Well, you've read the notes, the notes have made you svelte, but hopefully you haven't eaten a smelt or worn a pelt whilst reading the svelte notes.  Now it is time to post until the svelte cows come home in their Speedos.

After posting three very long posts at the end of yesterday, I can say that:

In my DVD player:  Salaam "Bombay Dreams" (it was cheap).  After that will be the original "The Manchurian Candidate."

In my CD player:  Sweet Smell of Success by Marvin Hamlisch and Craig Carnelia.

In my VCR:  a tape of Thursday night's Comedy Central line-up:  "The Graham Norton Effect" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."  But before that, however, I will watch Wednesday night's Comedy Central line-up:  "South Park," "Reno 911" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

Now it's late and I must sleep. ::)

DVD Player: the new release of Lion King 2: Simba's Pride.  I haven't gotten to the feature yet (the real reason to look forward to it is Suzanne Pleshette's vocal work as the villian.  However, there is a new short, called One By One, on the second disc that is very well done, telling it's simple story of children making and flying kites without a word of dialogue.  The multi-plane work is among the best I've seen.

CAR CD PLAYER:  Last Monday, I tried playing some music while taking the younger grandlad to the store, while der Brucer drove.  Little William was bored by everything I had on hand.  Carnival of the Animals wasn't any good.  Brent Barrett wasn't "cool."  It seems the only music he likes is what he's heard on cartoons, and even that is very limited to what is on Nickelodeon.  I am not impressed.

DRPANNI - I used to watch a Canadian sitcom, but I forget the name of it....grrrrrrrrrrrrr.....a couple of brothers....one always wore some kind of wacky sweater or something....I remember it made me laugh, but I forget the details.  Oh my!

Well we spent most of the rehearsal "folding in" the new guy. Whew!  Late work....but of course before that, the guy who quit showed up and said he "didn't mean it."  Horrible scene....oh my....well the board of directors is "going to hear all about how I was kicked out of the show...." and all that.  Oh my.  I love drama onstage....but out in the auditorium, it is very boring and time consuming....whew!

DVD PLAYER - I Love Lucy - the complete second season, including "Job Switching", "The Operetta", the baby episodes, and "Never Do Business with Friends" (Look what happened to YOUR washing machine!"

CD Player - Patty Duke's Greatest Hits

VHS - Lawrence of Arabia!

watched BIG BROTHER tonight, the last half hour anyway, and was amazed at the face-off between the party leaving and the often-on-the-chopping-block Marvin. But I didn't blame him. The One leaving was attempting to use some sort of threat/intimidation about having power as a member of the jury, and it just sounded like sour grapes to me.

I don't know, maybe it depends on if you like A or not, but I completely see things a different way.

I didn't find what happened to be an sort of intimidation.  I think a point was being made.  These people are on the jury.  THE JURY VOTES FOR THE WINNER OF BIG BROTHER.  A was just pointing out how stupid most of these players are.

Karen, who I haven't liked much these past few weeks, actually is playing it smart.  While Jennifer and Diane snubbed A all week, KAREN decided to approach A.  And because of that she has a chance to get some votes.

IMO, Marv, Diane and Nakomis blew it big time.

CD - THE FROGS because I am seeing the updated version tomorrow; the totally unnecessary new recording of LUCKY STIFF - nothing wrong with it, but BK already did an excellent recording with much of the same cast

DVD - COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA - A very faithful film version (with Shirley Booth adding an Oscar® to the Tony® she already won for the role).  What a wonderful play.  Of course I am a big Inge fan.  His output may not have been as extensive as Williams or Miller, but the quality is every bit as good as the best of either of them.  In a period of about 10 years he wrote COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA, BUS STOP, PICNIC and DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS.  Does anyone know of a good bio of Inge? I'd like to know more about him.

VHS - Nothing

CASSETTE - The CBS RADIO THEATRE version of BRAVE NEW WORLD, narrated by Huxley himself.  I've never read it, but on the basis of this adaptation I plan to.

By the way, was Shirley Booth a descendent of the Edwin/John Wilkes dynasty?

I've always been a big Inge fan as well.  These days he's almost like the forgotten mid-20th century playwright.

I know he grappled with his homosexuality and alcoholism, but it seems other playwrights bouts with those demons (Williams) and marriages to screen icons (Miller) got more press.  And in restrospect, as good as some of Inge's work is, it is probably not up to the level of the best of Williams and Miller.  But it's still better than the lesser works of those other two, and he doesn't deserve to be forgotten.

It seems that I vaguely recall a bio of him coming out in the early to mid 80s.  Whether or not I read it, I can't recall.

And I do not believe that our beloved Hazel was at all related to the assassin of a President of these here United States.

YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE, THE BIRDS, and my favorite ROME ADVENTURE!

DR WEL - I have seen a few bigraphical chapters about William Inge...but no full biography.  I know his papers are in a college somewhere just waiting to be culled and written about.

PICNIC (the play) is probably my favorite, although COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA and THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS are also particular favorites.

As DRSTUART wrote, he seemed to have a sad life and did not enjoy his success very much....

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, fellow DRs, and my heartiest good wishes to those who share September 3rd with me.

I, too, would love to read a good biography of William Inge. His plays are still performed all the time around here, so I know there is still interest in his work. Funny, he won a couple of Pulitzers and an Oscar, but none of his plays ever won the Best Play Tony. Isn't that interesting!

I pulled out the Ted Chapin FOLLIES book, and it seems that "Uptown-Downtown" was replaced because audiences weren't making the connection between "hyphenated Harriet" and Phyllis Stone. Also, the powers that be felt "The Story of Lucy and Jessie" had a more Cole Porter ring to it since many of the songs were deliberately pastiche reconceptions of older ZIEGFELD FOLLIES (and other revues) numbers.

DR MattH:  I think you have the proper take on what transpired on Big Brother 5 last night.

Adria is totally in denial that she has, in any way, done anyone wrong. She chooses, instead, to adopt a hypocritical attitude toward having done to her and Natalie what she and Natalie did when she was HOH and what they both did to Will.

Marvin correctly called her out on her using the Bible (and in her nominations of Will and Marvin, using a dream in which Jesus came to her and told her to nominate them) to justify her actions.  She's a looney tune with a looney tune sister.  She's that most horrible of things -- a fanatic.

Her kindly feelings toward the idiot Michael (aka Cowboy the Snitch) and Karen are hilariously odd. Michael has aligned himself with every "asshole" in the house.  He has trashed his real sister -- who has been the one, TRULY honest player, who plays with INTEGRITY -- and called Adria his sister.  Michael thinks he's a stud, that America loves him and that he has an unlimited future in acting/entertainment.  He constantly sucks up to his betters and presumes he's one of them.  I admit that's a crass way for me to put it, but that's the way he comes off to me...because he honestly believes he's better than his real sister who has outclassed him in every respect during this game.

It took about 15 minutes last night before I realized that his comment, "What a wake we've had", was actually referring to the "week" rather than some commemoration of a dearly departed soul (it could have been Natalie).  That's entertainment...oh, yeah!

Drew is spinelessness personified.  I have zero respect for him and I hope he's brought down soon.

I thought his nominations were truly indicative of his trustworthiness as a person and player.  I hope the male nominee wins golden power of veto.

It will take a miracle for the two best/most worthy players to make it to the final two.  Those two are Nakomis/Jennifer and Marvin.

Karen's a candidate for third place, but her little act has worn out its welcome (i.e., poor helpless overpressured me...I'm going to faint if I have to express a true opinion).

They're a wierd, wierd group!

My adventures with the Adelphia TV Repair Person:
The sound on my TV suddenly went wacko a few days ago. I replugged everything, but it didn't help. So Adelphia showed up this morning. I let him in the backdoor of my guest house so that he didn't enter through the bedroom - unseemly - plus the wonderdog was locked in there so he wouldn't bark at the Adelphia man. So when I went out to the yard to tell him to come to the back, I walked through a spiderweb or something that had been built during the night. Fine. So as the repairman is doing his work, I keep hearing a strange buzzing. I'm thinking it's the TV until I realize that it's coming from my hair. EWWWWWWW! i shook my hair, brushed it, yelled at it -- and the buzzing creature is gone. But may I repeat... EWWWWWW!!!
The repairman reconfigured everything so that the digital cable box is now connected directly to the TV, rather than coming throught the VCR -- something the person who first set up the operation said couldn't be done. The only thing is that my VCR now no longer works. This guy says that's where the sound problem was and that my VCR is a goner. I dunno, folks. But he did give me a new remote. The fault is in my TV I do believe, in that it doesn't have the proper outlets at the back, so I have to unplug and replug if I want to watch a DVD. When I move one of these days, I'll get a new TV. A new VCR might be more imminent as I do tape things.

I don't think saying anyone has the "proper take" is right.  We just disagree.  I'm surprised that you guys feel as you do.  But I guess a lot of it has to do with what each person thinks Adria's motives were.   I still think they were good.

I just read the canoe site, and some posters have felt as you guys do.  However John explained why he disagrees (he seems to feel the same way as I do).

I also disagree with you about Marvin.  Yes, he sort of had some decent points.  But Adria was not trying to disrespect anyone with her goodbye speech.  She was merely explaining the reality.  Those houseguests who shunned her this week are stupid.  And I find Marvin made a stupid move last night by making that scene.  He lost Adria's vote.  She will tell Nat, so he lost her vote too.  And he lost Cowboy/Drew/Karen's vote (because they support Adria and think Marvin made a fool of himself).

With that one move, Marvin lost any chance of winning.

To me a game like BB involves thinking.  Even if Marvin wanted to voice his opinion, he shouldn't have done it that way.

Quote
Her kindly feelings toward the idiot Michael (aka Cowboy the Snitch) and Karen are hilariously odd. I have not been thrilled with Cowboy in the past.  But I respect his loyalty to others.  If he gives his word, you know you can put it in the bank.

I do not find Jen classy.  I did appreciate her honesty in the beginning. But now I do not care for her.  She made promises to Cowboy (not to nominate him) and I'm pretty sure she would have done so had she won HOH.  She was too vindictive re: will's eviction.

And don't even get me started on will. He says he was the bigger person.  I have never seen anything so much opposite of that.  I am disgusted by his behavior now.

Quote

I actually think Drew is brilliant.  I think his noms could work big time. I think the female nom is a ruse.

It's funny but I could not disagree more with your choice for final two.  Right now I hate diane the most.  Then Marvin and jen.

I would like drew to win.

Oh and btw, I'm sorry I disagree with most of your points.  I'm not trying to be argumentative.  We just seem to come at things from a totally different point of view.

I do respect your feelings. And I know that MattH and some other DRs agree with you.

Thanks for the Inge info Jrand.  I think I'll order that book.

Speaking of books, I am currently reading GERTRUDE LAWRENCE AS MRS. A by Richard Aldrich, her husband for the last ten years of her life.  This covers the years after STAR, but in STAR she meets Aldrich after LADY IN THE DARK, whereas they were already married when she did it.

By the way the DVD release of NEW YORK, NEW YORK has been delayed from December to February 15.  And a new 6 CD Soundtrack set of THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT will be out shortly after the first of the year with much of the extra material different from the now out-of-print 6 CD set released in 1995.

DR Jennifer:

re: Big Brother 5 -- disagreement:

No offense taken.  I fully expect us to disagree and to post our differing views.

That's what makes it interesting.

As for the use of "the proper take" -- it IS the proper take, "in MY opinion", of course!

:)

As for Marvin losing all those votes....I'm absolutely NOT sure about that at all.  I think most of the houseguests feel the same way about Adria.

All the arguments you use to favor Drew and Karen and Cowboy (and in absentia, Adria), are equally applicable to favor Jennifer and Diane and Marvin, IMO.

We simply have our favorites and we don't like it when someone hurts them or doesn't like them.

I ain't buying another set...no way, nohow.  Not until it's offered at a HUGE discount like the last one was two months AFTER I paid big bucks for it.  I saw that 6-CD set go for $25.

I guarantee it'll happen to the next version.

I am here in Sunny LA. We were over two hours late getting in. They could not find a 5th flight attendant to take the flight. Everyone was booking off. They finally found one. Didn't get to the hotel 1am (LA time) and it was at least another hour or so before I got to sleep.

Today the Coles Notes tour of LA for my friend, lunch with my cousin comedy writer David Shayne and then to the Hudson Theater to see What If? Looking forward to seeing it.

Try to catch up tomorrow with some pictures. I will also catch up with all the notes and other postings when I get back

And oh yes I lost my car keys somewhere in the Miami Airport. Will deal with that when I get back.

I think dear readers Jay and Jose and cronies must have really tied one on not to have made their usual late night postings (not the cronies, just Jay and Jose).

I'm here, I'm here.  (Dear Reader Jose, however, remains under the spell of Mr. Sandman.)

As faithfully reported by our Dear BK, indeed I did return to see What If?  A Musical Revue again last night and it was even better the second time around.  (Oh.  A Sammy Cahn/Jimmy Van Heusen reference.)  It was much tighter than on opening night; last night the first act just flew by.  Tammy's new song is infinitely superior to the one that it replaced and I could see how the cast members have grown nicely into their songs, dance routines and various schtick.

I brought a couple of friends with me to the show, and was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at the theatre to run into two other friends to whom I had recommended the show.  All four of my friends--"cronies," according to Dear BK--had a great time and will spread further word-of-mouth.

After the show Dear Reader Jose and I went to The Other Side.  No, not that Other Side, but rather a piano bar in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles.  There's a gal by the name of Lori Donato who plays and sings there on Thursday nights whom I really enjoy, and this is the second time I've enticed Dear Reader Jose to come with me to enjoy her talents.

Miss Donato is very happy to share the microphone and her piano with willing guests, and I can tell you that one thing I learned last night is that Dear Reader Jose has a beautifully sweet tenor voice.  Some in the bar were being a little rowdy and noisy last night, but once Dear Reader Jose stepped up to the mic and began "I Have Dreamed," the whole place quieted down and gave him its full attention and, at the song's conclusion, a hearty ovation.  He followed that triumph by tickling the ivories and accompanying Lori as she sang "Hey There," also to much acclaim.

It's true, we were at the bar well past the point at which my coach had turned back into a pumpkin and my steeds into unseemly rodents, so we did not get home until very late and were remiss in posting our late night thoughts.

DR Jennifer: re: Big Brother 5 -- disagreement:

No offense taken.  I fully expect us to disagree and to post our differing views. That's what makes it interesting.

As for the use of "the proper take" -- it IS the proper take, "in MY opinion", of course! :)

:)

Quote
As for Marvin losing all those votes....I'm absolutely NOT sure about that at all.  I think most of the houseguests feel the same way about Adria.

Read the canoe link I gave earlier.  I believe MANY of them were not happy with Marv.

Quote
We simply have our favorites and we don't like it when someone hurts them or doesn't like them.

I suppose that could be true.  But I try to be as objective as I can. For instance while I like Adria, I know she made a dumb move nominating Will the way she did.

And I've actually gone from disliking to liking certain people.   In the beginning I didn't like the way Marvin was acting.  But he started to grow on me.  And knowing how big a fan he was of Y&R, I was thrilled for him.

Also, I hadn't cared for Cowboy.  But he is sort of growing on me. I liked how he befriended Adria when she was down.

And Karen, who you guys know I've disliked, made some smart moves this week.  She didn't ruin her chances by keeping Adria.  Yet she also befriended her.

And as for Drew, he wasn't always my favorite.  I didn't like when he was with the 4 Horsemen. And how he was working both alliances.

But his character has impressed me of late.  I like how he's been friendly with Cowboy and Adria.  ANd he seems like a really decent guy.

On the way home, Dear Reader made a comment about the beauty of the Colorado Street bridge in Pasadena, which is not the first time he had done so when we were in the car together.  It is a beautiful arched bridge that curves in an S-shaped manner as it crosses the arroyo.  There are unusual light standards illuminating the bridge, as well.

So, good host as I try to be, I got off the freeway so we could drive across the bridge, which was a pleasant experience.  As we started, we heard a loud noise, which I thought was perhaps a rock being thrown by a tire into the passenger side wheel well in the rear.  As we neared my house, however, I realized one of my tires was flat.  Flat as a pancake.  (Oh.  A DuPars reference.)  The noise, I have deduced, was the sound of a blowout.  Luckily, I was but a block from my house and we were able to crawl home safely.  AAA was here this morning to put on the spare (by far too manly a task for me to undertake myself) and I am leaving now to get a new tire.  Luckily, I had road hazard insurance, so this should be a cost-free transaction.

Jay and Jose - Your evening sounds like it was even more fun than mine, if that's possible. BTW - Did I mention that I was offered chocolate chip cookies by the ladies who sold me my surprisingly half-price wallet? I was too full of See's chocolates to accept the kind offer, but I tell you about it so that you can TRULY measure the fabulousness of my evening, weigh it against DRs Jay and Jose's -- and then judge for yourself.

Jennifer: I think it's called "rose sauce" (no accent of course).  I found some English websites that call it that.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN AN EPISODE OF THE KING OF KENSINGTON! And now I feel left out.  My parents used to love it supposedly - we even have Sarah Waxman's cookbook (supposedly a real collector's item) called "The King's Wife's Cookbook"!  Yet somehow I always missed it on tv.

Today I learned that after the American Revolution - for which taxation was a big issue - the Revolutionaries' taxes actually went UP ten times!  The things you learn!

JRand - have you been watching the World Cup of Hockey?  Did you see the god-awful pee-coloured jerseys the Cdn team wore in its home opener?  Ewwwwwwwwwww.

I am going out for dinner and then to see a movie (Vanity Fair) with DR Andrea tonight.  I'll report tomorrow!

Good Morning!  -Well, it's now Good Afternoon!

As DR Jay mentioned in his earlier post, I did indeed do some singing and some playing after the show last night.  -Now, I'm just trying to remember the last time I sang solo... Hmm... However, a couple of years ago, I did have a small set of songs I would do here and there for some post-show cabarets... I'll have to dig that list up sometime.  Ah, well...

RE: Rosee sauce - Hmmm, doesn't ring a "dinner bell" with me, but it sounds like it could be something like a "bolognese sauce" (which is basically a meat sauce with cream stirred into it), or a "vodka sauce" (which is tomato and cream based).  I may have to Google this later myself just for curiosities sake.

Well, I need to finish up some stuff around here before heading out.  My laptop was acting up yesterday, and, apparently, a couple of files I was working on ended up getting corrupted in some sort of manner - ???  Ah, well...  But everything seems fine so far this morning.  But I'm gonna go re-save them under different names just to be safe - and back-up some things.  So...

But before I go...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BIRTHDAY BOYS!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BIRTHDAY GIRL!

Or, if you prefer:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BIRTHDAY MEN!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BIRTHDAY WOMAN!

Hmmm... ;)

Laters...

Last night's performance was very good; the audience was a bit subdued at first, but they seemed to get into the spirit of things after a while. This happens sometimes when there is a preponderance of elderly people; it takes them a bit longer to catch on to what we're doing, but I must say, once they do they're a great audience.

BK,

I have a friend, Deb Filler, who does a one-woman show. (It's about growing up Jewish in New Zealand, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, and it deals with various issues - most of them centered around food. (Her father was a baker.) In fact, she bakes a chalah - which is timed to finish when the show ends - and distributes it to the audience.)

Deb adores playing to this type of audience. She feels they bring a wealth of knowledge - including theatregoing experience - with them, and I know she gives them 110%.

All this talk of THE KING OF KENSINGTON led me to Google. I was curious to see if it was still remembered. Is it ever!
But this is for DR Emily, who seems to be the intellectual type, ya know. Your scholar. Little did I know as we slaved into the dawn on Thursday nights before the final taping, that we were creating a cultural icon. I thought we were just going for a litttle song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants. So take a look at this, DR Emily (from a much longer piece):

Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference (SCMS)
Minneapolis, Minnesota

....On the question of national cinema, Maeve Connolly presented a thoroughly engaging paper, again despite the early morning start, on Traveller (Comeford 1982). In it, she dissected the film treatment of Travellers, a sub-national minority group in Ireland. Similarly engaging, yet closer to home, was the paper presented by Canadian Sarah Matheson, who discussed the Canadian television show The King of Kensington. She analysed the ways in which the production constructed Canadian nationhood in terms of its cultural diversity, a phenomenon that is difficult to see paralleled in any recent Australian production of this sort.
Australian cinema was most significantly represented in the paper by Jennifer L. Gauthier, who – in a different session – spoke of the stolen generation, Aboriginal filmmaking and Rabbit Proof Fence. She argued that Noyce's film had made a significant contribution to the process of reconciliation. Her perspective was all the more interesting given the freshness of an outsider's point of view....

So happy that the new song is doing what you wanted it to....and the Molly/Annie premise is just too too intriguing.  Does said song have a title....and even if it does, what would Benjamin Kritzer have called it when he heard it (not knowing said actual title, of course)?

Speaking of books, I am currently reading GERTRUDE LAWRENCE AS MRS. A by Richard Aldrich, her husband for the last ten years of her life.  This covers the years after STAR, but in STAR she meets Aldrich after LADY IN THE DARK, whereas they were already married when she did it.

Not true. In STAR she meets him in London and then years later she runs into him again at a birthday party in her honor and is insulted/charmed enough to go to Cape Cod to appear in SKYLARK. All this was pre-LADY IN THE DARK.

You are correct that she doesn't MARRY him in the film until after the opening of LADY. Maybe that's what you meant.

VCR: Jayne Mansfield in IT HAPPENED IN ATHENS which I very much enjoyed.

CD: Various things but nothing new.

And my Bollywood movies for this weekend:

RUSTOM E HIND (1965). Another Bollywood sword and sandal type film. I watched it last night and it was a bit confusing and had way too many comedy relief characters, but it was OK. Stars Dara Singh, a handsome former professional wrestler who seemed to make a living out of this type of film in the 1960s. He also played Tarzan, Hercules, and other muscular heroes during that decade and is still making films today.

Also stars the lovely Mumtaz who reminds me of a Hindu LESLIE PARRISH.

I did, FINALLY, get to YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER today. Enjoyed the film as much as ever, but I wish I could say the transfer was never lovelier. There were a few scratches and splotches, and while overall it looked nice, the whole thing just didn't shimmer the way CASABLANCA or THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE do, or even Warners' lesser B&W DVDs like KEY LARGO and THE MALTESE FALCON or NOW, VOYAGER.

Now, I know these catalogue releases are not going to get the scrub and brush-up that something like CITIZEN KANE or CASABLANCA did. There just isn't enough demand for the film on DVD to warrant that kind of expenditure. BUT, on the back of the case, they've written "Remastered in High Definition." Pardon me if I say that I just don't believe that having seen this finished product.

Today I learned that after the American Revolution - for which taxation was a big issue - the Revolutionaries' taxes actually went UP ten times!  The things you learn!

Ummm....I think someone left something out.  The issue wasn't just "taxation" -- it was taxation "without representation."

The colonies were being heavily taxed, but were given no voice in British government.  The people were essentially being treated as slaves...making the Colonies work for the good of the British Empire but having absolutely no say in anything regarding how they, themselves, would or should be treated.

BIG MISTAKE, that!

Oh for DR Jose, who seems to be a cooking expert.  Rosee sauce is basically a cream sauce mixed with some type of tomato sauce.  It's sort of like alfredo sauce, but pink (and without all the parmesan).

Here's a review some might enjoy reading...

Sorry I'm late in posting it but I ran into it -- ouch!! -- just a few minutes ago!

BIRTHDAY WISHES TO THE BOYS AND GIRL of the day!

Walt Disney: 75 Years of Music
Sun Aug 22, 3:14 PM ET
Joel Hirschhorn, STAFF
Hollywood Bowl; 17, 376 seats; $106 top
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Assn. presents "The Great American Concert with Fireworks," with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conducted by John Mauceri. Reviewed Aug. 20, 2004.
Special guest appearances: Jodi Benson, Mary Costa, Judy Kuhn, Paige O'Hara, Lisa Vroman, Stuart Ambrose, Alan Menken, Dick Van Dyke and California State U. Fullerton University Singers with John Alexander, director.
Nostalgic, childlike enthusiasm for Disney music was clearly conveyed in conductor John Mauceri's opening remarks at the Hollywood Bowl tribute to Disney's 75-year musical legacy. Mauceri's beaming expressions lit up two large screens, and this personal emotion gave flavor and drive to a Disney Classics Overture that contained bustling renditions of "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo," "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "You Can Fly." But remainder of the program took flight only fitfully as a series of selections either soared or sagged until the solidly thrilling "Lion King" climax.
Rimsky-Korsakov's "Bumble Boogie" from 1948's "Melody Time" featured Jack Fina's rousing arrangement and skillful four hand pianistic contributions by Mitchell Hanlon and David Loeb. Stuart Ambrose teamed with Lisa Vroman on "Someday My Prince Will Come," confirming the charisma he displayed in Disneyland's popular "Snow White." The concert first faltered with an over-extended "Bambi," spotlighting retired opera star Mary Costa. Costa's narration against the Frank Churchill/Edward Plumb underscore was efficient, but her segment -- which sorely needed clips -- felt as though a children's recording had been uneasily pushed into the proceedings. Additional clips in general would have created a more vivid connection to the tunes.
Mauceri's excellent arrangement of the "Sleeping Beauty" suite did full justice to Tchaikovsky's themes. Less exciting was James Horner's exuberant "Rocketeer," a piece that lost power in comparatively mild orchestration and never rocketed to requisite heights.
As if on a pogo stick, the concert lifted up again with Dick Van Dyke. The ultimate pro danced delightfully and duetted with Vroman on a medley of "Mary Poppins" songs. He kicked up his heels during Richard and Robert Sherman's "Supercalifragilisticexpialodocious" and "It's a Jolly Holiday With Mary," and the Van Dyke-Vroman pair offered winning examples of showbiz savvy and style.
Eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken accompanied himself vocally on piano with selections from "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," "Beauty and the Beast" and other hit films. Menken, an underrated master of melody, deserves increased name recognition, but his vocals were unsteady, and he raced through songs without giving them nuanced treatment. He was better and more relaxed on ballads such as "Go the Distance" from "Hercules."
One of the evening's best moments came when Menken introduced Jodi Benson, and Benson brought out the fervent passion in "Part of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid." Paige O'Hara put over "Beauty and the Beast," despite pitch lapses, and Judy Kuhn delivered a strong and intense "Colors of the Wind."
Hans Zimmer's "Lion King" theme, majestically played and sung by the Cal State Fullerton University Singers, furnished a worthy musical accompaniment to the Bowl's fireworks, splashes of exploding color that concluded appropriately on a lion's face. Elton John and Tim Rice's "The Circle of Life" placed the stirring seal on a show that served up memorable music without supplying a totally satisfying sense of Disney's vast musical history.

You are welcome Tomovoz and please do post more flowers.

JRand-Bogie is named for Humphrey Bogart, the song is Boogie.  Is that what you were referring to? ???

Matt H have a nice time and a delicious dinner tonight.

Jennifer have you looked on line?  I’m amazed the double has been discontinued.  Good luck.

After the show Dear Reader Jose and I went to The Other Side.  No, not that Other Side, but rather a piano bar in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles. ...
Been there, under a number of names.

No, I've always been known as Woody, but the bar was known as the Toy Tiger when I first dropped by.  It's also been called Houston's, and probably a few other things (but let's keep it polite).

From those who remember the Toy Tiger, one of the regular players there, Rudy De La Mar, can often be found at the OZZ supperclub in Orange County.  Either that, or he can be found in Chicago.  As for the favorite waitress/hostess at the time, Mary, a feisty little white-haired broad, last I heard she had retired to Palm Springs.

Jennifer I found this rosee sauce recipe.  I also found a site that sells packaged rosee sauce with parmesan cheese.

Can any cooking people here tell me what you guys call rosee sauce (with an accent on the first e).

I know that is what we call it here.  But I'm trying to find a recipe for it. And it's only giving me french recipes.  So I was wondering if you guys have a different spelling. Thanks.

(it's the creamy tomato style sauce).
Oh, like French cooks are going to give you anything BUT?

Let's try something classical, a sauce Aurore.

This starts with a Sauce Veloute, which is a white stock (such as chicken or veal) that has been thickened with a butter roux.  James Peterson gives the following:  five cups stock to a roux made of two ounces butter and two ounces flour.  In one saucepan, bring the stock to a simmer.  In another saucepan, gently melt the butter and then add the flour, stirring over medium heat until the flour starts to smell pleasantly toasty.

Let the roux cool slightly for a minute, then whisk the stock into the roux.  Bring it all back to a simmer while whisking.  Let this gently cook for about an hour ( :o), then strain.

A classic Sauce Aurore takes three cups of Sauce Veloute and adds a cup of tomato puree.  Either reduce over low heat to thicken, or add a small amount of stock to thin.  Strain (again!), add 4 ounces of butter, and adjust the seasoning.  Makes about a quart of sauce.  ( :o :o)

Peterson was obviously writing for professional cooks.  You might want to cut down on the recipe size by reducing everything proportionately.

I only have this recording, because the first cd releases of the Original Off Broadway Cast were painfully transferred to cd with hideous results - too much high end, too little low, Rita sounded as if she were screeching, so I replaced that early cd with The Japan Tour, which has some good points mixed in with the bad.  I haven't heard the latest remaster of the original. . .

I just read an article on Playbill.com:  Republican Convention Hits Broadway Right in the Box Office (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/88225.html)!  It says that the RNC was bad for Broadway! :o Among all the stats, there is this one quote from producer Emanuel Azenberg:

"Other than Sept. 11, this is the single worst week on Broadway in half a century... You have to go back to the Kennedy assassination to find something that has hurt us as much as the Republicans have."

So, do you think that it's because Avenue Q wasn't on the "approved" RNC Broadway list?? ::)

Thanks for that beautiful picture of Miss Luker!

I'm a lurker for Luker!

I was reading past posts about A Baker's Wife -- based on that French cult movie La Femme Du Boulanger -- and i'm confused by the confusion of most from the fact that the wife is not "lovable"!
Please, don't blame the American adaptors; it's ALL in the original play by Marcel Pagnol. "We" have no problem "hating" Geneviève!

Maybe I don't understand the whole thing so excuse me then...
I've never seen the musical myself, but I sure love the score!

5:50 am here: International Herald Tribune just in, and this is what i find!

The actress Susan Sarandon will narrate an 11-part radio documentary series about the life of the composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. Just about every aspect of his life and career will be explored in "Leonard Bernstein: An American Life" through the words of his correspondence and interviews with more than 100 people who knew and worked with him, including the conductor Marin Alsop, the songwriter Betty Comden and the composer Stephen Sondheim. The longtime music director of the New York Philharmonic, Bernstein led orchestras around the world, was a top pianist and composed numerous works, including the music for "West Side Story." He died in 1990 at 72.
