Title: THE RESTFUL SATURDAY DURING WHICH I DID NOT MUCH OF ANYTHING

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were restful and didn't do much of anything, and now it is time for you to post until the restful cows come home.

Well, I'm home.  Yesterday was a weird day of theater happenings.  The new musical version of A Room With a View was, I thought, very good.  The performers were all good actors and had wonderful voices.  I've loved Patti Cohenour since Big River and The Mystery of Edwin Drood and my friend Jenny Shotwell has a wonderful operatic voice.  The roll that she plays in the first act sings only in Italian and very operatically...she definitely has the chops (she plays the maid in the second act and doesn't sing much at all).  The rest of the cast were uniformly wonderful and well cast.

I really enjoyed the score, and there's a lot of it and a lot of underscoring.  The score was written by Jeffrey Sweet, who wrote the music to Triumph of Love and the "Book and Conception" are by Marc Acito who wrote the novel, "How I Paid for College."  What was weird was that they had to stop the show!  About three or four songs before the end of the first act, I noticed some people walking up and down the far right aisle and tried to ignore it (or seats were row V right in the center).  Then all of a sudden a woman's voice came over the loud speaker saying that they needed to stop the show because there was "an emergency in the house."  The house lights came up and the people going up and down the aisle were EMTs!  Evidently someone had a medical emergency and they eventually took him (or her?) out of the theater on a gurney.  While the show was stopped, most people were chatting quietly and waiting.  After about five minutes or so, they started pretty much right where they left off and finished the first act without another incident.  In all the years of theater going, I've never experienced this before. :-\

Then during the second act (coincidentally, also about three songs before the end of the act), they had to stop the show AGAIN.  This time the female god-voice said that they had to stop for technical reasons.  This break was a little more than 10 minutes.  They fixed whatever they had to fix (they didn't specify what needed to be fixed) and the show started again and finished to a standing ovation.  I really liked it a lot.  The set was beautiful, the costumes were great and the nekkid swimming scene was very funny and very nekkid!  The three men in the scene didn't turn and face the audience when they were out of the water (they really had a pool with water!), but they were very definitely really nekkid. ;)

During the pre-show announcement, they always say that you can come back with your ticket and see the show again for only $25.  I may actually do it this time.  We'll see if it happens, but I'd really like to. :)

Then, we headed south.  My sister needed to go to IKEA, so we did.  The first place we headed for was the restaurant.  We were all pretty hungry, so we ate first.  My mom hadn't been there in a long time, so she wanted to walk around the whole store.  My sister and I went and got the stuff that she wanted, and waited near the exit for my mom.  It really didn't take too long...probably only about 45 minutes, including the time it took to eat.  After we left there, my sister wanted to go to Bed, Bath and Beyond to get a coffee urn for the PFLAG board, and it wasn't available at the Olympia store.  Fortunately, it was pretty close to IKEA, so that didn't take long, at all.  We then got back on I-5 and headed home.

The other weird theater happening was at "Chamber Music."  I got to theater about 15 minutes before the 10:00 show was supposed to start...in plenty of time.  I guess the 8:00 pm show went well enough.  I was chatting with another board member at the entrance and we noticed that there were only two people in the audience.  It turns out that they were former students of one of the actresses.  Our stage manager Christian (a good friend of TCB's) spoke with Pug the director and the cast and asked them if they would be willing to come back to a different performance.  This was a black comedy and comedy is really hard when there are only two people in the audience.  They were very friendly and outgoing themselves and totally understood.  They said that they would if Kate, their former teacher, would do something like stand on her head or sing a song!  Kate said that she'd sing if she had back-up.  So, Kate sang "I'll Never Grow Up" from Peter Pan (she was just in a production last month) and the other women in the show sang the echo back-up parts.  It was all a lot of fun and we cancelled the 10:00 pm show.  I've never had that happen before!  Pug and everyone decided to add another performance on the last night, since that's probably the best time to add another show.  So, we all left the theater and I fed my friend Margo's cats and am now home telling the incredibly long story of my day, yesterday. :D

Oh, the actor who plays the doctor in "Chamber Music" is a pretty good photographer.  Click HERE (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mythicseabass/sets/72157644321021842/) for pictures that he took during the final preview performance.

DR VIXMOM I am glad the materials arrived and that they were useable. I don't think that cartoon is in regular rotation right now because of the violence.

LIL ABNER was sort of the Doonesbury of its day, if I recall, and Capp was very political and satirical in his writing.....if I recall.   I remember that he really took out after Joan Baez for a long time....

Good morning, all! I had a great many nightmares last night: one about a rehearsal/performance of an opera based on DRACULA, conducted  by Rob Berman, some musical Kelli O'Hara was in, and something endless involving Ben Davis and other friends.

This morning, I will work on the Faith Prince-anthony Qarlow music, break, and watch my two Netflix DVDs.

Yes, DR George, a former friend.  Like I said, he's a piece of work.

Yes, DR JRand63, in Dogpatch Joan Baez became, as I recall, Joanie Phoney. That's about when I stopped reading LI'L ABNER; I much preferred the liberal Al Capp to the man he became.

Yesterday DR DRUXY mentioned SAMMY FAIN & PAUL FRANCIS WEBSTER

Here are two rare (obscure) songs they wrote for films that most people no long remember.

1) This song from the movie The Stepmother is sung in two different styles in the opening and closing of the film. The movie now shows up in collections of other public domain movies like "Drive-In Favorites"

The song is called "Strange Are The Ways Of Love". This is the end title version.

A side note is there was another song with the exact same title that was nominated in 1959 for the film The Young Land.

http://youtu.be/79L310U7wIk (http://youtu.be/79L310U7wIk)

2) The most obscure film is "Half A House" and the song is "A World That Never Was". I've been looking for a copy of the film for the past three years with no success.

(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTY1WDUyMA==/$(KGrHqN,!p8F!,eIG4bVBQZK79IE9w~~60_1.JPG)

DR DRUXY tells the story in his first memoir how he got the Academy voters to hear the song They set up an 800-number so that Academy voters could call in and hear Fain's demo recording of the song.

http://youtu.be/MkLq_W22-do (http://youtu.be/MkLq_W22-do)  It starts at 1:34

This is taken from the film.

I thank DR Druxy for allowing me to hear the "1-800 version"  :D

Yes DR ELMORE - I remember Joanie Phoanie very well.

My favorite Joan Baez moment on television was when she was on the Donald O'Conner Show, a short-lived Mike Douglas type afternoon talk show.  She was being very surly and not answering Donald's questions or engaging in much conversation.  This was when her husband was in trouble for avoiding the draft and might have been in jail, and she was also having legal troubles of her own.

Finally she snapped at O'Conner:  You've got questions there on the card, just ask them.

So Donald replied:  Okay, sister, I'll ask you....how does it feel to be up the creek without a paddle?

LOL...Joanie had no response.....

That is a terrible rendition of the song.  It needs to be sung by an older person.

Sammy Fain's demo recording nails it.

My memory (once again) fails me, Mike.  How did I "allow" you to hear Fain's verison of the song?

And I remembered the dream with Ben Davis; Jason Graae was also in it, and Ben and I had gone to Jason to borrow or rent music for Ben to perform in a concert. I have a vague memory now that my dad's construction company was somehow involved in this mess.

Joan Baez and David Harris were very much against the war in Viet Nam. David went to prison for resisting the draft and anti-war activity. I was with sympathetic and doing my own resisting with most of my college theatre dept. My dad - "my country right or wrong" - did not approve at the time of my stance on the war, and he threw me and several friends from the theatre dept. wearing black arm bands after the Kent State shotings out of the house and told us we were not welcome. Things got very tense in my family for a lot of the 1970s, but shortly before he died, he told me I was right and that he had been wrong.

is it weird to give yourself vibes? I woke up with a massive migraine which is my least favorite illness in the world (as I was hospitalized once for one).

Unfortunately my fiorinol (sp?) was expired although I still had quiet a few pills left as I only get migraines every few years.

I was at 10/10 for pain now I am at 6/10 which is better but still uncomfortable.

I was hoping if I called the pharmacy where I got the pills that they might exchange a few of the old pills for some new ones. They wouldn't. I really don't see why not for something like this. There is nothing else I could use the pill for. I obviously have suffered from migraines. And I'm not asking for a refill as I still have the pills.

When I feel better this week I am going to go to the doctor and get a new prescription so this doesn't happen again.

I ended up taking the expired pills which work just not as well. I really hope this goes away soon.

Tuesday and Thursday morning are the banes of doing musicals at the HS -- we do morning performances for the regional elementary schools.  Oddly enough, they can be extraordinarily attentive and appreciative audiences.  But the rising at dawn's crack to get down there for those is a hideous joke played on the likes of me by emissaries from Hell.

Picked up the car this morning, and it drives like a new one.  It's shocking when you get something like a clutch replaced, because the wear and deterioration happen so slowly over the years that until things finally start going to hell in a handbasket (I wonder if anybody ever actually did that?), you just don't notice the incredible change in the feel of the pedal and the gear shifter and in the performance of the car in general.  And boy, I guess it needed that tune-up, too.  It purred for me all the way home.  Hey, I'm not making this up, you know.  It really purred!

Yes, it is ok to give yourself vibes.  I would have told you to use the expired pills and am glad you did.  It would have been illegal for the pharmacy to switch out the pills though I understand your frustration.  When you get the new script put a reminder on your calendar to renew the script when they expire.

Here the pharmacy would have sent a renewal request to the doctor.  Do they do that there?  I would call the office to request the renewal and not wait until you can go in, just in case.

FEEL BETTER!!!!

Here's a question I'll throw out there for anyone:

How do you memorize a song like "Jubilation T. Cornpone" or "The Country's in the Very Best of Hands?" There's a lot of verses, a lot of references, a lot of rapid-fire lyrics.

Do you just learn it by rote? Is there some kind of pneumonic mental trick that you use?

Redbox has "The Book Thief".  I want to see it but Keith still hasn't read the book.  DR Cilla, or anyone that has read the book, did you watch it yet?  I'm trying to decide if I should continue to wait for him to read it.

I haven't seen it yet

(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTY1WDUyMA==/$(KGrHqN,!p8F!,eIG4bVBQZK79IE9w~~60_1.JPG)

Maybe all copies are buried in the desert with the ATARI E.T. game.

thanks Drs Singdaw and Jane. Why would it be illegal for them to change a new pill for an expired one? They can see the prescription. The pain is now down to two or three out of ten. DR Jane I am actually not sure which doctor sent in the presription. I am also not sure which of two places I will go to get a new one. They are both five minutes away. One is a clinic and the other might be harder to get an appointment. It has rotating doctors.

I actually thought of an idea. I can order the sample first which is usually the first chapter. I will be able to see the formatting from that. I almost never use the sample option. I know some people sample books before buying them. But i never do that. The only time i might get the sample is if i am waiting for the library book but want to start the book sooner.

I'm glad you are feeling better.  If you have the bottle with the script it should state the name of the doctor, at least it would here.  If you recently ordered the prescription and they had already expired then I agree they should replace the pills.  On the other hand if you had the script a long time....scripts expires if you don't fill them after x number of days & you wouldn't have been able to fill it at all.

Even if it is legal I can imagine the paperwork for replacing, even if they charge you, expired pills could be complicated.  You hurt and you wanted your pills, I get it.

DR Jennifer, so sorry you're having a migraine, but glad that it's improving. I used to take Fiorinal long ago. It can be very effective. I recommend you try magnesium threonate, a new form of magnesium that gets up into the brain, which other form of mag cannot. It is ideal for migraines. I take Life Extension's Neuro Mag, but there are other brands available. You can either take it as-needed along with the Fiorinal when a migraine starts (take it immediately) or take it daily for a while to avoid migraines in the future. My osteopath tried it and completely eliminated her migraines. It's also helping her with headaches in general, which she says is a real feat.

Re expiration dates: software can be designed to expire on a certain date, but drugs cannot. Most prescriptions are given an expiration date one year after the date they are filled. I suspect this has a lot to do with selling more of the product. Expired drugs may not be as effective as fresh ones, but I know of no reason why they can't still be used, as long as the situation isn't critical. Oils are an exception, as they get rancid, but that's another thing altogether.

Hello all:

TOD:  No question, just advice!

To BK,

Here is my advice for a scratchy throat.

Talk softly, (Do not Whisper, this strains the vocal chords more than regular talking)

Rest, Lots of water and chicken soup.

Gargle, and avoid the outdoors as much as you can.

Also, do not sit under a fan or near a direct vent blowing cool air.

Feel better prayers to you!

The absolute weirdest thing happened earlier. I was reading HHW on my kindle. When I got off the wifi it went to the e-book I am reading. And then the kindle started talking. It was so strange. I know there is an audio that can read you the book (which I never use). And I don't thnk I hit anything. But it wasn't going to read me the book.. But it said "book adult contemporary' (the folder for the current e-book I am reading). Page  153 (the e-books don`t even show by page they show by %.  I wonder what I could have pressed to make the kindle do this. Or if it will stop.  At least it wasn`t reading the book. But that is still strange.

I don`t know how expired but I got it like 10 years ago. So it was quite expired.  She did tell me to take it just that it wouldn`t be 100% effective.  I only get migraines like every 2 or 3 or 4 years. So it`s not even something I like about.  I cannot read the doctor`s name. It is faded. I could just read the date and pharmacy phone number.

I personally can see both sides if you intend to read and watch the movie.  Yes you know extra details.  But I definitely agree with those who say that it can also hamper your enjoyment of the movie. So much is always left out in the movie that it is always upsetting especially if you watch the movie right after reading the book.  The movie was excellent. I really think that he will like it eve if he sees the movie first.

Demolition Angel by Robert Crais.

The back light on an eReader can really bother a migraine.  I think a black back light helps but I don't like using it.

The sample (chapters one and two) are fine.  The table of contents is good and there is no problems with the first two chapters. They are clear and the formatting is good.

I found out what I did to my kindle. I must have clicked "audio guide". I had no idea that was even a thing and have no idea how I clicked on it.

So the kindle version is working and not working. I sent the sample and will check that out.

Hmm...what's going on??

Oh sorry I meant one person said it was working and one said it wasn't,  See my new post. The sample was perfect.

There have been a few times when I read the book after seeing the movie, expecting the book to be better, and was greatly disappointed.  Dr. Zhivago was one of those.

I've never read an Elizabeth Gaskell novel.  After watching the wonderful adaptations of her novels on PBS I was going to and then chickened out.  I feared the books would not equal the wonderful series after reading some changes to the novels had been made.

My library has the book you recommended. Except that I forgot to save it to my account and now cannot remember the name.

Demolition Angel by Robert Crais.

The back light on an eReader can really bother a migraine.  I think a black back light helps but I don't like using it.

My kindle doesn't have a backlight. I read next to a lamp or if I am out I have a little clip on light.

Right, the reason I have the Nook.  I would gladly use a lamp if it didn't disturb Keith.

DR Jane (or anybody else who reads a lot) do you like books that are gut-wrenching and emotional.

I think so or I wouldn't read so many books about WWII.  It really depends on the book.  Why do you ask?  I like a large variety and try to alternate the books, not too many gut-wrenching or same type of topics in a row.

Matinee over and done with.  While we had full houses Friday and Saturday, today's was considerably down, though not what they'd normally consider a bad house, just more typical for a matinee.  And the audience's own energy level was nothing like the first two, but again, the reaction during the bows was pretty stupendous.

Now for an evening and a full day of freedom and rest.    :)

Neglected to mention this morning that I got four (count 'em) hours of sleep last night.

That's what happens when you and the director join a small but perfect group of people at their lovely home in Norwalk for drinks and smokes (yes, smokes -- a few of us indulged in some very nice cigars with our Manhattans in this guy's former sun porch which is now an enclosed, intimate bar/library/TV/music/smoking room complete with smoke-eaters).

It's also what happens when you leave there at 2:30 in the morning for your own home which is nearly an hour away, and you have to rise and shine at 7:30 to pick up car, et cetera, ad nauseum, etc.     Oy!

Back from a wonderful afternoon with friends. The temperature was in the low 90s and they wanted to smoke cigars with a port that one couple had been saving for 20 years.

In their backyard, we saw a road runner that had just caught a lizard. The bird was gorgeous.

(http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTY1WDUyMA==/$(KGrHqN,!p8F!,eIG4bVBQZK79IE9w~~60_1.JPG)

That is a terrible rendition of the song.  It needs to be sung by an older person.

Sammy Fain's demo recording nails it.

My memory (once again) fails me, Mike.  How did I "allow" you to hear Fain's verison of the song?

You sent me a copy of the Sammy Fain version which I also like better. It has verse and some alternate lyrics that are not heard in the film version which was sung by Suzy Braveau.

I cherish it as part of my Oscar song collection.
