Well, you've read the notes, the notes were flirtatious and had a mix of the gnu and the old, and now it is time for you to post until the flirtatious cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  the earliest card games that I can remember learning are Old Maid and Go Fish.  I also learned poker (not very good at all), rummy and gin rummy.  My mom is German, so we learned a game called Watten.  We haven't played that in years, so I don't remember how to play it.

The most current card game that the family plays is Phase 10.  It's like gin rummy, but it uses a special deck.  It's a lot of fun and highly recommended.

First card games were Old Maid, Slap Jack, and Crazy 8's.

Now I like to play Euchre and I can play bridge, but I am not very good at it.

Good morning, all! I slept late because I could, and I am now dressed and ready to work. I need to pull from my shelves the Piano score of IRMA LA DOUCE for a listening break today and the vocal score for LITTLE MARY SUNSHINE, since I had endless nightmares about its Act One finale last night and i want to look at its notation.

First thing up, some Cole Porter medley work. After I make the bed.

I had two LI'L ABNER dreams this week.

In the first, I was obsessed with a couple of passages in PUT 'EM BACK, notably the rideout (in the published key of Cb major, of course), and it took me a couple of hours after awakening to realize I'd also attributed the first two bars of the intro to MATRIMONIAL STOMP to PUT 'EM BACK.  Oy!  I practically ran to the score to sort that out.

The second was this morning.  After the couple of crazy dreams (which still refuse to come back into focus), I woke up sort of hearing/"playing" DRUTHERS ... in the key of B major.

Must be my new favorite key.  I wonder what's next.

TOD:

I haven't played card games in years...except on the computer.

I recall, as a kid, playing Authors.  We also played Canasta when it was in fashion.

Now, on the computer, I'll play Solitaire and Gin Rummy.

TOD - My family played a rummy game called Liverpool and I played a lot of canasta with my Grandma.  Best memories are playing cards on the screened in porch of our house in Detroit.  We didn't have air conditioning, so we'd play cards on summer evenings until the upstairs bedrooms were cool enough for sleeping.

DR Ginny, your mention of Tri-County Mall brings back some memories.  My folks had just moved from Fort Lauderdale to Cincinnati the week before Christmas 1968, and I drove down from school in Cleveland for the holidays.  There was shopping to be done, so I got my introductions to Tri-County, the original Kenwood shopping center area, and of course the still glorious downtown - with real department stores, Willis Music, etc. etc.  I had Cincinnati chili, probably a Perkins breakfast, and other such delights for the first time.  Those visits were fun and kind of magical as they got to know the city and introduced me to it over the next few years.

Tri-County was fascinating for its size, but even though my memories are vague, I don't recall the interior as being a particularly attractive one back then.  But malls were still coming into their own in those years, and as others got built, they stopped going up there so often in favor of more nearby ones like Eastgate.  I do remember on a summer visit borrowing their car to drive up and see IN COLD BLOOD (must have been a second run) at a single-screen theater across the road from Tri-County.

At some point in the late '70s or early '80s they took me to a large independent store near there (maybe to the north, across I-275?) with all kinds of goods and foodstuffs from around the world, called the International something or other.  Did you ever know that one?  It stuck in my mind, but I never got back there.

(Oh my.  And all she said was "Tri-County Mall"...)

Apropos of nothing...  a scan for your dancing and singing pleasure.

As some of you know, vocal scores were once sold in both hardcover and softcover editions, but I was always too cheap back in those student days to cough up the extra $3.00 or $3.50.  (I was buying during the $9.00 years.)  I'd never had THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, and it just happened that an early eBay find was a "hardcover" edition, which I bid on and won.  (Everything had to be "won" back then, chillun.  There was no Buy It Now.)  To my delight, it included that logo, and as you might be able to tell, the dark green binding has a nice pebbly texture.  The "boards" are actually flexible, with the leather (?) stretched over them.  It's like an old Modern Library "flex" edition.  So, not your typical hardcover.

I did a two-mile jog BEFORE she of the Evil Eye got here, and then went and had some bacon and eggs and tomatoes.  Then I put gas in the motor car, did some banking and now I'm back and hoping Grant will be here on time at 12:15.  Then after we're through I'll hopefully pick up some packages.  I also finessed the first part of the commentary and wrote and additional two things for it, so I'm moving right along on that and am five songs in now.

LOL, DR ChasSmith, sometimes that's all it takes!

I do remember Markets International.  The building is still there, but it's an insurance company or something.  We used to go there to eat in the international food court and we still use a lamp in our living room that we bought in one of the shops.

As for Tri-County, they've prettied up the interior, but the stores have become kind of junky.  I'm not much of a shopper, but Kenwood Towne Center is my mall of choice.

In other shopping news, we made a quick stop at Cincinnati Premium Outlets, a complex that opened almost 5 years ago just south of us, for one specific item.  It was so mobbed that Richard dropped me off and picked me up when I was finished.  Note to self:  if you need something at the outlet mall, go on a weekday.

Shailene Woodley who plays the lead Tris in the Divergent movie is also the lead in another very popular book to movie adaptation.  She is playing the lead in John Green's The Fault In our Stars. Ansel Elgort plays her brother in Divergent and her love interest in The Fault in our Stars.

Am I the only person who thinks this is gonna be super odd?  The movies will both be hugely popular. They are coming out within months of each other. I was shocked enough that Shailene would be cast as the lead of two super hot book to movie adaptations.  But to have her brother as her lover. I hope that they are both amazing actors.

Then went off to judge the barbecue competition about a half hour south of here. Got there in time to do chicken, followed by ribs.

Word is out on these events, and the would-be judges for brisket -- always the favorite in Texas because it's beef -- line up as soon as the ribs are cleared, even though that was not to have been judged for another 90 minutes. We didn't need to wait that long, so we left.

Lovely.  We are having a beautiful spring day.  We went to a nursery, walked in and were shocked to find almost nothing there.  The owners sold the property and are retiring.  When we moved here there were 3 nurseries and now there is only one left, which we did head over to before coming home.  Thank goodness there is one left and it is the largest of the three.

Then, around the time I graduated from the Kiddie table to the Grown-up table at Thanksgiving, I was invited to play the family gathering poker game.  Not being a very religious family, we even played poker-type games at Christmas too.  My grandmother was the luckiest lady I ever knew, but I did my fair share of winning.  We would play NO-PEAK BASEBALL, ACEY-DEUCY, and poker games with wild cards.  Some games wound up with big pots.  Some holiday gatherings I would have a nice little kitty (no, not the one pictured in my avatar) to take back with me, especially when I was in college.

As an adult nearing the top of the hill, I love card games.  I have tried to teach myself BRIDGE many times.  One of my co-workers back in NYC was a champion Bridge player who supplemented his income by winning tournaments.  One of the jobs I held, I worked for a private law firm in which the "old man" of the firm was a member of the social club that included Bob Guccione.  I think it was on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.  There they would play WHIST, which I was interested in since it is a precursor to BRIDGE.

I am also very interested in oracle cards, such as GUARDIAN ANGEL cards and the various TAROT decks.  After all the standard playing card deck is somehow related to tarot.  I'm also interested in Napoleon's oracle and (I think it's called) LeNormand.

I guess it would be safe to say that I like cards.  If anyone out there has any spare credit cards, I will accept those as well. ;)

The word of the day, NOETIC, is one of my favorite words as it can be used to describe metaphysics, or things that lay outside of what is considered to be the boundaries of accepted knowledge.  I've always been a seeker of knowledge and, as a result, have always enjoyed "In Search Of" and other things that some may term the "tin foil hat" crowd.  I think it is much more mature to be open to all possibilities.  As much as I may have learned in my life so far, there are many things that are still unknown.  Science does not explain everything since it is self-defined and is limited by even the most accurate measuring sticks mankind has ever devised.  By definition, these measuring sticks are imperfect because we are not perfect.

By all accounts, my disease was so far along last year, that I "should have" died.  That I have been cleared of all disease, where I had cancer in every single place, in every single organ, and in every single system in my body, is not just a testament to science.  The treatments I underwent were so harsh, I could have succumbed to that alone.  For whatever reason, it was not "my time" and I am here.  I must make use of this time that I have been afforded, no matter the day-to-day difficulties I have to deal with and overcome.

(I yield the floor and did not mean to soliloquize.)

Since I have the free trial of Netflix I sampled the first episode of Breaking Bad, which everyone and their mother has told me is the greatest show in the history of television.  Does that happen AFTER episode one?  The actors are good, certainly, but the style is not my favorite and I'm not sure I would want to watch an entire season of this story, let alone two.

When I was in and out of the hospital last year, I saw some episodes of "Breaking Bad".  Now, granted I was in the hospital, but after all what better "captive" audience with limited TV options, I tried to like the show, but it didn't click with me.  I also tried to "get" "The Walking Dead", but it just didn't happen.  I'm just so over zombies and meth-heads (maybe they're the same?).

On a happy note, a friend of mine stopped by today and brought me a 1946 first edition of Frank Tashlin's The Bear That Wasn't because she knows how much I like classic cartoons and Frank Tashlin's movies.  The string sewing the binding together is coming apart, so I'm wondering if I should have the book conserved.  Otherwise, there's no markings in the book and it wasn't a library copy.  (My copy is not the one depicted in the picture.)

Watching "The Guys." Sigourney Weaver is just too earnest and noble and stiff in this. Anthony LaPaglia is much better.

Did anyone see this off-Broadway?

That's a nice addition to the library.  I had heard of the book, but never read it, and now that I have, I love it!  Bruce, when I am financially able, do you think I should try to get my copy repaired, or would it be more expensive than the book is worth?  I don't have a jacketed copy.

It would be more than it's worth.  You can go to abebooks.com and search it - if it's really fraying, you may want to invest in a nicer copy with the dust jacket - hard to find in a great dust jacket - mine has some chips and tears but I wanted it because it was signed.  I just looked - there aren't any really nice copies in jacket.  A couple sound acceptable and rather like mine - it's not an expensive first to get in jacket - the most expensive copy is $170, but there are several for less than that.

Thanks, Bruce!  The book really lifted my spirits and it seems like one that I'd return to again and again.
