does this mean different arrangements rather than the more traditional ones? Or something along the lines of the Trotter series of Sondheim scores that BK did?

Good morning, all! I hada long night of sleep, which was good. I've begun the bathroom removal project but i still don't quite know where I'll put everything. This does give me an excuse to toss expired drugs and other things I've collected over 30 years. I need to see my super and determine what time tomorrow the work will commence.

Today, I'm back to IRMA LA DOUCE percussion and the choral medley. Yesterday I scanned the first eleven pages of the medley and emailed it to the conductor so he can begin rehearsal this week.

It was great to see the photos from yesterday's reading. I hope tomorrow's reading is as much fun as I expect it to be.

I'm not sure, but I think the real time pressures of tax season are over three days early, in part because of the way Passover falls this year.

There will be a few rushes on Monday, but not the big April 15th rush any more, as of yesterday.

If you're looking for 5-syllable tv names of the era.....well nobody remembers him either....but the name might be good for a laugh:

Bishop Fulton Sheen

Was there any further discussion about the "autograph show" surprise?

Today I am attending the final performance of A COMEDY OF ERRORS at DePauw directed by my friend Andrew who is married to the lovely Amy, daughter of gospel singer Robert Gaither.

Very nice people.  The cast includes several of my CRUCIBLE and ACHILLES/ACHILLES SON acquaintances.  Tomorrow is my sister Molly's birthday, so I am taking her and her husband to the show....

The book signing sounds great, but best of all is seeing some photographic evidence.

For, as we all know, there can never be too much photographic evidence.

And Mystery and Imagination certainly does look like a nice bookstore.

My wife and I have been watching the 2nd season of RIPPER STREET.

This is a terrific cop show, set in London's White Chapel District a year or two after the Jack the Ripper murders.

The stories, which often involve actual historical characters (e.g. Joseph Merrick "The Elephant Man"), are quite unusual and unique.

Last night I started my viewing pleasures a little too late, so I had to stop the movie halfway through and let sleep, glorious sleep, take over.

The movie was Billy Wilder's ACE IN THE HOLE which I've had on the shelf here for a couple of years but hadn't yet watched, nor seen in the past.  In plain English, it's a delicious mouthful.  (If a movie can be a delicious mouthful.  I don't recommend actually putting it in your mouth.  But let's just go with that, okay?)  A wonderful film, and I look forward to the second half tonight, along with whatever extra material is in this Criterion set.

Terrific film choice DR CHAS SMITH.

An addendum to yesterday's TOD:

Some ten years ago the Walter Reade in NYC was showing Jason and the Argonauts and The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, and I heard that Ray Harryhausen was to be there for Q&A and to sign the new illustrated volume on his works.  I went mainly to enjoy seeing those films on the big screen and to hear him talk, and don't remember now why I didn't buy that book.  But I did have the presence of mind to take something in case he was willing to sign things.  And he was.  This was a bootleg LP of the Sinbad soundtrack purchased at one of the record stores on Hollywood Blvd. in the early '70s.  He might have stared at it for a microsecond, but he didn't seem phased, just signed, and the line moved on.  But the line was considerable, other people had brought books, laserdiscs, and whatnot, and a few minutes later they announced that Mr. Harryhausen would have to limit his signing to actual books purchased there.  Whew!  Just in time.

But the reason the event was memorable is that before we all went out to the lobby between the two films for the signing, they introduced a special surprise guest, Kathryn Grant Crosby, the enchanting star of Sinbad, who got almost a bigger rise out of the audience than Harryhausen had.  After getting my RH signature, I wandered around chatting with people then mosied back into the theater, and there was Ms. G./C. standing there alone for a moment, so I asked if she'd be willing to sign the record as well (it sports an iconic picture of her on the front cover in glorious bootleg black-and-white).  Not only was she willing, she seemed delighted to look at it, and unusually pleased to just stand there and talk with me for a few minutes.  Though people were milling about, no one was bothering us, and I got to enjoy this magical moment all to myself.

So, the two signatures together went to make an atypical signed object very very special.

DR CHAS SMITH - I have friends who worked with Kathryn Grant Crosby in summer stock in Indianapolis in Peter Pan and West Side Story.

They all remember her fondly as a hard worker, "one of the cast" not aloof, and just a fun person to talk to and work with.

She also appeared on Frances Farmer's show when Kathryn was in town for Peter Pan had a nice chat with Frances about Bing.

I gave in yesterday and bought some clothes in the size I swore I'd never wear....whew! they are really comfortable and it was freeing to just admit I'm that big right now and be more comfortable.  I am slowly starting to exercise, which is what I need to do, but it's silly to be uncomfortable in the mean time.
Title: Re: IN PLAIN ENGLISH

I did discover something interesting, they have changed the sizing a bit. The numerical size that used to be L is now associated with XL.  and on up the line. I've seen this at two different stores.  I mentioned it at Coldwater Creek and was told they did that last year, just ignore the numbers.  Hmmm.  So you could not change at all in size or shape but you're now wearing a bigger size.   I think it's a vast governmental conspiracy to make us all lose weight and exercise

Happy Sunday, all!

I am so glad I made even half of the book signing. I had an earlier rehearsal yesterday for a staged reading that I am doing on May 6th, a work session that I barely escaped from in time to make it to Glendale. The rehearsal is for a staged reading of a new musical about Puritans and vampires on the Mayflower. Uh huh.  You do the math.

At the moment we're slogging through group numbers. I've not heard my two solos yet. I suppose as long as they're not a reworked version of "I Gotta Crow" from Peter Pan, with lyrics like "I gotta bite"... I think I'll be okay. Oh, the things we do for $1.98.

I am also soon doing a table read of another new musical based on a movie called "The Boynton Beach Club", which no one saw. The film starred Dyan Cannon and Michael Nouri. So far, I've not seen a script and only heard a couple of songs. But the table read cast includes Valerie Perri, Mary Gordon Murray, Barry Pearl and Lainie Kazan. Go figure. Valerie and I will be Dyan and Michael.

Meantime, I am looking forward to stealing some time to read my wonderfully signed copy of "Red Gold"!!  Thanks so much, BK!!

Have a wonderful day all. I'm off to grow fangs, even though they'll be a pain in the ass to sing with.   :D

DR Mike - my understanding is that these are Sondheim songs "re-composed" by various contemporary artists. I don't know exactly what that means, or what to expect. I imagine it will be more fun for me, knowing the original songs, than for someone who doesn't.

Quote
Alexis Moore Eytinge Performs Cabaret Marital Status: Not Married a.k.a. Single. Alexis has put together a variety of songs and quip to chronicle the heart and mind's relationship with love. With Yvette Starkey accompanying her on the piano and the delicious restaurant and bar it will be a delightful evening!

I think DR Singdaw needs to get out a bit more, maybe go to a musical event or two. He's been such a stay-at-home since the move!

John G, another congrats to your nephew. I'm a big believer in scholarship awards; I think they really help to build self-esteem and keep young people motivated.

Cilla, my rule of thumb when I had to purchase a larger size was to not buy anything too nice. I didn't want to feel bad about giving it up when I lost weight. I also keep a few of the larger items in my closet--just in case.

As for sizing, it makes no sense at all. When I first returned to LA I bought some polo shirts (I LOVE polo shirts) from Land's End in my usual size, a SMALL. I was surprised at just how small they were. The next time I purchased MEDIUMs. The MEDIUMs are actually smaller than some SMALLs I have from several years ago.

I think Chico's had the right idea. They created their own sizing system. Inconvenient at first, but the old system really isn't helping customers.

I'm pretty much the same.  I have a few nice things that fit ok. They are still the old size but fit well enough for now. It was the basic casual "comfortable" stuff that was too tight.  I only got a few things.

I just finished a wonderful dinner of Dutch lettuce.  It's something my grandparents used to make (and yes they were Dutch).  It's basically wilted leaf lettuce with chopped hard boiled egg and boiled potatoes in it.  I add onion and chopped ham to the frying bacon before adding the vinegar and a little sugar.  It tasted like summer as I watched the snow pile up outside

Watched two documentaries tonight and may go for a third.  First was Crazy Love, a really disturbing doc about love gone nutty.  And then a doc about two obsessive Tiffany fans - that was even more disturbing and even more so because the filmmakers seem to have no point or point of view - they just point and click.  One of them, the one with Asperger's, I remember very well from two of the Ray Courts shows I did where I sat either next to Tiffany or in close proximity.  He came up and talked to me for quite a while - I think Nick was there and will probably remember.  I have a photo of Tiffany and I together - have to go find it.

The Anthony de Mare Liaisons Sondheim project concert was truly enjoyable. It was held in a converted warehouse with exposed brick and stone and dramatic lighting, with cabaret-style seating and an open bar and popcorn on the tables.

They commissioned 32 contemporary composers to select a Sondheim song and write a short piano piece (most were between 3 and 5 minutes) with the song as their inspiration. Some stayed fairly close to the source; others went quite far afield. But if you know the source material, it was endlessly fascinating. One piece, by Steve Reich, is written for 2 pianos, so Anthony had pre-recorded one of the parts and then played along with himself. The piece by Duncan Sheik featured a pre-recorded guitar loop along with the piano part.
The encore was a setting of Not While I'm Around by film composer Thomas Newman.

Also interspersed throughout the evening were frequently hilarious audio excerpts of interviews with Sondheim and the commissioned composers, which is all part of the project.

DR elmore3003, isn't Judith Sherman your producer on the Herbert recordings? She is producing the Liaisons recording of all the pieces, which will be released in 2015.

Had there not been any wind these last two days (thereby no internet connection), I would have been logged in and had suggested "Arthur Godfrey", "Ricky Nelson", "Gary Cooper" or to be tres outre, "Peter Lorre".

Today (actually, as soon as my friend Margo comes to pick me up), I am going down to Portland to see Margo's daughter Alexis in her own cabaret show!  We're going to have dinner and then watch Alexis perform the show that she put together on her own.  Here's her description:

Tonight, I saw Alexis' show, "Not Married a.k.a. Single" about her experiences in the dating pool...the good, the bad and the just okay (there were no horrible experiences...she's only 27 years old).  BK, you've always said that a one-person show like this has to have a point.  Well, she talks about having taken a class on how to put together one-person shows and needing a through-line, and she had it.  She talked about her dating experiences, and all the songs (for the most part) really worked with the stories she told.  It had a beginning, middle, an unnecessary break (if you ask me) and an end.

She has a lot of experience performing in shows and choir concerts and talent shows, so she was very confident and comfortable on stage.  It does need an outside eye to hone and focus it, but I think it could work really well with some help.  The crowd was definitely friends and family, but fortunately there was no hootin' and hollerin'...just some well deserved applause.  Also, no automatic standing ovation.  The audience showed appropriate appreciation.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable show.

I wish I had a song list.  There were only four or five songs that I didn't recognize (and I liked all the songs), but Marsha (Margo's friend who came with us) said that she didn't know many songs at all and probably would've enjoyed it more if she did know more of them.  Oh, well.  You can't please everyone.
