Title: THE MOSTLY PRODUCTIVE FRIDAY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were mostly productive, and now it is time for you to post until the mostly productive cows come home.

Today will be an easy day.  If I get up early enough (and if I just want to), I'll go to work for a few hours to make up some time because of having to leave early to get to the theater.  If I don't want to, I'll stay home, watch TV and do some laundry before going to the theater tonight.

Tough choices, I know. ;)

Today is the day....yes today is the day....

Dancing With the Putnam County Stars.....I am hoping we are somewhere in the middle of the pack rather than at the bottom of the heap....but we shall see.

I have just learned that two of the judges are CLOSE friends with one of the competitors, so I see his star rising in the East like the Sun.

Time will tell.

TOD:

There was a West Side Story jazz LP that I liked very much, but I can't remember the name of the group.....

And there used to be Broadway music LP's that were on sale at the grocery store for 49 cents....each one had the music from two shows....usually in suites that were a lot like overtures....I particularly remember the one that featured MY FAIR LADY and THE KING AND I.

Good morning, all! I have a bit of work to accomplish this morning for Rob Berman's Trinity Church concerts, and then I will meet Bruce Pomahac for lunch before we see Inventing Mary Martin at the York Theatre.

I've got to put together this morning notes for the first of the three concerts, Jerome Kern's 1917 Princess Theatre show, Oh, Boy!. I'll give him notes on what happened in the world and the New York stage in 1917, a short thing on the Princess Theatre, how Ray Comstock, and Elizabeth Marbury became its producers, and a synopsis of the show and hw the songs fit into the plot.

I just got this new Sheldon Harnick 2-CD set assembled for his 90th birthday, and I love it!

VIBES to DR FJL on his upcoming tribunal.

Thanks, Jrand!

Two days from 10 am to 5 pm are scheduled, which it seems is the norm for scheduling.

I gather it's just before a judge, not a jury (so to Dan M, where it takes place likely doesn't matter for the result re Bronx vs. Manhattan, except for witnesses getting there) - and I assume it's a "public hearing" only the way any trial is open for people who want to see it, and since the transcript becomes public info, the way the entire investigation report did.  But except for rare cases, i assume no one REALLY shows up to watch who's not really involved or interested.

I also liked the jazz influenced covers of Broadway and films more than the Ferrante & Teicher/Ray Connif/101 Strings/Percy Faith type of albums. I found the latter types to be way over the top for my taste.

BUT sometimes you could find a rarity. A track of music cut from the show and the album being the only source for it. Like I once found "The Quests" a musical sequence cut from Camelot

But I stop the show as soon as i feel sleepy.

Good morning, all.

Got to sleep in a little bit, then I drove a station wagon load of JUNK to the dumpsters, an annual thing my town has been doing for the past several years.

Edit:  Trash and recycling are weird issues around here.  After years of rough starts, we finally have a good, easy to understand and manage, recycling program available to us.  But this town in particular has never provided a way to easily get rid of one's large trash items, not even a place where you could haul things and pay a small price per lb. to drop it off.  Also, none of the weekly trash/recycle pickup is handled by the city.  You choose one of the commercial companies to do it, and it does cost a shiny dime or two.  So when they started this annual "clean-up day" several years back, in which they'd provide dumpsters, etc., it became an instant success.

I'm theoretically "here" for the first of the three Trinity concerts, but I will have just been on the road all day the previous day (very quick trip to see family), so no guarantees I'll have it in me to get up and into the city for that one.  But I'm in for the second and third.

TOD:

I have all of those West Side Story albums on LP.  Actually, I'd better check on that "ballet" one -- I think I have it, but I suspect I haven't listened to it.  This will be rectified.

I love the Shelley Manne / Andre Previn albums based on shows.  Oddly, and unforgivably, the one I have NEVER come across on LP (which all my others are on) is Li'l Abner.  It's time to get off the dime and move the CD into my Amazon cart and begin enjoying it once and for all.

Like DR Mike, I far prefer jazz interpretations of show scores over the 101 Strings / Ray Conniff / etc. approach.  Those certainly have their place, and can be enjoyable at times, but for me, most of them were like unto "elevator music" that rarely captured the essence of what I love about show scores.

There are a huge number of West Side Story in jazz albums - more than for any other show, I think.  The Kenton is a classic, as is the Peterson, but I love Cal Tjader's version and several others.  The Robert Prince album is a must-have, a wonderful performance of the WSS dances, and his piece is also wonderful.  Not as fond of the Shelly Manne/Previn version - and Brubeck has a very good one, too.

I had to do a bit of ketching-up (or maybe, after reading this post, kvetching up).

To DR FJL:  Good luck in the public hearing, hope that the venue is friendly for your side.

Re: West Side Story versions

I like all of the aforementioned.  ALSO, love the so-called elevator music.  Ferrante & Teicher were great, etc.  It may not be a cup of tea to all.

Segue, from cup of tea.  One who is not mine is Seth MacFarlane.  I hear him sing and think of the "American Dad" opening, so I can't erase that memory.  His humor has stayed in the toilet all these years, and I find that such humor takes very little effort, cf. any 11 year-old boy child.

Kvetch #2:

Hated the (unfortunately) Bernstein conducted so-named operatic version.  The singers apart from that recording are usually among my favorites, but for me, the operatic singing style is too overpowering for the singing of most "pop" songs.  I tried to, and wanted to, like it.  After all it was LB, but if it doesn't jell, it isn't aspic, and this didn't jell for me (paraphrased from Martin Balsam's Det. Arbogast).

I also did not care much for the mid-1990s version, save for Little Richard's high-camp of "I Feel Pretty" and Aretha Franklin's "Somewhere".  For me, Aretha Franklin is right up there with Ella and the Divine Miss Sarah.  I know that the intentions were good, but for me, too uneven, as most of the other performers are not people I like to listen to.

But, who am I?  I'm not a music expert, nor a musicologist.  I like Ferrante & Teicher, Ray Conniff, Leroy Holmes and any number of lounge types, which is a put-down term I think.  I do tend toward orchestral music, so maybe I'm just a musical misfit.  If I should ever enter Lincoln Center again, the pillars may fall, who knows?

I am playing kvetch today it seems.

Going to see INTO THE WOODS tonight at 3D Theatricals, where I did PARADE last year. They should have hired me for the Mysterious Man of the Woods, so I could play the father of the guy I played 20 years ago. Then again, It's kinda nice at my age to be told that I look too young for a role.  :D

Thanks, DR Jane. I'll manage. It's just a difficult set of circumstances. My mother passed, then right after that, in the second week of rehearsals, the composer of this reading died unexpectedly, and the script is filled with talk about coffins and death. Just not what I need right now. It's over Monday night. I'll manage and then I'll forget about it for good.

Today will be an easy day.  If I get up early enough (and if I just want to), I'll go to work for a few hours to make up some time because of having to leave early to get to the theater.  If I don't want to, I'll stay home, watch TV and do some laundry before going to the theater tonight.

Tough choices, I know. ;)

I did not go to work today.

Dancing With the Putnam County Stars.....I am hoping we are somewhere in the middle of the pack rather than at the bottom of the heap....but we shall see.

I have just learned that two of the judges are CLOSE friends with one of the competitors, so I see his star rising in the East like the Sun.

I agree with you, Larry.  And since I didn't know all that much about intimate details of Mary Martin's life (I'm sure less than you know about her, of course, Larry), it held that extra fascination for me.

DR ryacko I'm sorry you aren't enjoying the reading.

I didn't realize the subject on top of everything else.

So, could you figure out why the critics were largely so negative about the production? What's not to like about the songs? Or the fact that they're sung by the likes of Emily Skinner and Jason Graae?

I think the major dailies have more of an impact on other reviews than we like to think.

But the more positive notices seem to have come from the critics on theater-oriented internet sites who seem to have a predilection to love the subject going in  [Matthew Murray being an expected exception], which I think adds up to:  if the subject as described appeals to you or intrigues you, they deliver it very well and deliver it with much entertainment and insight.  But if it doesn't sound intriguing to a potential audience member to see a revue about the life of Mary Martin, this may not be the show for that person.

Well, we were pretty determined to win, but didn't know about the cash until we got there.  John, the guy in one of the photos was our main competition, he said he'd been studying Sioux City History for a long time and was confident about winning.  He didn't want to get wet though, so he kept taking the skywalk, which made it harder to find all the buildings. Speaking of ROSEMARY'S BABY - ran across this YouTube report on the TV remake

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55MHn2StJG4

I am confused by some of the articles I have read about the miniseries.  All of them go out of their way to say that this is based on the novel, and not on the film.  I don't remember very many diffferences between the two; at least, not enough to make such a distinction.

Had our stumble-through - cast was great, MD had real issues today and I had to be very strong to get them fixed - way too many crazy mistakes throughout - I can deal with one or two, but when opening vamps change, when songs are started in wrong keys, when transitions aren't what they're supposed to be, then the singers are left hung out to dry and I just won't allow it.  Hopefully there will be much practicing between now and sound check.  But what songs and what singers.  I was so whacked out about the piano stuff that I wasn't really concentrating enough on Sami and my duet (she was having trouble concentrating, too because we didn't know if we were going to be led into some wacky land) - Actually I remembered everything but the first line of one couplet.  After we were done, I reviewed all the problem sections and hopefully the problems were rectified in ways that he will understand for the show.

Oh, well.  It's not the first time that something like that has happened.  And when I'd had some stuff stolen a few years ago from my garage, there were a couple of CDs that I bought more than once...I now have two copies of Donna Murphy's The King and I, and three copies each of Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Birdcage AND Das Barbecü. ::)

;)

But what languages are they?

I don't mean to say it didn't go well - it was fine for the singers - they were great and the songs are all stellar - it was just the MD problems that were problems and hopefully we've now solved them.  Luckily, whenever I'm told something was right when I know it wasn't, the singer has a recording and we play it and guess what - it wasn't right - then we adjust.  If I hear anything untoward at the sound check we'll still have time to adjust it.  As much as I love our MD, this will, I think, be his last time with us and I think he'll be thrilled with that news.

Tacoma Little Theatre has announced their 96th season.  They are doing SCROOGE, THE MUSICAL.  I so wanted another chance to play Scrooge, but it isn't going to happen now.
