Well, you've read the notes, the notes were signed, and now it is time for you to post until the signed cows come home.

Today, I have to get up early to help clear out the storage unit that Theater Artists Olympia (TAO) has been renting for many years.  We can finally stop paying every month for the storage.  TAO's new performing space, The Midnight Sun, has a little storage, and several people have offered to store stuff in their own garages.  We can also rent a U-Haul van from the storage place, so that'll be VERY convenient.

See you at the signing with the CAKE EATERS.  My most memorable signing was 1) getting Sterling Holloway to sign his album, not book.  2) Jamie lee Curtis signing my kids' books.  She is terrific, real, down to earth.

I think I have only ever been to one book signing. It was with David Sedaris, and he was just as funny and charming and quirky in person as you'd imagine from reading his work.

Wish I could say I'll see y'all later at the signing!  VIBES it is a fun and rewarding time.

TOD

I think I've only been to maybe half a dozen actual book signings.

I'm not just saying this for obvious reasons, but by far the most enjoyable and forever memorable is BK's "Album..." signing in NYC in June 2012.  Not only was it my first chance to finally meet BK and DRs Elmore, Ben, FJL, and others in person for the first time, but it was such a nicely planned event overall.  That will always stand as a very important day.

Good morning, all! Another night of truly bizarre dreams: a subway ride with Liz Callaway where I missed my exit, working a concert in some dreadful cafeteria with a Big Name (was it Patti Lupone? I don't remember now). I still can't tell if my throat is sore from allergies or another cold.

So, I'm off to Toyland with much to accomplish there. Then back here for more work on IRMA LA DOUCE.

DR Cillaliz, happy belated birthday to you r mom! You had a busy day yesterday.

DR Dan M, I hope the progress continues to be progress

Met some great writers for a brief moment at book signings, including Horton Foote, Michael Connelly and Margaret Atwood.

I think my most favorite, though, was for Terry McMillan. She had filled the Majestic Theater here, and because there was so many people, she was going to sign only one book a person. I had brought my first edition hardback copy of her first novel, Mama, which didn't really sell because she was an unknown at the time. She was surprised to see it. Looked it over, asked me where I had gotten it and if I had the dust jacket (which I had left at home to keep protected). She said something about not having seen that in hardback for years, which made me think she didn't have a copy. And I guess signing it for a white guy was also different for her.

Well, the local production of Catch Me If You Can was a mixed bag. The lead male was only a double threat, nice actor, fine voice, but every time he danced -- and he danced a lot -- you just wished that he wasn't front stage and center.

The show is a grab bag, some good, some meh and it never really seemed to find its heart. I think the script was largely to blame. Though not all of the score was top drawer, the audience seemed to really enjoy the songs -- and the band assembled was really good.

The Lutheran jokes landed.

What surprised me most was how small the part really is for the FBI agent. Norbert Leo Butz must have been amazing in the role to have nabbed a Tony for lead actor. Outside of the first scene, the character's MIA for much of the first hour.

For our classic TV folks: In Progress is the Root of All Evil, there's a lyric that says "I plan to get in touch with Bob Montgomery next week" - I need another name that is even a little more recognizable than that - should be a TV series guy with the same amount of syllables - that's the hard part - if syllables didn't matter then Robert Young would be the kind of TV series personality actor we'd want - it's just that no one today knows who Robert Montgomery was - whereas Robert Young's Father Knows Best is still remembered.  The name has to be one of the mid to late 1950s.

I was out looking for butterflies this morning with Wae-Ling and the other folks. She and I left early because she won some tickets to a ball game this afternoon and I had to get her home in time for that.

Wae-Ling found a dying butterfly, which she carried very carefully out of the canyon. We don't collect live butterflies, but a dead/dying one was ok to bring back.

Turns out one of the movies in the film noir set I picked up at the library, Crime in the Streets, is a Don Siegel flick with a Franz Waxman jazz score. John Cassavetes' first movie with Sal Mineo and James Whitmore. Kinda of like a non-musical West Side Story.

TOD - My first book signing was when my sister took me to the downtown Detroit J. L. My brother said everyone knows her because they are always there in the second row. The signing was wonderful - I think the most folks we've ever had - over thirty.  Sold books, I read a little, answered questions and most importantly everyone had CAKE.  Some of the attendees were our very own RYacko, our very own Mark of Amy and Mark, Jenna, Sami, Brennley, Oliviana and two of Oliviana's friends (the young folks - great to have them all there), Sami's mom, Lanny Meyers, cousins Dee Dee and Alan and neighbor Tony Slide, Joanna Erdos, Tina Saddington, our very own Nick Redman, our Li'l Abner costume designer and her son, several others from LACC including our Mammy Yokum and Evil Eye Fleagle, Brennley's mom and dad and I know I'm forgetting five or six others.

Had an amazingly good dinner with friends at a new restaurant that specializes in cured meats and charcuterie. The owner is a cancer survivor, so he named the place Cured.

We had a bunch of small plates of things like sausage gumbo, fried chicken livers, fried oysters and corned beef tongue. Great flavors.

I made the mistake of ordering a pork cheek poutine with strands of pork meat and cheese curds mixed with fries and gravy. It tasted great but the size of the dish was big enough for the table.

And my friend Bonnie ordered the pork shank. It was 2 pounds of amazing pork meat with the best brussels sprouts and fried kale on the side. It was twice the size of the poutine.

So, there are leftovers.

All was wonderful except for one of the desserts. Do not deconstruct carrot cake. It was a mistake, big mistake.

Watching the beginning of Spike Lee's 25th Hour. I think this may be my favorite of his movies, outside of Crooklyn.

Forgot how good Philip Seymour Hoffman was in this.

Let me see............  book signings

The first signing I attended was for Phyllis Diller.  I believe I skipped class to go out to the Mall to see her and get her to sign one of her books.  She was charming and very funny.  Unfortunately, her husband at the time seemed to think that he was also a celebrity.  He sat next to her and had his own microphone.  He was not a welcome addition.

I also went to Border's, not too many years ago for a signing by Kenneth Anger.  I was apparently the only person in Tacoma who knew that he had written HOLLYWOOD BABYLON and HB2.  Also, apparently those books are only available in paperback, so I bought copies of both and had him sign them anyway.

And then I went down to Portland Oregon with cyber son Jed and daughter-in-law, Ann for a signing by this old Jew from California.  Without a doubt this was the best signing I had ever attended.  The author was charming and witty, and he told the best stories.  I wish I could remember his name.

I think I was at that signing!  That was the only book signing that I've ever been to.  I've had singers sign stuff, but that's not the topic of the day. :)

TOD: I didn't go because I was out of town, but last week David Sibley, who wrote the whole series of Sibley's Field Guide to North American Birds, was in town doing a book signing. I would have gone.

About 10 years ago, the non-fiction selector (since retired) for the library where I work, thinking she was buying a title for a general subject, chose this book by just the title alone:  The Field Guide to the North American Bird (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1580085741/)...however, if you click on the link and look at the cover, you'll see what it's really about! :))

Well, today I and four others of Theater Artists Olympia went down to the TAO storage unit, rented a U-Haul truck and
emptied out our storage unit.  Well, we got most of the stuff out.  We were there for several hours sorting, moving, almost getting hurt, hauling crap, etc.

After the van was loaded, a couple of the guys took it to the dump and dumped stuff, then we all met at another woman's house who said that we could store a lot of the flats and risers at her house (although she didn't tell her husband about it until this morning).  Then, we went to The Midnight Sun, our performance space, and unloaded what was left in the van.  I got to the storage unit at about 10:15 am, and didn't leave the Sun until about 6:15 pm.

We were all SO glad that we chose the 24-foot truck instead of trying to save money on a shorter truck.  We got most of it in one trip with just three stops, but if we'd have had to come back to the space more than once to fill the truck again, the 99¢/mile charge (it was the same for any sized truck) would've really killed us.

I went to Taco Del Mar for dinner (I had a $5 off punch card!) after it all ended, and when I came home, I took a nap.  I sort of slept for a couple of hours and I now feel a little better. :)
