Title: LYRICS AND STORYTELLING AND ATTITUDE AND HAPPINESS AND BRIGHTNESS, OH MY
Post by: bk on April 17, 2014, 12:29:53 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had storytelling and attitude and happiness and brightness but no lyrics, and now it is time for you to post until the storytelling cows come home.

From yesterday:
Then I stopped at Gelson's and got a couple of drumettes and some slaw.

I'M SHOCKED, SHOCKED!   What happened to the tap tap tapioca?  That's one of the few desserts I can still enjoy.

I bought some Kozy Shack tapioca pudding a couple of days ago and had some last night when I got home from the concert.  It was delish!

Topic of the Day (addendum):  I've never been to a "real" deli, so I have no idea what it's like.  Here in Olympia every year (it just happened just last month), Temple Beth Hatfiloh puts on what they call Blintzapalooza (http://www.theolympian.com/2012/03/21/2038698/its-more-than-just-blintzes.html), an annual fundraiser for charities.  I wasn't able to go this year, but my sister did.  She bought some of the frozen blintzes and gave me some!  Even heated up in a microwave, they're wonderful.  That's pretty much the extent of my experience with Jewish foodstuffs.

Good morning, all! I slept rather well, although my allergies are in full force: nearly every tree on my block, to due jerk mismanagement in the NY City government that decided to plant flowering trees everywhere, is contributing to an outrageously high pollen count. They're beautiful to see but the havoc is not fun.

This morning, around 9:00, I will leave for the IRMA LA DOUCE band rehearsal. I love tis score, and I can't wait to hear it all.

No more news for now.

As absurd as this seems now, I would have only barely recognized the name Nick Redman...up until one day in January 2011 when I just happened to browse the L.A. Times online and saw the article announcing the creation of the Twilight Time label.  To say I was overjoyed at their plans would be an understatement, and the amount of "product" on my shelves after only three years is almost frightening.  Just to pull a number out of the air, I'd say I've purchased some 95% of their releases.  (Don't tell my bank account, okay?)

I'm up and have announced almost everywhere.  Here's the complete information and it's up at Kritzerland:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new world premiere limited edition release – three great scores on two CDs for the price of one CD:

OVERLORD

THE DISAPPEARANCE

HUSTLE

Overlord and Hustle Music Composed and Conducted by Paul Glass
The Disappearance Music Composed and Conducted by Robert Farnon

Director Stuart Cooper is the common thread for these releases.  His 1975 film Overlord should have been the launch pad for a major directorial career.  Instead, it had a minor release and disappeared until it was, at long last, resurrected years later and rightfully became the classic it always was, beloved by all who saw it, and having a fan in none other than Stanley Kubrick, who declared the only way it could be improved was to make it twice as long.  His 1977 film, The Disappearance, also disappeared, especially in the United States, where it was mangled into awfulness by its crass distributor, who completely reedited the film and changed its score.  It, too, was resurrected years later and has recently and found its way to Blu-ray, courtesy of Twilight Time.  And Hustle aka A Sordid Affair (2000), was made for TV and seen by only those who happen to catch it.  In between these three films, Cooper was constantly busy, doing TV (several mini-series, including A.D., The Long Hot Summer, Mario Puzo’s The Fortunate Pilgrim), but he just never got the brass ring that he should have.

His films are uniquely his and don’t feel like anyone else’s, none more so than Overlord, which seamlessly and brilliantly blends historical footage of World War II from the Imperial War Museum with newly-shot footage that matches perfectly, telling the story of one soldier’s life from his being called up to his taking part in D-Day.  Paul Glass’s music for Overlord is one of the movie’s strongest assets, a film music masterpiece – a melancholy, elegiac and at times dissonant tone poem that is both exquisite and hugely moving.  The score’s main theme is hauntingly beautiful and is used throughout the film to great effect.  There are other themes that weave in and out, each creating a perfect musical landscape to go along with Cooper’s visual landscape.   It is an astonishing piece of work and we’re thrilled to finally give it its world premiere release, on the 70th anniversary of D-Day and in conjunction with the film’s Blu-ray release on Criterion.

Hustle, a sexy made for TV neo-noir thriller (shot in Toronto), reunited Cooper and Glass.  This was a completely different kind of score for Glass – bluesy, sexy, sultry and dripping with eroticism.  It has a beauty of a main theme, but, like most Glass scores, also has moments of dissonance and off-kilter writing.

The Disappearance, the tale of a hit man for an international assassination agency whose wife has disappeared, has a score by Robert Farnon, a wonderful film composer, and also conductor and composer of light music.  For The Disappearance, Farnon uses the Ravel Piano Concerto in G major as the basis for his score, but there’s also original Farnon music, too – it’s all of a piece and compliments the film perfectly.

Overlord and Hustle were transferred from Paul Glass’s personal tapes, which we got in the nick of time – they transferred perfectly but as soon as they came off the machine they were literally falling apart.  Both scores are in beautiful stereo sound.  Sadly, no one, including the Farnon estate, was able to locate any original scoring tapes for The Disappearance, so for those cues we used the film’s mono music track, but thanks to mastering engineer James Nelson, it all sounds excellent.

Overlord/The Disappearance/Hustle is limited to 1000 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the first week of June, but we’ve been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I watched WHEN JEWS WERE FUNNY a couple of weeks ago.

I agree that it wasn't well done; almost a catharsis for the filmmaker trying to figure out if he was a Jew or not.

But, I did enjoy the comics and some of their routines and jokes.

I know I've talked about delis before (and really, can there be such a thing as too much deli talk? - I ask you!), so my simple answer today will be to name two basic foodstuffs, either of which is essential to any deli visit:  pastrami and/or corned beef, or, when the mood is right, lox/cream cheese/etc. on a bagel.  And please, pile the latter high with raw onion and some capers and a thin slice of tomato, willya?

(Note:  I didn't die for it.  I sat there and shamelessly enjoyed every bite.  And it was a huge plate.)

An excellent question!

A quick search doesn't yield a simple list, but that would be well worth pursuing.  I've had the pleasure of going back to films I haven't watched in forever and finding his participation, so between the studio-released movies and the ones on Twilight Time, there's got to be a considerable number.

And yet .... I did it.

I bought a ticket for IRMA LA DOUCE on Wednesday, May 7th.  Got a beautiful seat (second row mezzanine, center), even better than my MOST HAPPY FELLA seat which was quite fine.  This gives me three weeks to get familiar with the show, from scratch.  And it's a busy three weeks.  I'll just have to make it happen.

Be a good idea to back up our CDs of the original cast album, too.  And the soundtrack album.  Can't be too safe.  And I'd recommend storing those backups well offsite -- say, in Lawn Guyland? -- for extra security.

It's a shocking story until you read this: http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/ukraine.asp

And yes, it's still shocking that a few extremist cretins would pass these out, but it's no different than if a few extremist cretins passed them out here - But the story being shared by thousands on Facebook is written specifically to be "shared" there and for the resulting clicks that the sites who are running it get.  That's what Facebook and these kinds of stories is all about and why I absolutely loathe Facebook for any reason other than getting the word out about what folks are up to.

But you can only do amended on paper and they don't do direct deposit for amended returns. They issue a check. I know because this year we filed an amended return for our 2012 taxes. We were married in 2012 but it wasn't recognized by the Feds so we had to wait to file an amended return. I mailed in the forms and got a letter saying it was accepted and that a check would be issued in 4 to 6 weeks.

I'm 5 1/2 hours into Shoah and can only watch 30 minutes or so at a time because of how upsetting it is. This story on Jews in east Ukraine having to register is making me sick to think about:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2014/04/17/jews-ordered-to-register-in-east-ukraine/7816951/

I thought the world was done with this sort of thing...I guess not. :(

BK, thanks for posting the snopes explanation of the situation.

I guess I am one of those that jumped on the  bandwagon too quickly, instead of waiting for it to play out and find out what was what. I usually try to avoid doing such things.

I think the USA Today story explains the same thing that the Snopes story does, albeit packed in so much extraneous detail that you do have to read it closely to figure out what's happening. Still, as MBarnum said, in light of the recent shooting -- and the ridiculous comments that the mayor of that town made -- it's horrifying that anyone would make such comments.

And tying it back to Shoah, several of the witnesses point out that many in Ukraine helped the Nazis.

And I am home from the orchestra reading. What a funny score! The orchestration sounds like a fantasy of every Café-chantant you could imagine, playing everything from a rhumba to mazurka. The accordion player is great, and when he and the guitar and bass take over, it's heaven.

T.O.D.

When I used to stay at the Milford Plaza when I came to New York, there was a Deli in the corner of the Plaza building.  I got the impression over the years that this was more of a corporation-style deli, rahter than an authentic Jewish deli.  Still, I loved their dill pickles on the table, their potato salad, and their mile-high corned beef sandwiches.

My favorite was a sandwich that was half corned beef and half turkey breast.  I could only eat half the sandwich, so I always had breakfast the next day.  I loved that place, but I can't remember the name of it.  It is apparently no longer there.

In my New York days, and when I never knew a whit (save for Bissell) about gluten, I loved many Jewish foodstuffs.  Among my favorites, I ate many kasha varnishkes, hamentashen, flanken brisket, chopped chicken livers, and matzoh ball soup, and Dr. Brown's celery soda.  Oh how I miss the days of not worrying about gluten!

The senior couple that lived next door to me when I was a wee tot became my "adopted" Jewish grandparents, they were my earliest teachers of reading and walking.  They were great.  Every day I would see them, we would walk to the local corner candy store and they would buy me a Little Golden book.  I had such a collection at one time in my very early age.  By the time I got to First Grade, I was very far ahead of my classmates when it came to "reading readiness" and it's almost all due to my "grandparents" next door.  That, and asking to be read to while on the potty.  But, that's another story. ;D

Ben, I did read that.  At least when I get the original (lesser) amount that I will get from the itemized 1040, I can keep that, then I can file the 1040X to get the difference. :)

I haven't seen the stories on FB since I haven't had too much access to wifi lately.  Reading the article all the way through basically said what Snopes did.  Too many people, and I am often guilty of this, don't read beyond the headlines.

After we left you we met our friends in the lovely Georgetown and they took us on a tour pointing out points of interested.  We went into the Georgetown University.  We were very glad we had our tasty lunch with you as dinner was at a Mexican restaurant.  Apparently our friends are clueless as to what good Mexican food taste like-lol

The next day we went to the horse races at Keeneland.  Bryan said we should go Kentucky Bourbon tasting which sounded good to us.  The races were interesting and we did have delicious Bourbon bread pudding.  In the evening they served us some delicious Bourbon so we didn't miss out on the tasting part ;)

Driving though beautiful West Virginia was a disappointment as the trees, about the only view from the freeway, were bare.  West Virginia University is beautiful though our 10 minutes in the town of Morgantown was long enough.  We saw a couple of nice buildings and gladly left.  Unfortunately we didn't have time to enjoy views of the river or the surrounding scenic areas.

When we arrived in Maryland we had to wait over an hour for our room and Craig was busy cleaning his apartment.  We walked around until we could check in and then we walked to his place and saw grand dog Yogi and grand cat Kitty.  We arrived with treats for both of them.  Yogi smelled the treats, took one look at Keith and immediately sat.  I surprised him with a treat first.  He obviously remembered us, and was especially happy to see Keith.  To my delight Kitty ran over to say hello to me.  She is skittish with new people so I know she was happy to see me.

Tuesday we went to see the Cherry Blossoms which would have been spectacular had the wind not blown much of them off in the morning before we got there.  Still is was a nice day walking around.  Craig even saw one of his good friends and her family and it was nice to meet them.

In the evening Craig had school work to do and couldn't join us for dinner with his pre-school friend who is the son of one of my dearest friends.  I got to hold an 8th old baby for most of the evening :)

DR Jane, Morgantown has some interesting locales and the nearby Cooper's Rock lockout (10 or 15 minutes east on I-68) is stunning, but the town can be HELL to get through whenever anything's going on at the University.  Big games, graduation, you name it.  Just stay away.  That said, I have special feelings for it because my mother's family came from there and we'd visit when I was a kid.  I was especially enchanted with the topography.
