Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Johnny Carson and other things, and now it is time for you to post until the Tonight Show starring The Cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: INTERREGNUM!
-
Probably my favorite memory of Johnny Carson was THIS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eJnnEvaBIk) clip of Bernadette Peters singing "Making Love Alone." I remember recording that very episode when it was on! I still have the VHS tape somewhere in my garage...probably. Anyway, someone has put it on YouTube. Bernadette recorded the song on the first release of "Sondheim, Etc.," but it eventually was no longer available on the CD. I like this video performance more than the way she performs it on the CD.

Morning all.
That is all.

Tax season festivities continue. Sorry for my E&T-ness.
Skip went to see MOST HAPPY FELLA the other night and had a terrific time. That's our theater report.

Falling behind on my HHW, but glad to have a tax season.
-
I will ketchup. So much fun stuff happened yesterday, along with some sadness.

good morning to all

Dear Larry
I am sorry to hear about the passing of your friend
-
I always like the best of Carson shows
my favorite one is The Dragnet sketch with Jack Webb
http://youtu.be/cjquGpmgwOo (http://youtu.be/cjquGpmgwOo)
-
And the one where he almost gave a guest a heart attack.
The one with the woman who collected potato chips that look like animals, people etc. Carson took some potato chips from a bowl under his desk and ate them in front of her and she field her chest. He then showed her the bowl.

Good morning, all! I slept rather well and dreamed of another dear friend, Eugene Sher, who died from a heart attack in Los Angeles around 15 years ago. Actress Mary Testa and music copyist Don Oliver were also in the dream; it was strange.
So, this morning I've got a doctor's appointment and the GUYS & DOLLS dress rehearsal at Carnegie Hall.which I look forward to. I want to go back to bed. And I may.
-
Good morning, all.
It looks to be a fine day out there. And I looks forward to seeing me some DRs this evening.
-
Well, I just got lost in a bunch of Youtube clips, so I don't remember what we were talking about anymore!
-
seeing me some DRs this evening.
Have fun! I hope there will be a photo.

That has never happened to me. Ever. So I have to use my imagination to guess what that must be like. 8)

Condolences to DR ELMORE on the passing of his friend.
-
DR ELMORE if you see a Guys & Dolls program around somewhere, grab it for my display case.
-
And thanks for posting the picture of the MAMMA MIA group....I am behind the camera so I am not featured in said photo.
-
I loved MR BK's story of his encounter with Mr Johnny Carson.
I was not a regular watcher of his program...although I also remember him from his afternoon quiz program Who Do You Trust?
I remember an out take of him appearing in a sitcom as a footman announcing the arrival of guests at a royal party....he was supposed to say a name and introduce her as the Dowager Empress of China..... He kept saying: "Gertrude the Dowager, Empress of China...." And no one ever corrected him.
-
TOD
What BK said, and more. I don't even feel like trying.
A chapter of life as we knew it ended when Carson retired. Period. End of story. Amen, brother.
-
Good morning, all.

TOD:
I loved how different all of the talk show hosts were back in the day. Not just Johnny, but Merv ("Oooh, show us your lining") Griffin, Mike Douglas, Cavett, Letterman on a very weird morning show that ran one summer. Each one special in his own way, and each once catered to a slightly different audience.
But Johnny was the best. I loved Carnack, the soft shoe routine when the jokes started falling flat, Stump the Band and Carson's ability to seem genuinely amused with his guests, whether they were celebrities or the off-the-street people who did fascinating things.
There are many full episodes on YouTube, but here's a link to the full American Masters documentary BK was referring to:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BFmv7_Gy90
-
I loved those others, too, DR John G. Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Dick Cavett ... and later, I came to appreciate Tom Snyder. Yes, al different -- different times of day, different formats, etc. Together, they defined an age and a view onto the culture that we won't see again.

Most of the hosts mentioned seemed to care more about their guests than themselves....not so much today.....
I also - to a point - enjoyed Mr Steve Allen....his Man on the Street segments with Louis Nye and Don Knotts always made me laugh. I also liked his Soap Operas which cut to people in the audience as he told the story of a small town scandal....

Hi Kev,
Have a great Safe time.
Talk to you soon!

Goodbye for now!!!

DR elmore thank you for finding, and sharing, the photo. The stone wall made a nice backdrop.
-
From DR John:
Thanks for all the kind words on the story about Mom. The reporter made one little error that would matter to no one but her old children, ages 58, 55 and 51: My folks have been married for almost 59 years, not 51, as the reporter said. (As if legitimacy still mattered these days.
;D
I don't blame you for wanting to correct the information.
-
From DR Jennifer:
Do you have black tights that you could wear with it? Or dark nylons.
Excellent suggestion for another outing. I would like to wear it again.
-
From DR Ginny:
I don't know what possessed me to look at today's hometown obituaries, but that's when I learned of Alan's death. Even thought I dreaded telling DR Elmore, I'm glad he didn't receive the news alone and via email. I knew Alan as a student on the campus where my library career began, but had lost touch with him except through Larry.
Yes, much kinder coming from a friend who also knew him.

My health is good. My doctor is sending me to a colleague who specializes in sport and back injuries.
I am having a spot of lunch before heading to Carnegie Hall.

We have been informed that the name of the book has been changed from Barbecue Lovers' Guide to Texas to the simpler Barbecue Lovers' Texas. I like it.

Nice new title DR JOHN G
-
TOD:
I liked Johnny Carson, although I only watched on the rare occasion when he had a guest that was of interest.
Have not watched any of the other current talk show hosts enough to have much of an opinion, although I have seen each of them on other shows. Conan O'Brian always seemed creepy to me. David Letterman, I just never cared for.
If I had to pick a favorite talk show host it would be Ellen DeGeneres. I have seen her show only a few times, but it was always fun.

Thursday afternoon greetings! We've taken a walk over to 9th Ave. to do a little shopping and to pick up a little lunch. It's a gorgeous day in Manhattan and I'm looking forward to our walk up to 57th Street later.

And thanks for the bonus gifties, BK!
That just makes me want to chuck my two afternoon meetings and go home to see if the book arrived.
-
Picked up "Five, Six, Seven, Nate" the other day from the library. It's the sequel to Better Nate Than Ever, a YA novel about a kid who tries out for the chorus of a Broadway musical version of "E.T." And it's as charming as the first book.
I love the way that Nate and his best friend, Libby, use the name of flop musicals instead of saying curse words. A few so far have included Marilyn, Merrily We Roll Along and Flower Drum Song. (They're usually accompanied by an aside telling you about the flop and how many performances, etc.)

Greetings, all,
I know you understand my absence here for the last week or more. It was the long trip to Philly to lay Mom to rest. And honestly, it was all good. Never easy to say goodbye, but in the end, she had 87 great years, with love from kids and grandkids overflowing, and only a few weeks of real struggle at the end. That was the hard part. Knowing that she is where she needs to be for peace is a blessing. And I count myself so lucky to have had all of those wonderful years with her. Of course, she remains with me always.
Thank you again to everyone here for your kind words and prayers and good wishes. All is well. Mom would want me to dive back into doing what I love and into living fully, so I am doing just that. And this week's Kritzerland show is the perfect restart. It is such wonderfully fun material to play with. So thank you for that, BK! Perfect timing.
TOD:
Mom and I shared Johnny Carson nearly every night, as Dad worked early and was already in bed. I grew up with Johnny. Almost felt like he was my other Dad. So funny and fun and engaging. So real and interested and hilarious.
Too many memories of Johny's show to pinpoint one or two. But I do remember in his last year, when everyone who was anyone came back on to celebrate him. Even Letterman was on as a guest one night, and Johnny let him go on and practically do monologues for three whole segments, and it was one of the funnier times I'd ever remembered Dave being.
I also remember how much Johnny loved other brilliant people. This clip comes to mind - Johnny and Robin Williams, who had Johnny nearly on the floor with laughter that night.

Looking forward to seeing the HHW group tonight!
I'm excited for all of you who can be together and look forward to the photos.

Interesting, given today's topic of discussion, that Letterman is announcing his retirement after 32 years. It'll be in 2015.

You are welcome DR JANE.....it's a nice location. Clowes Hall was built in 1963 - and has been the home to concerts by both Judy Garland at the end of her career and Barbra Streisand at the beginning of her career (the curtain was not all the way closed when Ms Streisand began giving her conductor hell about how badly he had done his job....)
I have never been in ANY seat in the house when I could not hear every word from the stage.

-
Loved the book! Only one thing made me go "WHAT???!!!"
-
Interesting, given today's topic of discussion, that Letterman is announcing his retirement after 32 years. It'll be in 2015.
Thank the Lord! He's been riding on 3 wheels and fumes for the last umpteen years. When he started thinking of himself as a "serious journalist" and having "serious" discussions with the news hoi polloi, he became very self-important in his old, adled mind and forgot to be funny. I estimate his decreased in funniness once he transitioned over to CBS and slowly unincorporated bits he did at Late Night because it was considered NBC stuff.

My very first Blu Ray player arrived yesterday and I hope to get it hooked up by this weekend.
And my very first Blu Ray DVD is on its way from Amazon.com. KING KONG ESCAPES. :D

-
I've posted this before, but I will repeat again as it pertains to TOD:
I highly recommend the JOHNNY CARSON VAULT SERIES which I found over the holidays. At that time there were 3 DVDs that each contain 2 full-length shows with network broadcast commercials and 1 bit or 1 interview to fill out the time.
These are much, much better in my opinion than the box set that was released a few years back as these are representative of entire broadcasts and not just snippets. The good and the bad interviews are in here. While Carson's Classics are fun, it's even better when you have the entire context in which "weird, wild stuff" is discussed and you can take the "Slauson cutoff" in its proper place.

Yes I appreciate the RED GOLD gift....most useful

TOD:
Of the current roster of late night "chat" shows, I only find Craig Ferguson worthy of a look. Otherwise, there's no one really that interesting or capable of interviewing people.
Ellen doesn't qualify because she is an afternoon show and the time-slot has a totally different audience. If she were a night-time chat show, I would place her in the same bracket as Arsenio, not Carson.
Merv Griffin, as deep in the closet as he was, always seemed to be chatty, catty and gossipy. I always looked forward to Orson Welles and his appearances on the program. I remember that on one occasion, Orson told Merv that it was never considered manly in the early 1900s to wear a wristwatch. The bending of the wrist to look at the watch was, according to Orson, where the stereotype of the limp wrist originated. The only acceptable watch a "man" could "wear" was a pocket watch. I will never forget the dagger eyes that Merv shot at Orson and then tried to shrug it all off with a nervous titter. But, Merv's show was must-watch TV.
Merv's show was the very first TV show that I ever saw John Williams. I don't know if he had been on TV, but that's where I first saw him as an interviewee. Around that same time, 1977, Andre Previn was hosting a PBS series called "Previn and The Pittsburgh" in which he and the Pittsburgh Symphony would showcase various golden and silver age movie music. The series was great fun for me. Many years later I read that many in the music community did not like Previn's show because he was "too opinionated". I liked the show nonetheless and learned a great deal about many of the great composers for film, some of whom were still alive and appeared on Previn's show.
-
I also enjoyed Cavett. Both the reruns of his old ABC series and the later series he had on PBS, and something he did for the early HBO. Rick Moranis when he was with SCTV did some fantastic impressions of Cavett (and Griffin) for that matter. His skit in which Cavett interviews Cavett is very funny if you know Cavett that is.
-
seeing me some DRs this evening.
Have fun! I hope there will be a photo.
I thought you hoped there would be a potato.
-
Rick Moranis also had a very funny SCTV sketch in which he played Merv Griffin interviewing Steven Spielberg around the time CLOSE ENCOUNTERS had been released. The ultimate payoff was that they were all in the alien craft and accidentally took off into space. The CLOSE ENCOUNTERS theme then collided with a number of other movies like 2001. Very funny.
-
My condolences to DR elmore. Very sorry for your loss. May your friend's memory live on.

I liked his show, and Carson's when I stayed up late enough to watch it. Fortunately there have been many clips over the years to watch.
Steve Allen was the first talk show host I watched and still my favorite. I was always glad he left The Tonight Show to be on earlier when I could actually watch him.

Cool! In December of 1995, my forehead was on "Live with Regis and Kathy Lee" for about three frames. ;)
Also cool. Where was the rest of your head?
Hidden behind the person in front of me who won a prize. :P

And I am home from a long day but a very good one; the perfect antidote to the grief, sturm und drang of last night. The dress rehearsal of GUYS AND DOLLS was really wonderful: nicely directed, superbly acted by most of the cast, and accompanied by an excellent orchestra. I don't know who choreographed (no programs, DR JRand63) but it all worked so beautifully within the space. My one caveat was Megan Mullaley, who seemed to be commenting on Miss Adelaide rather than being the character. A claque of gay chorus boys across the aisle from me loved her. I wanted to.
As I was hobbling up the aisle in search of a seat, I ran smack into my former best friend who dropped me in January 2012. It was the first time I'd seen him since I went from his A to D list. He said, what happened to your leg, and as I walked past him I said, I'm crippled. That was the extent of conversation between me and someone I once regarded as family. I got to the back of the house and found a seat on the aisle. Shortly after that, Joshie found me and sat with me for the rehearsal.
Then I met our DR ChasSmith, and we went to a bar around the corner from Carnegie Hall; I had two gin and tonics and he had one Manhattan. We then joined DRs Kevin H, Ben, Ginny, Richard, and our E&T DR Jose ar he Brooklyn Diner for a lovely meal. And a lovely gathering it was.
I got home to find my copy of THE BOOK. BK, I loved the inscription and I agree about the key of E-flat and the Brass. Absolutely spot on!
-
DR elmore I'm glad you had Joshie and the HHW gathering of friends after your encounter.

'night

I am glad you provided that photo, DR George. I just checked the envelope that the book came in; I had missed the magnet! :P
I love the gifties, and am looking forward to starting to read this evening.

DR TCB - there can never be enough potatoes. :)

Thanks, SeeSaw, for posting the photo. Somehow I missed the fact that Ben had joined the group.

Well, we can see how many men it takes to escort Ginny out on the town. :D

A few months back I mentioned the shock of the sudden death of a friend of mine named Barbara Wolfe, who had been a special person on the restaurant and live music scene here in San Antonio. Turns out her husband, Steve Silbas, will not likely be with us much longer. Sad to say, but in the last few days, he's had several heart attacks and a series of strokes on top of problems stemming from a longtime need for a kidney transplant. He's not conscious and he's not responsive to any treatment.
-
What a shame, DR John G. :(

I just don't think he wanted to go on without her.

That's very sad.

John, I am so sorry to hear about your friend. He will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I understand that completely. I am sorry, DR JohnG.

Good evening. I survived the snow in Flagstaff.
-
I'm sorry about your friend, John. I hope if it is his time that he has a peaceful passing.

Elmore, I am glad you didn't let your brief encounter interrupt an otherwise enjoyable day.

Good evening. I survived the snow in Flagstaff.
Was it still there?
-
Yes, there was still snow on the ground.

The snow, I mean, not Flagstaff.

I knew that at some point I'd eventually run into him but since we are both Upper West Siders, I thought it would have happened by now. It did catch completely me by surprise, but i'm glad i kept my cool. I usually don't at such awkward moments.

We had a great time supping with DRs Elmore, Ben, ChasSmith, KevinH, and Jose. DR Elmore had come from a performance and everyone else was off to one. MOST HAPPY FELLA was glorious and we'd go to another ENCORES production in a minute. We had a nice intermission chat with DR ChasSmith, who I hope has made it home safely in the rain.
-
DR John G, I'm sorry to hear about your friend.
-
Had a great rehearsal, about which more in the notes, then a few of us went and had dinner, my first and only food of the day. Listening to an upcoming project right now.
-
And nothing could have made the evening better save for Jrand's lovely review of Red Gold - it made me very happy. Hoping others will take the time to do amazon reviews, too - they're very helpful.
Jrand can PM me to tell me what the "WHAT?" moment was.
-
One more.

-
Ginny, when do you head home?
-
And do take the time to read Jrand's review - lovely writing and no spoilers.
-
Funny to see one person in that haineshisway.com get-together photo, since he hasn't been around these here parts in, oh, two years, and probably wouldn't know anybody else in the photo were it not for the relationships developed here. :) He should try coming back for a while.
-
Page six? Really? Is everyone reading a new book?
-
I'm twirling a Red Dust keychain around on my right index finger.

I can grok that the day needs to end the same way it started:
{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
for all who need 'em!!!

Great picture! Is that Ginny's Richard in the back row next to the errant and truant Jose? If it is, I don't think that I've ever seen a picture of him with a clean shaven face. If it isn't Richard, I don't know who he is. :-\
But should I (if he isn't Richard)??
-
Well, I'll find out later, I'm sure. I must be off for home. I have to do laundry before it gets too late. I'm working concessions tomorrow night and have to have something nice to wear.
Be back later!
-
It is indeed Richard!
And no problem with the rain, DR Ginny. For a few minutes I thought it was going to get really annoying, as rain has a way of getting when you're driving, especially at night, but mostly it was either very light or not coming down at all.
-
This was a superb get-together, if'n I say so myself.
Enjoyed my first meal at Brooklyn Diner. The chicken pot pie was something that by all rights should keep me going through the end of the week. I am also very intrigued by the mac and cheese which DR Elmore said was also great, but what he didn't say was that it includes PASTRAMI. That's what I'm having next time.
-
DR Elmore and I discussed wrong notes over drinks, and then did the Wrong Note Rag whilst crossing 57th Street.
No, wait. Part of that isn't true. Let me sort it out and try again.
-
And THE MOST HAPPY FELLA was sublime. I'll say more than it tomorrow, because I'm starting to fade here. But I'm glad to hear DR Ginny say they loved their first Encores! experience, because it really is a very special thing. My seat in the mezzanine was surprisingly good, too, I must say.
-
Note to vixmom:
Using a coupon from the NYC parking website, I paid $25 for a $43 eight-hour stay in a large Icon garage on 53rd. Don't leave home without it.
-
Okay, that's it for me. Night, folks.
-
I had a great time at our get-together. It was so nice to finally meet DR Ginny and DH Richard.
-
Loved Guys and Dolls! Everyone was in great voice.
-
Well, it's past my bedtime! Goodnight!
