Good morning, all! This morning, I have the same bus rides as yesterday to see a podiatrist at my HMO's 22nd Street office. Following that, I will bus up Sixth Avenue to Toyland and work there until noon. Then, I will head to City Center and observe the dress rehearsal for IRMA LA DOUCE. When I get home after that, I will fall over.  I will be so happy when this week ends.

Another night of poor sleep and weird dreams: one was about a recording session with the late John McGlinn, who was much heavier in the dream than I ever remember his being in reality, although his weight fluctuated like mad.  In the dream, we had the reconciliation we never had; once McGlinn's paranoia set in, no one was forgiven, and after the events of 2002, neither of us had any inclination to be colleagues ever again. Still, I was an heir in his will. Go figure. Perhaps his ghost visited last night.

I also had a dream about my bothers at a young age, and my mothwr was in it as well.

Good morning, all.

Stayed in bed late even though I've been awake.  Had the craziest dream yet involving my long-dead grandmother (at the age bracket she would have been in during, say, the 1970s), her 1960 white Ford Falcon, something at the Chinese Theatre, some horrible parking garage situation that morphed into a horrible hotel or motel situation, and then some other people and some weird abstraction involving a song from HAIRSPRAY.  I'm glad to be up and at 'em.

Coffee!

So, what's up for me today?

I'd prefer to be working outdoors cleaning things up, but today I have to tackle my LI'L "office" corner, sorting, filing, throwing things away.  It gets good once I've thrown myself into it (I almost said thrown myself away, too), but it takes a while to get started.

That, and listening to IRMA LA DOUCE ... which I'm seeing tomorrow night at Encores!  It kind of snuck up on me and I wish I knew the score a lot better.  But I'm quite sure the troops will be remarkable and I'll be dazzled.  Or something like that.

There was some consternation among the populace because the name of Isaiah was spelled incorrectly on the sign carried by the Save a Soul Mission Band.

A prominent church in the Twin Cities caused consternation recently as well, by misspelling the word "resurrection" in their splashy Easter newspaper advertisement.

Re the notes:   Interesting about the upright pianos.  Is that what will be used instead of keyboard and amp?  I'm dying to know what the music is going to consist of and sound like, but I'm sure that's something BK won't be talking about yet.

Would love to have seen the designer run-through!  As rough as it may have been, it would have been totally fascinating.

Edit:  Had something else to say on that subject.  What was it?
Title: Re: TAKEN ABACK
Post by: ChasSmith on May 06, 2014, 07:50:46 AM
Oh, I know what it was.  That reminded me, and I hadn't thought about this in years, but in the first show I was involved in at the little regional theater where I'm most active, I played A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum on an old spinet piano (the ubiquitous Baldwin Acrosonic) behind the set, assisted by a friend who filled in, like the proverbial octopus, on a small consumer-grade keyboard and an array of percussion instruments.  Talk about amateur hour!  But the show was good, and we managed to pull it off musically.  More or less.  I wonder if the VHS copy of that still plays.  Note to self...

Wondering if any DRs picked up this set of B budget film noirs from Warner Archives. It is a dandy bunch of enjoyable films put out by Allied Artists in the 1950s. I have been enjoying them quite alot!

My trip to Portland on Saturday to see the 1954 version of Godzilla was splendid.

I went up a bit early and prowled around town for awhile, visiting some antique/retro shops and then haveing lunch at the Lauralwood Pub and Grill where I had a tasty mound of buscuits and gravy (although there was far too much bisucuit, and not enough gravy for it all). I was unable to interest any of my buddies to go along..well, my friend Ron wanted to, but he had to work.

Since childhood I have seen Godzilla at least three dozen times, but I always enjoy it. This was the original Japanese release...no Raymond Burr insert shots (although I love that version as well). As I grow older I tend to appreciate this film more and more, noticing how it is not just about a big monster smashing Tokyo, but how people react to a threat whether it keeping secrets, fighting each other, political tugs of war, etc. It is still a relevant film and has some amazing performances.

Thankfully, the audience was respectfull of the film. Last time Godzilla played in Portland, many in the audience thought they were supposed to hoot and holler and make fun of it. However, this first movie is quite a serious piece. But some audience members were not able to put the film in context and instead derided the acting style and old fashioned (non CGI) special effects.

I was pleased that this was no repeated.

And I was surprised at the size of the audience. This was at the old Hollywood Theatre and the place was packed! This despite it was the 3rd of 4 days the film was being shown there. I was glad I arrived early, otherwise I'd have ended up with a lousy seat.

I'm confused by something in Filichia's write-up on IRMA LA DOUCE:

No need for me to translate "grisbi" once you hear the song title "Le Grisbi Is the Root of the Evil in Man."  The way the singers end that song on the original cast album – taking the word "can" and adding no fewer than thirteen scoopy "ans" on the end -- is pretty much the way the Four Plaids would have handled it.

I don't THINK I'm hearing them do anything but hold the final chord out, as written, while the band bangs out the thirteen chords under them.  What am I missing here?

So, what's up for me today?

....

That, and listening to IRMA LA DOUCE ... which I'm seeing tomorrow night at Encores!  It kind of snuck up on me and I wish I knew the score a lot better.  But I'm quite sure the troops will be remarkable and I'll be dazzled.  Or something like that.

ChasSmith, just pretend that you're at the world premiere opening night and no one in the world has ever heard the score.  You wouldn't necessarily wish that you "knew the score a lot better" in that situation, would you?

;)

I'm confused by something in Filichia's write-up on IRMA LA DOUCE:

No need for me to translate "grisbi" once you hear the song title "Le Grisbi Is the Root of the Evil in Man."  The way the singers end that song on the original cast album – taking the word "can" and adding no fewer than thirteen scoopy "ans" on the end -- is pretty much the way the Four Plaids would have handled it.

I don't THINK I'm hearing them do anything but hold the final chord out, as written, while the band bangs out the thirteen chords under them.  What am I missing here?

Perhaps he's relying on faulty memory.

Jane, I forgot to say that I enjoyed the season finale of RESURRECTION.  There was a great deal of suspense, some interesting twists, and a shock in the final 30 seconds that I didn't see coming.  I look forward to next season.

Thanks.  I have to make sure our DVR is set to record all episodes, not just first run.

Tuesday afternoon greetings!  I went to vote this morning on my way to lunch with the grantwriters.  We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the group and I was one of 4 original members in attendance.  We all received nice gifts, which were totally unexpected.

It is nice to be recognized when you deserve it.  :)

DR Jennifer I'm sorry you can't fix your laminator.

There is a small chance i can unscrew the bottom and pull out the stuck piece. I just need someone stronger who can use the screwdriver and maybe get it open.  Oh well it only cost maybe $20 or $30 and i have used it for many many years a lot.

I made a Mexican bean salad today to serve to our company tomorrow.  I remember telling Keith when we were at the market that I needed a red onion and walking in that direction.  I wonder what distracted me that I never picked it up.  I will have to get one tomorrow morning and add it.

Just as I was about to add corn to the salad I realized one of our guests, who is now on a gluten free diet, might not eat corn.

I put half the salad dressing in the bean & pepper mix and a little bit in the corn which is in a separate bowl.  The rest of the dressing is waiting until I decide how to mix all of this.  ;D

DR Jennifer  ALLEGIANT didn't take long to come in.  I actually wish I had another week as I am slowly reading one book which will be followed by a 700+book.  At least I know once I get to Allegiant it will be a quick read, at least the first two were.

They will be in Los Angeles later this year, BK, and I suggested they interview you, too.

Um, Author Solutions is my publisher, Author House - I have done many interviews with them, both video and print - they always come to me because I'm their most published author.

A few years ago, my sister's boyfriend sold an original Bob Dylan poster from 1966 for $3,000.  A few years before that, the guy bought a poster of the Buddy Holly concert that was supposed to have happened but didn't because Buddy died.  The guy paid $10,000 for it!  There are people like that out there.  More power to 'em, but it ain't me.

So, I was just watching Orson Welles' last interview - he died a couple of hours after doing it - on the Merv Griffin show in the mid-80s.  It was posted on You Tube and the company that posted it now owns the rights to all the Griffin shows from beginning to end.  So, I went to their website and wrote them an e-mail, asking if it were possible to get my segment of the show that I did in 71 or 72.  A long shot, but I didn't think it would hurt to ask.
