Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of 44, and now it is time for you to post until the 44 cows come home.

Good morning, all! My mind is still asleep but I am moving about, I'm dressed and the bed is made, two huge accomplishments achieved. After my huge schedule debacle on Friday, i cannot miss therapy today.  Before I go, I need to call the pharmacy and order this month's meds so I can pick them up when therapy ends.

Good news about last night's show and sad news about Mickey Rooney; in 1991, after we lost Barney Hughes for the Toymaker in the Huston Grand Opera production of BABES IN TOYLAND, we were looking at other actors, and Mickey Rooney campaigned really hard for the role. The opera did not want him; they said it would become "All about Rooney" and not BABES IN TOYLAND.  We went with Eddie Bracken, who was wonderful, but a side of me regrets missing a chance to work with Mickey Rooney.

sorry to hear about Mickey Rooney. One of the last of Hollywood's golden era.

They never did give a Kennedy Center honor which was a crime.

I've read eleven chapters, but will probably find I have to reread that last one because I know my eyes were not staying open towards the end of it.  The story is wonderful, and normally, I would have read the book in two evenings, period, but activities of the past few days have denied me that.  So, another night, maybe two.  (I am not proud of that!)   :)

TOD:

Since I have no children of my own ( that I know of -  :)  ), it would not be appropriate for me to say.

However, I have seen enough of parents nowadays not controlling their children in public spaces that I know what I would not do, were I raising children of my own.
And parents tolerating disrespectful behavior which would not have been tolerated back in the years that I was being raised.

Get off my lawn, you kid, you!

These past few weeks of getting more familiar with MHF, in addition to hearing about the Carnegie Hall G&D, have inspired me to learn a lot more about Frank Loesser.  I had a perfect copy of Susan Loesser's book which I'd sort of fast-read through some years ago, so I went to pull it off the shelf and....and....it's gone!  What the HELL.  No idea what I did with it.  Must have loaned it to someone.  Glad it wasn't something hard to replace.  Back to Amazon...

I see there's a book in the Yale Broadway Masters Series.  Can DR Elmore or any other of y'all musical theater experts recommend that or any other?

It seemed to be a sell out house last night. I was in the mezzanine and a tall person was sitting in front of me for the first act but I think the man next to me decided to ask his smaller girlfriend/wife to switch seats (the man next to me was tall also) so that I could see without leaning to the left or right (the tall man in front was a head bobber). I thanked him (the tall man next to me) for saying something to them. It would have been impossible to move to another seat because I looked around and there were no empty seats anywhere in the mezzanine.

Outside of Robert Kimball's COMPLETE LYRICS OF FRANK LOESSER, I can only think of Susan's book and the Yale one.  Susan's book is a nice memoir and I have little memory now of the Yale one. It's at Toyland and i haven't looked at it in several years.

Speaking of things Loesser, I guess I would be a little remiss if I didn't mention that Frank's brother Arthur was one of my piano teachers.  Just for a little more than a year, because my first year at Cleveland Institute of Music was 1967-68 and he passed away on January 5, 1969 at age 74.  He was a very sweet man with a very polished, controlled sound on the piano, and he specialized in Bach keyboard works and cantatas.  By the time of his death my interest was already drifting away from being any kind of a concert pianist, but those months were very special because of him.

TOD:

Today's parents don't seem to be teaching their kids "responsibility" and the consequences of their actions.

A neighbor's kid (18 years old) was given a new car for his birthday,  Within a month, he had totaled it while drag racing on a public street.  (Thankfully he wasn't hurt.)  Last week, the father bought him another new car.

DR Jane, I would say that putting my hand over my niece's mouth helped more than asking her if she would like me to spoil a movie for her. :)

Actually she did say that she would not like it.  For the most part I didn't mind if she told me a thing or two. IT's just a few times she wanted to go into greater detail and I just wanted to be surprised.

My views on parenting:  I'm glad I'm not one.

With Mickey Rooney gone, I think the last star alive of that magnitude from Hollywood's Golden Age is Olivia De Havilland, still hanging in at 98.

I had -- not one, but TWO -- totally separate -- crazy dreams from reading RED GOLD last night!

Woke up after the first one at three in the morning when I had to get up to answer nature's call.  The second was before waking up this morning.  In the first, the last chapter I'd started reading before falling asleep was employing the type of device BK used in WRITER'S BLOCK.  The later dreams embellished on that and added a lot of "stuff" of my own.  Absolutely zany.  These were intense, the type of dream that, once you're awake, you have to check on things to make sure it WAS all a dream.  And I checked chapter eleven this morning, just to be sure.

Luise Rainer is also still around.

And, although they didn't come around until the mid-1940s, we still have Kirk Douglas and Lauren Bacall.

TOD - I am appalled at the parents who ventured on the around-the-world sailing adventure with their very young children.  It's one thing for 2 adults to attempt something so risky, but taking toddlers along is just plain irresponsible.  I think one of the biggest parenting mistakes is taking children places they're too young to appreciate, which is why our DS Rob didn't have a Disney experience until he was almost 11 and didn't visit Washington, DC and New York City until he was almost 14.

Today's topic is due to something that showed up on my newsfeed from dear reader Ann, who posted an article and asked for comments - I found the article to be everything that's wrong with parenting today - the stupidity of the article is beyond believe and it's why we've come to what we've come to.  Here is a link to it:

http://naturalparentsnetwork.com/6-ways-to-gently-respond-to-a-tantrum/

And here was my comment:

I think this kind of parenting is what has caused a generation of confused, entitled, we can do anything we want because it's okay kids the likes of which has NEVER been seen before. Yes, let's all just coddle our children no matter how they behave. Why don't we just take this to an extreme, say the kid throws a tantrum, gets a knife and tries to stab someone - after all, "I love you" "everything's okay" touchy-feely stuff always works for bad behavior. It teaches the child nothing other than they will know they can get away with and do anything because it's "okay" with the folks. I don't think so. As a fellow parent, I am glad to have presented my thoughts. And I'm not talking about kids who have real problems - that's something wholly other. I'm talking about typical childish tantrums. Oh, and it's not just kids anymore - the kids who were raised like this still throw tantrums well into their teen and adult years because they learned their lessons oh so well.

In one particular interview Bracken said that a lot of his scenes were cut out of SUMMER STOCK and THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK because he was "too funny" in them......

Page Three Allison Hayes Dance.

Miss Allison's first career path was as a concert pianist.  She was scored highly at Julliard in her junior year of high school, and gave several concerts with the American Symphony Orchestra in her senior year.

Her talent for the 1949 Miss America Contest was playing some of her favorite Edward MacDowell piano compositions.

Then her career took a different turn.

JRand, that photo reminds me of this noir with Jayne Mansfield that I saw the other night. She played a pianist and singer in the movie. At one point, a crime boss takes a look at her profile and says something like, "Yeah, her whole life is devoted to (pause) music."

I practically sprayed the water I was drinking.

Happy Monday, all!

I'm counting this as my first day off from everything, since I left for Philly a couple of week ago. But the madness was capped off perfectly by last night's wonderfully fun Kritzerland show.  Everything about it was tops!

And I have to thank BK once again for giving me the most deliciously funny material to sing. I can't tell you, BK, how many people raved about the Sweeney "What If" after the show. And of course, the Mr. Carp number has been a favorite of mine for a long time, but one I'd never gotten to sing until now.

So, if all goes well today, I may just impersonate a stalk of broccoli. Or maybe a cumquat. Or in BK's terms, so much fish.

Have a wonderful start to the week everyone.  :D

It is currently 56F. And you would laugh if you saw what people were wearing outside.

I wore shoes for the first time this year outside.

There are people wearing t-shirts. Because this temp feels so unbelievably warm. The crazy thing is that there are still piles of snow everywhere. I looked at the bike path. It is clear. But beside it are boulders of snow. Basically the path is clear but all around it is packed with snow. Should be weird.

I went to vote today and there were three people behind the table. One was politely rude. It's when you're rude but you do it with a smile.  IT was very bizarre. But I suppose it must be frustrating for her to be manning a booth in a largely English area where few people are voting for her party.

There was a guy voting at her station. But nobody at her table. The other two people smiled implying I should walk forward. But she was like "stop!". And then usually when they ask for your name you just hand them your driver's license. But she was like, "no i want you to say your name and address out loud. I want to hear it".

Re: the parenting article.

I think in the case that was described it really doesn't matter if she handled it the way she did. She was at home eating breakfast not disturbing anyone else.  I don't know that my nieces have ever had tantrums in public. I think my older niece (now 8) used to have a few at home where she would just get super upset about something and then cry. I think my sister just sent her to her room until she could calm down and behave properly.

I think when you are out in public and disturbing other people then you can't just let the kid scream and cry unless you separate them from the other people.

I think it also depends on the child. If they are crying about something every other day then something needs to be done.

Did you ever read his wonderful book?

DR ELMORE....they thought Rooney would make it all about Rooney...and then they got Eddie Bracken.....poking around in the same barrel in my opinion.

In one particular interview Bracken said that a lot of his scenes were cut out of SUMMER STOCK and THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK because he was "too funny" in them......

Well, actually, I found Eddie Bracken completely the opposite of an egomaniac. He had been a favorite Captain Andy for Huston in their SHOW BOAT. I thought he was very charming and kind, not at all egocentric. I had a good time with him.

I read parts of it back in the day.  Bought it when he played a concert in Fort Lauderdale the year before.  He inscribed it, and in later years the book got water-damaged, but that page was fine and I saved it.  I should replace it because I'd appreciate reading it infinitely more now.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the massacre in Rwanda.

A few years back, the hero of the story, Hotel Rwanda, Paul Rusesabagina, moved from Belgium to a town up the road from here in the Hill Country. It seems that there are people who still want him dead for what he did in protecting people and for speaking out about it.

That whole encounter just sounds very weird. :-\

Then, again, DR JRand63, maybe he had developed some humility. He was very good in SHOW BOAT, and I liked working with him.  The Huston experience was so unpleasant that the actors, who were unaware of all the backstage ugliness, were such a relief.

Fortunately I never had to deal with a full blown temper tantrum in a public place where I had to pick up a child and leave.  I did have to deal with one in Toys R Us.  Keith was embarrassed and left me to deal with it ;D  I did not give in and I did not coddle.  I felt really good when an older gentleman walked up and complimented how I handled it.   It is extremely difficult to not give in to shut the kid up when people are staring at you.

Children who grow up not getting away with that kind of behavior begin to notice when their piers act up and will criticize their friends and the parent's, at least mine did as we walked away. :)

But isn't a cumquat a fruit?

It is currently 56F. And you would laugh if you saw what people were wearing outside.

I wore shoes for the first time this year outside.

There are people wearing t-shirts. Because this temp feels so unbelievably warm. The crazy thing is that there are still piles of snow everywhere. I looked at the bike path. It is clear. But beside it are boulders of snow. Basically the path is clear but all around it is packed with snow. Should be weird.

Boulders of snow?  I would hate to be outside in one of your snow storms!

Back from New York.

I saw Bullets over Broadway on Saturday.  They had rush seats for $37 (only for the previews).  The ticket was marked "partial view" but it was really a pretty good seat, especially for that price.  I just couldn't see some action on the left side.   I enjoyed the show but wouldn't say it's one of my favorites.  The actors were all great.  Love Karen Ziemba in anything she does!

Yesterday I saw Lyrics and Lyricists at 92 St Y.  The songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein were featured.  What a great show!  The singers were Jonathan Groff, Mandy Gonzalez, Phillipa Soo , Rebecca Luker and Lewis Cleale.  They were all great but Ms. Luker and Mr. Cleale were just fantastic.  I especially loved Lewis's "Soliloquy" from Carousel and his duet with Rebecca of "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful."  When Rebecca sang her verse she didn't sing it as originally written (Do YOU love ME because I'm beautiful..) .  She sang "Do I Love YOU because you're beautiful" just as Lewis did.   The cast did songs from South Pacific but the songs written for the male characters were sung by the female ones and vice versa.   Mr. Groff sang "Wonderful Guy" and Ms. Luker sang "This Nearly Was Mine."     The show ended with the entire cast singing "Edelweiss" acapella.   What a great show!

Kevin, the National Enquirer says that Streisand is getting a divorce.  Is this possible??

They've had several articles saying that.  I don't think it's true.

Speaking of Barbra, last night I saw her sister, Roslyn Kind, at 54 Below.  She put on a great show--she sang mostly new material, including "The Fool on the Hill," "I Can Cook Too," along with "All that Jazz" and "Pure Imagination."   Before she sang "All that Jazz" she wondered why she's never been asked to do Chicago, the Musical.   She said if anyone knows the producers, the Weisslers, please let them know she's interested.  Hmm, if I only knew someone associated with that show.

Yes, and they've been photographed together very recently.

This day has completely gotten away from me - how did that happen?  Downloading the second batch.  I'll post a bunch of these in the notes, of course.  But here's our very own Robert Yacko bringing down the house as an appetizer - this is the first time we've ever done the complete version of this - in What If we only did two verses then went somewhere else.  It really works on its own, I think, and if I were to do What If again that's what I'd do.

And just so you don't have to wait - here I am premiering the new song I wrote with the amazing Richard M. Sherman.  Shockingly, no one seems to be viewing any of these on Facebook - they must be falling off the news feeds quickly.  And I'm jiggy with that.

I've been on the phone for 90 minutes with Rob Berman, planning three lunchtime concerts he will be doing at Trinity Church in the Wall Street area for May 15 (Lehar: The Merry Widow), 22 (Kern: Oh, Boy!), and 29 (Gershwin: Primrose). We discussed what numbers, what singers, etc. I hope it's a huge success and they book him for next year!

And now it's time to chill out.

So, DR Elmore, now that Most Happy Fella is history, are you willing talk about your directorial quibble?  And, what can you tell us about the young man who played the doctor?  I liked his voice.

Fantastic turn of events in the Quebec election. The Liberal is in with a majority government. Triumphing over the separatist party. The Zenophobe leader of the party lost her own seat. She will have to resign as leader. I've been trying to watch live broadcasts but the channels I think are too busy to get the news

I wish i could have seen THE MOST HAPPY FELLA AT City Center.  I was only ever in the lobby, never saw a show there.  Also, it would have been wonderful to see Cheyenne, of course, but it would have given me a chance to see if Bradley Dean is as handsome as his resume photo.

Bradley's in this list of photos from last night.

PARENTS, WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH PARENTS TODAY?
Helicopter parents.  The ones who hover over a child's every blink, sneeze and hurt feeling, and never let them get their knees skinned.
Parents that don't teach children manners, social skills, a respect for what came before them.
Parents that put their kids on pedestals as if their children are born winners, receiving trophies for just "participating" instead of learning the value of competing, winning AND losing.  Disappointment is not allowed by overcheerleading parents.  It does kids no favors to grow up with a misguided idea that they are brilliant at everything. Some people are more gifted than others.  Some will have more opportunities than others.   Some will achieve great things, but it is not a given.
Parents have forgotten to teach the value of hard work (not just academically) to achieve a dream.
Parents who don't take the time to educate children about the important things in life, most of which you will never learn in school.
