Last night's rehearsal in THE VENUE was nice....but it is where they usually hold horse riding shows.....so there was still lots of pollen in the air.....hard to breathe.

But it will be nice.  Sharon and I did fine....and I think we are solidly in the middle of the pack.

Here is the C Bar C.

Good morning, all! Perhaps it's the rain, but I really wanted to lie in bed and listen to the rain for another hour. Instead, I'm up, and preparing for physical therapy.

Today is Sheldon Harnick's 90th birthday. What a wonderful man!

Speaking of birthdays, the vixter's looks like a major production to rival any Busby Berkley epic and I'm happy it went so well.

Yesterday, my super came in and used the last of the sheet rock he has to cover my bathroom ceiling over the tub. There's an area of about 3 square feet that is still uncovered and it will remain so till the supplies arrive, sometime between now and my death, when they will have to redo the bathroom to rent the apartment.  It took me about an hour last night to mop up the dust, wash the walls and clean the silt out of the tub and sink.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Great midweek vibes for everyone! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My almost 5 year old niece likes an Australian show on Disney Jr called Bananas in Pajamas.  It is interesting to me how many shows she watches that have the characters talking with different accents. I think it's a bit hard to understand but she says she understands what they are saying.
Anyhow on Bananas in pajamas there are two bananas (maybe twins) who look identical and wear the same pajamas.  Their names are B1 and B2 and they look the same. Well my niece tells me which one is which. And I ask her 'can you tell them apart?" and she says "of course".  I am shocked because I can't understand how this is possible.
So when I ask her how she can tell them apart she says, "because it says B1 and B2 on their pajamas".
Bahahahahaha.  So I look and on their collars in small it says B1 and B2. :)
Good morning, all.
Dead tired after a very long day yesterday, so fortunately I got to sleep in this morning.  This is a day off between hell mornings going to the high school.  We have cold and rain all day today, so I shall contentedly putter around inside, hopefully get a few necessary things done, then tonight I'm sitting in on a dress rehearsal of a local production of THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO by Alfred Uhry.
Wednesday morning greetings!  Last night I accompanied my friend Becky to a program at Miami University's Voice of America Learning Center because I didn't think she should attend alone.  It was the first Ohio screening of You're Looking at Me Like I Live Here and I Don't (http://yourelookingatme.com), a documentary about Alzheimer's.  It was very hard to watch and the panel discussion afterwards with the filmmaker and several gerontologists wasn't as enlightening as we'd hoped.
I would one of the many millions who contributed to that. I bought one of my textbooks for this semester at a brick and mortar store -- and yes, it was a Barnes & Noble.
I bought about 30 from used book websites, such as Half.com and from amazon used books.
Title: Re: THE LAST OF APRIL
Post by: ChasSmith on April 30, 2014, 08:42:53 AM
I'm actually shocked to think about how few new books, period, I buy these days.  I contribute to the problem, too, but more by being chiefly interested in older and out-of-print books, things in general that are rather harder to find, and which won't be found in any event in a Barnes and Noble store.
Can it be, though, that BK's books are just about the only NEW BOOKS I've bought over the past couple of years?  Well, just about.
Here's where Barnes and Noble is valuable to me:  I drop a TON of cash and plastic there at least twice a year on Blu-rays and DVDs ... led by Criterions during the sales, but I'm nearly always able to find more to add to the pile because ... it's a store, and being able to browse and discover things results in more sales.
DR CHAS SMITH that's one of my favorite plays!!!
I'm just getting to know it.  I sat in on an early rehearsal that whetted my appetite, so it'll be great to see tonight's -- especially since I can't attend their opening weekend because of my musical.  I'll certainly go back again later, though.
Hey, it even reawakened some interest in GONE WITH THE WIND, so as time permits, I and a couple of friends involved with the play (one of whom has never watched the entire film) will be sitting down to some documentaries and a Blu-ray showing one of these days.
While the chain bookstores have closed up shop, a locally owned bookstore, the two story THE BOOK BIN, which has long been in downtown Salem, recently opened a second store on the east side of town, where BORDER'S BOOKS used to be.
I am leafing through the latest Verizon Wireless circular from Sunday's paper, and am astonished at the proliferation of new wireless devices for the home.
You can remotely control your thermostat, your car, your scale, your lightbulbs, and your dead bolt from your smartphone.
You can monitor the sunlight, soil, and moisture in the dirt in your garden.
You can track your sleep, pulse, and blood oxygen levels.
Not to mention creativity tools.
Technology continues to amaze!      :)
I am very worried for my friends employed by Barnes & Noble and Imagem. I wish them all well. Perhaps this will be a good thing for the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization.
Barnes and Noble are going the way of Crown and all the others - they all robbed us of our beloved mom-and-pop stores.  They did so by slashing prices so low that half of what they sold were loss leaders.  But Barnes and Noble and Bookstar were something else - they became coffee houses where you could get coffee and sit and read books for free, which is exactly what everyone did.  It was, I'm afraid, both predictable and inevitable.  The mom-and-pops still exist online on the ABE.
The announcement of postponing TIME AND AGAIN at 54 Below seemed pretty darn classy, that they said in announcing it that Skip's score was near and dear to them.
http://www.broadwayworld.com/cabaret/article/54-SINGS-MERRILY-WE-ROLL-ALONG-Comes-to-54-Below-511-Replaces-TIME-AND-AGAIN-20140429#
"Unfortunately, we have to postpone indefinitely the presentation of Time and Again, a score near and dear to all of us at 54 Below," says Phil Geoffrey Bond, Director of Original Programming, 54 Below. "We couldn't find creative solutions to present the score in its best light and are postponing this until we do. We are thrilled that Merrily We Roll Along will be the latest score celebrated in our exciting '54 Sings' concert series."
That's too bad, Fred.
Border's helped.  When we lived in Michigan first Border's opened a major store and then B&N.  I preferred Borders & B&N was across the street from a small book store that quickly closed down.  I did my best to support the smaller stores only supporting the larger stores for items the little ones didn't carry.
One advantage of the larger chains is gift giving.  I don't like buying gifts that can't be returned.
Not an announcement, but a prediction.
The same predictors have said that both Best Buy and JC Penney would be gone by the end of 2013. They're both still here, but they are both decidedly hurting.
I was the first to predict that both Tower and Virgin would be gone within two years - I missed each by a year, but the prediction itself that they'd be gone was absolutely correct.  I don't think there' s much of a question - they are bleeding money losses.
Good morning, all! Perhaps it's the rain, but I really wanted to lie in bed and listen to the rain for another hour. Instead, I'm up, and preparing for physical therapy.
Today is Sheldon Harnick's 90th birthday. What a wonderful man!
Speaking of birthdays, the vixter's looks like a major production to rival any Busby Berkley epic and I'm happy it went so well.
Yesterday, my super came in and used the last of the sheet rock he has to cover my bathroom ceiling over the tub. There's an area of about 3 square feet that is still uncovered and it will remain so till the supplies arrive, sometime between now and my death, when they will have to redo the bathroom to rent the apartment.  It took me about an hour last night to mop up the dust, wash the walls and clean the silt out of the tub and sink.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Great midweek vibes for everyone! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ASK ELMORE DAY

What do you think of the new super?

The announcement of postponing TIME AND AGAIN at 54 Below seemed pretty darn classy, that they said in announcing it that Skip's score was near and dear to them.

http://www.broadwayworld.com/cabaret/article/54-SINGS-MERRILY-WE-ROLL-ALONG-Comes-to-54-Below-511-Replaces-TIME-AND-AGAIN-20140429#

"Unfortunately, we have to postpone indefinitely the presentation of Time and Again, a score near and dear to all of us at 54 Below," says Phil Geoffrey Bond, Director of Original Programming, 54 Below. "We couldn't find creative solutions to present the score in its best light and are postponing this until we do. We are thrilled that Merrily We Roll Along will be the latest score celebrated in our exciting '54 Sings' concert series."

"Postpone indefinitely?"  Oh no!

I almost forgot that they are filming an episode of TNT's THE LIBRARIANS here in Salem. They are just down the block. Our state capital building is standing in for the NYC library and the park across the street will be used as the outside of a Munich Germany museum.

I have never heard of this show, but I just looked it up and it stars Noah Wylie and Matt Frewer among names I don't recognize.

Looking forward to seeing "Rise: A Spiritual Journey of Resistance"  tonight. It's a central point of Tolerance Week in Sioux City.  It's a really cool yearly event mostly centered on remembering the Holocaust.   This is a local public radio interview with the founder Jerry Weiner and our Symphony conductor Ryan Haskins. The interview is worth listening to.  I'm anxious to attend

I went to IMDB and have to wonder how can you not know the names of others listed, including Bob Newhart & John Larroquette (others but these are two I expect you to know).  What about Jane Curtin?   I don't see Frewer who is on Wylie's  FALLING SKIES.

"The Librarian" was a series of three made-for-TV movies in the "Indiana Jones" vein.  I really enjoyed them.  Jane Curtain and Bob Newhart were in them and they were just a lot of fun.  A co-worker of mine was an extra in a recent episode of "Portlandia" and she was contacted about being a regular extra for the series!  She can't do it, but she felt pretty special that she was asked. :)

Jane, that's OK.   I just looked up the meaning of that phrase "postponed indefinitely" - and that's what it means, but not what Skip was told.

Thanks for the alert!  I guess Skip had better check since he's already been doing work on an alternative way of doing the show.

And on a really sad note...'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' actor Hoskins dies at 71 (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/entertainment/20140430/EU--Britain-Obit-Hoskins/).

:(

Sad to hear that he passed away. 71 isn't that old anymore

I had the opportunity to work with him twice.

Unfortunately I never got to see either project. One was a television commercial for British Telecom and the other was for a movie called Rainbow both in 1995. They were both filmed in Montreal. I got the tv commercial because I was in the film.

The movie as far as I know was never released in North America.

But found out later via IMDB that:

1) That Bob Hoskins was the director. My scene was with him so I didn't realize he was the directing. It was a busy scene with lots of extras.

2) The first live-action theatrical motion picture originated on digital high definition video for distribution and exhibition in 35mm film. Freddie Francis photographed the movie with the Sony HDC-500 digital high definition camera system. Following the successful completion of this ground-breaking 'experiment', Sony along with Panavision developed the next generation of this camera system, the HDW-F900 for George Lucas, which he utilized in the production of "Star Wars:Episode II-Attack Of The Clones".

It wasn't until I saw Baldacci's name in the titles that I realized I had read, and have one book to be read.  I wish I had noticed his name when the show first aired as I would have begun recording them sooner.

Yeah, fewer people actually use their keyboards to write anything lengthy anymore. I can't imagine doing a thesis or a play on an iPad and keyboard, though.

What an experience tonight.  It was incredibly powerful.  They asked at the beginning of the show that no one clap so that everyone could experience the full impact of the presentation  It was amazing.  I do have to say that the most powerful moment for me was after the show when Mr. Gans, a Holocaust survivor went up to Ryan Haskins, our symphony conductor and the real creator of this show and gave him a huge hug. That said it all to me

I also thought it was classy of our governor to attend but to do it quietly.  Unless you heard him acknowledged as being there in the beginning of the evening or unless you saw him sitting there, you'd never know he was there.  It was very respectful without making the evening a political event.  I like that

Just finished watching a bootleg of "The Drowsy Chaperone." Don't know how I've missed seeing this at some community theater. Really fun.

And on that note: Good night, all.

Tonight, old man, you did it!
You did it! You did it! You said that you would do it,
And indeed you did. I thought that you would rue it;
I doubted you'd do it. But now I must admit it
That succeed you did. You should get a medal
Or be even made a knight.

Hard to say, but I hope they do, too.  Just impossible to say right now, and I'm sure I'll have a lovely night of no sleep.  If I had some Ny-Quil here I'd just take it to help me sleep.  Maybe I'll go get some right now.
