Well, you've read the notes, the notes were perfection, and now it is time for you to post until the perfect cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: OMPHALOSKEPSIS!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
-
I get to sleep in today! I love that. :) I will probably go into work for a few hours to make up some time, but then I'm off to my parents' house for dinner. My sister and niece and my sister's boyfriend will be there too, so it'll be a full family affair.
-
And now, to bed!
Sleep well, everyone.
-
I agree - that video clip in the notes IS perfection. :) The likes of which we do not see in the movies anymore.
-
You should really read this reminiscence from one of the participants (Martin Moran) in the recent concert revival of Titanic:
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/06/theater/the-actor-martin-moran-reminisces-about-a-titanic-revival.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0
Lovely musing on the collaboration and transience of theatre.

Saturday is a work day....oh well.
-
Yes that clip is perfection....except for the inserts of Eric Blore's reactions...... He's not as funny as the director thinks he is....at least to me. Helen Broderick and Victor Moore reprising the dance is also perfection!
-
Hmmmm.....perfection....
Books: Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury
Movies: The Heiress, Some Like It Hot
Television: I Love Lucy - LA At Last!, Vitameatavegemin, Equal Rights, Lucy Learns to Drive, Lucy & John Wayne, Lucy Raises Tulips, AND Ricky Needs An Agent (I went out to MGM today and got you fired!)
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Off to work.
-
Good morning, all.
Slept in just a little, but I'll take it when I can get it.
Right now, I'm taking in some much needed coffee.
-

Right! This is interesting, because I might well have never noticed it, had I just been watching Swing Time right out of the blue. But having just that description of the scene, I'm LOOKING for those two inserts, and they look clumsy and seem completely gratuitous.
-
BK,
I can't believe that you've never seen ALL THE KING'S MEN before.
It's one my all-time favorites and one of the very best movies about American politics. Broderick Crawford is terrific.
In a typical dumb Hollywood move, they remade it a few years ago with Sean Penn, and it was the biggest turkey of the year.
-
Good morning!

I walked to City Center early afternoon yesterday and got a great ticket for The Most Happy Fella. I walked around a bit (not too pleasant in the rain) and when I got to my hotel and looked at my cellphone I saw that there was a voicemail. It was from City Center, asking if I'd bought a ticket. First, I was wondering how they had my phone number but then figured they had it on file and matched it against the name on my credit card. Anyway, the guy said that the ticket seller had made some kind of mistake and that the barcode on my ticket wouldn't work so I needed to pick up a new ticket. When I had first seen the voicemail I thought they were going to say that I had been sold a ticket that was meant for someone else, so i was relieved!
-
Loved The Most Happy Fella. I had seen the revival with the two pianos but didn't really remember much about the show. I was amazed at Shuler Hensley, who plays Tony. Laura Benanti was fantastic, as was Heidi Blickenstaff (sp?). Cheyenne Jackson made the most of a small role.
-
Overheard as I was walking down W. 55th St after the show--"well, the only ones I could understand were the blonde and the cowboy."
-
Great clip, BK!

Good morning, all.

Oh! Forgot to post a few observations about FELLA yesterday!
It was sublime. I think I could live at Encores!
I, too, had only previously seen the Goodspeed two-piano production (at the Booth).
Early in the first act I thought Hensley was having trouble with a few of his high notes, but that impression lessened and he sang beautifully, eventually blowing us away with "Momma, Momma". I also wasn't bothered by his not-so-advanced age. He had a nice rough-hewn look that made it all work for me. Laura Benanti was simply to die for, and for my money, the rest of the cast was spot on. I'm generally a dunce when it comes to dance, but I find myself appreciating it more and more as time goes on, and I found the choreography in this and LITTLE ME thrilling.
But oh, the orchestra. Could Mr. Rob Berman please just stop what he's doing and record every show for posterity--like, right now? Thanks in advance. He makes it all look so easy, and what an incredible group of musicians. From my seat, which was surprisingly nice (I remembered to bring theater glasses along, which helped immensely), I could really watch them, the only thing just out of sight being the celesta. I was of course focused on the cast and on Mr. Conductor, but a first for me this time was suddenly locking in on the harpist, whose name I now know, and will never forget, is Susan Jolles. Of all the things to get riveted on in the orchestra, it was her this time. I was amazed at the coverage of the part -- she almost never gets to rest in this one (I suppose I'd find that to be the same in many other shows of the period) -- but once she got my attention I couldn't let it go.
Now I forget what else I was going to say! :)
-
Good Morning All:
Glad you enjoyed the show Kevin!

I think Francis Ford Coppola (Finian's Rainbow) and Bob Fosse are to blame for the sloppy, ADHD approach to editing musical numbers on movies nowadays.
-
I got to sleep in today-- that was certainly a good start on perfection.
-
Good morning, all! I wasn't in bed before 1:15, and I slept late; I'll go to Toyland tomorrow. I will wander over to City Center later in the afternoon. I want t hear the talkback, which I'll do from backstage, and then I'll meet Rob Berman ad his parents after.
DR ChasSmith, I cannot tell you how much I love Rob Berman, who is not only one of the best conductors I've ever been privileged to work with but one of the friendliest and easy-going. Orchestras love him. His study before hand is intense and he has no time for small talk at rehearsals because he's completely focused on the job. I loved working with him on ROBERTA, and, with my infirmity at the time, I could not have survived getting to Dublin and back without him on my right side and Patrick on my left. And speaking of Patrick, he was wonderful in TRANSPORT. I hadn't seen him since we recorded ROBERTA in Feb., so it was nice to see him after the show.
And harpist Susan Jolles? One of the best and sharp as a tack. If she missing something in rehearsal, it's only because she's making notes in her score about a tuning or a concern. I walked out of the first MOST HAPPY FELLA orchestra reading with her, and she was off to the Met to play WOZZECK that evening.
I have eork to do before I head out.
-
DR George, I'm happy to hear the company has a lease on a space.
-
!! !! Page 2 !! !!
-
Thanks for reminder, DR Elmore. Missing this WOZZECK is a sin of the first order. I shall now go and off myself. Nice knowing all of you. :)
-
I'm up, barely. She of the Evil Eye will be here in ten minutes.
-
Book in the mailbox today!
All parts present and accounted for! :) A fine presentation, BK.
-
I really doubt that anyone here would slip up, but it would be nice to think that there will be NO SPOILERS POSTED on the HHW discussion board.....! ;)
-
At least for a while. Or maybe we keep to that at all times?
-
DR George I'm glad you enjoyed the show. I find the subject and stories very interesting.
-
Keith is such a riot. Friends have asked what we like to eat and drink when we stay with them. He has sent back a ridiculous list of specialty drinks and menu. I walked in while he was wrapping up the note with "Please feel free to include hazelnuts and brazil nuts in any food you serve since Jane is highly allergic to them. Always fun to watch her swell-up and gag!"
-
Good Afternoon to all.
-
I started cooking dinner for my guests. I thought I would surprise them with a Brazilian meal since one of them is from there. I have attempted to make coconut and salmon soup and Brazilian Curry Chicken. And a traditional desert which I bought. (Flan) The main dish is in the crock pot and the soup has been started and will be completed when it becomes closer to dinner time.

Here is the trailer

Time Out Best Actress Award-winner Claire Skinner will also star alongside celebrated New York stage actor Terry Beaver and Academy Award-winning actress Estelle Parsons.

Saturday afternoon greetings! A little after 10 this morning Richard dropped me off at the local Miami campus to attend the first half of the Let Imagination Bloom luncheon and fundraiser for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. He went to pick up our mail, cleaned up, and picked me up at noon. We gathered with extended family at Spring Grove Cemetery for the internment of Uncle George AND his son-in-law's brother who had died earlier in the year. Fr. Richard offered to assist the officiant and was able to read the committal liturgy for his uncle. We then had lunch with Rob and Mary Linda and I've now crashed at home.
-
well I have been on the go all day
-
went to church at 8:30 AM and organized the putting together of kits to hand out to NYC homeless tomorrow
-
The washup kits had soap, washcloth, toothbrushes, toothpaste , shampoo , conditioner, a comb and a pair of socks.
The food kit had a sandwich, a bag of chips or pretzels, a hard-boiled egg, salt and pepper,a clementine and some candy
we made about 250 of each kit and have about another 75 sandwiches to hand out
-
we were done about noon and then I set up the communion for the chapel and the main sanctuary. By then it was nearly 1 and I had a 2 pm surprise baby shower
-
so you can imagine my joy when I tried to start my car and was greeted with the obvious signs of a dead battery
-
I just went to the facebook site for West LA and Bruce is there correcting memories ;) I'm still chuckling.
-
I called AAA and fortunately they came right away --- instead of going right home I went directly to the auto store whee I was pleased to see a young member of tghe congregation behind the register - he is the manager there. I bought new battery and he gave me a 20% discount (she was my preschool teacher and still knows my name! He explained to the coworker when he raised his eyebrows at my getting the employee discount) installed my battery while I hastily wrapped the shower present in the back of the car. I was home by 1:40 , changed and got to the shower exacatly on time at 2 PM
-
so you can imagine my joy when I tried to start my car and was greeted with the obvious signs of a dead battery
Yes! Yes I can! :( ::)
-
DR Vixmom you have left us with a dead battery. Did you get it charged or have to replace it?
-
the shower was very nice, the guest of honor suitably surprised and the baby to be well supplied with clothes, toys, books, diapers, car seat, seing, stroller and other useful baby stuff
-
I was too tired to stay for the full shower so when a pause in the gift opening was announced, in order to serve cake, I made my exit
-
DR Vixmom you have left us with a dead battery. Did you get it charged or have to replace it?
2nd to last post on page 2 :)
-
DR Vixmom you have left us with a dead battery. Did you get it charged or have to replace it?
yes
-
I had it charged and then thought it wise to replace it - I was on year 4 of a 3 year battery
-
LOL I wondered how you could respond yes to both options.
-
Last time I had the oil changed in my car they told me the battery was getting low so I replaced it.
-
DR George, I'm happy to hear the company has a lease on a space.
Thanks, Larry! TAO is starting a new era. :)
-
DR George I'm glad you enjoyed the show. I find the subject and stories very interesting.
It was. A co-worker is in the show and I spoke with her afterward. She said that the play "Orphan Train" deals mostly with the children and had little information/scenes with the adults who did it all. They found another play that dealt mostly with the adults' stories and they combined them. She also said that they had to pay the royalties on BOTH shows...but they were able to do it. They combined it all quite well.
-
Well, I must be off. I didn't go to work today, but I need to run a few errands before I go to my parents' house.
Have a good rest of the day, all!
-
That is interesting-nice you got a bit more info on the background of the combined plays.

Now I know why I didn't care for the dance numbers in CHICAGO. Thank you for explaining Bruce. Still, even with proper editing they weren't Ginger and Fred ;)
-
Youtube is taking way to long to load for me to watch videos today.
-
Someone has to correct all those faulty memories :) It's amazing what people misremember. Some guy said he saw a movie called Light in the Forest starring Carol Lynley. I had to tell him it was Light in the Piazza starring Yvette Mimieux.
-
I'm just hornswoggled that no one but Jrand, Kate, and now singdaw have started the book. HORNSWOGGLED, do you hear me? We authors need people to read the book when it arrives - we just are needy that way and everyone should just understand that and get to it. It's SHORT.
-
The stumble-through went great - only a few fumfers here and there, but nothing major at all. I gave a few notes after, and then everyone left. And I'll be on my way to supper in about fifteen minutes.
-
The new Richard M. Sherman/BK song went over really well.
-
Page three? Really?
-
I think that is most unseemly.
-
And I am home from Encores! I got there at 4:30, caught the last scene, and stayed for the talkback. I got a big hug and kiss from Jo Loesser, whom I love. She was ecstatic over the production and so enthusiastic about everything. On the way out, we planned a luncheon date.
Then I met Rob's parents and he invited me to join them for dinner at the Trattoria Dell'Arte.
http://www.trattoriadellarte.com
The meal was fantastic. I had the most wonderful lobster salad with mozzarella and tomatoes, and the Bermans are such a fantastic and supportive family. I adore them. I want to slip them into my coat pocket and bring them home with me to be my parents. Rob is very lucky to have such a fantastic pair. I told them all about the Dublin recording, we gossiped about our favorite BBC shows, the Encores! production. It was quite lovely. I walked Rob back to City Center and caught a taxi home. I understand I got an acknowledgement in the Playbill. That wasn't necessary at all.
So, I think I'll go back tomorrow night and watch the whole show from backstage, then go to the party. It should be a lot of fun.
-

LOL
He kind of had it right ;)
-
DR Elmore, I'm so glad you had a nice afternoon/evening with the Bermans!

DR elmore reading about your day made me happy.

I shall now be on my way to supper and I do hope we have some frenzies whilst I'm gone.

I forgot to mention to DR Ginny during intermission that I caught DR Elmore's name in the Thanks section. Also, painfully obviously, forgot to mention it to DR Elmore himself right here, too! :o

I had thought I wouldn't be able to sit down with the book till at least Sunday evening, but I'm going to stop what I'm doing in a little while and get into it tonight. I've been keyboard-programming HAIRSPRAY, and it ain't pretty, and I'm about at the point where the rest of the evening needs to be relaxing. I'll finish one just one more song...

Congratulations to Elmore on his Playbill mention! One more for the CV!

Started watching Shoah. I'm going to have to take this one in small doses, but it is powerful.
-
I'm going to prepare for bed and watch a DVD. I have a long day tomorrow.
As for RED GOLD, I won't get to it for a couple of weeks; I've got a choral arrangement for Cincinnati to finish up followed by Encores! prep for IRMA LA DOUCE by April 15. I've got to deal as well with the bathroom ceiling.

The OMPHALOSKEPSIS family, I believe, opened the first Greek cafe in Tacoma.

No more Shoah for tonight. Instead, it's White Zombie, the first zombie movie with Bela Lugosi and a lot of wonderfully creepy images. Creaky movie, but it is unexpectedly effective on occasion.
