Well, you've read the notes, the notes were blocked, and now it is time for you to post until the blocked cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: LODESTAR!
-
BK, I went to re-download "Red Gold" for my Kindle and it seems to still not work. :(
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
good morning to all
-
i just can't wake up this morning
-
Good morning, all! I would have liked another hour's sleep, but that's not going to happen. I'll leave here around 9:00 for physical therapy, and then return here and finish up the choral medley. Tomorrow, I'll run to Toyland, scan it and send it off.
I have nothing more to report. Life is quiet for now, and I hope it remans so for some time. I've had enough excitement and tsuris lately.
-
Good Friday!
-
Good morning, all.
Up too late last night, and up a little too early this morning. But hey!
-
Relaxing and sipping coffee now, but must move on soon to working on music, and must get a lot done today.
-
TOD:
BLU - Conrack last night, and since the following Twilight Time order is out for delivery today, tonight's pleasure will be Broadway Danny Rose and then whatever else looks good to sample or get started on.

Friday morning greetings! We're taking it easy this morning before calling on one of our shut in parishioners at 1pm. We'll probably go out for a late lunch and maybe do some shopping. Service at 5:30.

DR ChasSmith, I, too, spent a lot of time in Morgantown, WV, from 1964 to the early '80s. My aunt and uncle moved there when he became a faculty member in the WVU medical school. They raised my 2 closest cousins there and my grandmother lived nearby for a while in her later years. Aunt & uncle divorced and she eventually moved to Phoenix, but I have many fond memories of Morgantown and surroundings.
-
Good morning, all.
And a blessed good Friday.

TOD:
DVD: Shoah, the last 2:30 hours; the start of the new Parade's End

BK, I went to re-download "Red Gold" for my Kindle and it seems to still not work. :(
I am having the same problem, but I think it is just re-loading the original (flawed) version. Since it "knows" that I already purchased it, it won't let me purchase it again.

Also out for delivery today is -- finally, the thing you have all been waiting for! -- my new phono cartridge. I discussed "my needs" with a couple of retailers and did considerable followup research, and of course ended up spending more than intended. But I can't wait to start hearing my records on a much improved system. I just need a quiet hour or two to dedicate to the task of taking the turntable down, giving it a good cleaning and going over, slowly and carefully installing the cartridge, doing the balancing and alignment, and setting everything back up. Due to other priorities, this will happen on Monday or Tuesday.
The prices are crazy if you want something good. The one I'd been using probably added $100 to the cost of the turntable and tonearm way back when, and it was considered very good -- on the "low end of the high end" scale, which is where you get some real bang for your buck and where I've always liked to be. Well, this one is $450, and is still "low end of the high end", but it's a whole new ball game in quality and has gotten nothing but rave reviews.
$450 for a "needle" probably sounds outrageous, but that's 10% of those you'd put into a much more sophisticated turntable, and but 3% of the ultimate high end. Yes, my fellow DRs, there are a few out there topping out at $15,000. But would you put anything less into your $150,000 turntable? Or even the $28,000 one in the rec room? What would the neighbors say??

Whew! My uncle used to buy a package of needles for 99 cents. Of course those were for 78 RPM records.....that eventually became unplayable.

Very nice to hear about the ABNER rehearsals. Things are moving along at Guys & Dolls as well.
We are off today and will be finished blocking Act One on Tuesday.....except for Sky's scenes, since he won't be joining us until the next week.

I am also enjoying reading about DR JANE's trips and look forward to her photos.

On the radio last night, it was announced that the Bloomington Bells, a bell choir, would be doing music on Saturday from many composers including:

From DR Chas:
DR Jane, Morgantown has some interesting locales and the nearby Cooper's Rock lockout (10 or 15 minutes east on I-68) is stunning, but the town can be HELL to get through whenever anything's going on at the University. Big games, graduation, you name it. Just stay away. That said, I have special feelings for it because my mother's family came from there and we'd visit when I was a kid. I was especially enchanted with the topography.
I think Cooper's Rock is the beautiful area Craig and Yogi met Bryan and Kate (about half way between them). The photos were beautiful. Craig said it is a beautiful state and will be going on a short trip there this summer with friends. They have rented a cabin. My mistake was wanting to stay in the town, which fortunately we couldn't find a room since there was a game. It was really just an overnight stop as our destination was Maryland. I would have liked to have time to explore more of the state.

Thank you DR Slingdaw.
Getting to Cleveland to see Bryan turned into a big challenge when our flight to San Francisco was delayed causing us to miss our connection to Cleveland. It took all my control not to cry. Bryan only had one day off for us to be with him, plus dinner the night we arrived. A kind person at United who was about to leave work spent over an hour trying to get us to Cleveland. The best she could do was a 9 hour layover in LA with a red-eye to Cleveland. We truly wanted to be functioning for our short time with Bryan. I finally asked if we could fly to Detroit, or any other city, and drive from there to Cleveland. We were able to fly to Detroit but we still had to get to San Francisco. There was another flight about to go but it was completely booked. Unbeknownst to us the woman assisting us and been checking the flight every 15 minutes and suddenly exclaimed 2 seats opened up and I grabbed them for you. Thank goodness as our scheduled flight was eventually canceled.
Instead of arriving at our hotel around 7:00PM we arrived at 12:30AM and were very grateful to be there.
We had a nice day with Bryan and Kate at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He drove us past the Cleveland Clinic and his neighborhood. In the evening we went to the Porco Lounge & Tiki Room with old fashioned drinks. I had an incredible Mai Tai and Keith had a Fog Cutter, which they are apparently known for. http://www.tikiroom.com/tikicentral/bb/viewtopic.php?topic=46233&forum=2

From Bruce:
Happy to see Jane back - and she'll be happy to know Red Gold is now a Nook book and it's also on amazon for Kindle.
Great news!!! :)
I just ordered it. When I can read it will depend on the arrival of my next library book. I have several that I'm next in line for and, unfortunately in this case, library books are read first as they must be read before the due date.

Yes, it's not just the gridlock that's a problem -- there aren't nearly enough hotels/motels to handle the University events. The rooms sell out early and expensively during those times.
The amazing thing about Cooper's Rock is that you drive in and park, and the rock itself which is a major lookout point is, like, a five-minute walk away. It was probably my mother's favorite spot when growing up there, they took me up when I was a kid, and I've been there twice in the past five years while visiting relatives. It's one of most stupendous views.
-
The Blu-rays have arrived! -- just in the nick redman of time for some nice viewing tonight.
-
And I am home from therapy. I'll take a look at this medley ending and hopefully finish it in the next couple of hours.

Beautiful stuff. I always get a wonderful taste of apricot in that bourbon. I have met the current master distiller of that a few times and knew the former one, Lincoln Henderson, who created the brand, I think.
-
What about this one DR John? This is the one we didn't get to taste. I think they purchased it for the bottle.
-
Ordering proper bourbon Old Fashions with Craig we had Bullocks in them. I now know why he complains most places don't make a proper Old Fashioned. There should not be club soda or maraschino cherries.
-
DR JR&63,
Do you have any favorite songs of Josh Groban?
Mine are (so far) , BRAVE, FALLING SLOWLY, THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS, AND HAPPY IN MY HEARTACHE.
I would like to try to learn some of these songs on my guitar.

DR TCB.....break legs on your opening night....which I think is tonight.
How did your preview go? Did you write about it and I missed it? That's entirely possible.

Break a leg to DR TCB from us also!!!

I attended a wonderful Josh Groban concert a few years back at Radio City. I think I was the only male in the 5000-seat theatre. (I'm exaggerating, but not by much.) But it was lots of fun - especially the lighter-waving for "You Raise Me Up." I also saw a CHESS concert he co-starred in at the New Amsterdam, but that was years ago.

Nope! :) It's off of I-68, east of Morgantown. Were you on that? After it crosses the Cheat River to the east of town, you take the NEXT exit east, about five miles up the road. That exit puts you right on the park road that winds back through the forest a mile or two to the parking area and the rock.

DR Jane, thanks for sharing your photos.
Cooper's Rock was one of my aunt's favorite places and, if I were home, I'd post some family photos from our picnics there.

Whew! My uncle used to buy a package of needles for 99 cents. Of course those were for 78 RPM records.....that eventually became unplayable.
You still need those for the old Victrola type of player. I have a 1911 Victrola, the basic oak tabletop one. It doesn't use a horn, just doors that open up where the sound comes out. I have maybe 10 or 20 of those needles left in a tiny vintage package. Unfortunately, what I don't have is any early acoustic recordings (where a horn was the microphone), which are what really sound good on such a player. And I don't want to load myself up with 78s, so I only keep a few oddball ones that are just for fun.
They do make cartridges for playing 78s on regular turntables: http://www.needledoctor.com/Online-Store/78-Phono-Cartridges

Price, as I recall.

And I do like a proper Old Fashioned.
Do you also have trouble ordering one? Craig has had small arguments with bartenders who insist he is wrong. At dinner near the Dulles airport the bartender was very nice about making it however we wanted it. We called Craig for the recipe. The waiter was extremely interested and plans to try a proper Old Fashioned vs the typical ones which he doesn't think are very good. He agreed with Craig's choice of bourbon :)

Gosh, I learned all about that, years ago, watching The Cartridge Family, which was a mash-up of the Cartwrights and Partridges. That Hoss Cartridge really sung like a rusty hinge. But, those gals really hung on him like mung on beans.
What the heck does this all mean? Nothing, except that it captures this moment of stream of consciousness.

It's not something I typically take a chance on ordering -- but in the two places I did, I was exceedingly lucky to get wonderful ones -- so wonderful, in fact, that I could hardly believe my good fortune, and ordered again...and again... :)

With the first time, I was able to "return" it for a refund. I haven't found the option this time. I know that if there's an update to a Kindle title, I've been able to redownload without repaying, so hopefully when this is all fixed, I can do that again.
Usually if an ebook has an update you can go into manage your kindle and it should show which books have updates. Then you just click on the update. Does it not show this. I would email amazon if it doesn't.

Hello, everyone.
I'm still catching up on posts.
-
DR Druxy, I've never seen a gluten-free rye bread. Do you know which brand it is?
-
I noticed that Trader Joe's now carries gluten-free chocolate chip cookies, as well as another kind, which I don't recall.
-
Thanks to both DRs Laura and Singdaw for the blood moon pictures. I'm happy to say that I was sound asleep that night.
-
Glad to hear that the LI'L ABNER rehearsals are going well.
-
Bruce, will there be tickets issued for AN EVENING WITH RICHARD SHERMAN? Is there any guarantee of getting a seat?
-
And I do like a proper Old Fashioned.
It's not something I typically take a chance on ordering -- but in the two places I did, I was exceedingly lucky to get wonderful ones -- so wonderful, in fact, that I could hardly believe my good fortune, and ordered again...and again... :)
LOL Craig used to make them when he lived here, I just didn't know what I was drinking. The first night in Silver Spring we went to a restaurant he wanted to try, for the bar not the food. I had ordered a glass of wine when I heard him say bourbon and changed my order. I was truly glad I did. It also came with one big ice cube which didn't melt and water down my drink :)
-
Another fond memory from Morgantown: shopping for glassware at the factory stores. I have stemware and vases that my Mother bought when we first started visiting there in the mid '60s.
I didn't see glassware but then we didn't go inside a single store.
If you're ever around Morgantown in the fall, don't miss the opportunity to have buckwheat cakes. I mean, if you like to try different kinds of pancakes. I love 'em.
If we ever get back they sound good. I expect fall is the best time of year to go there.
-
Thanks to both DRs Laura and Singdaw for the blood moon pictures. I'm happy to say that I was sound asleep that night.
We had pouring rain. Had we been home we would have seen it.
-
Usually if an ebook has an update you can go into manage your kindle and it should show which books have updates.
"Update" option is not there.
I tried totally deleting the first purchase from my account, and then re-purchasing the new version. Unfortunately, it is giving me the exact same problems that the first version did - hanging the device, and not being able to be opened or read. :P
-
Glad to hear that VIXMOM is recuperating.

DR Druxy, I've never seen a gluten-free rye bread. Do you know which brand it is?
At lunch today, I went to Costco to get some cat food and I saw some gluten-free thin pizza crusts. I bought it, not because I need gluten-free stuff, but because I like thin pizza crusts. I'll see what it's like, hopefully some time this weekend.
-
There was something else I wanted to mention, but can't recall what it was. sigh.

Yes, it is.

George, most of the gluten-free breads and crackers I've tried taste enough like wheat that you really wouldn't know that they weren't. Let us know how you like them.
-
IMHO, it's best to eat some gluten-free products, even if you don't have to, to minimize your chances of celiac disease. There are some excellent gluten-free products available these days. In our last discussion I don't think I mentioned Dr Kracker crackers. Very good, IMO. I like the Seeded Spelt and the Seedlander.
-
George, what was the problem with your taxes?
-
A friend of mine has spent many hours recently on his taxes, only to find that there was a bug in his version of Turbo Tax. Ugh! Many agonizing hours spent while he tried to figure out what was wrong.
-
Good Friday is almost over!! We reprise our Stations of the Cross at 7:30 along with Veneration for those who could not be there. Gotta love drama in religion (the good kind, not the bad kind). It's pretty amazing.
-
Glad you had a good trip, Jane. The cherry blossoms are very delicate and a few hours of wind or rain can wipe them out. There really is only about a week at most to view them at their best.
-
George, what was the problem with your taxes?
It turns out that I had entered information into a field that needed to be blank. My mistake, but it was an easy fix. :)
-
I did them online at www.freefilefillableforms.com.
-
I took three days this week as a staycation and it was great. Yesterday I was at the old Helms Bakery complex. They now have an old Helms truck there and are selling cookies and ice cream (?!) out of it. They are also putting in a cafe and bakery on the premises. It was announced maybe a year ago, but nothing actually took place. They're starting construction now. Great for those nostalgic for old LA.

Doesn't sound like a well-designed form!

Glad you got it straightened out. I've never heard of paying less taxes using the short form.

Once upon a time, there was a film music discussion list called "filmus-l". I spent many years (and hours) reading and posting, posting and reading, ranting and raving, and chiding the churlish.
Once, I even wrote a song lyric. Someone had started a thread about RKO doing a musical version of "Citizen Kane" and had some fun with song titles.
I then suggested they could move on to "King Kong" and said I already had a song for the climactic climb up the Empire State Tower Building.
I found it today and here it is:
Up, Up, Up! (Empire State Building version)
14-Hundred Fifty-Four feet in the air
He carries me up in search of his lair
The sweat off his palms drenches my being
No chance of rescue, no chance of fleeing.
Lord know the stains won't come out of this dress;
(This wind is so strong my hair is a mess)
Strange, but I'm having an odd sort of stirring....
Oh! What is that sound? Do I hear a whirring?
Don't put me down, Kong, don't be a dope,
Don't let me go, Kong, I'm your only hope.
Choppers are circling, don't overextend,
You're swatting at killers who'll win in the end
(Bloodcurdling Fay Wray scream)
Down, down, down to your doom
Why must this tale end in such gloom?
My hero is coming, I'm tattered and pale
Oh, Darn! Look at that! I've torn a nail.
-

Not exactly...doing the fix was easy, but finding out what I actually needed to fix was not! I got an e-mail with some kind of code message, and I eventually had to google the message to see what other people might have posted about that. A co-worker suggested that and it's what worked.
-
Glad you got it straightened out. I've never heard of paying less taxes using the short form.
Fortunately, I don't have to pay, but I'll be able to get more back with the standard deduction than itemizing.

Thank you to all of you for the good wishes, both yesterday and today. Yes, tonight is opening night. The less said about last evening, the better. I came home very angry. I am over it now. I am hoping for a successful opening night.
-
Welcome Back, DR Jane!
Thanks.
We met a friend of Craig's & her family while viewing the Cherry Blossoms. The in-laws were heading to Tacoma the next day to visit their son.
You should have told them to go see LITTLE WOMEN.
-
And I do like a proper Old Fashioned.
I used to prefer an improper Old Fashion! They were always much more fun to drink.

Hopefully the saying, "Bad rehearsal, good performance" holds true. :)
-
TCB, I hope you are the happy victim of "the worse the dress rehearsal, the better the opening night" situation. Many vibes.
-
I just came across a receipe for "Old Fashioned Potato Salad." It says that it is very good to serve with chili. I would never think to have potato (or potatoe) salad with chili. I have had it with crackers or with corn bread; and when I was in grade school, once a week our lunch menu had chili and cinnamon rolls. But potato Salad?

Nice photo DR TCB!!!!

Well, it's time for me to head downtown to work concessions for Olympia Family Theater's production of "Orphan Trains." I saw it a couple of weeks ago, but this time I hope to see the beginning of the second act. We usually have to clean up the concessions before we can go back into the show, but in the past if I've wanted to clean up later, the house manager has let me. We'll see about tonight.
Until later!

How does one get into the private club at California Adventure?
-
By spending millions of dollars, or by being there with someone you know who's a member of it.
I recommend the latter.
-
Potato salad and chili. Don't like the sound of it, but you could probably get that at a few barbecue joints in this state if you mixed and matched items on the menu.
-
Hoping to watch the last 2:30 of Shoah tonight.

DR VIXMOM PM me your address (again), I may have something for you.
thank you!

Well, I dillied and I dallied, and it's a little late to be starting BROADWAY DANNY ROSE ... but I'm doing it, and will finish up tomorrow night if I don't get through it tonight.

Actually, the investors in the Helms Bakery complex seem to be on the same wavelength. Jane may get her chocolate donuts after all.

Oh, and Jewish foods: bagels (love bagels) and rugelach.
(A couple weeks ago I learned that Trader Joe's now carries rugelach, but only one flavor--raspberry walnut. This could be the death of me.)

Read an article today on how Japan is doing a Krispy Kreme ice cream sundae.
Think of it: A hot donut just out of the fryer with ice cream melting into it and caramel sauce.

Who happens to be the cousin of French Friar.

Thank you again for all the good wishes. I left the theater angry for the second night in a row. However, my anger tonight was tempered by two things.
-
First of all, the show was really solid tonight. Everyone really sparkled and the audience (although small) seemed to really enjoy the show and the performances.
-
And secondly, driving home from the theater I decided to treat myself to a late evening snack. All I had eaten all day was some cheese and crackers, so once the show was over I was hungry. I decided to pull into the drive-thru at McDonald's (I hope S. Woody White isn't reading this). Normally, I just order two double cheese burgers, but tonight I felt I deserved a better meal. So I order two Quarter Pounders with cheese for a total of $8.30. But when I pulled forward, I found out that the driver ahead of me had picked up my tab.
Pay it forward! Isn't that cool?
