Title: POMEGRANATE DREAMS
Post by: bk on April 04, 2014, 12:03:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of pomegranates and were dreamy, and now it is time for you to post until the dreamy cows come home.

I saw Casa Valentina last night. It's Harvey Fierstein's new play about a group of men in 1962 who go up to a resort in the Catskills to live for weekends as transvestites. It's based on true events. The men are not gay and they are not drag queens. I do think one of them is questioning his gender identity but they all identify as heterosexual men who happen to enjoy dressing as women, like Eddie Izzard. There is discussion of "homosexuals" and how "we can't let them into our group" because they are "sick" and need help. It's a funny piece but it touches, especially in the second act, on very serious topics. I enjoyed it very much. It's a strong piece with some very good performances.

I'm glad George posted a picture of the magnet as I didn't realize there was one. The keychain was attach to the outside of the package. I pulled the book out not realizing the magnet was there. I depend on the magnets to keep my doctor appointment cards on my fridge.

I remember when I was at University. It was winter. I went to bed one late April evening. There was no snow and the weather was beautiful. I looked out of my dorm room window and saw the Mississippi River and thought "all is good" I woke up the next morning to inches of snow. I wanted to open my dorm room window and jump out from the 10th floor!

I attended two concerts yesterday and heard some amazing newly composed vocal music. Had a chance to chat with some of the young up-and-coming composers afterward.

There is so much amazing music going on in the Twin Cities, and I have been attending an average of 2 to 3 concerts per week. When I lived near NYC I certainly had the opportunity to hear much great music, but getting in and out of the city was such a hassle that I didn't always take advantage of the opportunities. Here, you can be home in 10 minutes. Well - when it isn't snowing.     :)

Good morning, all! I slept late today, and didn't want to get out of bed. I do have physical therapy at 12:45 and I must go. I may be down at the moment - I'm sure it's Alan's death - but my therapy sessions always perk me up and i could use that today.  I was lucky that I had the diversion yesterday with a great musical comedy and a lively dinner with friends.  Today I've got work to do to keep me occupied, and tomorrow, I've got work at Toyland. I'm glad to be busy.

I'm happy that everyone had a good time at either Encores! or Carnegie Hall. The two Loesser shows back to back for me only confirmed once again what a wonderful writer he was. I haven' t seen Jo Loesser in a couple of years, but i'm sure she's very pleased this week.

In the movie "The Prince and the Pauper" (the Errol Flynn version) one of the "princes" is asked what Ann Boleyn died of.  He said she died from eating too many pomegranates.  Of course, we know she died from separation anxiety when her head was severed from her body.  But, oh!  That Mark Twain!

Friday afternoon greetings from Greater Cincinnati International Airport, which is actually in Kentucky.  As some of you heard, Richard discovered shortly after we arrived in Philadelphia that he'd lost his car keys and I don't carry my keys when we travel.  We collected our luggage, had lunch, and he's at the car waiting for the AAA locksmith to arrive with new keys.  If I disappear abruptly, it's because he's called to tell me he's on his way to pick me up.

Meanwhile, I'm enjoying a nonfat vanilla latte at Starbucks and charging my phone and iPad.

Well, it's time for me to leave work and head back downtown.  I'm working concessions for Olympia Family Theater (http://olyft.org/)'s opening night performance of "Orphan Train (http://olyft.org/event-registration/?ee=111)."

Be back later!

I got caught in the rain today without an umbrella.  And it was pouring.

This never happens to me. I always see plenty of other people caught in the pouring rain. But I always bring my umbrella whenever it is supposed to rain.

Well I went to my niece's swim team practice. We got there at 4pm. And when we left at 6:45pm it was pouring. :(

Luckily we were parked fairly close to the door and we both had hoods. But still.

For anyone who doesn't remember, "Unforgettable" returns tonight for the second half of its season.
I really like this show. DR Jane do you still watch it?

We only watched the first episode.  I didn't even know it was still on.

I think you would like it. They switched things up this year.  This is the first episode of the 2nd half of the season.

I don't really yak on Facebook - I go there to drum up people for our shows and the signing - but this crap shows up on my newsfeed and I just have to respond. :)

Keith and I worked with her at the Bruin Theater.  I ran into recently on FB on another Hami co-worker's page.  I didn't recognize her name until they began talking about the Bruin.

Possibly but I doubt Keith will want to revisit it.  Maybe we can catch the summer re-runs.

I knew someone would come out of the woodwork and tell me that my signing date is a huge conflict with another event - probably should have left it on Passover, which would have finished at three and in plenty of time for people to get where they were going.  Too late now - April 12th?  The LA Times Festival of Books.  BRILLIANT!  Not that anyone who's coming to the signing would go to the LA Times Festival of Books, so it's not really going to impact me at all.

Started watching an old noir called Illegal with Edward G. Robinson, Jayne Mansfield, Hugh Marlowe, Ellen Corby and a very young DeForest Kelly. Fun Max Steiner score.

I would be reading a book if it was on my Nook.  The timing would be perfect as I have nothing to read at the moment.

In other news  Red Gold came in the mail yesterday, with a lovely inscription and  with a sparkling  key chain  however if there was a magnet  I am afraid I never saw it and it was discarded with the packaging  :(

If you are sending out any more magnets , Bruce, you may want to put them inside the front cover  :)

I knew you'd love that about the twin cities

I was thrilled to wake up to snow.  This is the best kind of snow, heavy and wet.  It melts and sinks into the ground rather than running off if it was rain. We need moisture so badly Plus it was just plain beautiful

Have the beginnings of either a nasty cold and/or allergies, and haven't been feeling very good today. Did make a start on RED GOLD, however. I'm afraid I'm not as speedy a reader as DR Jrand63.

And I am home from TRANSPORT and some after-shw socializing with the MD John Bell, his reed player Jeremy Clayton and the orchestrator, my Joshie. We had some drinks and lovely visit.  The show was problematic but the score was quite lovely.

I watched a documentary about Marilyn Monroe in Manhattan, purportedly about the Kennedy connection - anything but - terrible and amateur.  Then I watched a documentary about TWA Flight 800 - not very well done and a little too heavy-handed, but very interesting and it clearly was one of the most botched "investigations" of all time - how this country got away with that is horrifying.  Then I watched All the King's Men.

I was going to watch the latest episode of "Glee" and record it to my DVD burner so that I can make a DVD for my friend, Margo, but just as I started the episode, I realized that my DVR didn't record last week's episode!  I don't know what happened, but fortunately, it's on OnDemand.

So, I watched the last episode that featured McKinley High School (no other spoilers here) and now am watching this week's episode.  From now until the end of the season, all the episodes will only be with the gang in NYC.

They're nearing the end of the fifth season, but what's interesting is that even though the Glee club has been disbanded at the high school, there is still supposed to be a sixth season.  What are they going to do next season?

I've watched the two episodes of "Glee" and one half-hour episode of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" with special guest, Darren Criss, one of the stars of "Glee."  What a coinkydink!
