birthday was a few days ago, so I'll treat her. :)

Good night, BK and guests.

Re: wifi, there must be some kind of combo device (i.e. a modem/router) or some kind of newer, highly sophisticated modem that I haven't hear about because you can't have a wifi signal in your place of residence without a router, which distributes the Internet signal so it can be picked up by devices with a wireless card or wireless device. A modem connects one device to the Internet but it's hard-wired to a computer and the modem doesn't create and/or distribute a wifi signal. That being said, there are apartment complexes and other facilities that promote "free wifi" and you can get it without a modem and/or router. Your laptop or desktop must have a wireless card attached or built in so it can pick up that signal.

You can also usually nowadays, get wifi at a hotel when you're traveling. That signal, whether in a complex (such as a friend's unit here in New York) or in a hotel, is using a router (in the case of a large facility a strong router or many routers) to distribute the signal to all corners of the facility.

When we got our high speed internet (DSL) from Verizon in 2008 I specifically asked for a modem/router because we have a desktop and a laptop. The laptop has a wireless card installed and that's how we get on-line with the LT, using the wireless signal generated by the modem/router.

A caveat to all my postings about wifi. Yes, you can have wifi without having a router (or even a modem) but that means, as Dan M said a few days ago, depending on the unknowing kindness of strangers. Some wifi signals can be strong or very strong and they "bleed" out of the originating space and can be picked up by devices around the area. That's why, when you go to sign in at a public wifi location you may see a list of available networks, not just the network in the facility (Panera, Starbucks, etc.) you're using. If a network is not secured (i.e. password protected) anyone can use the signal. It's how my in-laws used the Internet until they broke down and got real Internet service. They (I actually) attached a wireless card to the old PC in the basement and put that device near the window and it picked up a non password protected signal. Sometimes it worked well but often it didn't. If the weather was bad or other people (besides the in-laws) were piggy-backing on the signal it became weak or non-usable.

So, as I wrap up this lecture, I repeat, the way to get a reliable and usable wifi signal is to have a modem with high speed internet service and a router which will send the signal through your house or apartment. Once you have the signal set up you password protect it so that others won't piggyback on your signal which can cause things as benign as signal degradation to an all-out takeover of your computer via virus and/or malware distribution .

This will not be on the test at the end of the semester  8)

Last night I went to see Karen Olivo.

Boy oh Boy. Mr. BRUCE KIMMEL hould work with her. I partially forgive her for being a last minute replacement, but she has no idea how to do a cabaret show.

She has a beautiful singing voice but.....

1) Her patter in between songs went on and on and on
2) There were tons of hums, has, you knows and many more crutch words (as we say in Toastmasters)
3) She would drink water before and after (and sometimes during) each song
4) Stood center stage and never moved from that spot. Although she started singing offstage and entered from upstage that was a nice touch,.
5) Never introduced her musical director once during act one. I have never seen a performer not do that before.
6) Just walked off the stage at the end of act one without telling the audience this is where the intermission is. Never seen that before either.
7)Told the audience she doesn't do encores because she thinks they are phony. (They are and the other singers I have seen make jokes about them) But did one last song.
8..) Never did a proper thank you.
9) Has no idea has to use her hands/arms.
10) plays with her (Beautiful) hair.

People left at intermission mainly from what I was told was because of her endless talking between songs.
Some people behind me gave her a standing ovation. I do not think it was deserved.

She has one more show tonight and I hope the producer talks to her and she revises this show and shortens her patter and removes the ah ums etc as they are really annoying. Move around the stage a little more and stop drinking all that water!!

If she is going to do more shows she needs someone to work with and have a clicker or a bell handing to use every time she utters a "crutch" word. She would be amazed how much she says.

A side note.
She has given up performing in musical theater because during West Side Story she broke her foot and damage her tendons as well. She did fall in love and moved to Madison Wisconsin. She also has basically given up acting as well.

Good morning, all! I will most likely be E&T until this mess is cleaned up. I am going back to bed and staying there as long as possible. At some point when i'm up to it, i will wander through the bathroom rubble and retrieve what's salvageable.  It turns out that very little of the ceiling above the bathtub fell, but the sink and toilet are buried.  I hope I can find my razor.

One of my employers at the Drama Book Shop told me in 1980, whatever problems you have in your first NYC apartment will haunt you. She was so right! And some day I'll post all about my first apartment on West 94th, the neighbors above me, the ghosts, the bathroom leak, and the hit men,

Fortunately, nothing too awful.
The 1973 ice storm in Connecticut was bad; the whole state was shut down for close to 2 weeks.
More recently, also in CT, a pre-Halloween freak storm cut off power in town for well over a week (however, I personally never lost power).
Several hurricanes on the East coast, but never catastrophic (in my area, at least - others suffered greatly).

TOD

As a kid in Florida, a couple of pretty big hurricanes, with no personal damage to speak of.
In California, many "minor" earthquakes, and the biggest I experienced was the Whittier in 1987.  Also no personal damage to speak of.

All of the really major and destructive hurricanes, and all of the really major and destructive earthquakes, came before and after my years of living in those two places.

Here in Connecticut, my first big one was the "storm of the century" in March 1993.  No personal hardship or damage.  I was living in a nice place that was completely tended to by uber-competent and caring people, and my only job was to hole up and enjoy the incredible snowfall and cozy forced vacation.  As odd as this may sound, I now look back upon those few days as a sort of temporary return to the safe and trusting realm of childhood...with the benefit of appreciating it as an adult.

The President's Day Blizzard in February 2003 brought incredible snowfall, but again, no personal damage or hardship.

Finally, the Halloween Nor'easter in 2011, of which DR singdaw spoke, and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 -- both of which affected Yrs Truly in the way of power outages lasting, as I recall, two days for the former and three for the latter.  Those two hellish experiences, one year after another, seemed to make up for all the breaks I'd gotten up to now, and are the reasons I went to ridiculous expense to have this generator.

Of course, I was in Los Angeles for the Northridge quake, which eventually forced me to move out of my condo for 2 1/2 months while it was being repaired.  (Thankfully, I had great earthquake insurance.)

But, the one I really remember was the major Seattle quake of 1948.  I don't recall the Richter scale number, but I do remember than our neighbor's chimney wound up in our front yard...and there were people killed in that one.

I was 7 years old, home sick from school that day, sitting on our living room sofa in my robe & pajamas, reading a Tom Mix comic book when it struck.

I wonder whatever happened to that comic book.

Here's the famous tabloid story of when Karen Olivo met Prince (the music star, not Hal Prince) at a Tonys party, when Prince shlepped to the party especially to meet her

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0G--swh_qY

She has an interesting perspective on this in this discussion of the famous meeting.  Many other people would have been thrilled by such a reaction from Prince, but Karen is after all happily married, and one assumes for that reason she felt like Prince was looking at her like a "pork chop" as a result.

For our Irish viewing pleasure last night, friends and I enjoyed DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE.

I was the only one present who'd seen it or even knew of it, though I'd remembered nothing of it, being all of ten the one time I saw it.  But we found it absolutely charming, and it shall be a staple from now on.

The DVD includes a couple of LI'L featurettes, and what appears to be the full length "Disneyland" episode devoted to the film.  All are worthy.

Thanks go to DR Elmore for inspiring the choice.  You had a crappy evening yourself, but that posting inspired a nice rediscovery here, and it shan't be forgotten.

Hello All:

TOD:

NATURAL DISASTERS:

In January of 1977, Buffalo had one of the worst blizzards on record.

I was working at the time, we were let out early.  I was in Downtown Buffalo.  People were literally falling and sliding down the sidewalks in front of me.  I was headed for City Hall were my Aunt Betty was working.  I couldn't see two feet in front of me.

Two guys in a Four wheel Drive vehicle told me to get in.  I did, they saved my life.  We ended up going to eat at a restaurant (still open), then slept at their office.  Then they drove me home.

I ended up dating one of them.    After a few dates, he told me he was married.  I said "Don't ever call me again".

The mess is hopefully over. There are no leaks coming from the bathroom above me at this minute and the construction folk have left the apartment, after insuring that all of the crap that fell into my sink, bath, and toilet have clogged up nothing. I expect the cleanup will take me the rest of the day and possibly some of tomorrow.  The toilet, sink, and tub are now washed out, and everything in the bathroom with a layer of silt needs to be dusted or wiped with a damp cloth.

I've got a fan blowing in the bathroom to dry up all of the water on the floor so I can sweep and then mop.  When the floors are mopped and dry, I can scour the tub and sink. I have more laundry to do as well, and I will shortly begin that. It's a real mess. I expect  I will have to repeat much of this after the ceiling is repaired.

TOD - We occasionally have earthquakes here in Ohio which originate in the New Madrid seismic zone.  One was in the summer of 1980.  I was in the bedroom of my apartment and the dangly drawer pulls on my dresser and chest of drawers all jangled.  Then, just a few years ago between Christmas and New Year's, I was having a quiet morning coffee, felt the house shudder, and heard all the jingle bells that are part of our holiday decor.

Probably the worst natural disaster was when the winds of Hurricane Ike made their way to SW Ohio on Sunday, September 14, 2008.  The actual windstorm only lasted a few hours, but the aftermath of power outages lasted for days.  We were without power until the following Friday afternoon.  The problem was that our power company had sent crews to Texas and Louisiana in anticipation of THEIR damage and it took a while for them to get back here where they were really needed.  Fortunately, we still had water, including hot water, and I still had a workplace to go to where I could charge my phone and commiserate.

A side note.
She has given up performing in musical theater because during West Side Story she broke her foot and damage her tendons as well. She did fall in love and moved to Madison Wisconsin. She also has basically given up acting as well.

Mike, I'd assume she's given up doing extended runs of shows, because just last week, she was announced for TICK TICK BOOM at the Encores Off-Center Summer Series.

Actually she is divorced. She just got engaged to man from Madison with two kids

I ended up dating one of them.    After a few dates, he told me he was married.  I said "Don't ever call me again".

Dating a married guy was better than what might have happened getting into a car with 2 strange men ;D

Just ate my first leftover in the form of a Corned Beef Sandwich on Rye.

1. Pile the corned beef on the bread to the desired height.
2. Nuke that in the microwave just long enough to recreate the kind of warmth you'd expect to have it served in the corned beef jernt of your choice.  I gave it 20 seconds and both the beef and the bread were perfect.
3. Apply a good deli mustard.
4. Eat.

After I cook a corned beef I trim it of those couple of large areas of fat, which takes a couple of minutes but is so worth it, especially when eaten in sandwich form.  I've never had one in a deli any better than this.

Yes...and if you can put in a word of caution, tell Mr. Warlow his previous recordings have WAY too much reverb and his voice does not need that (so-called) enhancement.

TOD:

On April 3, 1974, Louisville was besieged by tornadoes and we spent most of a 24-hour period in our basement with nothing but the lights on. I would have been 11 at the time. It was too dangerous, in my parents' opinion, to listen to the radio or watch a TV, so we had nothing to do but be bored. Thankfully, our area was not hit, but many of the neighborhoods around ours was.

I remember someone from school coming over to work on a class project more than a month after this happened. His neighborhood had been severely hit, and he couldn't get over all the trees we still had. The street at that time was lined with massive old oaks, many more than 30 feet tall. A number of those have been cut down in the intervening years because of age and disease, but the street is still shady and tranquil thanks to the ones that are left.

Finished watching the Edie DVDs Adams today. The best segment was an extended Kurt Weill medley that she did with Bobby Darin -- and it did not include Mack the Knife or her theme song, which was from "Marie Galante." They just started singing some songs with intros like Bobby saying, "And here's one from 'Street Scene' ..." before launching into "Moonfaced, Starry-Eyed" as if everyone knew the show and the song. Then Edie would sing "Surabaya Johnny" in German or "Thousands of Miles" from "Lost in the Stars" and they ended up dueting on "Here I'll Stay" from "Love Life." It went on for about 15 minutes.

Yes, I was actually staying at our Aunt Betty's house.  My college had already cancelled classes that day so I was not out in the blizzard.  Betty had to stay overnight in her office and got a ride as far as the corner of her street and walked the rest of the way.  That was certainly a memorable winter.   The normal snowfall for a season in Buffalo is about 100 inches and as I recall that year the total was 199.

I have lived through many hurricanes, Nor'easters and blizzards.  1977 was quite the year.  We had "Star Wars", an extremely frigid winter in which the Great South Bay froze over (people could safely walk to Fire Island), and several very bad storms, a loss of electricity for a week or so in the summer, floods in the basement, and my dog walking over the snow drifts to several neighbors' yards way down the block.  She loved the cold and snow so much, she would run with her nose buried in the snow and would lose track of where she was.  Even though she was a dark Benji-type dog, she was hard to find with the white-out conditions.

Why do you need to finish the book you are reading first? Are you only allowed to have a certain amount of e-books out at a time? Also how long do you have to read the books (i.e., why are you afraid you won't have time to finish)? You are such a quick reader.

I lent my sister my copy of Divergent.  I don't love the idea of anyone touching my books (I like them to be perfect). But she was over and she mentioned that she was waiting for it from the library.  So i lent her my copy in my bagabook minus the cover (the cover is the thing I'm craziest about being perfect).

T.O.D.

I guess we have had a couple of severe wind storms, and a couple of major earthquakes.

The worst storm was the Columbus Day Storm of 1962.  It was on a Friday night.  I can remember while eating dinner in the kitchen, I could hear on the TV in the living room them talking about this huge windstorm in Oregon.  Well, Hell, nobody said it was coming our way.  So my mom had a meeting at church and I was going to the Proctor Theater, as I did most every Friday night.  About an hour into the movie, the power went out in the theater and the movie stopped.  By the time my friends and I got up to the lobby the owner, Mr. Spencer, was blocking the doors so that no one could open the main doors.  He was saying over and over again that no one was allowed to leave, but that everyone had to call their parents to come and pick them up.  The line formed to use the one phone, so my friends and I went upstairs to the bathroom where there was a window in the hallway that looked out on the street.  Stuff like garbage cans and newspaper boxes and everything else that wasn't tied down was flying down the street and you could tell that lights were out everywhere.  By the time we got back downstairs, my mom was at the theater door looking for me, so I got to leave.  On the ride home, the trees were coming down everywhere, but our house was safe and sound.  The only thing we lost was out garbage.  The next day, I found our garbage can about a block from the house, but we never found any of the garbage.  There was something like $200 million in damage between Washington and Oregon, and something like 40 people died.

Thanks! It was an effort surviving the night, and I will offend no one's delicate feelings by telling how I managed.

Ha!  Was MBarnum's fire escape involved?

My library has my book request in.  I need to finish the book I'm reading before checking out The Divergent Series Two-Book Collection: Insurgent & Divergent.  I will need everyday I can get to read the two books together, unless I don't like book one in which case I won't read the sequel.

From notification my hold is ready I have 72 hours to check it out before the hold is canceled.  I received the email 18 hours ago so I still have plenty of time left to finish my current book.

I have learned to removed covers from books before lending them out.

I only have 21 days to keep the book and  I don't want to feel rushed reading them.  I might even want a short break in-between the two books.

I have one chapter left on my current book which I expect to finish tonight before falling asleep.  If I'm not sleepy yet I'll check out the new books and begin reading.

I don't know how many books I can check out at once.  The most I have had were 4.

Hopefully it's called Divergent & Insurgent. Wouldn't want to read the 2nd book first! :)

I went to pick up my tickets for tomorrow Divergent movie and they didn't even ask for my name. They just handed me the tickets. ??

LOL, I will make sure I read the correct one first.

Did you have a code number for the tickets?

We have AMERICAN HUSTLE to watch tonight.  I'm not sure I will enjoy the story.
I'm debating whether to watch this. I don't think it will be my cup of tea.

I expect the acting will make it worth it and Keith should enjoy it.

Yikes!!  Glad I wasn't born yet.

;)

Are you sorry you asked?

No, it was very interesting.  Thank you.  Now I'm wondering why Vixdad was in the US and not Canada ;)

Vixdad was offered a 18 month  gig in New York  he saw it as a working holiday -  he  took side trips to  Niagra Falls, Washington DC , Florida as well as exploring NYC  his plan was: after the 18 months was up to get a job in California explore the west coast a bit and then get a job in Austrailia...  but then he met  me and I am afraid I derailed his plans

DR Jane you are a super fast reader. I can't imagine that it could take you more than 3 days to finish a book. I wouldn't be worried about 21 days for 2 books. :)

TOD:

Dan I remember that ice storm in 1977 - there was a picture on the front page of Newsday  showing a VW Beetle driving across the Bay..  somewhere I have photographs of trees completely encased in thick layers of ice, looking like glass sculptures

Yes, that really left an impression on me because I think that around the same time there was an episode of "In Search Of" with Leonard Nimoy about an ice age.  The advertisement in TV Guide showed NYC buried in snow and ice and the only thing showing through was the antenna roof of the Empire State Building.  It reminded me too much of the ending of "Planet of the Apes".  "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" also gave me nightmares.

In the big  1996 Blizzard  Vixdad and I were trapped in Washington DC  in a fine hotel so I can relate to Chas's story - we had no responsibilities for snow clearing , cooking etc

Just finished spending too much time writing a profile of one of the authors of "Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking." She has a two-ingredient biscuit recipe and all I want to do is make biscuits. With plenty of butter and some blueberry or blackberry jam.

Had a nice visit with Robert A. Harris, and saw some tests for something he may or may not be working on in the future.  I was there a couple of hours.

I picked up no packages or mail, never got to the bank, came home, did work on the computer, had some telephonic calls and was lazy.
